After a day of sightseeing, before heading on the 2 Hour Dr. back to Kingston, we decided to have a bite to eat. As there was rain, we opted for a place that was close and this fit the bill. The Restaurant itself is well kept. We ordered adult beverages. I ordered a Manhattan and my wife, a glass of red wine. Additionally, we ordered their beer cheese appetizer. Our drinks arrived, and my Manhattan did not seem to be one. In fact, it tasted like an old-fashioned to me. After a little bit of discussion with the waitress and bartender, I decided just to finish the beverage and get something else. The beer cheese was served with pretzels and tortilla chips. It was actually fairly good tasting! My wife ordered their chicken schnitzel dinner while I ordered their chicken curry bowl. The chicken schnitzel was fairly straightforward and my wife thought it tasted good. The chicken curry was a different flare than I was thinking of, but not bad. They seem to be very, very busy, we we're on the verge of departing when we finally were approached by our waitress, maybe it was the rain or the protesters for the high speed rail? We happened to be near Sparks St. on a Sunday and peeked at their 10 CAD specials. I couldn't believe they had bucket oysters and wings on the happy hour specials menu. The bartender took our order. We tried one of the Canadian beer *blood brothers shumai IPA* which was fantastic. Ordered the 1.5 LB Prince Edward Island oyster bucket which was spicy plus super awesome. Also got the drunken duck wings which was a pleasant surprise, soft, juicy and a real treat. The BBQ chicken flatbread was perfect. At the end of it, we were stuffed with happiness. A spontaneous trip with the fam to Sparks street, on an empty stomach, and we found ourselves at the Bier Markt. While we wanted to sit on the patio, outside, where it was packed, the 6 year old made the decision to dine indoors, away from the wasps. We were the only diners indoors, sigh. It was so nice outside too!! Anywho, I wish we looked over the menu prior, because there wasn't anything "kid friendly" on the menu (now looking online, there is a small kids menu, which we were never given). We stuck with a small bowl of fries for the kids, which we ordered promptly, and it arrived promptly. The hubby and I also had a hard time deciding what we wanted to eat. He went with a prime rib sandwich and I went with the crudo salad. He enjoyed the sandwich, and upgraded his fries to a poutine which was good. My crudo salad was boring. I'm trying to eat healthier when dining out, but it was very, very boring, and quiet large. Enough for two to share. I actually ponded half of it off to my husband, which he tried refusing. The salad was super oily, consisting of mostly arugula, with some bocconcini, crispy chickpeas, green beans, red onion cucumber and tomato. It was missing some zing. Service was OK, I guess. I think the bartender may have been serving us, since we were the only diners indoors. She tried her best, was nice, and brought us what we needed when we asked, checked in on us once, but it was not very attentive. My water glass was never refilled, and we had to ask for other drink refills, while other water glasses sat empty. Settling the bill took a while. And while I appreciate not being rushed out, the kids were getting restless. There are too many great restaurants in the downtown core. It was a hot day and we'd spent a little time walking around Parliament Hill, so we naturally felt like taking a little respite from the heat. Bier Markt does seem to have a very nice patio but we wanted/needed some of that sweet, sweet AC, so we wandered inside and snagged a sweet booth near the back. We happened to be there during Hoppy Hour, so I grabbed a well-priced pint and we ordered the Mussels Provencale ("1.5 lbs PEI mussels, white wine, red onions, cherry tomatoes, garlic, fresh herbs, baguette") to share. The food arrived pretty quickly and it's great. The mussels have been cooked really well and they go perfectly with those other accompaniments. The included baguette pieces soak up that delicious sauce, too. (Our server was great, as well. He was very patient with us and super helpful.) Earlier this month, I was in the Parliament Hill area for Canada Day festivities. I had such a wonderful time that I needed lunch. It was probably past 2 pm when I was in need of some food. It had been years since I walked along Sparks Street. I headed a bit south to try my luck at an eatery. I saw Nate's Deli and it appealed to me. Sadly, it wasn't open on this holiday. I looked across the street and spotted Bier Markt. I hadn't been to one in years. My first and only experience at one was near Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke. There was a