Had lunch at Big Grove Brewery today 9/23/23. My wife and I split an order of their chili cheese fries, and a white cheddar cheesesteak sandwich. The quality of the food was very good. The chili cheese fries were better than what you would typically expect, the chili was good and seemed to be made from scratch, not plopped out of a can. The cheddar cheesesteak was delicious, but I was disappointed with the pricing. The sandwich itself was very small and the the amount of "steak" even smaller. It's priced at $18.50 but should be more in the 12-15 dollar range. The service was adequate. Nothing to rave about, but nothing to complain about. This is a pretty cool place. New, clean, fresh. Had an appetizer and beer with my brother who was in town visiting. We got there about an hour before closing time. It took a little bit of time to be seated. After asking the bartender if we were supposed to seat ourselves. He found the host. We sat outside on the patio. The ambience was great. Wait staff was attentive. Beer and appetizer was great. Food was as expected, bar food, but more expensive than it should be. Food gets 3 stars. Ambiance is good, open atmosphere with lots of large TVs. Ambiance gets 4 stars Service gets two stars. Service makes or breaks a place. Service was well below what I expect, even at a bar. Our table of four had separate tickets and we later found double charges appearing on the bill. Slow response to requests for condiments, napkins, silverware and drink refills. It wasn't that busy, just seemingly lackluster service. We won't be back anytime soon. read more

I recently moved to DSM from New York and was quite impressed by the paneer curry with chicken! It was delicious with a tiny bit of a kick but I'm very sensitive to spice and was able to tolerate it fine! The Mac n cheese was extremely spicy though so beware of that. Great variety of amazing beers and the food menu includes great vegetarian options. They even had a tuna poke bowl that wasn't bad although not the best I've had. This place us Nothing special. Burgers are over priced and beer selection was limited the night we were there. If you have any sort of food allergy or sensitivity you will want to skip this establishment. The outside dining was nice if you have a dog. Service was ok. We are BIG Big Grove fans - we love the OG in Solon and the IC Taphouse. When I'm Des Moines this weekend visiting family we had to try the newest location - let me tell you it did NOT disappoint! The fried chicken bao buns were phenomenal - as was the sweet corn dip. Loved the numerous lagers/ light beers available at this location and wish we had access to these beers in the Eastern IA locations! The pretzel and beer cheese here is the best pretzel I have ever had in my life. The Mac and cheese is also so delicious. The ambiance here is amazing, especially for watching sports. Big Grove Brewery is a great addition to Downtown Des Moines. My family and I love to bike the trails throughout Des Moines metro and Big Grove is very near to the bike path with tons of bicycle parking. There is also a large parking lot if you drive downtown. The outdoor patio is inviting and has the perfect backdrop of Downtown Des Moines. The food and drinks are great. I really enjoyed the Bad Hunter Board and the Mediterranean Sabich Wrap. The servings are large and the presentation is spot on. If you are a beer drinker, you'll love the free samples. There is also a full bar for specialty drinks if you prefer. Stopped in for a casual pint on my own, on a Thursday at 6pm. Upscale sort of place but also casual. Very clean, long tap line of their own brews. Tried the Jonwicks Irish Ale and it was excellent (and I've brewed beer for many years). Food was a little pricey though. $6 for a pint, $13 for a hamburger, $16.75 for a tuna poke bowl. Been to every BGB location. It's a great place to hangout and have some drinks. 5 stars for the service, atmosphere, and drinks. 3 stars for the food. I've tried to like the Korean BBQ chicken sandwich and I just can't. The chicken is cooked perfectly it's the sauce that ruins it for me. Maybe try the Buffalo sauce next time. I would highly recommend the Big Grove Brewery in downtown Des Moines. The beer is great, I haven't had a bad beer here, I would recommend the Royal Eddy, but all of the beers have been good. The food is good, nothing spectacular but goes well with the beers, and the beers are spectacular. The staff is always friendly and very attentive. Big Grove, love ya but the service has never been good there. My first visit was in March 2023 and the server was awesome. Helped with beer selection and just very good. Located on Ingersoll in a former car dealership building, Big Grove Brewery is a second location in the state with the original in Iowa City. Aesthetically appealing but a little loud, it is an appealing venue. The beer selection is broad with small beers (7 oz.) and a larger size. The food is fine but not outstanding ("better than average for bar food") according to my companion. My burger was mediocre (Bebop's is better) but the fries were very good (crispy). My companion got some sort of rabbit food (salad) which was decent. read more
