Adorable but INSANELY EXPENSIVE and the employees are angry in spades. The senior woman at the cash register was terrible to the poor man in front of us - who was having a hard time and I wanted to hug him for how awful she was to him. Everything we needed was twice the price as the grocery store, so we bought a couple souvenirs (honey and a magnet) and left. What a shame. read more

We have already been 3 times. Everyone is so friendly. Had everything we needed for breakfast and snacks. Their coffee station has a ton of different syrups to try. Did breakfast sandwiches. Tried sample of mustards. Loved how you can sip while shopping. They have sitting inside by the deli and lots of seating outside. Neat place, love seeing all the old signs and fixtures. This place is an absolute must if you're in Helen. Wife and I stopped in for lunch after a hike in the Natl Forest. Really unique setup- inside is a full service grocery store. Outside is a patio & bar. Food prices are very fair. Standout was the almond chicken salad in a croissant. I'm not even a chicken salad fan but it was delicious. Also grabbed a big German hefe for $7 that I've never seen anywhere before. Service on the patio was great. Cashier inside was a little short, but to be fair, they were very busy. We had lunch at Betty's yesterday and immediately fell in love with the sisters behind the bar. They were super friendly, fun, and truly made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, that's really the highlight of our visit. We were starving, so we all ordered hearty plates. My daughter ordered chicken strips with okra and corn. I had the same but swapped for mac & cheese and green beans. My husband ordered the roast beef with green beans and mac & cheese. All meals came with a cat head biscuit. The food looked great, but there was zero seasoning in anything. I honestly don't know how you mess up green beans, but somehow it happened. I barely made it through two bites of the chicken just to get something in my stomach. Then I tried the mac & cheese... OMG. I can't even describe the taste--I discreetly spit it into my napkin. Thankfully my daughter shared her okra, which was the only decent thing on my plate. Her "corn" turned out to be creamed corn, which she doesn't like. She thought she ordered regular kernel corn, so she was disappointed. She used enough ketchup to get down two chicken strips. My husband's roast beef was... interesting. It was more like a shredded roast-and-rice casserole. Not sure if that's even a thing, but that's what it resembled. He said it tasted good and ate it all, but even he couldn't touch the mac & cheese. He poured almost an entire salt shaker on his green beans just to make them edible. In the end, the best thing on the table was the cat head biscuit. Again, the staff was absolutely wonderful--truly the saving grace of this place. But as friendly as they are, the food alone isn't enough to bring us back. read more

TL;DR BUYER BEWARE of the charges you're getting and sadly, if you get a sandwich from the deli, CHECK IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE. The store is stocked and it's the closest place to get supplies / groceries. The store is well stocked, I will give them that, hence, the 2 stars but BUYER BEWARE of the charges at the register.... We came here after a long day to sit at the bar, but ended up going to the store instead, will have a separate review for the porch. We didn't have dinner so decided to get sammies made and eat in our hotel. What a bizarre ordering system first of all, you grab a paper and pen, write on check the boxes next to what you want, and set it on the counter top and then wait for your sandwich. This reminded me of the soup naz! ordering practice from Seinfeld. We got 2 subs, with different toppings, where each is .59c on top of the base price for "ham" which was $6.99. My husband got the more "expensive" special Italian for $10.99 + all his .59c toppings. Well, we crossed off more than then we received, and still got charged, and instead of my lesser priced sub we were charged for 2 @ $10.99 + all my husbands 6 toppings, when I chose 5 but neither of us our black olives... and the dude making the subs didn't say, note it, or cross it off so we didn't know until we got back and sat down to eat later at the hotel. If you don't have something we checked off then CROSS IT OFF, TELL T HE CUSTOMER, AND TRAIN THE CASHIER TO UNDERSTAND. This wasn't a mistake, because both of us checked olives, and neither got it, but we were charged. It's not about the 1.20 it's principle. We spent $98 in the store that night. Maybe it was just the youngish cashier helping us, that didn't enjoy the job, or enjoys ripping off non-locals, or maybe just wasn't paying attention... Maybe it was an honest mistake twice by the deli person about the olives, Either way our next trip to Helen, we will not be patronizing this local business, and that is a shame because that is why we travel, to shop local. read more

