The Big Dipper is such a fun ice cream spot and easily one of my favorite places in Missoula. It's a walk-up window with lots of picnic tables, so it's a great place to hang out on a nice day. The line can get long, but it moves quickly, and you get a perfect view of the mountains from the tables while you wait or eat. They serve cones, cups, shakes, and even pints and quarts to take home. The flavors are incredible, especially their seasonal and rotating specials. The huckleberry is my favorite ever, and the white mint Oreo is phenomenal and super unique. It also makes an amazing shake. Parking in the lot can be a little tight, but there's plenty of street parking if you don't mind a short walk. This place is just awesome. This cool little ice cream shop was such a great place to run into. At 76° outside nothing feels better than to hold you down with a nice delicious ice cream. They offer for picnic tables right outside this establishment. Which makes it better because then you can sit down and enjoy not only the ice cream but the perfect view the mountain just crossed from the big dipper ice cream sign. The pistachio ice cream was a bit of a disappointment to me, as I was expecting something more like pistachio ice cream in India, but this wasn't much milder in flavor and more artificial tasting. My party of 10 (2 families of 5) visited this ice cream shop on a Sunday evening close to 9pm. We were intimidated at first, noticing how long the line was when we arrived. The parking lot is very small, so you may need to find street parking which is what we did. Seating is all outdoors, which adds to the charm. Despite long lines, they moved quickly with two cashiers taking orders. Reviews mentioned that cashiers take your name for orders, but mine didn't. Each item comes out separately and not necessarily in the order placed. I only noticed one name being called while we waited. All other orders were called by the item. Super nice service and generous scoop sizes! They have more "classic" flavors compared to something like Sweet Peaks, but still hold it down with their own rotating menu. It's just a walk-up window on the left side and you get your ice cream on the right side. One thing that I know: when in Montana and the PNW, get huckleberry. You can try different flavors before you commit and I tried and liked the huckleberry so I got a cone of that ($3.50). They also have a sugar cone, a plain cone, and a homemade waffle cone. It was a pretty big scoop of ice cream and it was melting so I asked to get a cup to hold it. If you're going on a warm day, this will cool you off but make sure you eat it quickly before the deliciousness melts away! read more

I used to love this place, it was a must try and a place I took every out of town guest. But lately I've been so disappointed with the service and attitude of the employees. I get everyone is on edge... but that isn't any reason to be rude and hard to work with. Today's issues: 1. the girl at the window was wearing a mask, well sort of..... She had it over her mouth, but not her nose, which defeats the purpose. She also kept touching it, and not washing her hands. SHE HANDLES THE PUBLIC'S FOOD. 2. They aren't doing any samples, while strange (it's not like they reuse the sample spoons) some of the flavors are very.... unique and it seems like a big leap to ask people to pay gourmet ice cream prices if they can't even try it. But, hey we are living in strange times so if that was it I would roll with it and be fine.... It wasn't READ ON FRIENDS READ ON. 3. I have an allergy and eat vegan to be safe. The server couldn't tell me what the base of the vegan rotating flavor was (by law they have to keep an ingredient list on hand). Her answer after all of this was "well do you want it or not?!" 4. Rude.... asking me if I want something or not after you can't (or wont) tell me whats in it is uncalled for, and frankly dangerous. I get we are all on edge and times are tough. But really?? I don't want to die for supporting your business, and now I regret even attempting to support you. 5. Now you don't take cash.... for ice cream.... seriously? But not to worry, cash is still safe enough to accept as TIPS There are other specialty local ice cream places in Missoula (cough Sweet Peaks, cough), while I tended to like your flavors better, they are more polite and have a better atmosphere.
