As a Vietnam War veteran, I had read about Patricia Devore's Veterans Smile Program―a nonprofit that provides low-income veterans with free dental care―in the Kane County Connects Newsletter, written by Jacob Zimmerman, Superintendent of the Kane Country Veterans Assistance Commission. That's how I found Dr. Khanna. Along with Patricia Devore and Jacob Zimmerman, Dr. Khanna is another very bright star in our universe. Out of the clear blue sky, he came along and volunteered for Smile to fix my broken tooth. I must say that I have never experienced a better, more genial dentist than Dr. Khanna. He provided me with first-class dental care. In my judgment, Dr. Khanna is a superior dentist and very much more competent and caring than all the rest I have met put together. At 73, I have met quite a few dentists through the years, never having found one that I truly trusted and felt comfortable with. Until now! Dr. Khanna is also very kind and gentle, and incredibly attentive, not to mention incredibly generous, working a full two hours on my tooth with more to come and calling me at home later that day to see if I was OK. Then I visited Smile's Web site and its Facebook page and I learned I was not the only veteran he helped on Veterans Day. I will have to ask Patricia Devore, the founder of Veterans Smile, How did she find a man like him? He is a very good man and a genuine volunteer in his community with a great, caring heart! Abraham Lincoln was a most principled, knowledgeable, ambitious, caring, and driver man, representing the very best of mankind. And, like him, their concern for veterans is astonishing to me. While she prepared to fill a cavity, I told her about Dr. Khanna's gift to me, which she thought was extraordinary and wonderful, commenting that crowns are so "expensive." Then, while she was drilling, I heard her say, "It's pretty." When she took her drill out of my mouth I asked her what she meant, and she explained, "Your new crown. It's beautiful!" She was simply admiring Dr. Khanna's crown work and paying her professional respects to him and his stellar, unsurpassable achievement. Dr. Khanna, you are truly a miracle and absolutely one of the most decent human beings I have ever met. You deserve hundreds of stars for your gifts to our nation's veterans! TLDR; Beware of unnecessary (scam) procedures and make sure to verify your insurance benefits…read moreyourself. My insurance benefits were changing, so I needed to get in quickly for a cleaning. Every place I called was booked for weeks/months out. Envision A Smile was able to get me scheduled within a day--maybe even the same day. Should have been the first red flag. It had been a couple years since my last cleaning, so I was expecting it wouldn't be an easy appointment and I was already anxious about it. They brought me in and started the Xrays with someone who seems like they had never done them before. I was very patient--everyone has to learn somehow--but the next hygienist came in and said they all had to be redone. I had twice as many Xrays taken as I needed to and it took well over 45 minutes--no exaggeration. The dentist then came in, poked around a bit, then stared in silence at the Xrays for what seemed like an uncomfortably long time. He then said that I needed two fillings and a deep cleaning because the buildup on my teeth was so bad. I never even heard of a deep cleaning, but I took him at his word because he's the medical professional. He said they couldn't do one that day, but that I'd have to schedule one ASAP. It was Friday and they pushed for a Tuesday appointment--the first they had available. They handed me a quote from my insurance and sent me on my way having not cleaned my teeth. Because the procedures were going to cost over 1k, I wanted to make sure my insurance would cover it before going ahead. It turns out that my insurance would cover next to nothing and that the $200 copay I was quoted was pretty much pulled out of thin air. When I called to speak with the person at Envision A Smile who "deals with insurance all the time", she proceeded to tell me that my insurance was "strange" and that she based my quote on "what insurance will typically pay". No preauthorization. Not even a courtesy call to my insurance to verify my benefits until AFTER I had already called my insurance and was told nothing would be covered. In short, if I'd trusted them at their word I would have went in thinking that I was going to pay $200, but really it would have been five times that. Confirming my benefits is ultimately my responsibility, but the fake copay quote seems pretty deceptive. I asked them if it was possible to get a regular cleaning in the meantime since that's all my insurance would cover, and the front desk person said that after I had been "diagnosed" with "periodontal disease", they couldn't go back and do a regular cleaning. The dentist had never told me that I had periodontal disease, so the receptionist using that language was terribly unprofessional. A lot of WebMDing later and I was convinced my teeth were going to fall out. After this whole ordeal, I told them I'd need a second opinion. Fast forward to today (nearly two anxious months later) when I went to a dentist who's a family friend. Not only didn't I need a deep cleaning, but the two cavities that the Envision A Smile dentist pointed out were already filled. There's some staining and they may need to be refilled in the future if they start to bother me, but they were fine to leave alone for now. Not one bit of this was explained to me at Envision A Smile. I was the perfect mark because I hadn't been to the dentist in a while and I was willing to take a medical professional at their word. My mistake and I've learned. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else. Their open availability is pretty telling.