Every time we are in Helen, we make a beeline to Betty's! Today we got the sandwich special. It's great, you sit down and fill out your order sheet. We got the special, sandwich, chips and a pickle with a cookie. The store itself is well stocked. It has local favorites like jumping goat coffee. It also has a great honor code coffee system, $1 a cup! It's also just a sweet place to stop and have a chat. It's a nice feeling at Betty's! read more

Betty's Country Store is cute as a button! offers a good selection of produce, regular grocery items, and a deli that serves delicious food .. prices are above average but not to crazy... My family and I visited here this weekend. My husband and I had been here 2 years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, this visit was not good. There were 8 of us (5 adults and 3 kids). Our food took over 40 minutes to receive (and it was not very busy) and when it did come, my daughters order was not there, neither were the sides my son and husband ordered. The waitress said she would be right back with the missing items. In the meantime, the others started eating (I shared 1/2 of my sub with my daughter) when I happened to turn my 1/2 of sub over to discover mold on the bun. I took it back myself to the deli - the gentleman apologized and made another 1/2 sub for me. I waited and returned to the table to find my daughter still had not gotten her sandwich - it took another 5 minutes! When it did come the sides were still missing! I don't normally review places, but this was an especially bad experience and with everything put together I would have expected something maybe offered to take off the check - but other than a quick "so sorry" nothing was said or done. Needless to say - we will not be going back to Betty's on our next visit. read more

Cute place. I'd purchased 4 bundles of firewood. After trying a few times (with the help of fire starters) to get some of the wood going, I noticed that more than a few of them were damp, even mildewed inside. So I returned them. The cashiers at the register were kind. However I received condescension and rudeness from the manager. Even after I'd offered to show her video and pictures I'd taken to better illustrate what was wrong (which she refused to look at). As a manager in a tourist town (Asheville, NC), I know how frustrating it can be working with customers all day long. I also know how important it is to manage to bite my tongue when I don't understand why someone is returning an item they've purchased and to listen with an open ear. I did not receive that courtesy. But rather a snide comment/question and insult about where I'm from and what I "should know" about starting a fire (I'm from West Virginia, btw). Completely unnecessary. I did receive a refund. And ended up purchasing different firewood from a gas station on the way back to my cabin that lit just fine. My gosh this store is PRECIOUS! I'm from a big city so this little jewel has all the right feels at Christmas time. Small town vibes here in Helen so a dream for me. They were having their Christmas party this night so instead of being greeted we had about 3 people shout at us, "We're closing in 5 minutes!" I was like well hello to you too lol. We had checked online and said they were closing at 8 so we got there at 5:55 but they were closing early for their event. Understandable that they wanted to have their very deserved party but say hi lol. What a really cool little store near Helen GA. My wife and I stopped in here during our anniversary trip. All sorts of neat little items but also a nice array of high end clothing as well. Won't lie. I was shocked that this place was super reasonably priced. We needed to get coffee filters and some other necessities. I didn't feel like they were overpriced even though they were in a small town. We ended up getting some beers and a pretzel at the bar and they were reasonably priced (almost 4 for domestic beer and 10 dollars for hot cheese and mustard with a pretzel). This local quaint store is located right in town - making it convenient and expensive for meat, groceries and shopping. I expected it to be overpriced being downtown in a tourist area but the prices were very reasonable. It's a country store with enough groceries to be a grocery store, as well as souvenirs, clothes, gifts, huge meat market, fishing bait (and you can get fishing license here), wine shop, and a bar. One of the best perks is that it has free parking across the street...just make sure you only go to Betty's when you park here or you might get towed. Betty's also has biscuits and coffee (and other breakfast options) to go starting at 7AM. While Helen may be a touristy area, it is surprisingly hard to find breakfast and coffee anywhere before 8AM, so I hit up Betty's a lot in the mornings. read more

Considering this is the only place to buy groceries in Helen I have to give it 5 stars. It's a fun country store that is always busy and lively. They have everything you would need for a stay in Helen. They also have a liquor store. When you're done shopping you can walk around where the kids can play on a tractor or play cornhole while you grab a beer and hang out. It was a fun place to go! read more
