Mike was not only an expert in all things chocolate, but he is easy to understand, he takes time to teach you and answer any questions and he has a great personality! It was pouring down rain the day we went, yet the tour was still a great success. We started out at the farm and then concluded down at the shop. You get to taste fresh cacao, nibs, cacao tea and kakao brew - of course at the shop are the full chocolate bars. Mike clearly loves what he does and enjoys sharing that love with his customers. The only down side is that after listening to Mike you will be ruined forever on eating any other general retail chocolate. So long Hershey and friends!

He built his cacao farm from the bottom up and it was amazing to witness his progress ever since 2017. He walked us through the seed germination process, the growing process, the fermentation process and everything before, in between and after that.. from seed all the way to chocolate bar. This tour is meant to expand your knowledge and change your perspective on how you think about, taste, and experience chocolate. At the end of the farm tour, you drive down to the gift shop (about a 3 min drive from the farm) to make any potential purchases as well as taste even more chocolate! What an amazing and unique experience in Honaka'a and 100% recommend adding this tour to your Big Island itinerary. P.S. my favorite chocolate bar is the barrel aged bourbon bar!! Notes of dark cherry with a bourbon finish :)

(My father lived on the island for over forty years and we have many treasured memories there.) I walked in and was loudly ordered to sanitize my hands. Of course I complied, but to be honest it was abrupt and slightly off putting. I shopped around and found three small items to purchase as gifts. The black "leather" flower purse I got was half off and in the original packing bag; perfect for packing in my suitcase. After I brought the purse home I opened it for wrapping and found that the "leather" had flaked off and looked old and was quite frankly a huge mess. Black flakes were everywhere and the entire bag was in terrible shape. There was no way I could give this as a gift. In fact, I threw it away. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I don't think I will ever go back into that store. Not the kind of shopping experience to repeat.

The shop has a lot of very beautiful pieces of local artists. In particular, their wood art is especially beautiful. And very pricey too! Most are made of Koa, like the $3,900 rocking chair. I really wish I had a place for this, and the big bucks to buy up and decorate my home with this beautiful art. Maybe in another lifetime (lol). Seriously, there is a lot of nice art work of here. If you want to take a home a special memory of Waipio Vally and the Big Island you should check out this shop. Oh, and there is also a small cafe to buy snacks and drinks. We would have meetings on the Big Island every so often. After our gatherings, we'd roam around the town! This store still has amusing gifts, practical items, and cute stuff! It has postcards, jewelry, t-shirts, plushies, baby items, children's toys, Aloha shirts, soaps, lotions, books, Hello Kitty merchandise, tote bags, greeting cards, and more! You go back to the house and learn about the process to make chocolate. It's part presentation and part video. Courtney will open a pod and you can taste the beans: the while squishy part tastes like apple jolly ranchers. The purple bean is bitter, so you have to swallow it fast. Then you get to sample different types of chocolates. Yum! The tour is about an hour. I think it's a good balance between information and keeping things going. I definite recommend for adults and our 6 year-old son enjoyed it.
