We were in Asbury Park walking around and the vibe of the store caught my eye so I popped in. Tara instantly knew I was her target audience and I respect her for that. The one on one attention was slightly overwhelming and may not be everyone's style of sale, but it's understandable why she runs her business the way she does. She had me try on a Bésame lipstick which I was instantly sold on because I'm familiar with the brand and had been looking for a new red shade. Also picked up a gorgeous recycled leather crossbody that caught my eye. I fell in love with a playsuit in a tattoo print which was not available in the displayed fabric in my size, but Tara did a great job of showing me lots of options and fits to decipher my style. If you do order something, be patient because tariffs have been a challenge but my item was worth the wait. It fits pretty perfectly and is so gorgeous. I have bought so many things here from dresses, to petticoats, to shoes, to makeup, to hair accessories, to sun glasses - all in vintage 1950s style. This store does NOT SELL FAST FASHION. So if you are looking for a bargain, this is not the place. All the dresses are designed by the owner & made in small batches, in limited run. Once a dress sells out it seems to be gone forever. I went to Asbury Park today to pick up a dress & the store was closed. It looks like it either moved or was under construction. Her IG shows a store in New Orleans so maybe they moved everything there. I hope not because I love this place. There's nothing else like it that I know of nearby, including Manhattan. read more

I have always admired their style, and until this year, I never noticed menswear. But this year, they feature some nice menswear, and I was excited to check them out. Let's just say I was more excited to be there than they were to see me. The ladies who worked there pretty much ignored me. Tried as I might, I was not able to get them to pay me any attention or answer my questions about sizing. But a gentleman came to my rescue. The changing rooms were full, so he said it was OK to try the shirt on and put on the swim trunk over my shorts. It was going well until he was called away while helping me. Then the owner decided to pay attention to me, and she did not approve. She started scolding me about not trying the clothes in a changing room. When I tried to explain, she raised her voice even higher, then mumbled something under her breath. Did I walk into a feud? Am I, not the type of customer they want in there? I can only say that they did not talk to the other customers like they talked to me. The salesmen was so disappointing. We were in earlier and spent 280. on somewhat overpriced cloths but it was for my grandkids. My wife and I came back later to see if a dress that did not fit my granddaughter, would fit my wife. The salesman would not let her try it on, insisting, my wife was the same size as my granddaughter and saying, " I am not going to waste your or my time, taking the dress off the wall and have her try it on." I don't understand why people are saying that the owner of this store Tara is shady or not friendly. She is very thorough and a great person. Although I live in the Northeast, I recently met her in the New Orleans store and she was doing three things at once: helping customers, training a new associate and working the register. She is a truly amazing woman. Maybe those who are critical of her do not understand the kind of powerhouse (Jersey) girl you need to be to create and run your own company. You are not going to get a wilting violet so do not expect one! The clothing is excellent and I found the customer service to be very good, as well. It is a super fun store with quality garments that will last for a very long time. Prorate the cost of the garment over ten years and you will see that it is a bargain. Little does this woman know my mother has a condition where she could seize. To have a sale associate so unempathteic working for your business is disgraceful. Everyone was so interested in potential outfits that might look good on me. That's not "pushy" if its genuine. We all had fun dressing me up, laughing and whooping it up. They really cared about all the shoppers in the store and wanted us to feel deserving of getting some glamour in our style no matter what our weight, shape or age. Very genuine and had great ideas. Brilliant original designs, quiet simply the Bomb!

