After visiting Galena many times, we finally made our way to the Galena Bakehouse and we FELL IN LOVE! We stopped by the first night to pickup some coffee, a chocolate chip cookie treat, and a box of macrons to go. The shop is absolutely adorable from entrance to exit! Even before entering we loved the adorable building with perfect blue paint with white trim on the red brick. The building is well maintained and clean. While it is small, they keep the space streamlined and open. The baked good window, the sweet treats fridge, and coffee/tea areas are all distinct with their own personalities and delicious displays. On top of the clean and inviting space, prices were reasonable for such high quality products and staff were friendly and inviting. The line can sometimes be long, but it is worth the wait. Lots to love here! Back to the food, the chocolate chip cookie didn't make it far. We ate it right outside and loved every decadent bite. The cold brew was refreshing and tasty. We ate the macrons throughout the day and loved every bite! My favorites were the lemon and pistachio. My husband's favorites were the vanilla and birthday cake. The flavors were very prominent and delicious. Yum! Our final day, we wanted to try the breakfast! While I got ready at the Airbnb, my husband went to get the 2 Empanada Meal that comes with a fruit cup. We also got cold brew coffee and a Chipa. Everything was so scrumptious and fresh! The fruit cup was a perfect healthy pair to the baked goods. The empanadas were both great. We tried the "Egg, Sausage, & Cheddar" and "Egg White, Tomato, Basil, Spinach & Parmesan" empanadas. Both were great and we couldn't pick a favorite. We were glad we got both. The chipa was also so good...unlike anything we've had before. Per their website, it is a "Savory Cheese Biscuit made with tapioca flour, Cheddar cheese, & Parmesan cheese. Gluten Free." If you have never tried a Chipa, we would recommend it! And once again, the cold brew was perfect! Galena Bakehouse has won our hearts and tummies! We look forward to stopping by the next time we are in town! read more

This bakery is absolutely one of the best! The pastries and variety of them, makes it so hard to choose just one along with the delicious empanadas they offer. I took some for the road for my family but we ended up having a taste of the snickerdoodle and chocolate chip cookie, the chipa biscuit, cheddar cheese scone and some empanadas! Our first time in Galena, Illinois and it was so much fun!!! Shopped around all the shops and decided to pay a visit to this cute little Galena Bakeshop and it was just soooo adorable! My son ordered the chocolate chip cookie and it was HUGE, I wanted the spinach and cheese empanada but they were out so I opted for the egg, sausage and cheese empanada and that was delicious and the hubs got the berry muffin and he said that was good. Service was excellent! They were so nice! He heated up my empanada so I can eat it right outside on their bench on this cool but lovely October weather. We absolutely loved everything. I stopped in on Sunday morning and the bakehouse is so cute! We got a bunch of things to bring home. I ordered a few macarons, pain au chocolat, coffee cake, cinnamon roll and raspberry cream cheese croissant danish. It was all so good. The employee who helped us was so nice and explained some for the ingredients of the desserts we weren't sure of. Went here on a Saturday and came back on Sunday because it was so good. The owners/employees were super friendly and great at giving suggestions. Over the weekend we ended up getting the raspberry danish, chocolate chip cookie, snickerdoodle, monster cookie, cranberry oat cookie, egg white empanada, beef picadillo empanada, spinach & artichoke empanada, and the shredded buffalo chicken empanada. All were very tasty and high quality. I think the favorites were the danish, buffalo chicken empanada, and chocolate chip cookie. You could definitely taste the high quality chocolate in it. My suggestion would be to heat up any of the cookies for a few seconds though to get a gooeyness to them. The only reason that this isn't 5 stars is that when we got the empanada meal, it came with a side kale caesar salad that was too salty even without the dressing. Not sure why it was overly salty, as you really couldn't see any salt crystals, but I couldn't eat it. Overall, I would say this is a must stop place in Galena. There's also plenty of parking nearby, and lots if the street parking is full. Try any of the cookies, pastries, or empanadas. If we get back, I really want to try out their version if the cosmic brownie, it looks spot on!! read more

