The service was great and food came out pretty fast! It is rare these days that they offer you a complimentary chip and salsa which were really good. I ordered Enchiladas plate (one chicken and one beef). The serving size was very generous. The chicken enchilada was really good but didn't care for the beef one. It was tough and under seasoned. Rice and beans are on the spot. Overall good lunch! It looks like a great local lunch spot - didn't see any tourists. read more

We have been to the original Luquins over 8 years ago - which sadly burned down we were told. We were told they had two now so we picked the one we were closest to. Our server was very nice and the restaurant is very roomy with a sports bar and place to enjoy the games of the day. The chips and salsa were as I remembered- homemade and crunchy chips and fresh tasty salsa!! The carnitas flautas was well seasoned and crispy as it should be - win win! Which of course - you got it - meant the carnitas burrito was delicious and my husband loves their red sauce! The steak flautas is what brought this down to a 4. The steak was a little bland and kind of chewy. The onions were not cooked enough in my opinion but if you like raw onion then you will be fine. The beans were delicious and how we remembered them! The onions in both the flautas were too raw and we don't recall onions in the description when looking at the menu. If it's there, we apologize - but they do need to be cooked more for those of us that like cooked onions not raw. All in all so happy they are still in business and we got to enjoy some of our favorite items!! Def give them a try!! read more

We visited Hilo a couple years ago and food was great, service was okay. My wife and I came back with some friends who were also visiting. We were all put off a bit when we arrived, we could smell marijuana and as we were getting out from our cars we saw some of the employees smoking. Not the best impression and kind of ghetto. The hostess was nice and took us to our table immediately where we were given complimentary salsa and chips. Our server Jordan was very welcoming and catered to our every need. Food was delicious and margaritas were good and very strong. We plan on coming back again. Hopefully something is done about the marijuana by then. read more

