Hire Kirk if you want a design that stands out beyond ordinary backyard pools. When it's completed, it will be a work of art and functionality. We had a fairly large yard with a tall slope in the back. Kirk designed a modern pool with layered walls as a backdrop to blend everything in while still keeping the sense of spaciousness and softening the slope. Proportions and details are his strong points. Everything is in the right place, and nothing overpowers anything else. The long wooden bench in front of the raised bond beam is a beautiful feature. We contacted Kirk after reading him describe his design concepts behind a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired pool. We knew that we had similar design and architectural tastes, so we hired him even though we live in San Diego and he works in Phoenix. He came out to visit our home and survey the yard. Then we worked via online meetings which is perfectly fine. We had gotten a couple of designs from pool companies but those really just amounted to a large hole with water in the ground, with some water and fire features. Those wouldn't have had the impact that Kirk's comprehensive design does. After having done several indoor remodels, we began to really appreciate the value of design. You will have to watch the budget, though, as fine details cost money and not every builder can do it. We first employed Mr. Bianchi in May 2021 to create a 2D schematic design, a 3D drawing, and a 3D video for our front and back yards. His agreement stated that it would take him 10-12 weeks to complete the drawings, however, Mr. Bianchi did not show us the drawings until January 2022, 32 weeks later (Mr. Bianchi did not provide digital copies until February 2023 after much prodding). At first we were patient with the pace of the project as Mr. Bianchi became unavailable from a professional capacity during the months of August & September 2021 due to personal reasons, and as we liked the design and schematics that were shown to us in January 2022, we commissioned Mr. Bianchi to lead the project with his contractor teams. From there it took another 15 weeks for Mr. Bianchi and his contractor teams to provide us with a proposal and budget, whereas his agreement states this typically takes 4-8 weeks to occur. It was at this time that we paid Mr. Bianchi an initial deposit of 50%, and then we were to pay subsequent installments when hardscaping, pool and landscaping commenced. At that same time (May 2022) our backyard was demoed - palm trees and bushes were removed, the decking around our pool was taken out, the pool was drained, and the plaster was chipped out; and we provided Mr. Bianchi with our HOA bylaws and asked him to submit the designs as soon as possible as our HOA can take several weeks to review submissions. Even with constant reminders via emails, texts and phone calls, Mr. Bianchi did not submit the necessary paperwork until October 2022 (almost 7 months after our backyard was demoed). My favorite response from Mr. Bianchi in August 2022 was the following: "I'm still here doing my piece. I have had a very unproductive month but chipping away at it over the weekend." The HOA finally approved the drawing in December 2022. In the HOA submission packet that Mr. Bianchi submitted, he stated that the project would be completed on 3/31/2023, at this point we were beyond ecstatic as we thought the project would finally be finished. However, in February 2023 when nothing had progressed with the backyard, we confronted Mr. Bianchi regarding the March finish date, and he stated that the date was simply a "best guess" and that it was done to appease the HOA. Throughout the project we paid all our bills on time in regard to the contractors and Bianchi Design. However, in March 2023, Mr. Bianchi demanded that he be paid for the commencement of hardscaping and landscaping, neither of which had yet started. He stated that he was working with the structural engineer and that the shade structure designs would be finished by the end of March 2023 (Actual: City of Scottsdale does not approve the drawings until October 2023). The hardscape portion of the project was finally completed in April 2024, and at that time Mr. Bianchi was terminated from the project and the final payment for landscaping was withheld because landscaping had not yet commenced, and we decided not to continue with his services. That same month Mr. Bianchi took us to small claims court to contest the final payment. The Hearing Officer found in our favor due to the many delays that were directly due to Mr. Bianchi and his inability to follow the language in his own contractual agreement.
