I stopped by here early on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner. There was a decent crowd, but plenty of seating. I found myself a spot across from a tv so that I could watch some Olympic hockey. Very attentive but not intrusive staff. When I finished one drink or my food, my glass/plate were swiftly whisked away. The tiny Guinness shot was adorable, and honestly worth the money for the selfie opportunity alone. I also had their lamb burger with fries, which was quite good as well. They had plenty of pub favorites on the menu, but if I stopped by again, I would probably still get the lamb. Dinner at the Royal Mile before a show. The Fish and Chips were recommended and decided to give it a try. The fish is very good flaky cod and the ends were crispy and good. The center was very oily and the breading fell off. I feel is they did smaller pieces it would be better. I like crispy, flaky, with minimal grease. I want the breading to stay with the fish and this just didn't check those boxes. It just wasn't the best I have had, good, but not great. Comparing to The Bank in Ireland it just didn't hit. For an English Place I really wish they also had traditional mushy peas which are fantastic. The French Fries were just Ok. The place wasn't very busy and the service was good. I got the fish and chips with a side of the poutine gravy and OMG it was so delicious Thus the lack of food pictures. It was busy but the waitstaff was still attentive making sure we got refills and anything else we needed. They had a lot of televisions over the bar so it was easy to watch the soccer game. read more

We came here right after lunch so I cannot rate the food. But service was excellent at the bar and we each had a couple drinks. Royal Mile is unique and possibly the only British pub is Des Moines. Everything inside and out (except the bartenders) looked 100 years old. Very authentic and the bar dinks menus vouch for that. My black and tan was different from what I'm used to (Guinness and Fullers ESB vs Guinness and Harp) but I loved it all the same. The Sam Smith cider on tap was a treat as well. The draft list is heavy on English beer and ale but there are quite a few surprises too. And if you like scotch, this is your place. read more

Stopped in here for a quick bite with a friend as I was lodged in Des Moines for a few days. It's a solid British pub in the middle of downtown and they have done their best to bring that atmosphere over. Real football on TV for example. Beers local and abroad. At this point I don't remember exactly what I ordered, but what stood out to me is Brittania: Large portions, solid on flavor, nothing exotic. Arrived quickly, friendly service, fair prices. The Royal Mile is in contention for the top food spot in the Des Moines metro area - have had nearly the entire menu and not once have I been disappointed. The service is quick, concise, with enough personality to warrant a return. The drink selection is a thorough yet not exhaustive list. But, the menu is where the spot shines best. Although there isn't perhaps much selection, this is ideal as each option offered is served near perfectly. Still, there is certainly an item for everyone. The location is great, the atmosphere is lowkey, cozy, and inviting - again, this is one of the best food spots in DSM. We were in Des Monies for the Des Monies Con. We were going to go to the Hessen Haus but they were very busy. So we walked down to the Royal Mile. We had never been before and wanted to give it a try. It was a cute little place. The server was very nice and friendly. It was a little busy which we understood. My husband had got the scotch egg for an appetizer and I got the fried pickles. They were ok. I am not a sausage person but the mustard was good! I ordered the fish and chips which was really big but wasn't crunchy enough for it being fried. When we bit into it was soggy/wet and the chips/fries were cold. We also got the steak and Guinness pie. That wasn't too bad but was more veggies and not a lot of meat. From the time we sat down to the time we left was a little over 2 hours (not something we wanted for time wise, we still had to drive 2 hours home). Sadly for the price of dinner I wasn't too impressed and unfortunately we won't be going there again. read more

Great service, but to be more English, the beer really shouldn't be ice cold on tap. Great place for brunch! They even have a private covered patio section where dogs are allowed too. So we got the perfect brunch right after an event at Cowel Commons. I got the English breakfast which was a sausage, baked beans, bacon, eggs, toast, and sautéed mushrooms with tomato's. The baked beans are different from traditional southern beans it is more of a light tomato based and on the semi sweet side. It was a good pair with the sausage and bacon to give it a taste of sweet and salty. The only con is the tomato and mushroom, i think it's canned mushrooms sautéed with tomatoes. The mushrooms were a bit rubbery, which makes me think it was canned. Another con would be the OJ that was definitely premade like Tropicana, but also can be expected as it is a pub. So no worries. The eggs were made perfectly, and the toast as well. I would still get this breakfast, since it was still delicious. My husband got the Corned Beef Hash. The corned beef was perfectly pickled and cooked, tender and savory, the potatoes were crispy on the outside and tender soft on the inside. And again the eggs were perfect cooked too. I am not sure what I haven't tried this place sooner for lunch!! I was there on my lunch break around 11:30am and it wasn't too busy at all. There was one server on the floor and a bartender who assisted her. You sit yourself. The ambiance was very peaceful, not noisy like a lot of restaurants during the busy lunch hour. Our server was great! Since it was our first time, she helped us decide between two options we were considering. I tried the turkey club and it was amazing! The flavors went so well together. I have to give Royal Mile a 5 star review because everything was delicious. We started off with the poutine and just look at that cheese pull. Great gravy on all the dishes. I got the Ruben, best I've had in Des Moines with thick strips of corned beef and soft rye bread. My boyfriend got the steak and Guinness pie and, although he stated he was full 3 times, he needed to finish it because it was so good. I had a cider and he had a porter. What a unique experience. Feeling adventurous we stopped in here before a show at the Civic Center. It's within walking distance. If you want to feel like you are in a London Pub this is a great place. We decided to try a whiskey sampling. Oh that was a brave choice as the whiskey was kicking and unique. We also got a order of fries pickles and Rueben rolls to share. The flight of whiskey was so different but we really got a kick out of it. Love the unique atmosphere of this pub! They have some many delicious drinks including my favorite Lindemans Framboise. Not super easy to find in Iowa. The servers were awesome and attentive. Went here a few days ago for a date night. I wasn't too sure what to expect since I had never been to an English bar before. I liked the ambiance of the place. It was very muted and decorated in a way that I feel a British pub would be decorated. I went on the safer side and just got the chicken sandwich. It did however have a mustard sauce on the sandwich that kind of reminded me of mustard mixed with mayonnaise. I really enjoyed it! I topped it off with ketchup as well. I am not usually a fan of beer battered things but I was pleasantly surprised at the sandwich. It was definitely different compared to other sandwiches I had tried at other places. For my side I got Mac n cheese and I was a little disappointed because it kind of just tasted like those microwave Mac n cheese that you get at the store. It was just liquidy and didn't have much flavor to it. But that's my only critique! The service was great! Our waitress was really friendly and personable. And the bartender made sure to check up on us as well! I do wish that they had more sours to choose from since I'm not much of a beer drinker but the sour they provided was decent. Interesting little pub....the first thing that hits you is the smell of old fryer oil. I was put off but carried on. I ordered the Iowa pork tenderloin sandwich with shoestring fries and both were very good. Crispy tenderloin and crispy fries. Win win. I asked for a little cup of ranch and it was authentic house made delicious! I'd order a salad with a pork tenderloin topper and ranch! That'd be the bomb! Royal Mile always opens up on the holidays for those of us who can't stand to be around our families for more than a few hours at a time -- and for that I'm always thankful! They open up earlier than any other bar on Court Ave on Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is definitely noticed and appreciated!
