I don't do a lot of reviews, but I really wanted to give a shout out to Big Island Transportation and its owner John. I was able to book an airport shuttle for a really good rate on short notice (1 day) for a business trip I was taking to Hawaii. Their online system was easy to use and they were extremely prompt with communications. John left me a voicemail with easy instructions for how to find them when I arrived and had a driver waiting with a sign with my name on it right at the exit when I arrived. However, the thing that really pushed me to write this review is how John handled a minor misunderstanding. Within about 5 minutes (not even kidding) of me sending an email regarding a question I had, John called me personally to get things sorted out. He was quick, pleasant, and got everything handled without me having to do anything. He even followed up to ensure I was happy with how things were handled. I was so impressed with their service that I immediately booked them for my return airport transfer. This is a well-run local company with a lot of integrity and dedication to ensuring that your transportation on the Big Island is a breeze! read more

Everything was perfect! John, the owner, called me the day before our arrival to introduce himself and verify our travel information. He was friendly and professional and told me the name of the driver that would be waiting for me. Our flight arrived early and Our driver, Ryan , had already texted me to let me know he was there waiting for us with a sign with my name on it. Ryan was fantastic! He made us feel welcome and safe. He truly enhanced our vacation by giving us so many wonderful tips and suggestions. I was so thrilled to have him as our driver again for the second leg of our trip and once again he gave us the most fantastic must do list including ways to maximize our finances and fun. He took the time to get to know us and what we wanted to do and pointed out the best places to go as well as answering all our questions and even after transport text questions. He even shared his Foodie instagram with us and we loved it. We also used the John's shuttle from the Hilton to Queen's market and back several times and it was well worth the $5/trip. John and his team are absolute rock stars and professionals in every way. They went out of their way to meet all of our needs and to make sure we were comfortable throughout our trip from our resort and back. They took a huge group of us (several vans full) to the Black Sands Beach and waited for us while we enjoyed some time down there. They were very responsive and perfectly punctual. Ended up canceling my reservation. The guy that answered the phone was rude. I told him I was a party of 9 and he said he would need 2 vans to pick me up. I was hoping it would be one big shuttle that accommodates all of us. When I heard him say 2 vans I was disappointed and said "Oh man." He answers me with $150 is pretty cheap your welcome to shop around. I tell him I wanted to keep the reservation and he replies "I thought you wanted to cancel the reservation 'coz when you said 'Oh man' you made it sound like I was ripping you off." This attitude took me by surprise. I did not want to know how he would treat his customers once he picks them up, so I canceled the reservation right away. read more

I needed to get to the airport from Kona, on the day of the Ironman World Championship and with the many road closures, it was hard to find transportation, most people were charging a significant premium and they were not sure they could get me. I called John and he helped me find a ride to the airport and charged me less than half of what other folks quoted me. John was amazing. We used him when the 6 of us landed at Kona Airport to Hilton Waikola Village. He called us in Chicago the night before we left (it was super exciting to get an incoming call from "Hawaii" too! and he answered any questions and let us know exactly what to expect at the airport. He was super nice, prompt and awesome. The night before we left Kona, he called us again letting us know who the driver would be the next morning (it was Steve - also awesome) and where he would pick us up at the hotel. Lastly, once we got back to Illinois, I needed an additional receipt for the tip (so that I could get reimbursed for work). I emailed John, and he got it back to me within the hour. I took my daughter to the Big Island for a Covid-escape vacation, and was surprised that there were no rental cars available. John absolutely saved our trip! He was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived, in a spotless vehicle, and couldn't have been lovelier. He drove us everywhere we needed on the island, including a drive down a foggy mountain road at night, which would have been a real nail-biter in less capable hands, and a stop at our favorite burger place. He was easy to communicate with via text, always early, a delight to chat with along the way, and an excellent driver. Big Island Transportation really took care of me during my time on the Big Island, going above and beyond what was expected. Easily the best transportation service I've ever used, communication was easy via text messaging and responses were quick. Prices were cheaper than other shuttle companies, and what I particularly liked was having the van all to ourselves which means we didn't have to share with strangers. Also, while other companies told me shuttle services were exempt from using car seats, Big Island Transportation actually provides car seats or booster seats for free! On our way to the hotel Mr. T gave us some pointers on what to do and things that are fun around big island. He even gave us his business card if we had any questions on where to go. When we got to the hotel and found out that the hotel ran out of cars to rent we called him immediately and he took us back to the airport to pick one up. He was so kind and gracious and willing to help in such short notice. I have to say he was better than the concierge at my hotel that i would rather not mention.