I always stop here for lunch when I'm doing my shopping midweek in Hilo. I love the family friendly atmosphere, the menu and the margaritas. Their food is fresh. The complementary chips and salsa are made in house, as are all of the sauces. A couple of my go to's, just some of the many options, are the shredded beef, enchiladas with green sauce, and the nachos that are big enough to share. It's a well frequented by locals. I usually sit at the bar, and Nina is always awesome, making everyone feel welcome and comfortable while mixing margs of many flavors. I have had great experiences with servers (when I don't sit at the bar, as it's also a good for meeting friends and family) and even kitchen staff seems friendly. Good food, full bar, clean restrooms, good parking, nice people, almost always open and it's near downtown. Winner, winner, go get dinner. Or lunch. Or drinks. Literally just finished eating lunch at Luquin's 454 in Hilo and loved it! Sorry, no photos! Our server, Kathleen, was awesome, attentive, and quick, chips and salsa great, and all of our food was delicious. I had the Picado with steak, which was tasty. The accompanying beans and rice are really good, too. My friends had shredded beef tacos, taco salad, and cheese enchiladas, and they said everything was delicious. Nice place, has a large sitting area to enjoy your dinner etc and also have a bar to the side and another area for larger parties. The food was Mexican but flavors have adjusted to suite maybe the white people who come here. Is it 100% authentic, NO, but some of the items did taste authentic and others no. It like was a 60/40 I say for this plate but I'm not sure about other plates. It's hard to find real authentic Mexican food in Hilo if that is what you're aiming for. I'm Not surprised but would be awesome to have choices and change it up here and there. Service was very kind and respectful and quick. A1 for service and friendliness. First off I wanna say the waitresses we had today had a very poor attitude. Far from welcoming. I mean we're paying costumers who should feel appreciated being that we're paying costumers. Isn't that what costumers service is about? To second that, I'm the person that had a problem that was shortly resolved right afterwards so I don't know why it's being brought up again. And it wasn't with a girl fyi. It was a disagreement with the bar tender which was a male. Get your facts straight if you're gonna come at me come correct. How unprofessional of you. This just goes to show that you guys were treating us with disrespect and attitude from the last situation. Another unprofessional move on your part. Walked in and placed our order at the front desk, it literally took one full hour to get our food while we stood at the entrance. I could see the front desk people trying to put pressure to get our order, I could tell they were uncomfortable with how long our order took. We went in at 3pm. All persons in the party need to be there to be seated. It was a full house throughout our time, with steady flow of people coming in to dine. The music that was playing over speakers was at a nice volume. Perfect enough to have conversations. Thankful for complementary chips and salsa and additional order of chips with guac. Our food took a little longer than usual. It was okay, we did not mind as we had drinks to hold us until our food came. There were a lot of people at that time, so a little wait was expected. Food was very similar to Pahoa location. Kudos for consistency. The refried beans are the best! We enjoyed our meals with nothing to take home. Bartender withe ring in her nose ,,, Laura I think was her name ,,,, totally rude and unprofessional,,,,,, wife and I were ignored for 10 minutes at bar ,,,, had to flag her down for drinks ,,,, then when I asked about ordering food to eat she acted like it wasn't her job to take order even though 3 stools down some guy ordered his lunch. Arrived at 5:30pm on a busy Friday night and only had to wait 25 minutes for a table for 6. We were sat down on a large enough table for all of us and our order was taken promptly. We were given 4 baskets of chips and salsa while we waited but our dinner was served shortly after. We ordered a variety of items on the menu and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. I personally ordered the steak fajitas and a margarita with a li hing mui rim and both were delicious. The staff were all very nice and attentive. I guess the TVs are just decoration. Went for lunch. Wasn't busy and bartender was friendly and got my food out very quickly. Asked if I could watch the football game but he didn't know how to find the game. He let me try but I think the remote needed batteries. No luck. No batteries. The fresh chips and salsa were full of flavor and were not from a can/bag. The food was delicious, portions were generous, and they had a great drink selection. They had two NA beers and had many vegetarian options. If you ask for it they have a delicious house diablo hot sauce that is delicious! The server was very kind and accommodating. Food is fantastic, my absolute favorite place to eat. We usually head down to the restaurant in Pahoa, but.... They came up our way! YAY! Service... not sure why there was anything negative said by others, these girls bust their cute little selves getting their customers served. Dealing with people can be an art form at times, and I have never had a negative moment at either restaurant. This will be a permanent stomping ground for my husband and I. Ambiance, I love the warm and welcoming feel of this place. Wonderful people, food and atmosphere, you can't ask for much more. We've been waiting a long time for this to open, and love Mexican food. I was excited to visit this weekend but unfortunately our visit didn't go so well. First of all, the space renovation is fantastic. Huge space, huge bar, nice appearance. We were seated immediately, so that was good. Service, however, was not. It took an hour to receive our food. I'm going to chalk that up to new opening problems, but it really was excessive. You only get one serving of chips and salsa and I refused to pay $5 per small basket for more so I had some hungry grumpy children on my hands. The food and drinks...average to not so good. House margaritas were large but very cheap mix and cheap tequila. I didn't think the salsa was great.. it was not spicy and very oniony. On my combination plate the rice and beans and enchilada were fine. The Chile relleno tasted very bad. Almost like rancid oil. The nachos and burritos were fine, nothing to write home about. We would have ordered dessert, but the servers never came and I didn't want to wait another hour. Final note: I wish they would keep the entertainment family-appropriate. They were playing extremely suggestive music videos in the middle of the day and it made my kids uncomfortable. I'm not sure Luquin's has anything to offer above other local Mexican places. Love Luquins. On this friday before Cinco de Mayo we decided for lunch at 454 Luquins. We took a seat at the long bar that reminds us of the Luquin's original bar in Pahoa. Only 4 people seated at the bar, yet somehow the barkeep couldn't find the time to serve up our two dishes, we watched sitting on the cooks counter. You know what happens when a cheese enchilada sits too long under the heat lamp? We do. Cheese burns, enchilada shrinks! It doesn't do Luquin's wonderful tomato sauce any good either. No, we're too layed back and besides the barkeep appeared stressed to say anything. The beer was cold, the taco and beans, the Luquins we've come to love. I'll make one other comment, respectfully.
