Trendy, it is. Healthy, it is also! Matcha is known to be a superfood that is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, improves energy and increases energy levels to name a few benefits. Riding on this wave is The Smelly Cheesecake Cafe with some inspired matcha dishes, namely the matcha cheesecake which was absolutely phenomenal. The top layer of matcha was fluffy, added a pop of pale green color to an otherwise traditionally monochromatic dessert and the flavor was quite subtle but definitely noticeable. The bottom cheesecake was decadent, added a bit of tang and was supremely smooth and creamy. The matcha layer made up about 80% of the dessert while the actual cheesecake layer made up about 20% which may seem like a huge discrepancy but eaten together, it was the perfect concoction as it wasn't too rich, wasn't too sweet and wasn't too tangy. Portion-wise, it was a bit on the smaller side as it left me craving more. Before I talk about the iced matcha latte, I must preface this by saying that I'm a big fan of Starbucks' Green Tea frap. The one I had at the Smelly Cheesecake Cafe was much less sweet and just as creamy and refreshing. I don't have a single bone to pick when it comes to this spot.
