First off ignore the bad reviews. I think everyone that left a bad review has some serious entitlement problems and either a) they take their customer service too seriously or b) they have never worked retail. Before you come to this store, know that they have a high turn over rate. Don't expect to see the same person working there, because of this don't expect their employees to know everything. There's always someone new when I go there, and I never see the same person working there twice. This, lack of training means. I don't expect a "Hello" from someone who is probably working their first job out of high school or college, they will eventually develop those skills as time passes. I don't expect them to have the items listed, that's why I go to the store to check. Thieves exist, that is not the newly trained employee's fault if it was listed in their computer system but it is not there when you arrive. Yeah, you can ask them to check for you, but will they do it right? Probably not. I don't expect them to give me the price listed if it was misplaced by a newly trained team member. Maybe at Walgreens yes, but not at a Big 5. Their stuff is not a few bucks corporate is willing to lose. Expect fair customer service, but not extraordinary customer service. Everyone is super chill and nice here, yes it is not your typical store. Its mostly kids working the floor with adults managing the store. I also want to add, theft affects morale. It doesn't make employees happy to show up to work and to be constantly hit with theft. Maybe their attitudes change throughout the day due to something that happened. The store is on an area where theft is a real problem. Imagine catching someone stealing from your store, and they just laugh at your face because they know you can't stop them. read more

I came in a few days ago to buy some equipment located all the way in the back of the store. I spent a while trying to figure out what items to get, so we were in the same spot for about 15 minutes. During that entire time, an employee, a lady with glasses and short hair, stayed near us and seemed to be pretending to organize things while repeatedly staring at us. Mind you, She only came over after we did. I'm not sure if we were being racially profiled or if she assumed we were going to steal, but it made me feel highly uncomfortable. They do not deserve your money. One of my family members walked in with his work clothes on wanting to buy some shoes and one of the female employees discriminated against him. Saying that they don't serve homeless people because he had grease on his work clothes (he just got off of work) like hello? Finally got my tennis basket I finally got a new tennis basket for my tennis balls! I do remember buying my tennis racquet from here. The staff, Victoria was super friendly and welcoming. They even saved one of the baskets for me in the front as I have called in 10 minutes prior. I'm definitely coming back to this location soon! read more

B5 is a SoCal-based chain of sporting goods stores that has locations in almost all the western states from Texas on. B5 was started in 1955 in El Segundo, and their name actually derives from the chains first five Army-Navy Surplus stores, and *not* a sports reference as I had always thought. I swung-by earlier today to see if I could find a pair of hiking boots for my son, and to check out their new digs. Here's the scoop: Parking- Plenty of spots inside their private lot that they share with the rest of the center. Hours: M-F 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sat 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sun 9:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Selection- B5 has pretty much everything you could need for almost any sport you can imagine. While it's not as large of a selection as some of the other larger sporting good stores (which rhymes with Sports Authority) they do manage to fit quite a bit of stuff into such a tiny space; think "organized chaos." Interior- As I said, the interior is jam packed with stuff, but since this one is brand-new it was way more organized than the one I frequent on Blossom Hill Rd. On a totally random side note, they had great music selection--they were rocking "Mr Blue Sky," by ELO! =D Value- B5 has always had terrific prices, and you should definitely keep an eye on their weekly sales, and check their website for coupons. I need to buy some ammunition for an upcoming event, and went to Big-5. Honestly, they were not my first choice, but after having a horrendous experience elsewhere, I thought I would give the store a try. I'm glad I did! There were no lines to get into the store so I walked right in. This was great. I went to the ammunition counter and saw that there was no one there so I asked the front desk if I could get some help, and Daniel, a manager, was with me in under 20 seconds. I went through my list of things I needed to buy, and one-by-one, we found them all. Daniel had assembled a collection of everything I needed. Daniel collected up my personal information so that we could do the Ammunition purchase, which took about five minutes. Daniel was very pleasant and had a great attitude. It was a pleasure to be a customer in that store. In summary, no waiting in line here; get what you need quickly; get treated with respect; and a great shopping experience. It might not have the greatest selection in the world, but they were very very helpful. I recommend this place. read more

So far this place is bad. Customer Service is terrible. We walk to the back and ask for a size. He comes back with 3 boxes. We asked for a 9.5 Womens size ended giving us a box that had two different shoe sizes. Doesn't make eye contact drops them down and says "here you go" and continues to walk away. The guy was wearing a blue shirt and had glasses. I don't even know his name. My mom wanted to change the size to a 9. So we literally had to yell out "EXCUSE ME?" He comes from a different aisle and says "Whats up?" WHAT?! "Whats up?" Are you serious? That is NOT how you speak to a customer! TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE. I called this location looking for an exercise hula hoop, NOT the kind manufactured by wham-o. The sales associate Vickie tells me they have some that retail approx 40.00. I go to the store on my lunch and she directs me to the back wall with hula hoops made by wham-o for 19.99! They don't even carry the one she referenced over the phone for 40.00! First of all this Place looks like either it's not open or it's going out of business and judging by the poor customer service I can see why. The store lights are dimmed so low that from outside it's looks like it's closed. Me & my wife shopped there on November 9th 2020 an we spent over $400.00 dollars there that night. Your store manager daniel was not only rude to us, but other customers as well. Not only does he have terrible customer service, he has a bad attitude towards customers, that we experienced first hand, and he should be FIRED !!!!! I give 2 stars because they are close to my house and had the item I was looking for. I won't give more than that because their customer service is lacking. There were 4 employees up front, only received a hello and went back to their conversation not offering assistance. I had to come back to ask for the tennis are after wondering around and the guy I asked told me "go ask the guy in the white shirt" who was already with a customer. The guy in shoes was helpful. Was trying to buy a shotgun but the lady said they couldn't sell it because they haven't learned some new system. So they have what I want but unable to sell due to being incompetent of operating new system they should know. They told me I should check other stores to buy it. It is on sale right now. This was the closest store near me. They have the item I want for sale but unable to sell it. Unheard of. Horribly managed store. This place needs new management or a change. Had to travel all the way to Milpitas to buy a shotgun which was a displayed shotgun. And this Monterey location had a brand new boxed shotgun that they could sell but was unable to. Went there last last week and bought 5 items for a snow boarding trip. Didn't use one of them so I went back today to return the item. No one was at the register for about 5 minutes when I asked for help the guy said it would be a couple of minutes. After patiently waiting for about 10 minutes I asked again for help and he said it would be another 20 minutes. The worst part is he wasn't helping anyone the entire time. People who don't want to be working shouldn't be hired for a job that need to provide good customer service. They should be trained on working on better customer service And for the exercise equipment if customers want to just try it out they shouldn't be told rudely to get off.
