Heard this was THE place to get ice cream in Missoula. Tried to go to the OG location but the line was insane. Seems a little silly they only have 1 person doing the cash register. We found the second location, which was dead. The ice cream was OK but nothing special. Flavor was lacking and small scoops for the price. The staff was not great either... maybe the hype is from the OG spot. Id give it a try but definitly come earlier to avoid the line. read more

This location just opened up yesterday, and is the second Big Dipper in Missoula, and the fourth in Montana. They are located in the same shopping center as the Southgate Mall, making it very convenient for those in the area. All locals, and even those who aren't local to Missoula have heard of Big Dipper Ice Cream. There's just something about it that is so satisfying and delicious! They have several flavors, and offer many seasonal flavors throughout the year. My favorites are the Huckleberry and White Mint Oreo. On their menu you can find sundaes, shakes, ice cream by the pint or quart, and a variety of toppings. Okay, so how is this particular location? Well since it just opened yesterday, the shop is brand spankin' new and has lots of seating both inside and outdoors. When we arrived, there was nobody in line and we were immediately helped. The staff was very friendly, but it was a little hard to hear what they were saying since there was a layer of clear plastic between us and they were all wearing masks (thanks Covid-19). Our orders were spot on, though and we had paid and were outside in the seating area in a snap. What I love about this location is that there is plenty of room to sit inside, which the other location does not offer. Given the unpredictable Montana weather we live in, that bumped them up to 5 stars. While their Higgins Street location will always be the original Big Dipper, this one certainly has everything to offer! read more

Only in town on occasion, and just love Freddy's frozen custard, but tonight they closed early due to a labor shortage. So, had to go to Big Dipper for the first time. Was absolutely not impressed one bit. I had the Oreo White Mint and El Salvador Coffee. The coffee was nearly flavorless. Just the slightest hint of coffee flavor. The mint was not that good. Just tossed it because it wasn't worth the calories for tasteless ice cream. My daughter in law who lives here said this is her least favorite ice cream. I agree. Two stars are for the two very nice employees that served me. read more

Great little place! Huge servings, great service, and yummy flavors. We had the stracciatella and it was to die for! Boys had sprinkles and it was proper sprinkles--top to bottom. The ice cream isn't rock hard too. They were so excited. Thanks! read more

We typically have good service but tonight 10/20/22 25 minutes prior to closing the girl working rudely refused to make a milkshake as they had already closed everything down. They served my children then abruptly locked the doors and then refused a whole car load of teenagers walking in. Just be warned if you go close to closing time. read more

Went to this location this evening before the fireworks show (4th of July)....it was a long wait but so worth it! These ladies worked together like a well oiled machine! One of my top all time favorite ice scream shops. Their huckleberry is the best in the state. Salted Carmel is slow second. I stop as much as I can when I'm in town. Their second location never has a line either. 11/10 recommend. read more

Overall experience was unacceptable. Went in today to grab some ice cream as it's hot out. I ordered a double scoop (cup size) (2 cups) and I asked can I get a bigger cup with double scoop so it doesn't melt since I had a 6 min drive. She tells me that there's upgrade charge for that. Doesn't make sense! Then when I asked for 2 spoons, she's like it's .25 per spoon. Since when? While I drove the ice melted all over my car seat. Big Dipper was my to go place but not any more. I really wish I could give this a higher rating but the most important part of an ice cream place is the ice cream. It was just not flavorful... I ordered the Java chip which was extremely bland with not a hint of coffee flavor (which is why I ordered it as I LOVE coffee ice cream) and my husband ordered the Irish brownie which tasted nothing like brownie which is the main reason he ordered it. The girl running the place was kind and the serving size was great and the price was good for what we got which all adds up to what should be a five star review... but then we actually ate the product and were sadly disappointed. There are two big dippers in missoula. I always choose this one. The other one is always packed during summertime or whenever we go. This one you can actually go inside and they always make your ice cream quick and convienent. Definitely recommend. Also wide variety of flavors of ice cream. read more
