Big Boss Burrito was the spot for our first meal in Norfolk, a group of six of us in town for a college friend reunion, mostly out of towners trying the Norfolk food scene for the first time. Norfolk isn't known as a foodie destination, but based on this first restaurant, the food here is pretty good and worth a visit. My friend who lives in Norfolk recommended it, and it's in a lively commercial spot near where we stayed. Parking was easy in the lot, and even with no reservation, 6 people walking in on a Friday night, we got seated right away. There's a handwritten note on the menu saying chips and salsa is one complimentary basket per table, and since we split into two tables, we ended up with two, which worked out nicely. Good queso to me comes down to viscosity. The thinner it runs, the better, gloppy queso is no bueno. This one ran right off the chip like water, which is exactly what I want. We ordered it to share and demolished it within a few minutes. Most of my group ordered tacos, which come in a single meat type, three to an order. Everyone ordered a different meat type and then traded so each person ended up with one of each kind, a fun way to try more of the menu. The fish tacos were a highlight for them. I was the only one who went a different direction, getting the chicken fajitas, which I split with a friend since the portion was huge, sizzling hot, loaded with chicken, peppers, and onions. My one gripe is they only gave us three tortillas for that much meat, so the tortilla to filling ratio was off. We left extremely full, and pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the food was ($30-40 a person, even with each person having a drink). Service was fast and friendly the whole night, and paying at the end was quick too. Drink-wise, the Trash Can looked very intriguing with almost 5 different liquor options, but I ultimately played it safe with a Paloma. Two friends got margaritas, one of which came practically the size of my friend's head, others had beers. My only real complaint is the drinks run sweet. I thought the Paloma would be the least sweet option, but it was still quite sweet for my taste. The margarita friends also said their margaritas were oversalted, like the salt fell in instead of staying on the rim. Small gripes aside, this was a great spot and I'd absolutely go back next time I'm in Norfolk. read more

The food was great! Unfortunately, the service was... well, something to scoff at. We started out with two waitresses, and it became apparent pretty quickly that one of them was new. We received a basket of nice, warm tortilla chips--which I'll give them credit for--but ONE small bowl of salsa that was barely filled. We had to ask for the white sauce, and when we requested another basket of chips, we were surprised to notice on the menu that additional baskets came with an extra charge. After we FINALLY received our drinks--which were all waters--and three small shots, the more experienced waitress essentially disappeared, leaving us with the clearly new and inexperienced server. I have no problem with someone being new; everyone has to learn. But if you're training a new employee, they should have support. We never received water refills, and the overall attentiveness simply wasn't there. The atmosphere didn't help either. There were flies around the dining area, and remodeling was being done, which definitely took away from the experience. Then came the bill. I HATE FEELING LIKE I PAID SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE ITS RHW WORSE FEELING I have absolutely no problem spending money to take my family out and enjoy a good meal. What bothered me was paying that bill and feeling like the only thing I was paying for was the opportunity to finally LEAVE. When the food is good but the service and atmosphere make you regret dining in, something is wrong. The food deserves credit--it really was good. But based on our overall experience, I couldn't recommend dining here. If I ever ordered from this restaurant again, it would probably be delivery or takeout. Total Friends a Family recommendation...hell, I'd even recommend this to people I don't care for because it's so freaking good.... everyone needs to eat here. 100% legent and I am so adding this to my Yelp Favorites. My son and I were hungry after spending all morning fishing and were looking for a place to grab lunch. Any place claiming to be the Big Boss when it comes to burritos peaks my interest. The restaurant itself was clean, well maintained, the wait staff were friendly and attentive without being over bearing. The menu is extensive and I had a hard time narrowing down my options. But, as I'm a fan of Birria and especially birria tacos the Birria Burrito peaked my interest so I ordered the Birria Burrito...and could not be happier. Without an any reservations, I can say that my burrito was delicious...nothing negative I can say. I thought I was hungry, but I could not finish it. So, Bonus burrito appetizer for me tonight. Saw this little gem on TikTok and I knew I had to try it immediately! Our server was so sweet and kind . She was helpful and paid attention to detail . The inside filled up quickly as it has limited seating but it was welcoming and you can tell it's a nice neighborhood gem ! We ordered a little bit of everything - the guacamole we normally prefer it to be spicy... we did have to doc it up by adding some salt and it didn't have the kick we were looking for but it was still good . The empanadas bread was doughy but so good one of the sauces was sweet and the other had a mayo base . The tacos were very good lots of cheese ! We'll definitely be back! read more

