He walked us through the seed germination process, the growing process, the fermentation process and everything before, in between and after that.. from seed all the way to chocolate bar. This tour is meant to expand your knowledge and change your perspective on how you think about, taste, and experience chocolate. At the end of the farm tour, you drive down to the gift shop (about a 3 min drive from the farm) to make any potential purchases as well as taste even more chocolate! What an amazing and unique experience in Honaka'a and 100% recommend adding this tour to your Big Island itinerary. P.S. my favorite chocolate bar is the barrel aged bourbon bar!! Notes of dark cherry with a bourbon finish :)

(My father lived on the island for over forty years and we have many treasured memories there.) I walked in and was loudly ordered to sanitize my hands. Of course I complied, but to be honest it was abrupt and slightly off putting. I shopped around and found three small items to purchase as gifts. The black "leather" flower purse I got was half off and in the original packing bag; perfect for packing in my suitcase. After I brought the purse home I opened it for wrapping and found that the "leather" had flaked off and looked old and was quite frankly a huge mess. Black flakes were everywhere and the entire bag was in terrible shape. There was no way I could give this as a gift. In fact, I threw it away. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I don't think I will ever go back into that store. Not the kind of shopping experience to repeat.

During my trip to the Big Island I went to check out this shop for the very first time. I didn't know what to expect when I went to the shop but they had a variety of things. They had hairpicks made from koa, hat pins, leis to adorn lauhala hats, as well as an array of handmade lauhala crafts. Compared to the marked up items sold in Honolulu these items were priced affordably and you could tell by looking at the items that they were made locally vs the made in the Philippines crafts frequently sold around town. The Aunty in the shop was very knowledgeable and helpful. She could even tell you who made each item in her shop. If you're interested in lauhala crafts I'd suggest visiting this local shop. There's another lauhala store in Hilo however this one has more local items and are more affordable.

Just three days prior to that, we spent a couple hundred dollars at the SoHa Keiki store at the same Marketplace. In short, a female red-headed employee displayed some micro-aggressions towards me when she mentioned, "We also don't offer Kama'āina discount," when I didn't even ask for it, nor do I ever - even though I'M HAWAIIAN along with most of my maternal and paternal ohana, our ancestral roots or Native to Hawai'i. This really young red-head sat behind the counter the entire time as patrons like us came and went. She lacks basic awareness of our Native Hawaiian culture and requires DEI training. We will not be returning to this particular location. I bought one big one with a pineapple and a small one with a plumeria. Later I ended up giving the small plumeria one to my sister. I really needed another big trivet the size of the pineapple one, so I called the store a few months later and they shipped me another one. Pass on the kitschy ABC Stores and tourist traps down by the ocean and head up to Waimea one day. Take a side trip to the Waipio Lookout and grab lunch in Waimea too.

Okay I'm on vacation and expect to pay a little extra for whatever, especially in Hawaii. Cha ching, that'll be $75. WTF? Damn, I was expecting a high of MAYBE $45. So, yes, they have some very nice and unique items in this store, but be prepared to drop a few more coins than expected. Yes, I bought the woven colorful fish for my baby doll anyhow. I wasn't about to disappoint the wee one and I had to be stoic in front of my wife who was laughing internally at me, knowing I can be a cheap ass. This thing was made in Sri Lanka and is suppose to be a one of a kind item. Even if it's not I doubt my granddaughter and her parents will ever bump into anyone having anything similar. Fast forward a month later - she has named the fish (Bubbles), sleeps with it regularly, and carries it with her on outings. So, I guess it was well worth the $$$. If I ever had a reason to go back to this part of the island I'd probably return and see what the latest unique thing the owner has in there. Who knows, I may end buying something else too. The place was A-OK in my books.

They carry a number of local artists as well as national brands. Just ask if you want to know which pieces are by locals / islanders. I found a cool little pendant that had Big Island sand in it (I know... totally touristy but it was cute and was by a local), and my mom found some beautiful earrings made by a lady on Maui. The lady manning the store was very personable but not pushy. So, she gets a plus for not pressuring us to buy anything but instead gave us tidbits of info on the local pieces/artists. Stop by and say Hi and take your time to look through everything. You might be surprised. :)
