First off, I am from Sinaloa, born and raised, and now live in California. I know what real Mexican food should taste like. Hands down, the quesabirria tacos and flautas are as good as they come--absolutely amazing. We happened upon this place on Yelp, and I was a little skeptical, but after the first bite, I felt transported back to Mexico. My entire family agreed that these are the best quesabirria tacos we have had outside of Mexico, and possibly even in Mexico. The flavors were amazing, and the consommé was absolutely delicious. We are regulars on the Big Island and normally do not eat Mexican food because we have never found a good spot, with the exception of Shaka Tacos. This place was really busy, and there was only one person working. She was doing it all--taking orders, collecting money, and making all the delicious food. She was never rude and was so pleasant. She said the cooks had called in and she was the only one there. Talk about dedication! She made sure everyone got their food, and it was made perfectly. I cannot commend her enough for all the work she did and for putting out an outstanding order of food. She is a real gem and should be treated as such! It is so hard to find good employees today, and her dedication and attitude inspired me. I wish we had gotten her name, but she said she is always there. If the food takes longer than you like, just be patient, because you are in for a treat when it comes out. Good food takes time, and the food is definitely worth the wait. We will definitely be coming back every time we are here. This place is a real gem. If I could give it more stars, I would. Really good spot leaving from the falls, we stopped in for lunch and had no wait - it was right when they opened. Just two people working and they were both friendly. Food was made fresh and took about 10 minutes! It was a lot of food too. I would've liked more cilantro and lime for the tacos, and maybe a bit more salt in the beans and rice, but overall it was great. The drink was our favorite! This is one of the only food options in Honomu and is a really convenient spot to have lunch on the way to or from Akaka Falls. It's all parallel parking and it gets busyyyy due to its convenience and deliciousness. It took awhile to get our food due to the crowd but there's picnic benches outside you can sit on which are comfortable, if on the warm side. There's tables inside too if that's more your speed. Not a good place to stop if you're in a big hurry, based on our experience. They were out of nachos when we went so we got the sampler and the burrito. The burrito is MASSIVE and probably shareable. The chipotle crema they put on the top is smooth and flavorful. The whole burrito is packed with ingredients - very cheesy and with lots of meat. My husband liked some of his birria sampler better than others - he liked the tacos the best. So maybe go that route if you're undecided? read more

I have tried as many Mexican trucks/restaurants as I could find on the Big Island in the 4 1/2 years we have lived here. I have yet to find one that compares to good Mexican food in California, until Birria Boss. My Daughter-in-law, who is Mexican, found Birria Boss and I am super happy she did. This is now my go to place anytime I am in the Hilo area. Do yourself a favor and stop in for the Birria Ramen, Birria tacos, pastor tacos, as good as any you will find in California. My family has been on the Big Island for going on two weeks, and I'd say this was by far the best meal I've had here so far, but in reality, it's one of the best things I've eaten EVER. We are a foodie family and I swear we will come back to this island just to have these tacos again. We ordered the Al Pastor, the Carne Asada, and two plain Ala carte Chicken Tinga tacos (for a picky little kid). As you can see from the pics, the platters are heavy and huge for $16. Ala carte were $4 each. They were hot and saucy and freakin' DELICIOUS! The whole thing after tip was $51 and worth every penny. Damn, I wish we weren't staying in Kona! If you are heading to Hilo or Akaka Falls, you HAVE to make it your priority to stop at Birria Boss. Check their hours first. It will blow your mind! My favorite was the Al Pastor best and my husband liked the Carne Asada best. We both tried a bite of the Chicken Tinga and agreed it was also delicious. Even the picky kid loved it. You can't go wrong with any of them. And, to the management - I reported the one star review from "anonymous D". Not only are fake profiles not allowed, but dropping several f-bombs isn't either. Judging from the fact that Mr Anonymous had only made one review ever, I suspect he is someone you know who had a personal beef with you for whatever reason and didn't actually try your food. O. M. GEEEE!!! We went twice in three days. Not only does this place have the BEST