Things you wish you knew and now you do! The inn actually predates the giant mimetic capsicum plopped in its parking lot. In the 1960s, the motel was a traditional Ramada Inn. Clint Eastwood once stayed there while filming Hang Em' High, and memorabilia from the shoot can be found in the lobby. By 2010, the hotel had gone independent, and was looking for a new way to stand out. Then-owner David Girle, an engineer from Australia, had friends in the Disney scene, so they together they imagineered the 47-foot chile behemoth out of two-and-a-half tons of concrete. read more

I was very happy with my stay at the Big Chile Inn. I really enjoyed the friendly, supportive staff here. They really go the extra mile to make sure the guests feel safe. As long as you aren't here to make trouble. Sure the rooms may be a little outdated, but overall, I have enjoyed having a room here, and it was worth every penny I paid for it because I appreciate the way the staff does such a great job to support their guests. Sometimes you have to see past the little details in order to find what really matters. Made for a very productive and comfortable stay. It really made my travels to be able to enjoy a room here. Like I said we had to leave on an emergency and was at this hotel 20 min. The owner STILL charged us a full night. Shame on you .also again it's not for everyone .i do not like creepy people staying where I am sleeping. If you have kids I don't think you would be comfortable, I know I wouldn't. We appreciate the spacious, comfortable rooms, relaxing and playing a game of chess in the lobby, feeding the koi in the pond and the awesome view of the Organ Mountains. The front desk, housekeeping and maintenance staff all make an effort to assure a pleasant stay. There is an added layer of comfort and security knowing that the gates to the parking lot are closed at night. It is close to good restaurants, a world class museum and awesome nature parks. Do yourself a favor and stay here. This place is fabulous, full of charm and less than $60. My husband stayed here 2 years ago and loved it. The beds are simply amazing and the owners are terrific! This place is just the basics but what else do you really need? It's clean, extremely quiet and definitely worth a visit. If anyone has negative comments it's probably because they can't appreciate a charming little off the path kind of place. The decor doesn't match but I won't lose sleep over it. There's a flat screen TV and Dave, the owner, showed us to our room and shook our hands. He also thanked my husband for his return business. I have to say this is the worst place I have ever stayed at, I'm No even over exaggerating. So I came up here and my truck broke down alright cool I can deal with that. I found a hotel across the street from the automotive shop that looked decent. I decided to get a room at the Big Chili Inn for two nights. 1st night granted it was my fault I got locked out of my room. I called and called and called come to find out there is No absolutely No over night clerk, so I slept in my truck. Well the next the next night I was getting some sleep and I woke up to my truck broke into thank goodness I didn't have any important paperwork in there but they did take my grandsons swing, my system and my clothes worst time I've ever had. I do have one good thing I have to say though the day clerk he was actually really cool and concerned made sure the owner knew about everything and very apologetic so that was cool read more

This hotel is bare-bones basic. It front-loads all its charm, but the experience falls apart once you get to your room. On arrival we were enchanted by the big chile, the huge cheerful lobby and the pretty courtyard area. But that's where the fun ends. We stayed in room 231. It was shabby. It had a crummy kitchenette, which we didn't use but it gave the room the feel of a depressing studio apartment. If we had wanted to use the kitchenette it would have been useless anyway: no stovetop or oven, no utensils, dishes, cups or ANYTHING - just empty cupboards and drawers. The bathroom was cramped and sad. Not entirely clean. Toilet bowl stained with brown streaks. Extractor not working. Dirty light switch. Shower head was at chest level. Smoke alarm in room had been removed from ceiling and tossed on a shelf. This is very dangerous, surely? Room had a weird closet with no hangers. So, that was also useless. What else? One of the bedside lamps didn't work. The window blind had either broken, or been pulled, off the wall. There was a broken bracket still hanging there, and the blind had been just leaned up against the wall in the corner of the room. No hair dryer or coffee maker in the room. Not dealbreakers but, again, added to the very poor experience we had. Some of the other guests looked sketchy, like they were long term residents. Overall I'm really glad we were only there one night. Checking out of that room ASAP in the morning and finding that our car had NOT been broken into was the highlight of the stay. Would NOT recommend this place. read more

