Big 5 stores are pretty much the same except for cleanliness and friendliness. The Tehachapi store excels in both catergories.

I've been here many times and every time I have received wonderful customer and have always been greeted by friendly smiles.

I shop here all the time. The store is full of good quality items, and you can always find a deal, especially with a 10% off coupon, that you can get in your email. I bought a $75, 6000 lumens rechargeable flashlight, and when I got home with it, I was unable to charge it due to a damaged charger port. I returned to the store and spoke with Troy, the manager. Troy was so cool. He went right to the display and picked out a new one to replace my defective light. He opened the new light just to be certain that that it had a good charger port, and it was perfect. I had my receipt with me and offered to show it to him, and he said, "No worries" and said he was sorry that I had to drive all the way back to the store to exchange it. I have never had such a good experience returning something. This is how to treat people. This experience only solidified my commitment to being a loyal customer. read more

The previous manager was excellent. The current manager is very good, along with a good older fellow who'se been there awhile, one young man seeming be learning the ropes. However, we currently can't say much about the rest. When we've browsed, and this is supported by friends who've shared their visits, rarely are we greeted, and we could wander the store and rarely get anyone asking how we're doing. And when we are in a department, finally asking for help, they often appeared annoyed. To us, it seems that Big 5 doesn't have much of a training program regarding customer relations. And shoes sizes, more so with sale items, are very difficult to find. **We now only go when we know specifically what we're looking for. Otherwise it's another store. read more

This review is regarding one of the employees that helped me with a particular item I was looking for I am not from there so I asked her once I confirmed it was the item I was looking for asked to put it on hold for me she went that extra step her name is Maria helped me once I got there she rung me up as she was ringing me up she asked someone else a simple question to make sure she was doing it her job correctly when the other employee answered her back so rudely I have worked retail before and that type of behavior isn't really a team player! Everyone is so kind here. The staff is really helpful in answering your questions as well. Moving to a new town and experiencing this service has kept me coming back. From small items like weight lifting gloves to larger items like a boxing bag and stand each trip has been enjoyable and fun to explore. I like the store and sales, but it seems that they often don't have a good selection of sizes for the sale shoes. Also, not the best quality for knives and gear, but it's better than our other choice, Kmart, and I'm happy to have Big 5 in our town. The employees seem friendly enough, and I feel welcome there, but they don't seem very knowledgeable or energetic. read more

My grandsons wanted a speed bag. I bought one at the Tehachapi Big Five store. Within one hour after my husband blew the bag up,my 12 year old grandson broke it. Don't bother to buy the speed bag there unless you don't mind throwing your money away. It is just about as good as a balloon. You can buy a balloon at the Dollar Tree for one dollar plus tax. read more

Big 5 of Tehachapi may be the better of Big 5s. The staff are respectable and thoughtful. If you need help, they're there. If you're just looking, they leave you to your shopping. I find management thoughtful and ready to answer any questions. The one thing that keeps me from 5 stars is their cycle section. They have so little. In an age where exercise and cycling are becoming more and more mainstream with bike paths appearing more, one would think a wider range of cycles, with more high end (road and mountain bikes along with components and support products) supplies would meet the demands. Eventually, if they could, to even have a bicycle mechanic on hand (even one who does mainly tune-ups and some main component changes (i.e. derailleurs and brakes)). Something to think about. **We understand Big 5 is going to do the same for all stores in general, but some changes at one store would meet the needs of that community and would allow them to see if one change at one store works, it might work at others. How often do we see companies eventually downsize because they don't take chances on changes to keep up with the times. K-mart anyone? read more

I went in trying to buy a new scope for my .22 I started talking to the manager, who's name was Sean, and he kept giving me the wrong scope and wasn't even listening to what I was saying which was pretty simple "hey I need a new scope for my .22" but now he kept giving me scope rings or pulling down a .22 he then started to just ignore what I was saying and started talking about his garage band and how "cool" they were and how well he could play "Free Bird" I tried just walking away and he then followed me and kept at it, he finally got called to the front so i decided to go get a pair of shoes while I was there at least, I was greeted by a kid named Andrew who I asked 6 times for a shoe size before he grabbed the shoe went into the back and didn't come out for an HOUR!! he had no shoes in his hand and simply ignored me and walked out of the store. DO NOT GO HERE. I have never had such terrible service in my life read more
