This is such an amazing spot for fishing, and we genuinely enjoy coming here every time. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, making it a great place to relax and unwind. There are also plenty of animals around the area, which adds to the charm--you can walk around, take in the scenery, and really enjoy being in nature. While there's a lot you can do here, we usually come for the fishing, and it never disappoints. We've consistently had a good experience and always manage to catch something to take home, which makes each visit even more rewarding. This is a decent park for an early morning walk. I definitely wouldn't say the trail around the lake is a hike, as it has almost no grades and inclines. This is a great entry-level walk in nature or great for a stroll with the family. The path is partially paved, and also even dirt paths. There are a lot of picnic areas, benches, and places to fish. We saw a lot of people fishing here in the early hours of Saturday morning. Lots of parking and very busy. If you're walking alone, you will definitely feel safe here since there are so many people around. It's on the edge of a suburban neighborhood so there is some slight noise from traffic when you first park, but as you walk farther down the trail, there is less noise. Not very much shade, be mindful to wear sunscreen if you are walking this trail in peak sun hours! read more

It's a great place to hike. Early morning being the best. It is a public park in town so it can get busy. It gets packed with cars when the pool is opened. Also has wildlife so beware of the mountain lions. They have never chased me & I walked behind one for about 10 to 15 minutes before. It just mosied along like it knew we were there. My husband and I were invited to a BBQ picnic at this regional park during the 4th of July weekend by our friends. Last year when we were invited by the same friends for a birthday party, we got lost and arrived when they were about to leave. This time around I made sure I wrote the directions down and arrived on time. It's a long drive from Alameda to Antioch. Contra Loma Regional Park is a hidden gem, in an area that is quite a way from the main thoroughfare of Lone Tree Way. There are plenty of open areas for a BBQ picnic. I haven't walked the entire park, but I can just imagine. Another nice thing about this park is the reservoir for those who enjoy sailing, swimming and fishing. Oh, how I wish this park is closer to my home, so my husband and I would not have to travel far to enjoy the weather and get togethers with friends. A hidden gem in Antioch! Contra Loma Regional Park is gorgeous in any season. From all the crunchy leaves your heart desires to step on in the fall to the blooms of the spring. I highly suggest you get the East Bay Regional Parks pass, its only $60 for the year and it pays for itself if you visit often because it costs $5 to park per visit. On a budget? There's a free small parking lot just prior to the gate and it's only half a mile to the entrance of the park. One of the highlights of Contra Loma is its stunning lake. Whatever hiking path you take whether it's a light stroll to loop around the lake or heading up high to the hills, each path will pass you by the lake. People also come here to swim in the pool on the other side of the park. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, so there are plenty of birds and animals to watch. In addition to hikes, Contra Loma is great for picnics, there are plenty of tables and BBQ pits. When I went here I really enjoyed it with my mom! You can walk for ages and still have places to walk and that's a problem over here because there's practically nowhere to walk whatsoever so I appreciate it so much. It's a scenic walk beautiful by the water in the mountains wherever you wanna go there's probably a trail to get you there. The swimming pool is pretty cool I've never seen one set up like it before. Would definitely come back here in summertime because it's absolutely beautiful the only thing is you have to pay to get in we paid five dollars so it's not too bad to have something to do. Looking at how huge the places you can tell why they charge for it because if you want to actually take care of the place you need to charge. Five dollars is the perfect price if it goes up anymore I don't know if I'll be walking LOL. The pool is unfortunately closed and I'm so heartbroken but it's still pretty cold out. I would definitely recommend if you wanna take the kids out somewhere that'll let them dust off some steam this is the perfect place exhaust you along with the children so it's ideal haha. There's so much walking space we didn't even walk the whole trail because there was so many trails to take off of trails that go to trails LOL. If that makes sense whatsoever! I saw quite a few people fishing by the way if you see someone fishing please don't go swimming in the water you can't right now anyways. 