The wood paneling in the dining room reminds me of my grandma's house.

The rooms themselves, however have been upgraded and have all the modern conveniences. The proprietors, Steve and Carter, couldn't be more friendly and accommodating. While we did not have dinner there, we DID have breakfast, on the balcony. As I said, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there, and highly recommend them!

What a great little Inn! The room we were in was clean, though compact, and of course there's the BALCONY looking over the mountains! What a great view! The gentleman in charge there was welcoming, friendly, and patient with us. You can order breakfast and/or dinner, which is added in with your bill. Not exaggerating when I say he made us one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had, with thick slices of perfectly ripe tomato, and perfectly cooked/seasoned crinkle fries. In the morning, we had some of the best biscuits with sausage gravy, and pancakes and bacon since my grandma's! I'm sure the fresh, cool, mountain air had something to do with our appetites, but really, he did an excellent job at making some simple comfort food. Good/fair prices on the lodgings and food, nice company and stellar views=AAA+++ in my book. We'll definitely be back!

I arrived first and checked in, and I had to ask repeatedly was my card being held for incidentals or to pay for the room before the clerk finally admitted it was to pay for the room. The front desk clerk said it wouldn't be a problem for us to change the room charge to my buddy's card the next day. The next day when we went in to change the card, the same clerk told us it had already been charged and he couldn't change it. When I repeated what he said the day before he just told me he couldn't change it. The pro -Close to, in town. The con -Dishonest staff -Terrible beds -Towels were dirty -Thin walls allow you to hear everything going on around you.

This just released the cigarette smoke smell. We also bought our own cleaning supplies because after several minutes of the baby walking barefoot in the room his feet were black. The shower was dangerously slippery and fluctuated between hot and cold. The electrical outlets were Scotch taped to the walls, light fixtures were loose and not functioning. I had to request a new quilt because the original had a giant stain on it. For over $100 a night, this is by far the grossest place I have ever had the misfortune of having to stay.

Do you prefer to walk on the hotel's treadmill rather than risk the outdoors? Are you the type that expects to grab all the little boxes of (children's size) Frosted Flakes on your way out for road snacks? If these are your expectations then this isn't your kind of hotel place to stay. Here's why: #1. Spruce Pine is not Blowing Rock, Boone, or Asheville. It's not a "destination" spot for 84.7% of the traveling public. #2. If you're going, then you're probably going for the reasons we did, to find a nice place to stay during the night while we hiked around during the daylight hours. At the end of the day, we wanted some pretty Okay places to eat and when morning came we wanted some relaxing places to slurp coffee. #3. If you stay at this hotel as we did, then you are prepared to stroll over the foot bridge that takes you into their little downtown. For those of you who are taxing-paying North Carolinians, you will enjoy knowing that the area's community college has a big hand revitalizing the former school and hockey rink and turning them into the hotel and community sports/activity center. The overall (good, win-win) effect should be to help bring in outside tourist dollars while providing community members and their families with a nice indoor complex. We found our room clean and pleasant. The price was fair and met our budget. The staff people were helpful. The patio decks and landscaping are incomplete but enough work has been done to suggest how pretty it will be when it all comes together. Finally, although we're not into trout fishing, it seems pretty obvious that enthusiasts coming from outside the area will appreciate the super easy access to the Toe and the proximity to the hotel.

We liked it as soon as we saw it: an old-fashioned motel with everything we needed and more. The owner-operator, Mr. Curtis, was a friendly and outgoing gentleman with an outstanding background as a professional pilot, and we enjoyed trading stories of our travels. He treated the boys and me to ice cream that evening, and a nice breakfast in the morning. The room was nice, spacious, clean and comfortable in an old-fashioned way. It had a modern TV with cable and a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. It was actually a refreshing change from the modern-day cookie-cutter motels. We look forward to staying there again in the future!