I am so happy to find a store that sells vintage clothing because the problem with buying online is you don't know if the sizing is just right. They oftentimes run smaller than you think or larger. So, it was so a pleasure to find this little gem. The store associate was super friendly. He told me to take my time trying on whatever I wanted and he was knowledgeable about the clothing. Really took his time to take care of me. Only downfall was it was a bit warm that day so after trying on a few outfits, I was already sweating. Also, the prices are a bit higher than what you pay for online but - again - you get to try it in person so that is a huge perk! I definitely intend to return the next time I have some nice extra cash lying about because this place is awesome! read more

I stopped in to browse around and he stopped chit chatting with another employee to eye me up and down and follow me as if I were about to steal something. I picked up a dress that I was considering trying on and he flew over to take it from my hands to eye me my body up and down as he condescending said, "This is a UK 6". Sorry I'm not sophisticated enough for your boardwalk store, as if I couldn't possibly understand European sizing. Not at all surprised at all the negative reviews. The owner Tara Elliott has no people skills and is RUDE. Back in 2019, the Ocean Grove fire took out some stores along the Asbury Park boardwalk. Bettie's was on the other end and was unaffected by the fire. Every other store around Bettie's was open. There was a sign on Bettie's store that it opened at 10. My party and I checked out of our hotel and were supposed to head back home, but made a point to hang out on the boardwalk after breakfast so we could visit the store. I'd never been there before but the window displays were interesting. Around 10:15 I notice the lights are on and see 3 people inside the store. So my friend and I go to open the door and they rush to the door to yell at us that the store is closed. When I said "But the sign says it's open at 10 am..." the RUDE owner Tara snaps at us "EXCUSE ME MY OTHER STORE JUST BURNED DOWN IN THE FIRE AND WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO DEAL WITH YOU" and slammed the door in our face. And as it turns out, this user messaged other people who posted negative reviews for the store as well with the same message. I think the owner should have opened this boutique downtown. It's not unusual for a boutique/luxury experience to have an uppity atmosphere and I can handle that. I'm just curious if this is the standard they want to uphold, judging the shopper by their appearance, why they chose to open on a scrappy little boardwalk? I love this place! My mothers and I came to this place looking for a dress for my mom. My mother has come here before and she found an amazing dress which fit her perfectly. We went in and it had just rained so we stood outside for a couple minutes just to dry off which was completely understandable. We went inside and we look around. Please do keep in mind these are very high quality and beautiful products which the owners want to keep as hygienic as possible so only touch them when needed. Once we looked around my mother got fitted and when she came out we know that dress. That was the only dress she had to try on. It looked great on her body type and she loved it. We then bought shoes and lipstick( which is amazing it doesn't come off when you eat)! Anyway I was looking for shoes and I have a very wide foot I'm a size 11. I tried on at least 15 pairs and the owner/manger was so helpfull and lovely. Overall I had a great time and I believe we spent over an hour in there just being girls and talking! Overall we ended up with 4 pairs of shoes and 1 dress and lipstick. I recommend this place to woman of all sizes. The owner puts a lot of work into her designs and she is very proud of them. I will be coming back her to get a dress for me in the near future. The. owner is a sweetheart with a big personality. If you are not willing to try on the clothes this is not the place for you. I understand that covid-19 has turned majority of the world into extreme germaphobes, but this place should not be open if you don't want customers looking around. I see the stuff she hand makes is very unique, but if I can't browse through racks I will not buy. First off we asked to come in and we had to make an appointment which the store is big enough to have a few customers at a time. Fine. We'll make an appointment, but then they give us hand sanitizer and gloves to wear. Okay that's fine. I understand we are in the phases of trying to get back to normal. I'm okay with hand sanitizer and gloves. But then we were NOT allowed to touch anything! Which doesn't make any sense at all because she allowed people to try on clothes. And I'm pretty sure my sisters bare tits touched her over priced bathing suits. So you want me to spend $240.00 on a dress but I can't browse through your racks with hand sanitizer and gloves on?!?! Absolutely no sense at all. We are in a global crisis, I've been on unemployment for months and u want me to not touch a thing in the store and spend that kind of money. Close shop. And to top it off I asked to try on shoes the ice cream flats and you bring me two right feet. $90.00 shoes and don't think I didn't see they were falling apart. With all the admiration I can muster for a female run business, especially one who caters to a niche clientele with a specific aesthetic, I have to say that, tonight I went into this store for the last time. It's a shame because the store offers great pieces in an incredible size range. But the obstacles have been ingrained over time. Sadly, one of the first times I went in, the owner introduced herself and then proceeded to berate the man there with her from the minute I walked in till the minute I left and that was soon after they first opened. Over the years since then, I've still brought friends who have bought there. The new location is lovely and I said so tonight but to come in yet again to be hounded incessantly by a sales person after asking her name and telling her several times that we did not need help was beyond frustrating. The lack of price tags, (they can easily be put in a seam or through an existing tag) inspires