45+ years we've been recreating at Contra Loma/Black Diamond. There are no signs regarding feeding ducks/geese. One employee chose not just state the rule, which again IS NOT POSTED ANYWHERE, but he chose to speak down to me, insulting my intelligence regarding conservation and ecology. He has no idea who I am or what I know. The geese/duck are going to migrate no matter what. They continue to eat their nature food (despite the fact humans are destroying their habit). Migration is built into their DNA. Besides that, they eat food from picnics, etc! They move from the golf course lake to Contra Loma year round. Furthermore, if he cared so much, he would clean up all the bags of dog poo & trash left by fisherman. The shoreline around the lake is a DISCUSTING! Furthermore, rather than water overnight, the park chooses to water mid day/morning so the grass burns. Additionally, their sprinklers are watering more path than grass. WASTEFUL! read more

This park is so beautiful this time of year. All the surrounding hills are so green and lush, it is amazing to look at. My husband and I came to Contra Loma for a day after Christmas hike/trail run, and it did not disappoint. We did a nice 4 mile out and back loop through some of the hills and then around the reservoir. The trails were very muddy and wet at times, but it was still a great time. It was very quiet and peaceful and there wasn't a lot of people using the trails at the time. However, the reservoir was pretty busy with people fishing. The park also have a public pool, which is obviously closed in December, but is something I would like to check out in warmer weather. There is a parking lot at Fredrickson Lane and that had several parking spots. Parking is free in that lot. There is also a parking lot down the road at the entrance that costs $5 to park. I learned about Contra Loma from the 2021 East Bay Regional Park''s 2021 trails challenge guide. The district manages this park which features a reservoir, big wide open spaces for hiking, picnic areas and trails that lead in to Black Diamond Mines. There's also a boat launch ramp and fishing in the reservoir as well as a pool that's open during non pandemic times. A little something for everyone! To start with, there are lots outside the park that lead to the trails up in the hills that are free of charge. If you are going right to the picnic areas or the reservoir, then there are a few lots past the main kiosk where it's $5 to park. Maps are provided if you need one although the trail system there doesn't look too complex. I hiked the Lakeview to Ridge trails which featured slight elevation gain and then headed down for a loop around the reservoir. On a nice sunny late winter Saturday there were people out hiking and fishing but not the warmer weather crowds I expect might be here once spring and summer kicks in. It still seemed like a lot of room to spread out. Well marked trails and lots of options in this unexpected find in Antioch. Our favorite park. We are retired so we have to make a point of getting out every day and getting some exercise. This is a favorite. There is a free parking lot maybe a half mile from the entrance. You can take your car in for $5. On hot days we will take the car in and then do our walking under the trees. Other times (cooler weather) we will use the free parking and walk. We always bring corn from a bird food place for the geese and some greens for the ducks. Do not bring bread. They will gobble it up but it is not good for them. Bring your camera. I love watching the pelicans take off and land. They added 2,000 of trout to the lake this month. Who wants to bet that the pelicans got more than the fisherfolks. There is a pier to fish from and you can bring your own boat. It must be clean and dry and be inspected. read more

I'm pleasantly pleased with my day trip to the park today!! I always seen the sign and we have lived in BayPoint over 16 years and never visited!! The swimming pool and picnic benches are closed due to COVID-19 which is understandable!! The mask ordinance is followed and if one did not have one they were social distancing!! Great spot for biking, hiking, fishing, dog walking, (BUT dog owners please be respectful and pick up the mess :(!!) The grounds was well maintained and as we walked the entire lake in my opinion, it was very clean as far as minimal trash!!! All you nature lovers, bird watchers and photographer great spot!! I appreciate that there is a place close to me that I can walk! I typically will park at James D park and walk up the hill/trail and walk from there! If you do go through the park entrance there is a fee! I would use the entrance if you are utilizing the pool or holding a bbq if you are just simply walking then park where I do for free! They keep this place pretty clean and I feel comfortable walking around. I typically see a lot of park workers/rangers as well which is nice. There is always people fishing as well. I don't use the pool but I have in the past and it gets extremely crowded! It's a popular place to swim or have a bbq. I have been coming here since before the pool lagoon when you used to swim