I was driving from Orono, Maine to Fresno, CA without stopping -- and Geez Louise was I tired -- when I heard a funny scraping, thudding sound that kind of went like, "Whump-a-whump-a-whump-a-whump-a-whump." And I thought, "Well, poop on a popsicle stick, if that doesn't sound like a FLAT TIRE." I was in the middle of pure desert, desert as far as the eye could see, the kind of desert where you'd expect to see a camel come out of a mirage. I had maybe a hundred miles to go before any trace of civilization, and that civilization had been a Taco Bell (See another yelp review of mine).... Anyway, I digress. I was worried sick. I had to get out and walk for near close to 8 miles, and by the time I got into Ely, I swear there were vultures circling overhead. Then, without much strength left, parched and delirious, hallucinating, I saw -- shimmering on the horizon like a beautiful oasis -- "BIG 8 TIRE!" I was saved. I don't think Mary or Joseph were as happy to see the Magi coming with their gold and frankincense (and myrrh, but who really cares about myrrh?) In any case, Big 8 Tire replaced my tire for a reasonable cost -- and had a vending machine with Dasani and other beverages. I would highly recommend them to anyone; but then again, I was fairly dehydrated and don't remember everything all that well after that. Thank you Big 8 Tire! Thought I'd give Big 8 a try since my last visit in 2019 under different owners. Should be called Big Mistake. One employee working, no other customers. I dropped off a tire that was leaking, went to an appointment and then wanted my tires rotated and balanced. Employee only wanted to balance the tires he took off the rear. I had to convince him that I wanted all of them balanced. He balanced three of them and then told me to take it for a drive and come back if I wanted the fourth balanced. What a lazy piece of poo! He could have just balanced the fourth and be done in ten minutes. Instead, he told me to take a ride and come back to see if it rode better. On top of that, he said he couldn't find a leak in my first tire. Well, when I got it home to Eureka an hour and a half later, it only had 25psi when it should have 80psi. Again, a lazy piece of poo that would rather complain and curse about his personal life than do what a customer asks for. $60 to rotate and balance three tires is a fair price but not when it's an incomplete job. read more

These folks are life savers. We suffered two simultaneous punctures 60 miles from Ely and 30 miles deep into the sage scrub. One flat was manageable; two was crippling. I won't cite prices because times change, but The Big 8 folks patched one tire and offered a discount tire for less than the price of a low-effort pizza date. They could have taken advantage of us but they chose the higher road and were instrumental in getting my family get out of peril and back on the road. Given my initial experience, I was happy to return the next day for the replacement of our patched and mismatched tires (we were 300 miles from home and not about to take any more chances). They recognized me and cut me a fair deal for my return patronage. I was taken care of 100% of the way in a significant time of need. What more could you ask for in a business? read more

We had an accident & our Explorer's transmission was totaled just outside of Ely, Nevada. We were recommended to have it towed to Big 8. The next morning, the owner Mike, spent considerable time with us diagnosing the vehicle and providing recommendations. We elected not to have the major repair accomplished by Big 8 Tire because it would have been a week before we got our car back due to having to order a replacement transmission. Mike was able to repair a couple of items, a battery & alternator belt, In addition, the entire team manually loaded our vehicle by pushing the disabled Explorer up the u-haul trailer ramp. All of this support and he only charged us $40 for labor! If you ever have car problems near Ely, you will never go wrong by going to Big 8 Tire & Auto. read more

Had a flat tire on a gravel road. The Big 8 crew was great at fixing it right away! But then it was noticed my wheel had been damaged on the gravel road and actually had a dent that leaked air. They said they could order a new rim for my Subaru Crosstrek but it would be lots cheaper if I just ordered one from a Subaru dealer myself and had it sent to them. So I overnighted a new wheel from the Vegas Subaru to Big 8. The next day Big 8 mounted it for no charge and I was on my way. They were so helpful. I tried paying them for mounting the wheel but they wouldn't take my money. Even gave me a good tip on where I could camp near town while waiting for the new wheel. They were great!! read more

Holy Smokes... And I mean smokes! I walked through the door and was knocked over by cigarette smoke. As a former smoker I really try not to be a hypocrite but there is a line that you just don't cross. This "showroom" if you want to call it that, is small and very dirty so the cigarette smoke just adds to the ambiance! The owner and one other employee were cursing and smoking without caring whether there were customers in the shop or not. In fact, there was a customer smoking with them.... If you can't wait and absolutely have to buy a tire from them wear an oxygen mask and leave the kids at home. read more

Big 8 Tire was our saving grace. We stopped there to get a tire because we had had a blow on Highway 50. When we pulled in Mike the owner noticed that we had a broken bearing on our shackle, which we were not even aware of. We truly believe that we would have been broken down again only this time with a broken undercarriage. However, within two hours they had it fixed and we were back on our way. GO TO GALE OIL AND TIRE. Came here to see if we could get our tire patched. They patched it for 30 bucks and proceeded to tell us it wasn't going to last and that they didn't have a tire for us. So we went to Gale Oil and Tire... and they were SHOCKED that they would patch something that was clearly dangerous to drive on. Also, Gale Tire and Oil charges 17 bucks for a patch. We ended up getting a new tire, and were presented with stellar service at Gale Oil and Tire. read more

This place is outstanding. we had no sooner parked in our hotel parking when we realized our front passenger side tire was flat with a blown valve. Husband Sam showed up early showed up the next morning. They were friendly professional fixed our tire in no time and got us on our way , a several thousand mile trip. Can't thank them enough. My eighty year old mother brought her vehicle in for repairs. Not only did they find the problem and repair it but they wouldn't charge her a dime. Then, while leaving, she noticed her tire was low. They took the tire off, completely checked it out and put it back on the vehicle, again, for no charge. She was thrilled and wanted me to write a review for her. I blew a tire out at Great Basin National Park, didn't have a spare. Thought for sure I would be waiting for tires to be shipped out but they had a set for my vehicle as they hold a huge stock just for this purpose. Great service, super nice guys. Great experience all around. read more
