I was so looking forward to this and then was incredibly disappointed. I paid for both shows. The Monet show was enjoyable and lasted about 45 minutes, but the Van Gogh show only lasted about 20 minutes. There was little motion added to his art like they did with Monet, and the area was stuffy despite big fans being in the building. Thankful that this experience was a comped ticket experience, but even so, what a waste of $12 on 3-hours (minimum) parking in the lot....y'all, by the time you pay to park, you'll want to leave. We were in and out within eight or ten minutes max, and that was because we dragged out each step to make the most of the time and effort it took to get here. Literally felt like walking through an AI drafted experience that scraped info from Wikipedia...they clearly didn't even consider hiring a quality UX designer to ensure that the paragraphs were properly formatted.... Hopeful it wouldn't be a complete of waste, we thought maybe we could get some cool photo opps with the Van Gogh sunflower projection show...they didn't even have the right show playing. My wife, daughter, and I recently visited the Beyond Van Gogh exhibit while we were in Austin, and I'm glad I didn't check Yelp beforehand--some of the reviews might have scared us away. Yes, the exhibit is set up in a warehouse, partitioned with black curtains that create hallways leading to a large educational display room and the art immersion room. And yes, there were portable fans and A/C units everywhere to keep the air circulating. But honestly, it wasn't an issue for us. We visited from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm when it was 95 degrees outside, and the inside was perfectly fine and relaxing. Maybe we got lucky, or perhaps it's different in the later afternoon, but our experience was comfortable and enjoyable. Our daughter, who isn't much of a walker, loved being able to sit on a bench and have the art come to her. The VR experience was neat for an extra $10 if you've never worn a VR headset before, though it might not be as impressive for those already familiar with VR. The gift shop at the end was a pleasant surprise with reasonably priced gifts and apparel. Overall, I'd recommend this exhibit to anyone looking for a laid-back, casual, and relaxing art appreciation experience. It was a great experience for our family. read more

I was able after several months of wrangling to get a refund from my credit card company for this abomination. What you have to do is to dispute the charge on your credit card. You can describe the lack of air conditioning the incredibly poor production. The 20 year-old DLP projectors that should've been retired 10 years ago and if you've made any attempts to get a refund previously or contact Paquin entertainment in Toronto. We're huge Impressionism fans, so we were really looking forward to this. Bottom line? Interesting, well done projections and animations, but could have been so much more with little cost and effort. Oh, and far too expensive. With such a wonderful trove of subject matter to work with, they stopped far short of making this a great experience. Here's my honest review on the Beyond Van Gogh webpage: "We had hoped for much more, but ended up very disappointed, much like the extensive numbers of mediocre reviews. You had a great opportunity to really put out a great product, but clearly cheaped out. This was not it. Why? The price is far too high for the experience, and you are keeping many paying customers away. Half the price would still be more than the experience was worth, but you would have attracted far more attendees to more than make up the difference in profits. From outside: You have terrible signage and directions for parking. We parked two blocks away and could have parked onsite if we had known. Once we got to the parking lot, it was very unclear where the entrance was, with little posters you could barely notice. Immediately inside, it was clear that air conditioning was barely functional in cooling the room. The entry through a maze of black cloth was just plain lame and disorienting, and could have been more effective with historical contexts and photos of the artists' lives. Photos in descriptions are pretty misleading. As a photographer, I was hoping for more juxtapositions of pieces on different internal structures, and many more varied surfaces that were actually part of the building, with several separated sections to walk around in. Having the projections on essentially a 4-walled room, with only a couple of internal columns that looked like afterthoughts, produced a very static experience. Most people essentially stayed in one place on a bench, instead of being encouraged to interact with the space by moving through to see different surfaces. Safety items like fire extinguishers and the exits could have been screened mostly out of sight to encourage a more immersive experience. The ugly structures visible above the screens were also very distracting. All of this distracted from the experience for us, although the projections and the animations were really quite interesting. This was just a room playing a video in all 4 sides. That's it. Not an informative videos mostly just some nice screen savers. Nothing more. Total waste of time, energy and money. My girlfriend and I went to this exhibit with high hopes and were supremely disappointed. It was 99 degrees outside and 97 degrees inside. We opted for the VR option for $10 more, and the guy interrogated us about if we bought the tickets even though the person at the front knew we did. His bad attitude continued with zero instructions on how to use the VR equipment. Suffice to say, I didn't even get to see the VR experience. DO NOT waste your money on this poorly run event. Not worth it - go to the local museum instead. No flow to the exhibit, music was not complimentary to the art, staff seemed rather annoyed they had to be there. Worst of all was no adequate air conditioning for the space. Two rented units with two ducts blowing about 20' above a crowded room. This was an awesome immersive experience. Although the museum experience allows you to see the art (even if some are not originals) and your intake is I dare say more cerebral this version affects you holistically. I myself had a sense of calm come over me as if I could hear van Gogh's voice as I read the words and could see his brush strokes as the pieces came together. As you walk through you can feel the ups and downs in his life and then your amazed at what came from his mind. This was definitely a great experience, a bit on the high side price wise so be sure that you know what your getting when buy tickets. read more