Went here Tuesday after 7pm. Inside isn't very big, but there was one booth open when we walked in so we opted to go ahead and eat inside. There's a decent amount of space in the outside dining area though. Service was just okay to me. To eat: I ordered the steak trio (9/10) the steak was seasoned perfectly, the chicken and shrimp were also tasty, and the rice and beans were alright. I also ordered street corn (10/10), loved the flavors. To drink: I asked for a raspberry margarita (0/10), no raspberry flavor at all. Only thing I could taste was a very faint house margarita mixer. While dining I overheard a different table returned their margarita flights because none of them had any flavor. Not sure if this is the usual case with their drinks or just the fault of the bar tender this night, but their drinks were not being made well during my dining experience. I see myself returning for the food, but definitely not for drinks. I hope though if I do return and decide to give their drinks another chance, that it'll actually have flavor. Finally! A place to cure my homesickness for San Diego Mexican food! I got the hearty juicy Big Boss Birria Burrito both times because it's so good I just can't help myself! It comes with an birria au jus. Both times it was the best tasting burrito I've ever had...even beats all the burritos I've had in San Diego! My side of guacamole was fresh and huge and chips were homemade as well. The flan was authentic - the real deal. This Big Boss Burrito's location has warm ambiance inside and a nice vibe altogether on the main beach drag . I sat inside and my booth was comfortable. I chose the indoor seating because, although the patio itself had a nice vibe, the seating could be improved to be more inviting and less sparse looking. ALL of the staff was friendly and attentive but not bothersome. That would be great if they served breakfast burritos but, just like a lot of places on the east coast, they don't even know what those are. I guess that is just a so cal thing. Anyway, Big Boss Burritos beats all the other supposed Mexican food joints I've tried out here. This place should be a 5-star restaurant. I'm giving them three stars because of the smell. The restaurant had a weird smell. It could have been disinfectant, but it was not good. Luckily, they have outdoor seating. The outdoor seating faces Ocean View Road, so there is a lot of vehicle noise. The service was fine; I have zero complaints. The food. And this is where this place shines. Birria tacos are excellent. They're messy and topped with onions, cilantro and Melted cheese and sauce was on the side. Carnitas tacos. Slow-cooked pork with red onions and cilantro. Very good. I think that birria tacos are great, but sometimes, the sauce covers up the flavor of the meat. The pork was out in front. I like how close Big Boss is to my home. Biking there will be fun! The food was pretty good (I've had better refried beans at Jessy's or even Azteca), but the service could use some improvement. (I realize they are new, and still working out the kinks) When we were seated, I asked the young lady (who appeared to be Latino) if they had any dishes with mole sauce. Not only was she not sure if there's any dishes with mole...but she had never heard of mole sauce! Really?! Someone in our party had ordered a horchata drink. When it was empty, I asked the server if a refill was included free. She said "Yes it is". When I paid my bill, I then saw I was charged for the refill. By that time I was so ready to go...I didn't want to wait to speak to the manager or whatever... Quiet environment here, it was empty for lunch with no customers. Don't sit outside because your food will get swamped by flys that won't go away. Queso was decent and I got a quesadilla but it's nothing to rave about. The salsa taste like it comes out of a can, chips were over fried and hard. The aguas Fresca was actually great. I had passed this place several times before they opened and I just happened to drive by on the Fourth of July and noticed that they were open so me and my daughter made a conscious effort to come and check this place out for lunch today. My daughter ordered the Philly cheesesteak burrito and I had the Birria tacos. When I come into a restaurant to do a review, I look at everything how the staff treats you how the food taste compared to other places my daughter was very impressed with her burrito with the exception that it was overloaded with green peppers, I took a bite and I agreedshe tasted my tacos and said that they were more flavorful than the other style of tacos that we had in various other places the only thing that I was disappointed about was on the menu when I ordered. my meal was supposed to come with three tacos, rice and beans. I didn't realize until I actually reviewed the menu again before I wrote this post and I never got my rice and beans and that's normally what I really enjoy next to the tacos, the staff was nice. The young lady that waited on us was a little eager. She kept asking when we ready to order, but we needed a minute because the menu is very fast if you go online or their website, please note the menu in-house. The prices are higher. We did notice that because we did a little bit of reviewing the place and looking at other people's reviews before we even went. I can honestly say I will go back but when I go back, I'm going to make sure that I look at the menu and get exactly what I paid for. We spent almost $70 with tip and we didn't get all of our food. That's a little pricey for a burrito and just three tacos oh my daughter had a large passion fruit drink. The meat was worse than steak mmmmms. I messaged the restaurant on fb messenger and never heard back. So the restaurant opens and we figured it would be better than the truck. Both the birria tacos & ground beef tasted straight up bland, the ground beef had ZERO seasoning (and this is coming from someone the shade of paper). We've eaten here 4x since they have opened. Each time has been as good as the last or better. The guacamole is uniquely delicious and the Big Boss burrito and the Big Boss Quesadilla is a favorite especially with the generous portions of protein and flavor. The Mojarra Frita is far and away the best in the area, perfectly fried and has far more flavor than anywhere else. My first visit was today for my birthday. It was a party of 4, 3 of the 4 order burritos and I order quesadilla. The 3 burritos came out and no quesadilla. The other people at my table had finished half of their food before my plate even came. The actual quesadilla was greasy and the steak was not tender. Had a Popeyes burrito, it was lacking the taste and expectation of how it read on the menu. The burrito was very good size but had way too much juice kept running out the tortilla and made it very soggy. For starters, the website prices were way off. They advertise burritos at $11 when they are really $18 and churros at $6 when they are $8.
