For four years (Aug 2014 to Sep 2018), I cared for a family member's turtle, a red-eared slider. I…read morenever had a reptile before and learning how to care for the turtle took time and research. I realized that I needed help from an aquatics expert, so in September 2015, I searched online and found EverClear Aquatics. For two years, EverClear Aquatics came to my home and cleaned the turtle's aquarium and water filter on a regular schedule. It was the best decision I made and the turtle loved it! They were so helpful, allowing me to enjoy the turtle and not have to worry about cleaning his home. I went through two different canister filters that did not work properly, but EverClear Aquatics came to my rescue when the filter was not working properly. They later recommended a good canister filter to purchase, which I did. It was the best choice I made in a water filter, making my life a lot easier. When I told EverClear Aquatics that I wanted to get a specific piece of equipment, they also recommended one for me and ordered and installed it. EverClear Aquatics is great in so many ways. They are professional, hardworking, reliable, trustworthy, patient, and very good with both people and aquarium life. They are also good in communicating with clients. For example, when scheduling appointments, they often provided me with various possible dates. They also confirmed appointments and always let me know in advance if they had any schedule changes. Eventually, after a couple of years, I asked EverClear Aquatics to teach me how to clean the aquarium and water filter and do water changes myself. They educated me on what to do and spent time answering my questions. They also provided me with various supplies for the water filter, so I didn't have to order them myself. When it came time for me to return the turtle to my family member, EverClear Aquatics did something amazing. They came to my home, dismantled the turtle's aquarium and water filter, took the equipment in their car to the new home, and installed them. I was expecting to receive an invoice, but they did all of this for me free of charge. They also sent me a photo of the turtle in his new home because they knew how much I loved him and wanted him to be happy. It was an incredible gift I did not expect at all. I would highly recommend EverClear Aquatics. They are simply the best.

Since EverClear Aquatics has been maintaining our tank, it's crystal clear water with maintenance only once a month. They even put our small tank on their route even though they normally deal with larger tanks. Can't thank Chris and his team enough. The most professional and absolutely know their fish and tanks!

He has some hard to get species and breeds an number of exotic plecos. I was so excited to see baby zebra plecos (which have become one of my favourite fresh water fish), that I ended spending almost $400 in one stop. Chris also carries a variety of specialty foods and filter materials. I can see myself visiting this place a few times a year. Highly recommend.

It's…read morenot a shop you wander through on a Saturday afternoon to browse your basic tetras, but if you want something specific, unusual, or rare, Chris is your guy. When I set up my first aquarium, a more experienced friend cautioned me against the dangers of developing fish elitism, the gradual but inescapable attraction to increasingly rare species. At the time, I laughed and blew him off, convinced I would never catch that bug. The platies and guppies I had picked out from PetSmart were more than good enough for me - I couldn't imagine going out of my way to deliberately seek out more obscure fish. My friend was right, of course. Less than a year after setting up my plebian little platy tank, I was scrutinizing the stock at Big Al's, grumbling that what they had labeled as corydoras julii were *obviously* just the more common corydoras trilineatus, and lamenting the fact that none of the local fish stores seemed to be interested in stocking anything *interesting*. Chris, who runs Next Gen Aquatics, stocks *interesting* fish - interesting, unusual, wonderfully obscure fish. I had been looking for some corydoras hastatus for months to add to my boraras brigittae tank (the platies and guppies having long since been given away to less demanding relatives), but hadn't been able to either find any for sale, or to convince any local stores to stock them. After one text to Chris and a couple of weeks of waiting for import and quarantine, I was able to pick up a full bag of perky, healthy, adorable little tailspot cories, at a very reasonable price. NGA is still a very small business: visits are by appointment only, and the selection is limited by the space available. But the setup is meticulous, all of the fish are healthy (and huge!), and Chris himself is enthusiastic and knowledgeable and quick to respond to inquiries or requests. If, like me, you find yourself wandering discontented through the aisles of your local fish store every week wondering why they never stock any plecos other than bristlenose, or if - like me - you spend hours browsing through species listings on Seriously Fish, fall in love with some obscure little corydoras, then realize nobody local actually carries them... drop Chris a line, and see what he can do for you.

**Based on memory, not a recent visit**…read more This place is a pillar of my childhood. I used to take public transit and walk escorted as a wee child uphill both ways, yes, literally; in the blazing summer heat and in the dead of winter just to get here. I'd sing "The Ants Go Marching" on the way, out loud, and I loved every step of that mission. The store came up in a conversation recently and suddenly--boom--my whole childhood flashed before my eyes. A few days later I happened to drive by. I didn't go in this time, but just seeing it still standing after all these years gave me chills. It used to be a wonderland of fish tanks... walls of fish... and if memory serves, maybe there were bunnies or ferrets at one point too (I might be wrong on that, but hey, memories blur). Knowing it's still there means I have a chance to walk in again one day and revisit that magical space with grown-up eyes. If you're in the area, especially if you've got kids or a love of aquatic life, maybe go check it out and keep the spirit alive. Here's to places that stay standing, even when the years rush by. I'm 40+ now, and this little shop is part of what built me.

My recent visit to this Big Al's Aquarium was my second time in my lifetime. My usual Big Al's…read morelocation that I frequent is in Thornhill, on my way home from work. It's interesting that I never wrote a review for this Scarborough location. Perhaps I didn't know how to react to my experience walking from the parking lot over to the store the first time I was here. A woman with her army of children were taking up the entire sidewalk as they walked to their minivan and there wasn't any room for me to walk. I politely said excuse me and she yelled at me as if I were one of her kids. And, yes, she was yelling at them along the way. She was obviously having a bad day. I was in the area last Sunday and decided to stop by. My betta fish likes lounging on a leaf hammock that suctions to his aquarium. A week ago, this leaf broke and I needed a replacement. Since he lost his lounging area, he has resorted to hiding behind larger rocks at the bottom of his home. Parking is limited at this store. I actually parked in front of Blinds To Go. Even though there were signs that said that it was for Blinds To Go customers, I decided to break this guideline and park. Seriously, this store wasn't busy. How often do you buy blinds?! I had a different family experience last Sunday. A woman was coming out of the store and calling her daughter to roll their cart out. Her husband went to fetch her. There was a couple ahead of me. The man held the door open for the girl to roll her cart out. Her mom thanked the man. We all went into the store after the coast was clear. I like that the betta accessories are pretty much in your face when you first walk in. I found a new leaf hammock for my pet fish. The leaf is larger. There were also aquarium accessories on sale. There was Popeye, for instance. I managed to text my boyfriend at the store and said that his bicep was bigger than Popeye's. He laughed. There was one guinea pig who looked so sweet and adorable. I don't know if it was male or female, but a bunny kept it company. I also liked looking at birds next door. Big Al's has a rewards program. What I found out through the young woman who cashed me out that the points system doesn't carry over from one location to the next. It sounds so odd to me. Each store has its own points system. Why? How convenient is that to everyone involved? It was also weird that she didn't ask if I wanted to sign up for this rewards program strictly at this store. In a way, I'm glad that she didn't. I don't come here all that often. After installing the new leaf hammock, my fish is back to lounging on it. I'm glad that he likes the larger size. Anyway, this store is huge. You can spend a good hour or two looking at everything from iguanas to goldfish, and all accessories for them to thrive and love. (39)