America's Best Value Inn with DISTINCTION - there's the world's largest chili sitting out front. There's a sinking garden out front, and a VW van with another red chili on top of it. You can't miss it on Picacho Avenue (and if you do, it's next to the Pancake Alley). My sister was jazzed to book the place with the giant chili out front, and we were pleasantly surprised by the super-nice owners (who bring you chips and salsa to your room when you settle in) and the grounds. The grounds are beautiful, with cacti gardens and a koi pond. There are also vegetables growing in a raised container. The room itself is clean and pet-friendly, and there is parking right outside the rooms. Free WiFi. Several grills (BBQ, anyone?) available for use in the courtyard. Great place to stop when you are driving through New Mexico, and conveniently close to the Caliche's Frozen Custard stand (you will want some of that in the hot summer days). read more

I was not impressed and became quickly disappointed to find this cute desert inn in the middle of Tweakerville!! I should have known from the sign KITCHENETTES $45 MONTHLY. My husband suggested to leave and get another place yet we stuck it out. It's s good habit that I always pack Lysol disinfect the room and beds, and looking underneath the bed was a pair of Chankkas. Those I will not touch but I did let the Front Desk know Also, no drapes in the windows. Very wrong. The manager said that was a corporate decision. Good thing I improvised because my family's privacy is important as their well being. It's a good thing I do pack and I'm not talking Lysol! read more

Feb-2015 Worried about Safety; Slept Well, Clean Room, Inexpensive, Rough around the Edges. We experienced feelings of dismay & trepidation when we drove up onto the broken pavement parking lot, saw the restaurants on either side with signs they were Out of Business & saw the lobby incredibly cluttered with odds & ends, knick-knacks, straggly & dying plants, choked aquariums & misc furniture. The check in process went smoothly & the room was inviting, clean & comfortable. We spent an hour photographing their iconic Big Chile & the beautiful tile work in the entranceway to the lobby. Later, we were alarmed to discover little to no lighting in the parking lots to the side & back of the motel closest to our room & low lighting in the walkways we traveled to get to the room. The interior & surrounding grounds were also cluttered with a mish-mash of metal & plastic sculptures & straggly potted plants. Couldn't help but wonder if the money spent on the decorations & plants wouldn't have been better spent on safer lighting. There were no sit down restaurants in either direction as far as the eye could see which made us wonder why the ones on either side of The Big Chile couldn't sustain business - was this a dangerous neighborhood? Our night passed uneventfully. But the concerns we experienced about our safety & that of our car & stuff lingers on. I like to avoid cookie-cutter hotel rooms when on vacation & seek places with history or character. The Big Chile has character at an affordable rate & comfortable bed but I do consider this a cautionary tale. read more

Bug infested. Patio furniture looks like it's 50 years old, torn, dirty. Free breakfast, food police won't let u take it out of the lobby. Room reeks of cigarette. Doors don't lock from the inside in this crime infested part of town. Smell of marijuana the whole stay. Can't have anyone in your room after 9, the security guy with a taser flashlight will come kick you out if you do. The swimming pool is obviously public, saw a carload leave the pool, were not guests. read more

This hotel is a true gem. The owners are kind and interesting people that have clearly poured a lot of love and creativity into this charming and extremely reasonably priced hotel. The lobby and courtyard are filled with gorgeous plants and there is a cool, quirky chile pepper motif that really helps the hotel stand out from all the others nearby. They've got free wi-fi, a lovely pool and nice continental breakfast. The bed was very comfortable, the room was clean, quiet and well appointed. Here's a small detail that really impressed me. There were two or three power strips at the room's outlets, making it possible to charge and power up all necessary devices for another day of travel without having to move bedside tables or unplug extra lamps, etc. Just one example of the thought that David and Elina have put into the place. The plate of chips and salsa and a few slices of delicious mango upon check-in were the real icing on the cake for me. This hotel has made my short list. So nice to know that I can stay here on my semi-annual treks between CA and FL. See you guys again soon. read more