lineup to be seated here. Not all eateries were open, which explained the demand. It was my first full day in Ottawa, on vacation. I wasn't in any rush. I was in line for fifteen minutes. As I was standing in line, it occurred to me that this eatery used to be Zellers. If you include the Winners at the corner of Sparks and O'Connor streets with this eatery, you get the entire old Zellers store. Memories came flooding in. I remember shopping there in the late 90's. I got Jann Arden's Happy CD that had just come out. I also got a portable CD player (yep, I'm dating myself and don't care because portable CD players are still cool in my books) that was on sale. I was such a happy camper listening to that album with headphones on. Ah, memories. This building oozes Italianate style. Yes, I learned that in one of the virtual Yelp events. Who says that Yelp doesn't educate?! You can tell by the floor-to-ceiling windows. The tall, round-headed windows and pronounced stone delineating the storeys scream Italianate style. I wouldn't know when this Zellers had closed down. Most did in the early 2010's, so I'd say the same thing with this store. Let's move on to the present... It was a humid day, with a threat of thunderstorms. I was so close to the front of the line. A woman asked if anyone wanted to sit indoors. That was me. I said yes. She asked if I'd like to sit at the bar. I didn't mind that, either. Give me a cool place to eat and drink, and I'll be good. The host who led me to my bar seat said that there was an 80-minute limit. I will say that if you factor in the wait time to order and get my food, and my eating at a leisurely pace while taking in some fine live music, I stayed there longer than that limit and no one cared. It was pretty comfy sitting at the bar for almost two hours. The length of time was a combination of enjoying my meal, taking in live music, and posting photos up on Yelp. It was perfect. I had a nice server at the bar take my order. I got the following items: - Diet Coke - Pork schnitzel with spaetzle and roasted mushrooms The mushrooms were extra. I needed to be extra. My Diet Coke came first. I got a refill towards the end of my meal. It took a while for my server to get me the refill, but it was okay. It didn't take long for my pork schnitzel to arrive. I was hungry and ready to dive in. The pork schnitzel was excellent. It had a light, crispy crust. The pork was juicy. It was practically effortless to cut through it with my knife. The spaetzle was perfect. I loved how the cute egg noodles were lightly butted. So good! I'm so glad that I got roasted mushrooms. They were yummy. They complimented the braised cabbage that was underneath the large slab of schnitzel. This meal was exactly what I needed and wanted. There were a couple of musicians performing while I was there. They were great. Sadly, I missed their names. I loved everything they covered, from "If I Had $1,000,000" by Barenaked Ladies, to "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot. It was a nice touch dining and soaking up their performance. I got my bill and paid with a credit card. All was well with my transaction, including tipping. I used the washroom before I left. A friend and I went to Bier Market on a Friday at 6pm. My first observation was that, despite may a dozen or so people seated on the patio, there were only a handful of tables inside that were being used - not very busy for a Friday. Our server recommended fish and chips, mentioning that the batter is crisp so I went with that. I asked what type of fish and she replied, cod. True to her word, it was nicely battered and not too greasy. I had fries with it, and they were light as well. Everything was tasty, including the pickled cabbage. Service was just right, coming back intermittently to see if we were happy. My only 'complaint', and it's mild given cost of food these days, is that it would have been nice to have bigger portions. read more

My boss and I went to this restaurant. It was pretty quiet on a Tuesday night. Onto the food and drinks. Food price was comparable to other restaurants of similar nature around downtown. My drink had so much ice in it that it pretty much watered down my drink and took almost 2 hours to fully melt. My fish and chips was satisfactory. Fries were decent and fish was prepared well. Not too soft or too oily. This kicker ruined my experience. My boss pointed to me that there's a mouse scurrying on the floor. And I saw it. We mentioned to the waitress and the manager came over saying that they have tried to fix this issue for a while but the food isn't affected. I hope she retakes her food safety course because vermin presence is an instant closure for any restaurant. read more