Wow! I may have found my favorite bakery... but why is it all the way in Galena?? (Enter crying emoji here.) From the moment I walked in, I felt welcome. The person behind the counter--an owner, I think--was really friendly, as were all the staff. I bought a bunch of items here. I had planned to get just a cinnamon roll and empanada for a quick breakfast and ended up piling on, so we try a bit of everything throughout the day as we made our way back and got home. Everything we've had is delicious. The empanada is amazing--so good that I'm going to stop in the way out of town and get at least one or two more, and maybe several if they tell me they freeze well. They have a perfectly flaky crust and are filled to bursting. I had a tiny bit of the lemon muffin I bought for my partner and it was really good: I think they may use lemon zest in the muffin because I could taste the lemon's oils and not just the juice. I bought some macarons--one of each--for the macaron enthusiast (it's not me) to try and enjoy. We had the macarons yesterday, and they were really good--even for macarons that had been in the refrigerator overnight (which I'm sure is probably the way wrong way to store them, but we were too full to try them). I had a bite of each of them and they were pretty good (remember, I'm not a fan of macarons) and my partner really loved them. Galena Bakehouse also has some nice merchandise. I bought what they call a French basket because I thought it would be really helpful at the farmers market or grocery. They also had canvas totes, which I prefer for shopping to the standard, branded reusable bags that stores themselves sell, so I bought one of those too. They had several bottles of wine and champagne as well as orange juice for folks to make their own mimosas, and some celebratory supplies too (small plates, maybe candles, and so on). They have aperol, which I forgot to buy. They rent picnic baskets, which is a really fun service! I wish they sold them because I was ready to buy one (I don't know why but nice quality picnic baskets are tough to find). I did buy a nice big blanket that I can use when I visit the Grant Park Music Festival this summer. I started writing this review when I was still in town, and had planned to visit and buy several more of the breakfast empanadas to bring home with me and freeze. When I returned, they were no longer selling the breakfast empanadas but had moved to lunch, which included a vegetarian one (spinach, cheese, and possibly artichoke), and a beef picadillo one. Both were so freaking good, and the beef one didn't have any cheese so my significant other enjoyed it as well. I almost didn't come to Galena Bakehouse, because I wanted to make a single stop for pastries and coffee and it didn't seem like Galena Bakehouse sold the latter. I'm glad I decided that two stops wouldn't be that much trouble! I wish they'd make their way to Chicago... Manhattan's loss is Galena's gain. read more

Good morning!!! We were right there as the open sign sprang to life and the door welcomed us in to a world of tasty treats and very delicious coffee. I tried the gluten free double chocolate chip muffin as well as the gluten free pumpkin muffin while my love tried their chocolate chip cookie, apple pie croissant Danish and carmel macchiato. Even before the coffee was ready for our first sip, the warm and gooey chocolate chip muffin was all over our lips and fingers causing us to giggle like school children. We actually felt sorry for the pumpkin muffin, which was to die for, but had to follow in the shadows of the most amazing muffin that we have ever had. We really didn't have much of a problem since we quickly ate the pumpkin one and ordered two more gluten free double chocolate chip. We walked maybe about twenty steps before we tried the apple pie croissant danish and seriously had to fight the urge to turn back around to buy more. This was the best experience here in Galena this time around and we will forever return from now on. read more

What an incredible little shop. I scoped this place out because I eat gluten free, and the treats did not disappoint. I got a selection macarons plus a double chocolate muffin and a hot lavender London Fog. Divine! My friends got an empanada and a danish and truly enjoyed them. Everything tastes homemade but looks like a designer pastry shop. And service was wonderful. The only downside was that the interior was small. I'm no stranger to bakeries, and this place is the best I've had. The chocolate croissant rivals those I've had in Paris- there is clearly some kind of witchcraft happening with the perfectly flaky layers and the incredible quality chocolate. My son was obsessed with the macarons (the hazelnut was my personal fave), and my daughter couldn't get enough of the berry muffins- we're talking big, fresh, berries in those muffins. I never would have known it was vegan had we not returned multiple times -- really nice that they have such great vegan and gluten free options on top of everything else. We tried the cookies from down the street, but regretted it as there was no comparison to the cookies they have at Galena Bakehouse- they're truly in a league of there own. And can I just say - thank you for not putting raisins in your monster cookies! I could not leave this review without mentioning the empanadas. Oh, the empanadas...this was a new experience for me (never had an empanada before) and this was one of the most satisfying and tasty breakfasts I've had- sit down, to go or otherwise. My entire family loved them (ages 2,4, and 39), and they were the perfect size as well. Highly recommend having the savory ones warmed up- SO good. The coffee drinks were also really thoughtfully and carefully prepared, and that is the feeling that echoed through the entire place. The owners clearly have the highest standards- nothing out of place, clean, classy, bright, and happy- you feel like you're walking into something very special when you enter. Plus, the owners were there and they were so fantastic - and so nice to my kids as well. Worth noting that before our vacation ended, we came back to load up and bring some of everything home with us, and it was all still tasty a day or two after as well. There are so many adorable places in Galena, but this is the place that made us all wish we had one closer to us. They have it all. It was our first trip to Galena and before heading back to the concrete jungle Sunday morning, the boss sent me into town for baked goods and coffee for a carby/sugary/caffeinated pick me up since crying infant kept us awake most of the night. I walked in the door about 30 seconds after they opened the doors and there were already multiple people in line in front of me. When people are stacked up before someone opens at 8am on a Sunday morning? Pretty good sign. We got an empanada (I hope the dough is house made, because it is killer), a gluten free double chocolate muffin (which tastes like a gooey flourless chocolate cake) and easily one of the best cinnamon rolls I've had in my life. It was so soft in the middle it bordered on underdone, which is perfection. These guys know what they're doing. Large cold brew to top it off and our day was off to the races. It's a little bit separated from the main drag on Main Street, but it's worth seeking the Bakehouse out. We'll be back and back and back. If Yelp gave more than five stars this is a place that would surely get it! The Galena Bakehouse should be your daily if not twice daily (I may be speaking from personal experience here) destination for all things absolutely delicious in the quaint town of Galena. There's probably a reason it was the first thing we saw coming down Main Street during our recent first time visit to the area. :) I mean really just go, walk with purpose, or run (no one's judging here) to this cute little bakery. The couple that owns and runs it are doing so impeccably, and are absolutely lovely on top of it (thank you Geoff and Alex)! Their selection of fresh baked items vary by day, and trust me when I say if you want it, get it! It's not going to be there if you second guess or decide on it later. They're also making smaller batches as to not waste any by day's end which is commendable in today's disposable world. Absolutely everything that we had was exceptional! Not only super delicious, but had you dreaming of returning (which we did every day there, foregoing trying anywhere else, it's just that good). I think if I had to choose, my favs for breakfast were egg empanadas (both the sausage, egg and cheese as well as the egg white/tomato/spinach/basil/parm) and a pain au chocolat, as well as one of Alex's yummy mochas! For a lunchtime treat, trust me, get more empanadas of their afternoon varieties! Both of those too were also mouth watering and savory. I'm getting a little mouth watery just typing about them haha This will surely be our go to anytime we are back in town, and if they ever decide to ship, I'll be right there on the mailing list! :) Sorry for the lack of photos (I usually rely heavily on them when looking for somewhere myself), however everything was so yummy we ate first and then had an oh darn moment afterwards. I just spent this last weekend in Galena and was pleasantly surprised by all the new things that have popped up within the last two years, this place being one of them. The baked goods are out of this world good. We ended up going both days and made a pit stop before we drove home. Throughout the weekend we tried the breakfast empanada with egg and sausage, beef empanada, buffalo chicken empanada, the spinach and feta quiche, the cherry scone, the snickerdoodle cookie, the cinnamon roll, and the Argentinian cheese bread.