in the actual water! Looking at the water now makes me wonder what we're we thinking! I went here recently for the first time during a weekday morning. Parked at James Donlon and walked the short distance. I encountered a few people along the trails and walked past fisherman hoping for a catch as they sat laid-back in their chairs. There are kind of two sections to this park. Towards the beginning there is a lot of hills for hiking. Parking is free! of you drive all the way up towards the lagoon then you have to pay. If you want to go hiking I recommend you park your car towards the front. You can walk all around the lagoon. This review is only for the hiking area. There are a lot of paved trails and a lot of dirt trails. This is a good place to bring dogs and also bikes. There are also picnic tables and plenty of shade. People also fish here and there are plenty of porter potties everywhere. You can't beat free and a good hike. I highly recommend this place it's worth trying. This review is long over due! I have been coming here every summer with my family the last few years and we LOVE it. It's a great location to take your kid/s or just go with your family or friends to BBQ, or even to throw a party! I've come for all reasons listed! The place is pretty big with lots of picnic tables and BBQ grills. The swim lagoon is perfect for a hot summer day! It's pretty big! And they even provide floaties for your little ones, if you don't have one. I would totally recommend this place for a fun day in the sun. And if you don't want to BBQ, pack your own food! I've brought sandwiches or even take out from restaurants to eat here! TIP: get there early, especially on the weekend, because it does gets packed and when they are at capacity they will not let you into the pool/lagoon. I have enjoyed hiking and using the swimming area here! The pool can get filled and they close it but there is a lot of grills n seating areas outside of the lagoon that allow the party to go on. I would suggest bringing back up water fun like water balloons and guns just in case. Also multiple trails for hiking and walks. They are easy trails as well. Great for a family day out. I took off 1 star because there were chips in the pool which grossed me out!! Who'd have thought there would be such a perk to living in Antioch? I love Contra Loma because it's almost like my personal dog park. I love all parts of it. There's of course the main park, where the lake is. There's a huge pool with concession stand and a large picnic area. I go to Contra Loma for the seclusion so I tend to stay away from that area. On the other side are baseball fields. I like walking my 2-legged dog on the side with the paid entrance because it's got a lot of shade in some areas, which makes the scorching Antioch summers bearable. We stick to the quieter areas of the park, which is most of it. Always see a few fishers (does anyone actually catch fish here?). It's so peaceful and relaxing here, and there's a nice path around the entire lake that is usually breezy. There is a fee if you want to drive into the park using the entrance closest to the pool and fishing area. Currently, it's $5 per car plus $2 per dog. But if you're a little less lazy, you could just park down the road for free and walk into the park. Or enter from the other side off James Donlan. Parking in the lot is free there. I bought an annual pass for about $50, which is good for 1 car + 1 dog (although I often bring more than 1 dog and they still let me in without paying anything extra). I don't come here that often, but I'm happy to support such a gem. The workers here are always friendly and aren't above stopping to pet my dogs. Note that dogs are not allowed in the lake or pool. Dogs are supposed to be leashed here. There's another area of Contra Loma as well. When coming down Frederickson, there's a huge open space to your left. Lots of bicyclists and joggers go here, as well as people with dogs and even horses. This part's free and you can let your dogs off-leash to go wild. We used to bring our 4-legged dogs here often. It's not as picturesque in this area, and there is absolutely no shade but there are endless trails if you want to go up the hills. The paths aren't paved and are mostly little rocks, which can cut into your dog's paws if they're running around a lot. It's more wild here so beware of rattlesnakes, ticks, and coyotes--all of which we have encountered. And cows. They bring the cows to graze here during parts of the year. I hate the cows. They're scary. A little side note: A couple of weeks ago, I left my wallet on top of my car during a drive down Lone Tree Way (brilliant, I know). Of course it fell off, and I couldn't find it while retracing my drive. I never expected to see it again. While I was on the phone with my bank to cancel my credit cards, somebody knocked on the door. It was a man driving a pale green East Bay Regional Park truck. He said he had found my wallet in the middle of the street, pulled over to pick it up, saw my address on my driver's license, and had come to return the wallet to me. Nothing was missing from it, not even the cash. Needless to say, I was thrilled. That's the kind of service I've come to associate with the regional park employees now. read more