Could have been more flavourful in my opinion. Came back for patio drinks and had a great time. I had their sweet and sour flight and really enjoyed it! It was going to rain. I was starving. We could get a table inside. If all of these things are ever the case again, I still probably would t go back. They've got nice outdoor seating for people watching, but inside I just watched the dirty glasses pile up on the bar. Our server was friendly but slow. Food was slow, drinks were slow. I didn't get a knife with my dinner. I had to walk over to the hostess stand to ask for one. I got schnitzel. It's about impossible to cut with a fork. The schnitzel itself was good and the only reason they don't get a two star review. The sides were bland and the gravy had an off taste. My sons pizza, plain cheese, wasn't great either. Entree: Pork Schnitzel (CN$ 25.00). A large piece of pork resting on a bed of red cabbage and Spaetzle. The dish includes a small cup of gravy. A good, satisfying dish that is comparable to Schnitzel I've tasted in Germany. Recommended. Drink: Czechvar Plisner (CN$ 7.50). A tasty, crisp Pilsner from the Czech Republic. If that is not what you seek, they have a Bier Menu book that spans several pages offering many choices--plus, a full bar. Service: I sat at the Bar, so service prompt, friendly, and she was very helpful in explaining some items on the menu. Ambiance: A large "sports bar/restaurant" type place, with many tables, booths, and TVs in the bar area. It had a good vibe! Right in the main section of Ottawa was this fun place. First off, they have a HUGE selection of beers. They also have 4 mini samplers to order. It'll run about 14 cad. We also tried the bacon poutine which was devoured in about 5 minutes between the four of us. Very tasty. A bit expensive in general but not for the area. Overall, with tip, it was about 110 cad. I went here for a dinner on a Friday night. We got a table instantly which was great. It seemed pretty busy when we first went in. There is a lot of seating in the back of the restaurant as well. They have a variety of beers. I really like wheat beers but found their wheat beer selection kind of weak but maybe I didn't look hard enough. The prices of the beer and food was comparable to other places. We got fish and chips and a 5 item share board both to share. There was 2 big pieces of fish in the fish and chips which was nice to share. The fish was pretty good! On the board we got blue cheese, goat cheese, salmon (pretty good), and tuna poke (my fav thing on the board). The service was really courteous and friendly and also pretty quick. Bier Markt is a really good place if you are looking to grab some amazing beers and delicious food with a group of friends, or even take your parents out for a nice meal. The atmosphere is very cozy for a bar as the lighting makes it feel like you're in a classy restaurant. The tables and seats match very well with the overall theme of the establishment. In terms of their drink selection, their beer menu is very extensive with many domestic and international options to choose from. Bier Markt even provides recommendations in which dishes to eat with certain beers. If you can't decide which beer to try, i would definitely recommend trying one of their Beer Flights in order to sample the different flavours and textures of their beers. However, their food is unbelievable. It's a good mix between bistro and pub fare, mixing the best of both styles of food. The Dunkel Duck Wings were arguably one of the best things I have had in my life in terms of its juicy and tender meat, which perfectly compliments the provided dipping sauces. If you are looking for a change from chicken wings, I would definitely suggest these. The Candied Bacon Poutine was a nice balance between the classic poutine with candied bacon, in which let's be honest, sounds good regardless. Overall, Bier Markt is an amazing place if you are looking for some high end bistro cuisine, but with a good pint of beer just to wash all that food down. read more

We walked by and saw lots of empty tables but surprisingly were told 'they had no room on the patio'...strange, but ok - we sat inside Slick, trendy decor - but kind of a dark place for lunch. Has a clubby vibe to it and feels more like an evening spot. Music was so loud, the conversation was difficult. Pluses are extensive beer selections. They have a charcuterie bar but each choice is 6.00 so it works out quite expensive. Speaking of which, the entire menu is pricey with $17 to 20 for sandwiches. Came in on my lunch break. Excellent beer of course. I picked the Stiegl. Had the nachos. But they were wayyyy too over dressed. Half of the veg was jalapeños. This is one of those things where you could go with "less is more and more is less" I swear