Absolutely incredible how they have redone Big Break. I used to come here as a kid and feed the ducks with my dad by the boat launch area (that was all there used to be, with just a small bait shop/convenience store). Now they have a visitor center now with walk-along fact outposts re: the delta and San Joaquin waterways. I learned a lot and there is so much to discover for kids with all the informational play areas. Novelty amenities. Bathrooms are clean. Big picnic area and fishing spot. Come get in on the local tourism! read more

What a gem this place is to have as a backyard out here. Nice area to go fishing , picnic space, sand area for kids, and a nice small trail to get some steps in. They have bathrooms (a big step from porter potties but the toilet is still porter potty style). I feel like this place is well maintained and safe for the most part. I've seen boys scouts by the benches camp ground and lots of people still taking strolls/runs with their families even at early evening times. Nicely tucked by the water so you get a fresh breeze, lots of birds, and trees. Lots of parking also but if you're able to walk from your home-- it's a nice quick walk. Love it here. read more

They have a nice set up at BIG Break Shoreline! Brought the bike and he rode whole we walked the trail to the shore. Beautiful dock and attractions include the museum! From old artifacts to new. Maps and animal prints in the concrete! Fun for kids with a play spot. read more

Nice quiet place to walk your dog and enjoy a sunset near the Delta. The park is clean, usually not crowded and there is a fun interactive map of the Delta water system as well as an educational center with lots of activities. I plan to return with my niece for one of the kayaking event. read more

I wanted to go to a park today, find a shady spot to park, brought some snacks & just chill for a few ... HELLO Big Break Regional Shoreline!! I had know idea this was here... I knew about or had heard about Big Break Marina but not this wonderful spot. Nice paved entrance & road to the parking lot with ample parking, nice and clean, nice trees providing shade, picnic tables some are covered with a sun shade, there is a nice trail to explore, clean restrooms overall just a really cool spot on the delta to enjoy nature & learn about the animals & fish that live in the delta & history of the delta plus so much more. The visitors center is an interactive, for all ages learning center with staff available to answer questions or help guide you through the center's numerous activities all free of charge. read more

Big Break is an East Bay Regional Park. They have an education center, fishing area and small hiking area. There is no cost to enter. East Bay Regional Parks are already awesome parks but now that they have docent-led homeschool programs, they are even more awesome! Thanks to Miriam and team for putting on such a great program! Always on the lookout for a park I haven't yet visited and during a warm Memorial Day weekend, decided to head out to the far reaches of the East Bay and visit this unique East Bay Regional Park. It was HOT inland but being near the Delta, there was a nice breeze that made walking the short paths down to the water quite pleasant. Big Break doesn't have a lot of trails but it is a jumping off point to hop on the paved Marsh Creek Trail which can take you all the way in to Brentwood. What Big Break does boast is plentiful parking, uncrowded picnic areas, a small but excellent visitor center and scenic views from their fishing pier. Along the way to the water, there's also an amazing topographical map of the waterways leading to the Delta and orients you to the East bay, north to Sacramento and east to Tracy and Lodi. Came here for a spontaneous post-dinner walk -- a great decision! The sunset along the water is so beautiful! The park overall was a little emptier and more spread out than I thought, but it still felt safe at around 7pm on a Friday. The paved walking path was very spacious and wide. Since there are marshes, just be careful of mosquitoes/bugs especially at dusk! read more

I LOVE this place!!! Flat, paved--great for strollers, people with disabilities, wheelchair-friendly, toddlers. Excellent wildlife museum, very interactive with friendly staff. Pond. Oceanside. Dock. What a great place! I can walk there from my neighborhood, and do, 3 or 4 times a week. If you are driving, and you park, there a 2 different ways to go. To the left- for a stroll, a picnic, fishing, a very cool map and some kind of a theater. I've never seen it crowded and the people who fish there are very friendly. Great place to take the kids to run around and blow off some steam. There is even a visitors center and they have some interesting programs. Definitely check it out. To the right, for the more serious walkers, runners, joggers, bikers. A paved path that goes for a few miles (not sure exactly how many because I have yet to get to the end). This path weaves through neighborhoods a few times but just stick with it. It's really worth exploring here, I've seen so many cool things. There is a dog free area for a little bit but be aware that people do walk their dogs on this trail so you might encounter poop. See you on the trail guys! Smile and say Hello. read more

