The complimentary chips & salsa were also very good, and the horchata was tasty and really well-priced, considering we've never seen one for under $5 anywhere else in the area. While the atmosphere isn't anything particularly exciting, I would pass on ambience every time to eat that beef enchilada, again; their focus is on making authentic food and that's really all that matters. I was so impressed with the tacos the last visit that i had to come back for more. I will say it wasn't the same experience as the 1st time. The tacos weren't as flavorful, they weren't hot, and it was about a 10 minute wait. The wait wasn't a problem but i did expect the food to be hot since we were already there. The tortillas got limp and it was downhill from there. But when they're hot and fresh they really are good!!! I also got beans and rice. It was a very small portion and they spilled in the bag because he put my order and my daughters order in the same bag and it was just too much. So the box got smashed and opened and the rice and beans spilled inside... Bummer!! It had to just be an off day. I will still continue to eat here because I'm hoping the next visit will be better. 5/5 !!! I came across this restaurant looking for something to eat while my car was being worked on Across the street. Roberto greeted and helped me instantly upon walking in. He helped recommend what I should order based on what I was craving. He was very attentive, and being from Cali it's hard to find a family owned good Mexican spot. I will DEFINITELY be returning to try other menu items like pupusas and their pozole! The restaurant was quite but intimate and it was clean and well stocked. Unassuming from the outside but cute on the inside, you get transported to an interior that reminds you of a Mexican hut/counter look, with streamers, piñatas in a corner. Very friendly staff greets you with a welcoming smile. I ordered the chorizo breakfast tacos, come in 3. I ordered carryout, was ready in 10 minutes. They gave chili and green sauce. We tried the Fish Taco (served with tomatoes, lettuce, and avocado), the Shrimp Taco (topped with tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, and fresh cheese), and asada tacos with onions (opting out of cilantro). The flavors were just okay - the fish taco seemed to have been the best out of the 3 proteins, but I felt as if the tortilla could have been better. Walked in and we waited for about 3 mins before we were helped. Gentleman, named Robert was the host/waiter. Very nice and explained the restaurant to us and who owned it and how family oriented it is. Ordered the regular burrito, kids quesadilla with chicken, caldo de res, un taco de lengua, guacamole and queso. Despite it taking a little long for the food to come out, when it did- it did NOT disappoint. It was fresh, hot and the portions are huge for the amount it cost. There was flavor in every bite. The house salsas were very good, I enjoyed the spicy red one and the tang of the salsa verde. The meat in the Caldo was fall off the bone tender, I wish I got more veggies but it already came with so much, I just love veggies. The chicken in the burrito had so much flavor in it and my husband tends to be skeptical on trying new places and he said we'll definitely be back! I started out simple with a beef taco, a chicken tostada and a California burrito. This is enough for 2 people. Very filling. Make sure when you get the taco you get the corn tortilla it adds great flavor. The California burrito comes with fries and I love to dip them in the amazingly fresh and tasty guacamole. The service was great, the waitress recommended some dishes that were on point. They also own a little store where they sell meat and some of them are already marinated. 4/19 So they are on their way to making the fatal mistake that restaurants with a cult following make, which is they start changing things for the worst. For the life of me I cannot understand the logic to that business plan. They've started charging for the chips and salsa which is an absolute NONE starter for me. I will avoid a place just for that shenanigan. They don't give you and itemized receipt they just expect you to trust their math which was wrong in my case when I started asking questions. The portion sizes seem smaller but that was my first impression. The taste still seems spot on but that may not be enough. 2018 Question, should I have tacos at Nico's Answer, you can't afford not to eat tacos at Nico's Best tacos in Hampton roads. This little hole in the wall is currently my top taco spot in Virginia Beach. The shopping center don't really invite you in and their restaurant doesn't have a super welcoming vibe either. It's just some tables & chairs. They don't even have a restroom for customers. It feels like they don't mind if you eat there, but they don't want to encourage it and aren't taking extra measures to make you feel comfortable dining in. This is totally fine with me. There isn't anything flashy about it- I usually call ahead or place my order to go . Do you really need all those flashy touches to produce some damn good tacos? Nope. I've made the mistake of going to a different taco shop that is super hyped on Yelp and not getting tacos. I didn't love what I got and so I had a hard time buying into the hype from the other reviews. I didn't make that mistake with Nico's- but unfortunately for this review I can only judge the tacos & service. Maybe one day I will branch out and explore more of the menu, but probably not since it's my new go-to to-go taco shop. (Woah- now try saying go-to to-go taco 10x fast) Let me first say I have never had a bad service experience here. Everyone working here has been really friendly, and the first time I visited I remember the woman being very patient with me as I asked questions. The ordering is simple on the phone and usually takes me under a minute. Even though the physical appearance doesn't have a super friendly vibe, the people working here make up for it! The prices are super affordable and they have a great sauces (one red, one green). My favorite tacos here are the asada tacos. They come with a lime wedge, cilantro, and onions- as do most of their tacos. The chorizo has been hit or miss for me, last time I got it, it was burnt and yesterday it was perfect. I love the shrimp tacos they have a slice of avocado on them that adds some extra yum! I have also tried the tongue, very good, and the lamb, not my favorite. I thought lamb would be unique because I have never had a lamb taco. It was a little dry for my taste and had the texture of pulled pork, which I'm not a fan of. I haven't tried the carnitas, but they are my best friend's favorite. My biggest tip- get the corn tortillas. If I had tried the flour tortillas first, this probably would have been a four star review and I wouldn't be so sold on them. I usually stick to flour tortillas unless I know they are made in house like they are at Nico's - but yesterday I mistakenly ordered flour tortillas. They were fine, but definitely not a compliment to the meat like the corn tortillas are. There is something just excellent about them! I think this place is fantastic. Really unimpressed. I came here for the first time. Ordered a regular carne asada burrito w added guacamole in the burrito. With a side of chips and salsa and it was $19. That seems steep to me. When I went in to get my order they accidentally made a side of guac instead of putting it in the burrito. Instead of offering me the guacamole or making me a new burrito they scooped out half the guacamole. They said they could either reimburse me the $1 it cost or charge me and additional $5 for the side. So a mistake on the restaurants part with no good customer service to make up for it. Wow! Hole in the wall. This place made it very easy for me to judge. With the affordable prices of 2-3$ each we got 3 variations of tacos. This is the best way to go because if I only would of got the fish tacos I would of never returned. It's a breaded fish with no sauce. On the flip side the shrimp taco came out juicy and included pineapple and avocado. The shrimp tacos were recommended by the staff. And we got carne Asada which was very flavorful. Nico's Tacos makes absolutely fantastic food. I picked up an assortment of tacos and a burrito for dinner for my wife and I. The beef and lamb tacos are delicious and the fish and shrimp tacos are fantastic! I don't like guacamole and the guac on these was amazing! The California burrito was stuffed with fries and had additional fries on the side - also delicious! I think they recently expanded into the unit next door, so they're still getting set up, but that clearly hasn't affected the quality of their food. Highly recommended! read more

We ordered a bunch of tacos and they were so hot and smelled so good. The fish taco was fried, but did not feel heavy. The pork pastor had bits of pineapple and were slightly sweet and addicting. The pandemic is still here and it was Cinco de Mayo AND Taco Tuesday so it was no surprise they were slammed busy and the parking lot was parked up with people waiting to pick up. But the wait was worth it! We ordered chilaquiles verdes, a breakfast burrito, a gordita, a huarache, and several tacos. Everything was delicious.