It's a nice place to: Take a short walk. Take a long walk. Take a short hike. Take a long hike. Have a picnic. Do some fishing. Swim when it's open. Ride a horse. Have a party when the weather is nice. Clear your mind and be with your thoughts. There is plenty of parking and if you are looking to save a couple of dollars, you can park up the street from the entrance or on the other side of the reservoir, there's a parking lot off of Old Ranch Loop. It's pretty cool that this place is sandwiched in-between Lone Tree Golf Course, Antioch Community Park and Black Diamond Mines Regional Park. We were here for a hike and picnic. We took the West Shore trail, to the Ridge Trail and veered off up onto the Lake View trail. It's a pretty good elevation gain, which lends to an awesome view at the top. There really isn't any place to stop or hang out on the trail. It's just dirt paths and viewpoints. We were going to stop and eat at the horseman's camp but it wasn't anything more than a table, outhouse & hitching post in a parking lot. So, we opted to venture out onto the little island on the reservoir. There are plenty of picnic tables. There's one area packed with them and it says you can reserve the spot for a party. We chose a private little table at the end of the island. Unfortunately, it happened to be the one table with a trash can next to it and a couple of minutes into our meal, we realized we were sharing our picnic with a team of ants. So, learn from us and scout out the tables away from the trash cans. The swim lagoon looks really nice and I can imagine families have a great time here in the heat of summer. read more

I will be here for most of the summer if I can help it... SO worth the drive from Oakland if you want to plan a full day of fun, swim, heat, bbq, etc. For only $5 per person. I'm a huge fan of massive open spaces - I would live in New Mexico if I could! This place is perfect for anyone who wants a combination of beautiful landscape while chillin at the pool...and you will spend time in that pool. It gets HOT in Antioch! It IS fairly family oriented, so dont plan on going with your girlfriends for body watching or finding someone to swim up to the bar with. It IS the perfect place to NGAF and just post on top of the sand thats in the pool and watch the kiddos have the time of their lives while you complain about your life to your childhood friends. This park offered a nice escape into nature without having to go on a full blown hike. It featured a meandering trail that circled an 80-acre lake. We enjoyed the views and saw people fishing on the lake, jogging/walking/biking the trail, strolling babies, walking their dogs, and feeding the geese. We walked the trails, observed a herd of cows and threw boomerangs. I was SO thankful that we didn't encounter any ticks or rattlesnakes. Both make their home in this park so The East Bay Regional Park District shared some tips for avoiding the danger: Ticks -- Don't lean on or rest against the oak trees. -- Keep your pets on a leash so they stay on the trail. -- Stay on the trails yourself. -- Tuck your pants into your socks and your shirt into your pants. Rattlesnakes -- Never put your hands or your feet where you can't see. -- Stay on the trail. (The drought turned the high grasses bordering the trail yellow, making it even easier for rattlers to hide almost in plain sight.) -- If you insist on leaving the trail, at least make sure you're wearing sturdy high boots. A good part of the trail is in full sun. If for some reason you forget to bring your own water, you can buy bottled water at the vending machine at the pool house. The 30x70' public swimming pool was the jewel of this park. It looked like something out of a country club or resort instead of a place open to all local residents. The edge of the aqua blue pool touched the brim of the lake and there were rolling hills in the background. It was so nice that the geese were swimming in it instead of in the lake. Our annual work retreat was held here last month. The planning team (of which I successfully avoided being a member of) picked this relaxing location and everyone had a wonderful time. We were at the Cattail picnic area which is located very close to the swim lagoon. I would have taken advantage of the swim lagoon except that I do not believe in being so scantily clad in front of my coworkers. There were hoards of children swimming but the great outdoors still kept the noise to a minimum. There are many picnic areas and ours was especially nice because of all the trees which provided plenty of shade. We ate, some danced, we ate some more, other went for walks (there are lots of scenic trails easily accessible from the picnic area), we ate some more, and so on. $5 per car to enter the park. $3 (adult) to enjoy the swim lagoon. read more
