Super kind and welcoming staff -- very sweet to my kids and accommodating for overly tired toddlers. Quick service and food is delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also clean bathrooms!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Wish they were in Waimea!

We were starving after making a day trip to Hilo to visit the hot springs in Pohoiki. After a long day of driving, I was craving comfort food. Being from LA, I saw this place and immediately wanted to see if it was good Mexican food. My boyfriend got the carnitas plate and I got the carne asada tacos. Service was great and so fast! We shared a chicken tortilla soup as an appetizer and churros for dessert. The food was so delicioso! The meats were tender, juicy, and authentic in flavor. Portions were so big! I do wish the tacos were served more traditionally (cilantro and onions not coleslaw). The chicken tortilla soup had some spice to it but it reminded me of the yummy sopita de pollo back home. We also enjoyed a mojito and margarita with our chips and salsa. But those drinks were soooo strong! Good thing we had plenty of food to not drink on an empty stomach. The churros were just perfect--crispy, cinnamon, sweet! Best Mexican food on island hands down! Definitely coming back for the good vibes and yummy food.

What a little gem of a Mexican restaurant in Pahoa! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's in an unassuming spot in a strip mall but I was wildly impressed once we got in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The artwork is so clean and vibrant. You can tell a lot of effort was put in the space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The Moscow mule and margaritas were so tasty and well-balanced. The flautas were GREAT; I could have eaten three more plates of those. Chicken enchiladas were sooo good, the cheese sauce on top was a great twist from the enchilada sauce I'm used to. Everything was full of flavor and brought me so much satisfaction. I would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area again! [[HIGHLIGHT]]My only wish is that there were more decorations to make it feel even cozier - maybe plants or something![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Hilo Location, Excellent Mexican food From fresh homemade salsa and chips to the cocktails, this is one of the better places in all of Hawaii for Mexican food. Recommend family style Big Puna Plate, Santa Fe BBQ chicken salad, and Carnitas Burrito. It will serve 3-4 people. Don't forget the cocktails. Enjoy

Delicious fish and shrimp tacos and a super cute vibe! Our kids loved the keiki menu: kids' burritos and generous portions of rice and beans for $7. We loved the cocktail menu: ranging from $10-12, there's a great assortment of mojitos, margaritas, and mai tais. Perfect accompaniment to the tacos: you can choose corn or flour tortillas (we split fish and shrimp, which were delicious). There's a chill patio, or you can sit inside. Would love to visit again.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant has lovely AC to cool you off from the heat outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server was attentive & friendly. She did a great job. The food is just OK, does not have a lot of flavor.

Yay! So happy to that they were accommodating! I'm currently gluten-free, vegetarian and so I asked if they could do the veggie quesadilla on corn tortilla instead of the usual flour tortilla. They said yes! Of course it doesn't taste the same since it's on a corn tortilla but I was still happy with my meal since I was able to enjoy my mock-quesadilla-thingy. LoL. The waitress we had was a bit off. Perhaps she was new? *shrug* In any case, the food was good!

My wife and I stopped by for pre-dinner drinks and we absolutely loved the drinks that we were able to try out. I started out with a cocktail called the "Spam Dram", a crispy Spam fat-washed barrel-proof bourbon, combined with seared Spam and nori syrup and topped off with a spam musubi garnish. As one might guess, this drink was presented in a spam musubi tin, and atop the bed of crushed ice was an *entire* spam musubi. The drink was a perfect representation of spam musubi in a glass -- sweet, savory, and full of umami. Props to whichever bartender put together this creative drink. The next drink I ordered was the "Smoky Bear", another bourbon based cocktail. This one had bird's eye chili essence in it, and was much closer than your traditional Old Fashioned, except it had an incredible amount of smokiness and a punch of heat to it as well. If you enjoy stiff drinks with complexity, look no further than this cocktail. While we were seated at the bar, we overheard somebody close to us mentioning a password special that had been posted on the Instagram page of The Hidden Nene. We checked their latest story posted two hours earlier and the password special for the day was a "fizz me baby one more time", a strawberry and yuzu gin fizz. My wife ordered this cocktail as her second drink and loved how refreshing the drink tasted. Overall, if you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to check out The Hidden Nene if you're in Hilo.

The service was quick, relaxed, and friendly. The cocktails are upscale priced, but well made. They do offer a full food menu, we did not order any food on our visit.

One waitress said that she was going to come back and then didn't return for over 15 minutes plus. My friend got the Loco Loco over tater tots, which was very filling and delicious. I got the ribs. Initially the only rib that was hot was the end piece and as soon as I cut it, the remainder was ice cold. I told the waitress who took it back to the kitchen, and they reheated it. The ribs overall were tasty, though not the most tender ribs I've ever ever had. I did like the French fries though it was cold after they reheated my ribs.

Walking through the entrance we were greeted by a server who also doubled as a bartender. We proceeded to order the following: Mai Tai's, Jamaican Jerk seasoned chicken tenders (wife) and the Lava burger (me)...both orders with the hand cut tavern fries. Since the restaurant was fairly empty, our orders came out fairly quickly. Both of our orders arrived hot and were very flavorful. As we enjoyed our meals and sipped our deliciously strong Mai Tai's, we enjoyed people watching and eavesdropping on the conversations held by locals. Throughout our visit, the server did a great job of checking in on us. If you're in Hilo and have a yearning for some delicious food and strong drinks, I recommend checking out Hilo Town Tavern. My only regret is that we did not visit during a karaoke night!

For $14 and $13 respectively, these seemed like very reasonable prices. Definitely something I'll check out on my next visit. On the right side of the store is a gift shop, while the left side has a bunch of seating for patrons. I noticed there were a few people here with their laptops out, so I can only assume it's also a good place to work as well.
