Very Disappointing Experience at Big 8 Tire (Ely, NV) Big 8 Tire might be the only tire shop in town, but that doesn't mean they treat customers well. When I stopped in, the staff seemed more interested in working on their 4-wheeler and dirt bike than helping anyone who came in for service. After finally getting someone's attention, I was quoted an unreasonably high price for a simple job -- way more than what it should have cost. Between the lack of professionalism, poor customer service, and the attempt to overcharge, I decided to walk away and take my business elsewhere. Excellent customer service! I drove into Ely while on a long trip and suddenly had a screeching noise coming from one of my wheels. Within 20 minutes the technician resolved the problem at no charge! It was late in the day, however Big 8 was open and they immediately waved me in to their garage, lifted my vehicle up and asked if I'd been driving any unpaved roads. I thought it was a brake pad, but sure enough I had just driven scores of miles on unpaved highway. The technician removed and cleaned debris from each wheel until finding and removing a rock scraping the rotor on the fourth wheel. They've got a great group of guys working there! I couldn't be more pleased and grateful for their speedy help!!! read more

RIP OFF. The only good thing I have to say is theat, initially, they came out to put on my spare when one of my 5th wheel (42' tri axle Momentum) blew out. That was the extent of their knowledge, switching tires!! They offered to sell, mount and install a new tire, I hate to tow this beast w/o a good spare so I agreed. VERY Pricey, $708.00 for the call out and a year old tire. Then we discovered my hydraulics were torn out by the blown tire. What they should have done was say, 'This is out of our skill set'. But they alleged to know what they were doing. Tied up my jacks, which would not retract due to loss of hydraulics, damaging seals in front jacks by forcing them up with a floor jack, after I asked if that would work. When working on my trailer there were repeated promises regarding, 'I need to go to my shop, see you in an hour', or I'll be back tomorrow morning. Would not return for hours, or the next morning (only after multiple calls to the business). Finally, sent out a new 'tech' who arrived and crawled under the unit without announcing himself. I came out after hearing banging under the coach. He said, "I'm here to manually retract your slides", as he was cranking away with a 3/4 inch socket, "but I dont think this is working!". I pointed out he was lowering my spare tire/carrier. He crawled out from under my 5th wheel, said the only honest thing I heard from this company, "I don't think I know how to do this!", and left. I fortunately contacted NORTHEASTERN Tire, in Ely, who were very competent, knowledgeable, and when they came out, stayed until they had me on the road (4 hours) at less cost than Big 8 for their service. All jacks up and strapped, slides in and strapped, and their Tech did this while missing his 5 yr old son's birthday party on a Saturday. read more

This is absolutely the best tire service I have ever had & would recommend them to anyone. We pulled in around 4 pm with a truck & 5th wheel RV. Within 4 minutes of arrival we had 3 employees come to work on the tire. One employee took the flat tire & rim to replace with a new tire. Two other employees jacked up the trailer, took the spare off & reinstalled the spare underneath the trailer. While I was paying the bill, they put the new tire on. When I came out they were torquing it to spec. We were out of there around 4.20 pm. They all shook my hand & wished me the best of luck on our trip home. The highway service racket provides Ely with some of its lucre, and like many such speed trap towns, there is quite a bit of dishonest operation. Big 8's name, an obvious play on Big O, is indicative of their shady practices. They will not honour open warranties for replacement service, either out of willful obtuseness or feckless bewilderment. Either way, best to not use them and their shakily qualified technicians. read more

Woke up this morning to a flat on my Class C RV. Got to Big 8 and these guys were amazing. Got a good lesson on tires from them (also don't use valve extensions). Seems mine were 7yrs old still had plenty of thread on them but sidewalls were cracking. Decided on his advice and replaced all 6 tires. On the road in less than 2 hours. read more