Aside from the fact that it's not in a building and in an event style tent (with ac)- this was a phenomenal exhibit. It's a little bit pricey but if you love Van Gogh, art, our want to try something new I would say it's totally worth it. Went during non-peak hours and it was incredible to see and experience. The entrance goes through Van Gogh's history and explains his life and art. It then takes you into the moving art before the immersive room. Once you're in the immersive room they have art moving everywhere along with music. You can sit on a bench or relax on a bean bag and watch any of the walls light up and move through masterpieces. Was anyone else hit with a $92 parking fine after attending this event at the Austin Statesman location? It was my first time there and I did not see a sign or kiosk for parking. I disputed it and offered to pay the original parking amount for the 2 hrs I was there BUT it was denied and was then "graciously" reduced to $72 SMH. I went to the show in Arlington. It was beyond amazing, so many wow moments. The Austin show only has banners and quotes in one room and the big room which was nice, but still not as impressive as Arlington. This, maybe worth $30 or $40 dollars. Definitely not worrh $69... Ever wanted to experience Van Gogh and Monet live experience in a sauna? Then this experience is for you! It's now in the old Austin Statesmen building and doesn't have A/C. We went on 6/30 at 3:30. It was 101 outside and not much different inside. When I reached out they said all tickets are non refundable according to go to the terms and conditions. I read the terms and conditions and no where did it say there would be no A/C. Maybe it's the Texas in me but when one pays for an event inside during the summer in Austin, Texas one assumes there will be A/C. Oh and the kicker is no water allowed inside. Cruel! My husband and I visited the Van Gogh exhibit and we enjoyed it. Yes, it was warm inside; but it was very hot that day; and the staff said they had issues with the A/C since the first day. The exhibit was excellent. Parking was confusing; we parked and submitted payment through the posted sign. Two months later, I received a letter from an attorney stating I owed $45.00 for parking at this event; which we already paid $15.50. I am disputing this charge. The attorney is Daniel B Kelley; Centennial, CO. 80111. I don't recommend parking where the event is; unless you want to deal with this attorney. read more

This says the exhibit is located at COTA, but the one I attended in July of 2024 was at the Austin American Statesman building near downtown Austin. First I'll start with the exhibit itself. It was good, but not great. It's a neat concept and the display and transition of Van Gogh's works was very creative and beautiful. It's set to music which is nice, but it would have been even better if there had also been a brief audio explanation of the pieces as they were introduced. There were many pieces I wasn't familiar with and it would have been nice to know what I was looking at. Next, the venue. It was honestly terrible. The exhibit is an old rundown newspaper warehouse and there is basically no A/C! We went in July when it was 99 degrees outside, and it wasn't much cooler inside. This was not disclosed at the time our tickets were purchased or upon entrance to the venue. There were fans and portable A/C units everywhere, but they couldn't keep up. The projection screens and "hallways" are black curtains that were paper-clipped together. The fans and portable A/C units caused the curtains to blow around exposing a bunch of junk behind them as we walked toward the exhibit. Because it's a warehouse the ceilings are open with exposed wires, pipes, and ducting and the acoustics are terrible. What little audio there was, was not audible due to the poor acoustics and the sound of the portable A/C units blowing wide open. All of this was very distracting and made it virtually impossible to be "immersed" in the exhibit. Lastly the floors were stained and the bathrooms were filthy. 3 stars is a generous rating. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. The experience was definitely not worth the ticket price at this venue. read more

