This place is a local legend. I've known about it since I was a kid, but I had never been there prior to today. Over the years, I've either had an artificial Christmas tree, or bought a real tree from one of the parking lot tree stands run by the Boy Scouts or something. For this year, my wife had a different idea: she proposed that we buy a Christmas tree with the roots intact, so we could put it on our porch to decorate it, and then replant it in our yard after Christmas. The Coventry Reminder had an ad for Big John Leyden's tree farm, so I called them to confirm that they sold trees that could be replanted. The farm is easy to find, just a short distance off Route 102. Upon driving in the entrance, a greeter explains the process. The fields are organized by letters. For example, Blue Spruce evergeens are located in fields A, B and C. You drive down a dirt road that goes through the fields, until you arrive at the field that has the species of tree you are seeking. Next, you park your vehicle and walk around until you find the tree you want. Then, you tag the tree you want and one of the employees will cut the tree. If you follow the dirt road, which loops to the left, there is a building where the cut trees are baled for loading onto your vehicle. In our case, we didn't want a cut tree, so we had to wander around and ask for help to find the area that had the trees that were potted or balled in burlap. My wife remarked that the trees in the fields were shaped very nicely. We saw many families looking at trees; some brought their dogs. Once we found the right area, we had to ask for help again, but help came reasonably quickly, considering how busy they were on a Sunday afternoon. What struck me most was how reasonable the prices were, compared to a nursery. My wife has wanted a Blue Spruce to plant since we bought our house about three years ago. I had looked for them at nurseries, but the prices for a 6-foot specimen were usually around $200. Leyden's was selling the same-sized Blue Spruce for only $70 to $80! And a beautifully-shaped, 3-foot Blue Spruce, which we ultimately chose, was a mere $40. It would have cost double that price (or more) at a big box store or a nursery. Both the young man who helped us, and I, were equally surprised at how heavy our potted, 3-foot-tall Blue Spruce weighed. The two of us struggled to lift the tree onto my pickup truck. The pot seemed very large, considering the size of the tree. At home, I cut the pot off the root-bound tree; de-tangled the roots; loosened the soil in the root ball; wrapped the roots in burlap they gave us; and transferred it to a smaller pot. Shedding some of the soil from the larger pot enabled me to just ... barely ... get it off my truck and onto my porch by myself. Good thing we didn't get a 6-foot tree. After I did the heavy lifting, my wife lit and decorated it. Since it's still relatively warm, I plan to dig a hole in our yard where we will plant it after Christmas. If all goes well, we will get to enjoy it on our porch for the holiday, and in our yard permanently. All in all, my wife and I had a very enjoyable experience for our first visit to a Christmas tree farm, and will likely make Big John Leyden's an annual tradition.

This isn't truly a "cut your own" Christmas Tree joint unless you bring your own saw. Otherwise you'll be fishing around the fields for a guy to take a chainsaw to it. The tree selection was very good despite half of the great ones being tagged. If you want to reserve a tree, you can come in early in the season and claim one aka "tag" it. Bring ribbons and decorations to do so. They will pack up the tree for you and provide you with as much rope as you need to get it on your car (which you do yourself). My hint for that is to tie some rope in between some of the bottom branches and bring it down the front of the car and tie it through your license plate. That'll keep it from sliding off the back on the highway. This place seems pretty famous and we came because of all the online mentions and traditions people mentioned about coming here. It's a great little/big place, trees are $45 bucks and there's a giant Santa Claus to take pictures with the kiddies.

    Our Christmas tree!

Yikes...I should have paid attention to all the negative reviews…read more I went prepared though....limited my questions, was polite, and had my measurements for the amount of mulch I needed. But, I soon felt like I was in the Seinfeld soup episode "No soup for you". After the amount was calculated, I had a few more questions regarding delivery ...and was quickly met with an exhasperated "are you buying today?" from the older "gentleman" at the counter. I said I was getting all the info today and I needed to go home to check on the size of the tarp I had to hold the mulch as well as whether I wanted black or brown mulch. Then, I asked if I could call in the order and pay by cc. My intent, all along, was to purchase from Highland Farm as I live in the area and didn't want to shop farther out and did want to support a local business. I was not disputing the cost of the mulch or delivery charges he quoted me at all. When I asked if he could write down the price/delivery for both the brown and black mulch for me , that's when things went south. He refused, saying something about me just going home and not returning or some nonsense about me holding him to the price(?). He declared I'd get the price again when I called or came back. Huh? I was stunned, but remained silent and decided not to engage with this sour, unpleasant man. I simply said ok, thank you, and left. In the end I purchased the mulch elsewhere where I was treated with respect, and paid less for both the mulch and delivery. It, however, was never about the cost, but the, rude, undeserved treatment I received. Granted I didn't't go there looking to become a "friend" but, come on... Who treats customers like that? Never again... ,