a lack of trust. When they tell me the prices and they sometimes double what I've seen online, that distrust is confirmed. I wear vintage clothes a LOT! They are my style. Tonight I had on pedal pushers and was wearing vintage glasses and the condescending manner of the staff turns me off so much. This is an amazing store with a wonderful dedicated owner. Its a full service boutique which typically means that the employees will get sizes for you and help you get the correct sizes, similar to all high end stores like Gucci. The owner is 100% honest and does not try to push unflattering things on customers just for a sale, she actually REALLY cares about her customers. Theres a huge bonus knowing she keeps her merchandise in pristine condition by being full service. The custom designs are truly custom that a lot of time and effort goes into creating. I have had amazing experiences there in the last month. Knowing I am always getting clothes that have not been destroyed by sweaty oily people recklessly trying on things. I promise if you get to talking with the owner you will see her love for making people happy. Its a fabulous experience just very personalized. This dress shop on the boardwalk in Asbury Park is a gem. The quality and uniqueness is unlike anything you can find anywhere. You can go to any Department store and get something that's mediocre and that someone else will be wearing. Also, the clothes are made in the USA. Tara, the owner and designer of many of the gorgeous dresses is so welcoming and really wants to help you find the perfect dress or whatever else you may be looking for. Their swimsuits are freaking adorable!! No matter what your size is, you will look amazing. Had the complete opposite experience of other reviewers when I came to the store, and have made it a mandatory part of my annual trek down to AP. If you regularly like to "shop" at department stores where you are wholly on your own and have to seek out an employee, this is not the place for you. The owner, Tara, is always super busy and still makes time to talk to EVERY ONE of her customers and tell them they are beautiful. She carries sizes and shapes for EVERY body size and type from petit to plus size, and will style ANYONE (male or female, big or small, young or old, etc.)... and when I say plus sized, I don't mean up to size 16 plus sized! She has got you girls covered up to size 20-something! All of these dresses are hand-picked out by the owner and some she even designed herself, so she is understandably protective if she sees people clawing through racks like they are shopping the clearance aisle at target. And I think her intent is to have customers feel like shopping there is like a concierge experience rather than just "shopping". She has beauty products that require training to apply correctly (similarly to makeup artists), dresses than range in size and fit (because of different sizing standards from where she hand picks the dresses from), and she is trying to bring some vintage culture and style to a modern era where people often buy ill-fitting clothes in an environment that feels more like a self-depricating scavenger hunt through discount racks than an opportunity to find something to make one feel beautiful. Her employees help customers find sizing based on their actual size (not the numerical size) and they try to style customers and help people of all sizes feel stunning. I don't think it's really anyone's business how long it takes a business owner to train their employees, especially since she is the one paying them and they willingly work there. If it takes a year to train them the way she likes, then that's kind of her own damn business. I never once felt pushed to try on or buy anything I didn't love (though to be fair, I want to buy like 99% of the store), and I walk away every time feeling more confident and beautiful than I did walking in. I know this is a raving review, but as someone who has had serious body issues my entire life and someone who finds female-owned small businesses very flippin refreshing, I have got to stand up for this place. I've never left a one star review before, but my experience was just so disappointing and I'll never step in this store again. First time I went in was two weeks ago when I was in town for work. The owner was chatty and I told her I looked forward to returning in a couple weeks while on vacation with my boyfriend, with more time to look and shop - I told him about the cute store and we put it on our list. We returned on beach vacation, and my boyfriend immediately saw a Frieda Kahlo dress perfect for his niece who is obsessed with all things Kahlo and who wears retro clothes, and he took a pic to text her, asking if she would wear it. The owner freaked out and yelled at us there was no cell phone pictures allowed, then told her employee to yell at us too. Talk about embarrassing and unwelcoming, do you now want to stay and buy $200 dresses? We looked startled I guess, so she continues with an explanation - says only she knows how to photograph her clothes so they look nice, and to find it and share on her Instagram because she doesn't like how her clothes look when other people photograph them. If this is your policy, for whatever reason, you should have a sign up saying no cell phone pics to save clients the admonishment - how were we supposed to know? (Btw the kicker? We are in fashion & beauty journalism and interior design and know how to take a photo, but way to insult us on top of it.) My boyfriend wanted to leave then, and we got to hear the owner saying nasty things about us as we stepped out. She didn't remember me from a couple weeks ago apparently, and I don't know if us wearing swimsuits (I had a coverup on) made her judge us differently than when I had walked in with a work dress on two weeks before. But I'm not going in there again, and I don't think the boardwalk is the right place for their business, it's more a fittings-by-appointment-only type of place. Myself and my two best friends went to shop there last night. It was by appointment only, which at first was unnerving, but once our appointment time rolled around I can totally see why an appointment was a benefit. We got amazing service. The owner and the rest of the staff were so nice and