Big Break Regional Shoreline has served the community in an important way: it's ensured that development of ticky tacky houses will not extend all the way to the Delta. It's also preserving an ecosphere that's good to experience. Some of the land is solid. Some of the land is marshy. Some of the land is underwater: the former asparagus farm that filled a small island, then a levee broke and flooded the island, and now it's become part of the East Bay Regional Parks. Overall, it's a small plot of land, not big enough for a long brisk walk, or to give your dog a workout. There are no hills, so no worries about getting up that incline. A pier was built to fish from, and it gets good use. There's also a ramp to put your boat into the water and explore the Delta from water level (you must carry the boat nearly a quarter mile to the ramp). A new visitor center is next to the parking lot. The most intriguing feature: a map on the ground outside showing what waterways empty into the Delta -- and if you pour water into one spot, it trickles down to the Delta in the same way that it does in real life. Big Break is not that great for the really active souls, but it is a nice place to explore, or to escape from suburbia for a time. read more

This is an interesting park - with a surprisingly robust visitors center. They do a lot of programs for kids and are all about educating folks about the Delta. There's a relatively short walking path that leads to a pier and an amphitheater. They have a kayak boat launch as well that may come in handy at a later date. The trail here connects to another trail system. We will return with our bikes to explore that. I would say this is a great resource for the local community - especially if you have kids (there's a nice sand pit area for them to play in). Also if you are coming for a particular program it makes sense. However, if I had driven a long distance just to walk around I would have been a little disappointed. read more

Good place to go on a nature walk with city kids and suburban little ones. We stopped off at the visitor center, which was very welcoming, and got an idea of what to look out for on our walk. We found: blackberries that we could eat off the brambles, egrets, hawks, river otter poop, owl pellets, crawdads in various stages of leftovers, little trails to the delta where we imagined otters climbed in and out. There was also an enormous sandbox and a map of the delta. I learned more about the delta than I knew there was to know. There is a mix of dirt trail and paved path options. It is highly accessible for all abilities and ages. read more

Big Break Regional Shoreline is a gem in the city of Oakley. You drive up to an area that looks to be secluded, but it turns into a large parking lot for visitors. After parking, take a small trail from the lot in between shrubbery and you find yourself among a land of its own. There is a huge 3D map on the ground of pretty much the entire contra costa county. The rest of the walk way has animal foot prints and leaves imprinted into the cement which adds quite a personal touch. To the right, you can find a small bonfire theatresque area where I'm sure campfire stories are told. And if you walk further along onto the dock, there is one lonely picnic table when you reach the very end. Perfect for romantic dates along the water. Also, I took a picture of an area that could be used for a sit down picnic on the ground. Although I feel as though it is actually used as an area to load small boats. Either way, this spot is truly mesmerizing for somewhere in the boonies! read more

Not my first time here but maybe third and I gotta say this place doesn't attract me like other places in the delta. Well the only thing I would say beneficial is that it's rally closer than many other marinas. With a $10 launch fee it's not bad but the terrible thing here is the killer winds. That's only if you go out beyond the sheltered areas. This place is gated so you would have to come and go within the business hours. A marina with rental business for kayaks and canoes you can take and enjoy a day of exploring the delta marshlands. Two stars because of hours of operation. Bad location due to scorching winds regularly. read more