I ended up here based on Don's strong review, especially the "real great American motor hotel classic" part. This piqued my curiosity. I LOVE this place. It has charm, interest, and beauty. Very warm staff, good price, and personal touches. My room faced the courtyard which is home to a botanical garden cared for by one of the owners (with labels for the specimens!), and an Australian desert garden. So cool. Nice pool, fast wifi, fresh fruit. I had been traveling for days, and it was so refreshing to find a motel that wasn't made with a cookie cutter. I wandered around and took photos in the courtyard, because it was so unusual yet lovely. If you generally like hostels, you'll probably like this place. However, I should say, if you like things very orderly and predictable, you may not. It's slightly seedy, which is part of its charm to me. Oh yeah, and this was the first motel room in 4 nights that didn't have a nasty stale cigarette smell (though they were all "non-smoking"). THAT was a relief. Enjoy =) read more

Had to transfer hotels because the owner told us we could not leave the pets in the rooms even though it said everywhere it is a pet friendly hotel. In all fairness staff at America's best inn was very nice and did quickly offer a refund. As a traveller with dogs my concern is that other people may want to leave their dogs while they are out sight-seeing just like us. To be honest I have never stayed at a pet-friendly hotel where dogs could not be left unaccompanied. We would have gladly requested to get transferred to a room where pets were allowed but it would have defeated the purpose if we could not leave them anyways. read more

Definitely a cut above a budget hotel. Plus, there's a GIANT chili pepper covered in white Christmas lights out front. Awesome. Upon entering, a very car-weary Hangover Cat was warmly greeted by the proprietors. They set her and her favourite feline companion up with a room and while one of the owners explained the complimentary wi-fi, the other rushed off to turn on the heat to mitigate the freezing cold winds blowing outside. Free chips & salsa and grapes were a lovely token. Bed's a little firm but, let's not kid, I've been driving for 11 hours and it's a warm, clean, inviting place to crash. Huge fan of this place! Such care is taken to make it comfortable and more than just a motel. Each room has it's own unique style. Every outdoor space has been cared for. There is an amazing coy pond in the really spacious courtyard. All sorts of different sitting places and pergolas. A bbq grill too! The proprietors greeted us and were utterly delightful! I met their daughter the next day at breakfast, so sweet and kind. I wouldn't stay anywhere else if I were in Las Cruces! Besides, who can pass up the World's Largest Chili Pepper??? read more

We chose this hotel for it's great reivews on Trip adviser, and some of the yelp reviews. YES it's true its a great deal for what you get. And what you get a is "Family Owned Business" The owner kept letting us know that every other word he would say. You get a bed that is as hard as a cement floor, pillows that are toooooo soft you wake up with a sore shoulder and neck. It wasn't all bad they have a parking lot that has a gate that closes at night, and your car is safe on the other side. It's quiet and the water is hot! It's a place to stay. read more