We rented an RV thru RVShare this last week and encountered TWO separate blow outs within 3 days. Big 8 Tire was about an hour away from us, and definitely helped us get out of a major bind. Explained to the RV guy we were renting from, that he had a spare that was 7 years old and 2 sizes too big, causing the second blow out and us needing to have ALL the tires replaced that day for safety reasons. Without them, it would have been a whole lot more of a headache getting home. The owner Mike is definitely a stand up, no nonsense man. And all the techs were knowledgeable. I've been to Big 8 Tire twice since the new ownership took over. Both times I have been treated unfairly. Please continue reading. The first time I stopped in, I asked if they would be able to mount 4 ATV tires onto the rim. The attendant said he would get on it immediately. After about 2 hours sitting in their lobby, an employee informed me that it would still be a "while". Quite surprised after being told they'd get right on it... I left to get some lunch. After returning, I waited for another 2 hours approximately. Not once did anyone apologize to me for the long wait, nor did they seem concerned that I waited for over 4 hours. When paying for the service, they tried charging me full price - which I respectfully asked them to reconsider. They ended up knocking 20% off, but no apology. I was hesitant to return to Big 8 Tire after my first experience. But I figured, you know, maybe they were having a bad day, and I wanted to give them another chance. Fast forward about 3 weeks. I call in around 12pm and ask if they had time to stud, mount and balance 4 snow tires on my wife's SUV. The employee kindly said they would be able to get it done - no problem! Perfect. I arrived 30 minutes later, explaining to them that they didn't have to rush and I would return later to pay and pick the vehicle up. Three hours later I stopped by and noticed the vehicle still hadn't been touched. At this time there was only one employee. I asked him if I could pay the bill, and explained I had something I needed to do. We both agreed that he was to leave the keys in the vehicle. I paid the bill and went on my way. Later that night when my ride dropped me off, the vehicle was locked. Great! (It's a Saturday, they're closed on Sundays) I made a social media post through our town's largest group page. I was put into touch with the owners son. He explained that someone would be there first thing in the morning to unlock the vehicle, and he apologized. I drive into town (yes, I live outside of town, making this even more inconvenient) Sunday morning around 9am. Car is still locked. I messaged the owners son that this was beginning to really irritate me and explained to him that we have children and needed our vehicle! Around 11am I finally get a response that he would "unlock the vehicle when my ticket was paid". Excuse me!? I immediately sent him a picture of my receipt and demanded that my vehicle be returned to me immediately. He apologized and quickly unlocked the vehicle. I made another trip into town and I FINALLY had my vehicle. Relieved, I reached out to the son and gave him my phone number. I explained to him that I understand mistakes can be made, and I needed to speak with his father. It's been about three weeks since this last incident, and I have yet to receive an apology from the owner or any of Big 8 Tire's employees. I was charged the full $160, with me, their customer, left to suffer the hardship from THEIR mistake. This is a small town. This type of business practice can make or break you. I feel I have given plenty of time, and showed plenty of understanding before making this review. I will never refer anyone to this business, and I will make sure everyone that has tire needs - hears this story. read more

I had a tire shred on my 5th wheel and when I had that changed on the road the spare flew off. By the time I got to them,I was a total wreck. The worst possible place to go to in town, crooked business from beginning to end. Price gouging to the extreme. I told my wife to take my truck to get an oil change while I was at work, she took it to big 8 who treated her like an idiot, I told her a regular oil change. Well these fine people told her that a synthetic oil change is normal for this truck, maybe my owner's manual is wrong ummm not. Well not only did they lie to my wife they charged her 120 for 1 oil change. Safe to say I will never go there again. Do yourself a favor and go to HLC TIRE in Lund. read more

Really helped me out! Was on a business trip and started hearing a grinding noise from the front driver's side wheel well. Called multiple shops in town and no one would take a look at it same-day. While on a road trip my tire sensor light started blinking again. I'd had the tire fixed earlier that morning (slow leak) but when I checked the pressure, it seemed like it had too much air. A really nice young man checked my pressure on all my tires, agreed the newly fixed tire had way too much air in it, and made sure the other 3 were where they should be. Super nice to talk to, wouldn't accept any payment, and we went on our way. Nice to know there are still nice people who want to help a senior! read more

I had a couple of tires go bad out in the wilderness. They ripped me off and took advantage of someone in trouble. Sold me a set of 4 tires for a total of $1,350.00. The normal cost per tire is $130 each. They are a rip off and took big advantage. I would expect to pay more because of where they are located, but this was out of control. So if you are a traveler be prepared to be ripped off! They also will tack on 4% to cover credit card charges so I hope you are carrying cash if you need a tire. read more