Horchata ever, but the Birria is perfection. The consommé is velvety, and the spice level is delightful. Tip: check out the cute little shop next door while you wait for your food. We tried the flautas and a side order of the birria tacos. I preferred the flautas; they had a better flavor profile. Food was amazing! Being up by Akaka Falls, the last thing one would expect is a great birria place like this! Ordered 3 birria tacos with the consome on the side and an horchata. The food is authentic to its Mexican origin. The horchata is properly made with rice, milk, and cinnamon sticks. ALOHA!!! My family came to the island on vacation from Arizona. My parents zip lined in Hilo and we were recommended to eat here, it did not disappoint. From the moment you walk in the customer service is AMAZING. They cater to allergies as well ! My mom has a gluten and soy allergy, they pointed her in the right direction of what to eat. Ordered the Chicken Tinga Tostada and all we got was chicken with an onion/tomato salad over a tostada shell. No rice or lettuce. I couldn't eat it.... all those onions, why? Gross. Also ordered a burrito plate and although I asked for chicken it was full of beef, which I couldn't eat either. Then on the side was an onion salad (omg no) and rice. Not only was the order wrong, there wasn't anything inside the burrito besides the beef. There was supposed to be veggies, cheese, chipotle cream, and consome. We got none of that. I love, love Big Island Birria Boss. I have joked with the owners about being their stalker, but it's not really a joke. I do stalk them. Moving here from San Diego, I miss good taco shops and good Mexican food. Birria Boss has filled that void for me. They are based out of Hilo and frequently make an appearance in Kona and Waikoloa. When they do come to the west side, you will often find me to be one of the first in line. Their tacos are ridiculously good. The birria tastes like it has been braised for days. At first $20 seemed like a lot for a taco plate, but Miguel is so generous with the amount of food he serves, that it is more than worth it. We have figured out that the best way to order is to order the plate with several extra tacos. We eat a few right away and then save the extras to warm up later. I came in yesterday (saturday) to get my usual, taco plate with pork. The pork was dry and salty. The consome and rice taste a little burnt. I came back today (sunday) and ordered my usual again, but this time the food was amazing. Pork was soft and juicy not salty. Rice was cooked to perfection and consume was nice and hot. The front worker Sharice has really good customer service and very very sweet. I got introduced to the cooks and was able to tell them about how good the food was today. Wanted to check out this place for awhile now. Decided to drop by after a visit to Kolokole Park. Barria Boss is located in the little village near Akaka Falls. Being a Sunday, I thought it would either be closed or quiet. I was wrong on both fronts. Not only was it open but it was very very busy. The girl behind the counter was working her butt off. Taking orders, taking out orders, preparing to go orders, making drinks, being the cashier and all with a smile and never breaking a sweat. She deserves a raise. The guys in the kitchen were hard at work as well. The tables inside and out were almost full. I ordered 2 birria tacos and 2 carne asada street tacos. I was given a little beeper to let me know when my order was ready. The only downside was the wait. It took what felt like forever. At least 20 minutes if not more. However, seeing how busy they were and how hard everyone was working, I didn't mind. When my order was ready, I picked up my tacos and headed to my car to enjoy them with my partner who had been patiently waiting with our dog. I have to say, the tacos were worth the wait. Quite delicious. I wanted more! I'll order the combo plate with rice and beans next time. The only minor disappointment was that they don't make their own red hot sauce. I love a good homemade hot sauce. The Good: Delicious tacos and a menu with enough options to try different items every visit. Went back for lunch again. Big Island Birria Boss does not disappoint. It is by far the best Mexican food on the island, or in Hawaii nae. It can hold its own withe the best Mexican restaurants in California or Baja. The food portions are very generous. The flavors are perfect. The staff are all helpful, efficient and welcoming. We had to try the tacos from here. We loved the birria tacos and potato tacos. The potato tacos were actually my favorite. The potato mix has a great garlicky taste. FYI - The carne asada tacos are more like a beef stew with a chili sauce kind of like "carne con chile" for all the Latin customers. You order at counter and then pick them up when ready.