This review is for biking on the Big Break Regional Trail, which provides a lot of solitude and peace along the water. Lots of blackberries good for picking and eating in the fall, and the trail is well-maintained and relatively smooth. If you're looking for a longer ride, the trail connects to the Marsh Creek Trail and heads all the way up to Round Valley Regional Preserve. Not too many people in the Brentwood & Oakley area, which makes for little to no traffic on the trails. Left my car from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm on a weekday and experienced no break-ins or vandalism. If you're worried about that kind of thing, there is a shopping center at the end of Big Break Rd. that you could also park in. No playgrounds for the kids, but a good start for a bike ride or run. read more

This is great place to enjoy a walk and get some exercise. There are plenty of trails for a individual to explore. Also this place is great if you want to bring the kids to for a outing. I went during the day, but it is probably even better in the morning. Just to listen to the birds chirping and having silence around. Looking forward to my next run over there. read more

Came here and visited the visitor's center and was a part of a tour group that was learning about where Southern California gets their water. Big Break was one of our stops and the park ranger and tour guide Mike gave a short presentation on what the Delta is, how it flows and works, and how it serves California farmers, consumers, environmentalists etc. Mike took us out to show us a few significant sites out on the park itself and was just an excellent tour guide with a lot of knowledge and a great laid back attitude. He answered everyone's questions from those that were here just looking around to those that had a political agenda and wanted to know more about farmers rights and agendas in the area If you ever visit Big Break, I encourage you to find Mike in the Visitor's Center and ask him to show you around. read more

This shoreline out in Oakley is becoming very beautiful. This project has been in the works for a loooong time. A certain area is still under construction. Its a great 1/2 mile walk or stroll down to the fishing pier. You can let the kids ride their bikes, stroller friendly, sorry kids its not scooter friendly. They have a beautiful picnic area with plenty of tables. Restrooms are in the parking lot and down at the fishing pier. There is a kids sand box with a cool dozer to play with. I see this place as becoming a well know little gem in Oakley soon enough. read more

The trail is easy, quiet, and flat. 2.75 miles. There is a Delta river flow map that shows where 40% freshwater supply comes from in CA. Very nice to learn! read more

The park is pretty limited. The visitor center is very nice and if you have little ones it might be kinda fun, for a little while. There are some pretty complete explanations of what they are trying to accomplish, which is worthwhile. Also if you want to launch a kayak it is not crowded, even on the weekend. But the Big Break Trail is not so much of a much. It takes you 2.7 miles through a residential area and then past the Sanitary District all via a fire road. There is a view of the marsh that gets really old after awhile, it never skirts the water at all. Also, the Marsh Creek Trail that it joins appears to be closed until October so when you get to the end you just have to turn around and come back. The facilities and grounds are well cared for but unless you either work or live very close probably not worth the effort. read more

Great place if you are being quiet and peaceful. Trails are ok if you wanna go with stroller or scooter. Kids love to being on the dock.Parking is free. Nice little gem out in the East Bay! It's tucked away in the far northeast of the region, located just past the City of Antioch. Living in the South Bay, it's a 1-1/2 to 2 hour drive just to make it out here, but it's worth the trip though. Nice trails running along the shoreline next to some residential areas. Plus, a short and easy route to the marina and the bay as well as a nice raised map of the delta area. read more

Today, September 27 was my first visit to this Amazing park. I enjoyed the beautiful nature scenery of the river, birds, and lots of fishes. I enjoy catching blue-gill fish for live bait to use :) Had the greatest time..and most diffently will be back for another glorious fishing day. Free parking :) read more

Great place! I took my grandkids for a quick visit. Got there before the visitors center opened so we headed out to the pier. Fun sand pit with dinosaur excavation. Saw small fish in the water but the kayak launch. Then headed back to the visitor center which was great. However I discovered soon after our visit I had 11 mosquito bites on arms and legs so if you go use bug spray! read more

It was a beautiful park out there. It was filled with waters, and parks and the exhibition center in there too. So much fun!