I took my car to big 8 to get some new tires after another tire place had some delays in receiving mine. I have never heard anything good about big 8 but I was leaving on a trip the next day so I needed to get taken care of. They called and said that one lug was cross threaded and that the stud broke when they took it off but said everything else came off fine. I went to pick up my car and was told that another one was suddenly cross threaded. So at that point I was pretty sure that they were breaking them off using an impact to install the lugs. They then told me they would call the next day to give me a quote to fix it. When they still hadn't call by 10 the next day I decided I was just going to take care of it myself. When I was pulling off one of the tires I found they were all way over torqued and that they cross threaded one putting it on. Which then snapped another lug. So if you like replacing studs because people don't know how to start by hand threading or use a torque wrench this is the perfect place for you. read more

I've been to this tire shop multiple times, previous and current owners, with a flat because for some reason we always seem to get one when we are on trips. We've always paid about $40. I was charged $70 for a USED tire is absolutely taking advantage of people. I have also had a previous trip where my children and I sat in the car packed to head home las vegas for at least an hour as these slobs meandered around their shop not even trying to LOOK busy!! read more

We just had a great experience at Ely's Big 8 Tire. We brought in our 16" Scamp Trailer which had one bad tire. Turns out the radial belt had split and we were probably a few miles from a blow out. Jeff immediately replaced both tires without unhooking the trailer, and we were back on the road in 30 minutes. As a precaution, Jeff checked and refilled our spare tire. Jeff was friendly, fast, and professional throughout. read more

The product itself was good, and the people that worked for the business were a one star.A horrible experience with this business just doesn't begin to describe it. They took advantange of a situtation that could have easily been a customer building experience, but decided to take money from me because they simply could. I do not recommend these people at any cost, and I will be sending a letter to the state attorney general because of their business practices. I had called in with a tire emergency, and was 50 miles away, I chose a risk to drive in rather than wait for them, and made it five minutes before closing after changing my blow out in the desert. CROOKS, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! We pulled into Ely on a Friday morning on a 7 day vacation to Idaho, after driving in from Las Vegas, NV. It took David only a few minutes for them to diagnose the problem, Mike the owner said he would PERSONALLY order the parts for our car. Saturday morning we called as we were instructed to do, they LIED and stated Napa auto parts screwed up the order. We called Napa and were told the parts were NEVER ORDERED by Mike. We were then told it would now be Monday before we could get our car fixed and an additional $250.00. The owner Mike told us every time we called he would bill us another $100.00 which is illegal! We paid 3 nights at a hotel, food, etc. and had to pay for our hotel we had reserved in Idaho. On Monday we had to have the Sheriff help us get our vehicle back, they billed us $1500.00 vs. the $750,00 we were quoted. Our Visa card refused the additional cost because we were able to prove 3 other places would have charged less than $750.00. They took 4 of our 7 vacation days and could care less about our plight! Mike and his crew are not to be trusted if you are in a jam and need help go to Gale oil and Tire or any place other than Big 8 Tire!! read more

The new owner, Mike, re-opened after taking over and doing some refurbishing work. We were traveling Ely in Ely on our way west, and needed tire rotation. After talking to a couple of locals, came here. He was very busy but had an empty bay so worked us in. We were done in less than an hour and on our way. I drove to Ely from Reno where I live to pick up my Gramdma for a doctor's apt. I left my car at her house and we drove her car back to to my house. I did not check the fluid levels before we left because she had the oil changed here two weeks before our trip. On our way to Reno I went to use the windshied wipers and their was no washer fluid. When we arrived at my house I asked my husband to add washer fluid to the container. He attempted to do so and it all leaked out on the ground. He figured out that the bottle had been disconnected, so that the fluid would not stay in the container. He re-connected it and filled it. Far worse, was that there was no engine coolant!! We had just driven three hundred and twenty miles with either very little or no engine coolant!!! My Husband filled the coolant container and it was all absorbed into the engine. he filled the container again & the oil was almost completely absorbed again. It probably goes without saying that my grandma will not be back. It is UNCONSCIONABLE to leave an eldely woman without engine coolant, or anyone for that matter!!!!! My husband said the washer fluid bottle's are approx. $100.00 to replace!!! Of course no on one knows how the washer fluid bottle became, "disconnected", & the engine coolant?