I never thought I would be one of these people that writes negative reviews. I like to be fair. More cheese and more beef would have been preferable to the massive helping of veg and salsa that I got. The tri coloured chips weren't that appealing to look at. To be honest I wasn't that hungry but I only ate half of a half serving when normally I would crush the whole thing. I hate wasting food but this was hard. Spontaneously decided to come here on Saturday night before heading to a Christmas party. We were seated right away. We took one of the few last available tables as the place was very busy. The noise level was quite high, the music was loud and people were talking over it, but it adds to the ambience I suppose? The waitress was quick to come see us, BF ordered a beer and I a passion fruit Swedish cider. I was very pleased with my choice! I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It wasn't as sweet as other ciders but had great flavour and was very refreshing. I noted down the name in hopes of finding it at the LCBO next time. For our dinner we ordered a small portion of the cheese fondue and a large portion of coconut curry mussels. The cheese fondue wasn't as great as we had expected, the little candle isn't sufficient to keep the cheese warm and melted, so it soon began to harden. But the combination with the lager and the pretzel was unique and tasty. The mussels really stole the show for us. The portion was really big and it tasted amazing! We were both very happy to have ordered both dishes and sharing it as our meal. The couple next to us even comment on how delicious and smart our choices were. I went here for lunch recently with my husband and some of his friends and I was disappointed :( I had the Vitagreens Salad ($13) and I added a salmon filet for an extra $6. For $19, I expected a big salad with fresh ingredients. What I got was a small salad with wilted greens. The Vitagreens Salad is baby kale, spinach, arugula and romaine hearts, with almonds and "quinoa croutons." My greens were wilted and all soft. The almonds were good though (not rancid), and the quinoa croutons were interesting. They are little balls of deep fried seasoned quinoa. They were tasty, but I only got 4 of them, and they were small (like the size of a regular crouton each). I liked the carrot and beet dressings though (the salad comes with 2 separate dressings - which I asked for on the side, both were very creamy and very colourful!) The salmon was nicely seasoned and cooked, but it was incredibly small. My husband had the Swiss Skillet (from their Brunch menu), which was 2 poached eggs, jalapeno and cheese sausage, on rosti potatoes ($13). It was served in an actual skillet, which was cool, but the portion size was again tiny. I didn't have any, but my husband said it was really greasy. One of our friends ordered some duck wings to share (6 wings for $14). I had one and it was good. The wings are deep fried and then they dry rub it with spices. The wings were spicy and had a Cajun kick to them. However, I don't feel that each wing was worth over $2 each. Everyone else at our table was drinking alcohol and I was not (I just had water). I felt that I received poorer service because I was not drinking. When someone else at the table had a glass that was nearing empty, the server promptly came by and asked if they wanted another drink. I sat there with my water glass empty and was not asked if I would like more water. After coming to our table 3 different times to ask about alcoholic drinks the server finally refilled my water on her fourth visit back to our table. I understand that you are running a business and want to make as much money as possible, but I ordered food, it wasn't like I didn't order anything and was just sitting there and drinking water :( The server was otherwise very pleasant though. Decor is nice. It's new and clean and not unlike other big chain pubs. Washrooms are clean. They have a huge beer selection, so this is the big draw I guess. Foodwise though, I was disappointed. I felt that the food was overpriced for what it is. I feel that I can get comparable food for much less elsewhere or pay the same amount and get much better food elsewhere. If you're a beer lover looking for a great patio experience, this is a great option right in the heart of Sparks Street. They have super comfy bright red booths with a good amount of privacy. The beer list is massive - a binder really, with dividers marking the different types of beer they serve. I'm not a beer drinker at all, but I was able to find some things that tickled my fancy. I ordered the Swedish margarita with Fruli, fresh mint and Swedish berries! It was delicious. Both my girlfriends ordered Somersby, and while they do have it