Big Bear is a reliable place to shop, for the diversity, equity and inclusion people. Convenient and on the transit line are both locations. Not to mention the prices are affordable.

First things first. You cannot rank Big Bear against other, major, brand name chain grocery stores. You can't even expect that sort of experience when you walk into its doors. If you're over a certain age and were born and raised in the South, chances are you had a discount grocery store like Big Bear somewhere in or near your 'hood. If your family wasn't able to afford a lot of fresh produce or meats, chances are you shopped at a store like Big Bear growing up. For that reason, I consider the store something of a cultural throwback. It's very popular with 'West-End-ian' seniors who are on restricted incomes - it's a place where they can make their dollar stretch. It's a treat to be able to rub elbows with the seniors there, even though they can git a little ornery if you take too much time at the often-crowded produce section. My personal recommendation? Shop the outside aisles only - meat, produce, some frozen goods - as the products there are significantly cheaper than you will find ANYWHERE else in the city. You won't find exotic offerings here either - just the basics. So fill your basic meat and produce needs at Big Bear and do the rest of your shopping at a big box grocer. The amount you'll save on the Big Bear items makes it worth 2 stops to complete your grocery list. If "female food stampers" (as reviewer David K. so tolerantly describes the patrons there) unnerve you or make you feel a little too self-conscious about your obvious privilege, then it might be best for you to avoid this place. Perhaps you're better off going somewhere where shopping is a pleasure, instead of somewhere were you'll actually have to engage with people who may be of a different gender, color, or socioeconomic background than you are.

I love Big Bear on Candler also, because of produce and butcher shop but the store prices otherwise are too high.

I came here for some already prepared food and it was a great find…read more Shopping carts look old but all the wheels work. They have hand carts and smaller buggies in the store. You have to get one of the big shopping carts out the parking lot yourself. The produce section is huge and loaded with the freshest produce. The prices look bigger than Kroger put on the same level as Publix. This place is essentially an international market mixed with a farmer's market .The seafood section is humongous. I got some sushi, grilled Markel, and chicken fried rice from the korean section. In the butcher section, I got pork belly, goat, lamb, chicken wings, and pork shoulder. All the food was amazing.

I purchased a pack of tofu along with some other items on March 11. I open the fridge a few days later on March 15, finally ready to prepare the tofu, just to see that the exp date on the pack was March 10. This picture was taken March 15 upon this discovery. I meant to update this review a while ago. I just can't spend money here anymore knowing that I'm liable to accidentally purchase old products. As customers, we should not have to be this vigilant at a grocery store... it's ridiculous.

This is my go to store. It used to feel small but I realized it had everything I wanted/needed…read morewithout walking forever or needing an hour or more to go get weekly supplies. Fruits/vegetables are fresh- in good shape- decently priced. I wish they were a bit more economical but quality is there. There are always deals if you watch for it. Submarine sandwiches- be ready to get in line but good news is- they are awesome! They are large and fresh. Bakery / Seafood/butcher- I rarely use so I can tell you it's there and always has someone ready to help. Publix bargains are BOGO or buy one get one. At first, I didn't think much of this program but over the years- I've really seen the value. Stack a coupon on top of it and really getting a deal. Pharmacy- really nice caring knowledgeable staff. They are always in demand and still take time to talk to answer questions and help. Free garage parking. A block from midtown marta station. They do have a reward coupon option app. Only negative is pharmacy, sandwich, & check out lines are long during rush hour. So, plan ahead to go before or after (5-7pm).