Very cute & clean little hotel. It has the worlds biggest chili outside of the entrance. Very unique & great customer service. It is a family run business and the owner was very kind and welcoming. Our room was just what we needed: TV, comfy bed, little fridge and microwave. You get a complimentary water or soda when you come in and the owner offers you chips and salsa :) It has a small koi fish pond and a cute little pool. When we checked out we were greeted by a sweet little boy who took our keys, wished us a great day, and gave us a postcard. I stayed at this motel twice on a road trip awhile back and was very pleased with the rates, the rooms, the conviviality of the staff, and pleased by the work the new owner is putting in to reviving one of the real great American motor hotel classics. The rooms I had were clean and friendly (mine were on the quiet courtyard), but because of their recent renovation, didn't quite have everything working smoothly yet. I.e. recent plumbing work meant that it took a second for the water to make it to the sink after the tap was turned (the second time was fine, of course). After reading the other reviews, we were super excited about staying here. At first, it seemed true to form -- the owner did indeed bring us complimentary chips and salsa when we arrived. After that, though, it was all downhill. We were given a handicap room, so the shower was regulated to not be too hot. This one, however, was hard-wired to COLD, and they didn't seem to care or be apologetic when we told them about it. They certainly didn't offer us any compensation. The breakfast was unimpressive, even compared to other unimpressive continental breakfasts. I bet most folks would have a slightly better experience, since they wouldn't stay in the cold shower room. But we're giving it a 3. It was okay. Nothing was wrong except for the cold shower, but we didn't experience a lot of the aspects folks were raving about in the other reviews, either. read more

By far one of the most friendliest motels I stayed in. If all business owners were more like David and Elena, we would establish world peace in matter of days. My experience and observation - Amazing customer service - Motel is very well-kept - Cozy room with excellent heaters - Swimming pool and Jacuzzi - Complimentary chips & salsa (this won me over) - Home to the world's largest chile displayed outside of the lobby. If that doesn't put a smile on your face driving in to the motel, you just might be a lost soul. Funny story - After checking in, David asked if I would like some chips & salsa brought to my room. I was tired and hungry from a long day of driving and was delighted by his offer. I commented about how fresh the salsa would be since his motel is the home to the world's largest chile, plus I was in New Mexico after all. Just had an excellent stay here during my journey from LA to Dallas. After seeing all the great reviews, I decided to give this place a chance -- and I am glad I did! The hotel staff was so warm and accommodating, happily greeting us and walking us personally to our room. They also brought us complimentary chips and salsa and a beverage upon arrival, which we enjoyed in the patio garden; the gazebo next to the koi pond was such a fun, relaxing spot to unwind after a long day of driving. The room itself was very clean and welcoming. The decor of the room and the entire hotel is a little funky, which we loved. There's lots of unique art to enjoy, and of course you can't miss the giant chili pepper! No in-room hair dryer, but that's nothing major. Breakfast in the morning was cereal, bagels, coffee and juice, which worked fine for us. This place has definitely become my go-to spot for my cross country drives, and I can't wait to recommend it to family and friends passing through. The quality and price can't be beat. Spring,summer and fall I'm Mr.Trucker.This is one of my favorite little places to stay whenever I have some down time in southern New Mexico.If you like the road less traveled then you'll probably like this place. A nice little poetic song somewhere backstage of the big road, Interstate 10.My last visit there was the aftermath of a vicious winter storm that wiped most of the beautiful landscaping the owner obviously spent many hours maintaining.There are at least two nice clean BBQ grills for chillin' and grilling' outside in the garden.Out front was the steel rebar structure of what will be the worlds largest chile!The garden and lobby are filled with a lot of quirky little pieces of art and craftwork.The rooms I've had had kingsize beds,microwave ovens and refrigerators plus full wall covering mirrors that could make some people uncomfortable (if they can't stand the sight of themselves!). An adequate little waffle and cereal buffet in the lobby to compliment morning coffee.A grand piano on one side of the spacious lobby.A computer area on the other.Interesting and intelligent people to meet.Very reasonably priced.I just hope I can find other places like this one.A bit of serendipity. read more

I have traveled quite a bit and have never had such a disgusting experience as I did at this hotel. Literally walk in to the smell of excrement which turns out happened because there was in fact feces left in a toilet that had been there so long that it had left a poop soup that had filmed over and grown a layer of mold. There was hair on the nightstand and water damaged, exposed drywall. It was like something from the "before" episode of Hotel Nightmares. The night manager offered another room however this one still looked dirty and didn't even come with a curtain! I was absolutely done at this point and left to find a different and more hygienic room. How they obtained a 4 Star is a mystery to me! Just a big pile of nope. read more