on draft, we weren't able to get a pitcher. Where this place fell flat for me was on the food. Myself and the two ladies I was with all ordered the same thing - the CBA: chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich. The bun was tasty, but the chicken was overcooked and has a very strong coal taste, while the bacon was undercooked (I tried to give it to one of my dining partners since I don't eat bacon, but even she said it wasn't cooked well enough). The fries were tasty, but they were flimsy and a bit on the soggy side. They were served in these cute little cups though, and the dishes themselves were served on large pieces of wood which was very cool. My friend said her chicken sandwich was "okay," as was the service we had. The fries are good though. If I was hungrier, I would have gone for the brunch menu. Time for a follow up. It's been some time since I was here last so a check in is in order. As the name implies the beer choice is decent (I say this, despite the fact that the advertised seasonal IPA on their menu, "the left field imperial IPA" was not available) so I settled with another choice. The food, however, was a completely different story and completely off base from my first experience. The first three items I queried to the bartender, were all unavailable, sold out, not in stock... Insert excuse here. Covid, supply chain issues, it's a new year etc. OK so I chose a soup of the day and for eight dollars I got less than half a bowl of what was supposed to be a Thai red curry broth. Taste, wise, really disappointing quality and value for money even less so. Next I ordered 2 pounds of chicken wings for $31 and got less than I would expect in terms of flavour and quality again. I asked if I could have flats only....... Denied. They came with celery sticks (no carrots) and dip. They brought out 2 celery sticks with the 2 lbs of wings. I asked for more so a whopping 3 more celery sticks came out (which are really only half celery sticks). Yet I still tipped because Ii don't wanna be that guy and because the service was actually good. The restaurants choice to stifle quality and quantity is not the serving staffs fault but a horrible decision nonetheless. I don't think I'll go back because the three Brewers is right around the corner and they always seem to have everything fully stocked. Sorry bier market you're not what you used to be..... Very LOUD! just be ready, we all had to yell to talk to each other. Visiting Ottawa, and this is on Sparks Street, which is a nice pedestrian street. Shops on it are kind of crappy, but they have entertaining street performers. Waiter was nice, but very rushed. Explained he had two waiters missing from staff. They have three dollars for a slider so I had the cheeseburger. Not bad. Just a basic, kind of dry burger. Had the salmon with quinoa cakes and tried the curry chicken. Salmon was okay, but I didn't really like the cakes. Curry was good , it was a pretty simple meal served with rice and peas. Couple next to me did not like their penne pasta, I forget what the meal was called. Overall just an average eatery, nothing good or delicious really stood out in my mind. read more

We ate here last week after a long working day. We arrived at 7pm, and our group of 7 was seated within 2 minutes. The beer menu was pretty impressive. The selection of flights - collections of 6x 7oz glasses of various beers in a theme was expansive. I ordered a flight of mostly blondes, and was not disappointed. The food menu was limited but good. Its all german pub food, and a lot of the items are designed for sharing. I had the pork schnitzel, which came with gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, and shredded cabbage. The german fellow with us said it was decent German food. It tasted good going down, and it stayed down when I worked out later that evening, so it meets my seal of approval. read more

Not as big of a beer selection as I would expect from a place with the peeing guy statue in the entrance. An international symbol of Belgium at the door makes you expect to be blown away by a list of golden, dark, wheat or white selection of beers. Well that doesn't happen. I can easily name several places with a wider range of the golden liquid. Food is ok. Portions are quite small if you ask me, and the quality is just ok. Big tvs wherever you look, ideal environment to watch any sport. Not my favourite place, but not a bad one either. read more

They had a good rotating beer selection as their name is bier markt! I also liked that their patio space. The dishes were okay, but nothing special. Maybe because of the location, it was a little pricy. read more

Great patio and atmosphere. Great selection of beers. Pretzels are some of the best I've had.