fun! I felt safe in their store during this crazy pandemic. We had to wear gloves and masks. We were given hand sanitizer at the door. Wanted to go into the store to look around while at Asbury Park and the door was blocked off by a rope. This was not a problem and I planned on waiting my turn to go inside. I mentioned to the people I was with that it was taking an awfully long time to get to go inside. The owner apparently heard this, as she spoke loudly to me from across the store that she was one person trying to run the store and that if I didn't want to wait then I could just leave. I also asked that if I could come in and look around and she said, "We're not that kind of store." As a store who wants business, people have to look around to see your products. This made no sense to me. The owner was extremely rude and snippy with myself and my party and I find this to be completely unacceptable. She's honest, hardworking, and the entire staff wants Bettie's Bombshell's to be an immersive experience. I have been coming to Asbury for years now & have frequently stopped in this store the past 4 years as they do have the cutest clothing-but it is a shame in the years I have been here have only purchased one or 2 items. Although there are pieces I would love to try on, the shopping experience is less than pleasant. You can not roam freely without the constant voice of a sales associate or the owner behind your back. Today topped it. I walked in with my friend to their now bigger location. The minute I walked in the sales associate advised me of where the clothing came from. Thank you. I walk in and begin to browse. I touch a bathing suit and immediately am told the price & sizing. Thank you. On to a dress, same thing. I walk to the shoes, same thing. My friend looks at a dress and again is told the same. Finally we had to say "When we need your help and are definitely interested in an item we will ask." The owner advised us that this is a boutique and a full service store. Great. I have been to many boutiques & never have anyone breathing down my neck. My friend got married in the area years before and I remember coming to this store and regretting not buying. The moment I walked in, women from the back were spewing why everything is so special and is the "only" store that carries such merchandise (hello, Amazon?). Nothing had a price tag on it and you had to ask (I went to school for fashion Merchandising so let me tell you this is NOT a good practice to follow if you actually want to sell something). When I told them what I was doing they got an attitude, so I walked out. This all took place in 5 minutes. I even circled to find a parking space to specially go into this store. If I could give this place less than a star I would due to such poor customer service. Here was my experience... Came from out of town to enjoy the beach and stop by a couple of small business help support after a pandemic. My girlfriend wanted to go to a clothing store that had some unique pieces plus she had shop their before in the past, so I was more then willing to look through a store that compliments her style. We attempted to go in once but they nicely stated that they where at capacity. We return an hour later and fortunately where able to look around. Any item my girlfriend looked at the lady helping had a comment to make so just note someone will follow you throughout the store. She made a comment to my girlfriend saying she liked her belt that she was wearing and recognized it. We felt rude to correct her and let her know it was not purchased in her "one of a kind designed store" so my girlfriend replied with a smile and said thank you. My girlfriend then picked out a pair of sun glasses and three shirts asked to try on two of the three and was rudely dismissed with a response of "they aren't going to fit you!" My girlfriend asked "well can I please just try them on" for the lady working their responded with "they are not going to fit I'm a trained professional!" I couldn't believe the audacity that this woman totally sized up my girlfriend without measurements calling herself a professional who knows her shit. The tasteless comment was revolting leaving us with no other choice but to walk out and take our money else where. I've never experienced such poor customer services. I come from a background in retail and I'm still shocked. This place may have cute items but they need to be honest about all of their items being "self designed" or "self made" in which you can find online from other clothing stores. I will be telling multiple friends and family members who travel the extra mile for small business. The literal most annoying store I've ever been into in my entire life. Great if you're someone who needs so much help that you are being literally suffocated by it, but there is no leisurely shopping to be had here. The owner passive aggressively explained how I'm going to need her help while shopping and how I need to show her what I try on after, and that her employees "require two months of training to understand the sizing in this store." Why? Why would you want your business, that's literally located on a beach boardwalk, to be so unshoppable for consumers? In addition to being really inefficient and wasting two months training? I was so uncomfortable and anxious in this store that I left, but then realized I forgot my phone 10 seconds later and walked in to hear the owner already talking crap about me lmao. This was my first time in the store and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed myself there. Tara the owner was very accommodating and encouraged me to try on what I wanted, but there was no pressure the buy. I've been looking for a bathing suit to wear on vacation, and Tara put me in a black one piece, some sunglasses, and a head scarf. For the first time I felt like a bombshell! Going to this store is an experience and I recommend everyone check it out at least once. It's such a fun store and I had a blast. read more

I was looking at clothes with my sister to potentially buy until the owner told one of the clerks to "watch them" as she stepped out of the store. I will definitely not be giving my business to a company that makes me feel like a second class citizen. I'd give no stars if I could. read more
