Betty Janes used to have the very best carmel apples. I bought 10 for my husband to share at work for his birthday. He brought 3 home. These were terrible. They were small, about half the size that they used to be AND they were mealy and mushy. We split one and threw the last two away they were that bad. I will happily pay $5 for a good Carmel apple but these aren't even worth $1. read more

What a disappointment. Growing up in Dubuque I used to love Betty Jane Candies. What a disappointment it has become. A place that was once magical now feels like an assembly line in a factory. The variety of candies has been diminished. Where there used to be cases filled with chocolates there are now only a few candies on plates. The clean, professional smocks are gone replaced by a hodge podge of casual clothing. Even the signature gift wrap is gone. All of the things that made Betty Jane stand out as a confectioner are gone. Now one might as well just buy prepackaged Gremlins at Hy-Vee. read more

This place was very similar inside to Fannie Mae. The boxes with the elastic gold cord tied in a bow wrapped around the corner of the box was tooooo similar. Over priced chocolate, as per usual in these types of stores. Odd that their gummi bears are from Albanese candy located in Merriville, Indiana. I'm specifically reviewing the Asbury store location. I was visiting from out of town and wanted to stop in for some delightful caramel apples and purchase numerous boxes of gremlins to take back with me to Cali. Prior to trekking out to Asbury, I checked Google for their store hours and called to verify the store hours. The phone message at this location stated that their hours were until 9 pm and that the associates were not available to speak with me because they were helping customers. I arrived at the Asbury store at 7:15 pm only to find it closed. The employees were still in the store, so I knocked on the door to ask some questions. The employees were the rudest people I've met; they completely ignored me. I had to walk around the entire front of the store to find the store hours posting (which was hidden behind a large shrubbery) and saw that the Asbury store closed at 7 pm. Maybe this is a small town thing that everyone knows by word of mouth, but being an OOT (out-of-towner), it would have be helpful to have the correct hours relayed via the phone and the web. Definitely not making an out-of-the-way stop to Betty Janes in the future. read more

I had visited the store on a trip to Dubuque and got the gremlins, as well their toffee and caramel corn and it was amazing. I actually live in Denver, but order Easter and special occasion candy from Betty Janes delivered to me in Denver. Recently I also tried their hot fudge and caramel sauce for ice cream and it was a huge hit at my house. The owner is always super friendly and always checks in to make sure I've received my order and that I've enjoyed it. Definitely would recommend as a must stop to anyone in Dubuque or passing through. read more

This place is cute. If you are familiar with See's candies well it's just like it except that Betty Jane makes homemade ice cream which i haven't tried. They have a wide variety of chocolates but the chocolate that sold me is the Willie Boys. Salted Peanuts with carmel, covered by white chocolate and a drizzle of caramel on top. The Dodge Street Betty Janes location should be closed. What a disgrace to the candy store I grew up with fond memories of as a lifelong Dubuquer. I stopped in to get my son a piece of chocolate at the end of a fun day we spent together. Ever since the Kennedy Mall location closed we have not indulged in the delicacies we have come to love/expect from Betty Janes because the new location is not convenient to us. However, my 6-year-old excitedly asked if we could pick up some candy, and I was happy to oblige. Between the three teenagers working behind the counter, it still took them 10 minutes to ring up 3 foiled pieces of chocolate and 1/4 lb. of marzipan. Important to note: we were the only patrons there with the exception of an older gentleman looking around. This was; by no exaggeration, the worst customer service I've ever experienced at a Dubuque business. My primary complaint, aside from the lack of customer service and the store looking as though it was just moved into today from it's drab and sterile atmosphere, was the marzipan. I knew instantly it looked different in the case, but not once did I think it would literally repulse me. If you are accustomed to Betty Jane's original marzipan, disappointed won't even cover how you'll feel once you bite into the cheap, waxy, candy-like substance they are trying to pawn off as marzipan. I took one bite of it and threw the rest of the bag away. The cost for Betty Janes' marzipan is $24.00/lb., which I never minded occasionally splurging on because of it's superior quality. Whatever it is they've labeled as marzipan now I wouldn't have paid $1.00 for. So disappointed. Feel swindled out of the little money I did spend there today. I bought a box of Gremlins from the store and unfortunately they changed how they are boxed so you can't see what they look like. I took them on the plane in cargo and opened them when we got to our destination. I was really annoyed after opening these in front of friends, after bragging about them, to find they had a grayish color on thechocolate. I took a photo and when got home went to the store by Target, was told to call Drew and he never responded even when I called both stores a couple of times. I finally went into the Asbury store and talked with the manager. She said it was because I put them in the cargo area. I almost laughed as I have taken Gremlins before on a plane and never had any issues. After discussing this with her, she finally asked if I wanted a new box. I said if I could see them first. This happened awhile back, but a friend just told me she took Gremlins in the past month and they looked the same way. read more

OMG their Gremlins are the best caramel & pecan chocolate covered candy I've had in all my 60 years. I wish I found them sooner. I've paid way too much for candies that are half the quality of Betty Jane's. Ive eaten a version of gremlins (aka turtles or caramel pecan patties) from all over the US, FRG & UK. These are so soft and fresh. The caramel is really creamy, doesn't stick to your teeth and the pecans are whole or in nice chunks & throughout the patty so you don't get just caramel with some bites. This store holds a special place in my heart as it was my Grandmas favorite place...she would send us to Betty Jane's once a week to buy her a pound of dark caramel chocolates. She was such a regular that they knew her by name, knew what she wanted and would have it ready in a few mins! I will always love Betty Jane's for this reason. They have amazing customer service, a down-home feel when you walk in the door and the best chocolate candies around. I have been coming to Betty Janes for a while now, and now I will be done with them. First off, the manager was very unprofessional. I asked one of the other clerks what her name was and they told me it was Mandy. Mandy was being very irritable with me. I would ask a simple question like "where are the gremlins at?" and she replied, "Well, there's a big sign over there on the wall that says gremlins on it, I would check over there", in a very rude, and sarcastic tone. I went to check out and there were no other customers in the store at the time. I was waiting to be checked out for about five minutes. I went over and asked if someone could check me out, and she told me just to wait a little bit. Then she proceeded to talk to someone else that worked there, and she was making fun of another customer that had come in earlier that day, which astonished me to see how a manager could be that rude and unprofessional. I would also like to say that they are very unorganized. Like another reviewer said, Betty Janes said that they would be open until 9 but were closed closer to 7. I would say that the manager has some work to do to fix things up but from my experiences with her, she wont get a single thing done, and will only do negative things for the company. I do feel the need to say that not all my experiences were bad. Before, I would go in and I would get great help from the other employees. If you are going to go in, I would recommend finding Aubrey, Cameron, Holly, or Allyson, and stay clear of Mandy. read more

I have had chocolate all over the world and Betty Jane is now my second favorite chocolate in the USA.They melt in your fingers (the first sign of high quality). We enjoyed the Milk chocolate toasted coconut, the milk chocolate peanut butter truffle, the milk chocolate espresso truffle, dark chocolate truffle, dark chocolate coconut haystack, dark chocolate cashew. WARNING! Their chocolate may be good, but their customer service will leave you with a STALE taste in your mouth. For Easter I ordered 12 eggs of various sizes for over $350.00! When I went to pick them up, I realized I was 1 egg short. I spoke to the manager ( I WAS a regular customer) and asked if she could comp me even a small egg. (That would be less than a 5% discount on an almost $400.00 order). She adamantly and steadfastly refused!