I really enjoyed this experience, but maybe it's because I knew what to expect. I knew that there wouldn't be actual van Gogh originals on display - this is happening in multiple cities at the moment and there was no implication of that by the event producers. I knew that it would be art displayed by projectors, but in new and different ways than I've experienced art before. I went in with an open mind and really appreciated this different perspective on his artwork. Beyond van Gogh had a three-part journey - the first part wasn't really my favorite - it was just a room with quotes from van Gogh's brother and I am sure was to help guide context, but I wasn't connecting the dots. The second part was just almost a palette cleanser - lots of colors and concepts recognizable as van Gogh flowing down a wall. Then the third part was THE highlight - it was a large room with a 35-minute loop of van Gogh art set to music and surrounding you on all walls and the floor. I stayed through my first 35-minute loop as well as 2/3 of the next one as it was that interesting to me. The paintings were larger than life - you felt immersed. Things came onto the wall in various degrees of completion - it was interesting to see townscapes get "sketched out" on the wall, for example. I've had the privilege of getting to see van Gogh and other artists' original work in museums during my travels, but never the ability to feel surrounded by the art and see the art in this sort of a perspective. My only negatives were that there were some voiceovers in the audio track in the loop that were hard to comprehend (not sure if it was the volume of them or the clarity of the track) and the gift shop was pretty sparse. It was a decent investment, but I felt like it was a good Sunday diversion out of the Texas summer heat to do something a bit different and cultural. read more

This experience/exhibit is definitely unique - I've been to a few of these, the absolute very best being in Japan. There truly is only one main area that is the heart of the experience and the "set" runs 35 minutes in total - it is a visually immersive experience and a unique way to experience a well-known artist's work. The music the experience was set to was well done, as were the transitions between the different art pieces. The most stunning was the floral imagery - breathtaking and worth some of the ticket price for sure. The entry way has some cute Instagram-able spots but overall, the tickets are pricy and it's at best an hour long experience. Crowd control is good not overly crowded but be prepared to stand in the main area as seating is limited. There is nothing that I'd consider interactive but it is immersive. If you are looking for a unique albeit pricy art experience this could be a good option, if you can get a promo code or Groupon then I'd say it's totally worth it! read more

I was expecting at least some sort of work was put into this exhibition since they didn't bring any of the paintings. The experience they are talking about is room full of o out of context extracts from Van Gogh letters to his brother and some random reflections about his work. The experience is just a very blandly rendered video of Van Gogh paintings with very amateurish effects to flip from one to the other. Don't waste your money. Go watch the movie Loving Vincent if you want a good artistic experience and a glimpse into the life of the artist. This exhibition seems exploitative, vain, cheap, boring, unimaginative and frankly a scam. read more

We should have read the Texas Monthly article, "No Gogh," before we attended this "very expensive screensaver." With all of the marketing hype we saw on social media, we expected a tribute to Van Gogh on par with the standards of a teamLab exhibition. Instead, the price for admission bought us 35 minutes of what a RISD student could pull together over a weekend in a PowerPoint slide show through copy and pasting from Wikipedia. The experience was maybe worth $5 per person, and certainly not the half hour drive to COTA. Beyond Van Gogh is the Fyre Festival of post-Impressionism: a scam aimed at ripping off gullible millennials. Fly to New York and visit MOMA for the real thing before you waste your time or money on this travesty. read more

The whole "experience" is a crappy slideshow that looks like it was out together in PowerPoint in 15 minutes, with a bunch of random texts and meaningless quotes imposed over images you can find on google. Then there's the big room that's just a bunch of projectors displaying 3 or 4 Van Gogh paintings on the walls and floors. They're not even good projectors, the art looks pixelated and cheap. Port-a pottys, every employee is a teenager on a summer job and it shows. Very minimal air conditioning in the exhibit and no air conditioning at all in the tents where you can buy water and junk snacks. read more
