Fire pit is to the left just out of view of this picture.

This was easily going to be a 5 star review until we awoke at 1:30am to a room filled with smoke and the smell of chemicals. There is a fire pit above the rooms. We were staying in a room on the corner and the smoke from the fire pit drifted into our room. My husbands eyes were burning and both of our throats felt raw. He went up and told the owner to put out the fire, which he quickly did. We opened all windows and doors to clear the room of the smoke and smell but of course it was all we could smell the rest of the night. Didn't get anymore sleep after that and thank goodness neither of us have asthma! Left exhausted and the owner never acknowledged what happened. In fact he was bragging about what a great time he had at the fire pit right before I walked into the office to check out. Won't ever be back. Also, I'm now realizing that there must not have been any fire alarms because none ever went off and one most certainly should have had it been in our room and functional. Absolutely not a safe place to stay.

Excellent place to stay on the side of a mountain for a fantastic sunrise view. The owners were great and very friendly.

July 4. Charlotte's oppressive 95 deg days had retricted my outside time to early mornings only and, as a result, claustrophobia and cabin fever set in. My remedy? A little known jewel a mere two hours from Charlotte called Little Switzerland! Located 30 miles north of Marion and Lake James, it seems to be an area that time has forgotten. The quaint little city of Spruce Pine lies 6 miles north and has a couple of excellent restaurants, the best being The Tropical Grill, an authentic little Cuban joint. And did I mention that it is regularly 10-12 degrees cooler than Charlotte with substantially lower humidity? Sound interesting? Read on... It is home to three very charming and nostalgic inns all with incredible views: The Alpine Inn, The Big Lynn Lodge and the Little Switzerland Inn. We have stayed at all three and each has its own charm. If this seems like an promotion, well, it sort of is. You see I selfishly want this area to continue to exist and hope to inspire some of you (but not too many) to visit. We begin our short trip, with one night at the smallest of the three, the Alpine Inn,  which, while safe and long-standing, feels like it hangs off the mountain side and, although it is only a mile away from the general store, it feels much more remote. Their succinct motto, "It's all about the views", is accurate as it offers the best views of the three. Being that we were here on July 4th provided an added bonus which was being able to view four fireworks displays at once in the valley below from Lake James, Marion and two other neighboring cities. There is no A/C but with 60 deg nights we hardly notice. The beds are comfortable, and the rooms, while rustic, are immaculate. Although there are no TVs in the rooms, there is free wireless internet in case you get the shakes from a night away from Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune. The property itself is small, consisting of only  two three-story buildings. Parking at first seems scarce, as it is the situated right off of a hairpin curve very close to the road, but additional parking is available across the road.. A private balcony room like ours runs $115. Breakfast on the veranda is available for $8.50 a person and consists of fresh made pumpkin and strawberry bread,  granola, fresh fruit, coffee, juice along with best views on the property. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, as hummingbirds dine right along beside you while relaxing instrumental music plays in the background. It's one of my favorite NC experiences. Finally, the do-it-all innkeepers Ron and Susan are friendly, accomodating and obviously love what they do. They have cheerfully welcomed guests for the past 12 years.

I was fortunate to return to the Alpine Inn after 15years! There were many visits before, but I had moved to FL. The current hosts Don & Sue are wonderful and the renovations are excellent -- the clean, simple charm, leaning architecture, and lovely quiet of no room phones nor tv are what you come here for. Well actually the VIEW and sunrise on your own balcony! Don't miss the fabulous Alpine breakfast on the Inn's balcony complete with humming birds.

This is one of my favorite places to stay along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western NC. Is it a 5-star resort with amenties? No. Does it have flatscreens, phone, pool, gym or air-conditioning? No. What it does have is unbelievable views, easy access to the BRP, hiking trails, great homemade breakfast, and friendly staff to boot. Oh.. and it's clean! If you're looking for a get away from the hustle and bustle I would suggest staying at the Alpine Inn. I would be sure to ask for a room with a balcony though. The few rooms with windows only - don't allow you to get the full experience of being nestled into the mountain top. As far as restaurants around that area -- there is one place down the street in a small strip mall and of course the Switzerland Inn -- that is the more mainstream hotel in the area.

Beautiful quiet setting warm and friendly hosts. Beautiful breakfast made with love. July 4th Fireworks in Spruce Pine exceeded expectations. Great small town experience.

The morning breakfast is ok but nothing special eggs, sausage, waffles and assorted pastries and hot cereal. The coffee is ok. All in all I would stay again . The negatives there is an odd smell throughout the hotel I can only think it must be the disinfectants or cleaners used. It is mentioned in other reviews. The location is odd you have to drive thru the pelican snow lot to the hotel. The staff when we checked in had trouble with their system and we had to check in a second time the next day. The beds were adequate but not comfortable an$ we left early instead of staying overnight. Again not bad for the price

Just saying the night. TV only went to 15. Okay. Talking in room like normal people and someone BEATS on our door at 12:30 saying to "shut the F up." Literally just talking. No one is yelling. Decided to check out. Women in lobby said someone complained about noise. She claimed she walked down hallway and heard multiple rooms making noise. Then proceeded to scream in our face, like red faced screaming. Also claimed she had a problem with locals (who were all over the parking lot but I could give a shit- just want to sleep). Said she can't do anything about our situation. So now I've paid $450 for a room I stayed in for 3 hours. When booking app tells you this place is great? Look at yelp. They have a shit score for a reason. Checked in at 9:30. Checked out at 12:45. No thanks. Now to go get my $300 deposit back.

There are trails on the property, which we greatly enjoyed, and the stargazing at night is spectacular. Cathy and her family were absolutely wonderful hosts. We mentioned we were taking this trip shortly after our anniversary, and we arrived to find a bottle of champagne, chocolates, and roses waiting for us. Oh and they really do leave you farm fresh eggs, fresh baked bread, and plenty of chopped firewood as well! The kitchen has all the gadgets you'd need for basic meals, as well at a Keurig and a little stockpile of coffee and hot cocoa. This was the most relaxing vacation I have ever had, and I nearly cried when it was time to leave. We are already planning our trip back. Location is great too, not too far at all from Black Mountain and Asheville, and a short ride from the Blue Ridge Parkway. This place is worth every single penny, don't let the one or two negative reviews impact to your decision. Please stay here!

The furnishings are so cute and the bed is super comfy!! I slept like a baby last night which rarely happens if I am staying at a chain hotel. I love the claw foot bathtub, which also has a shower in case you don't have time for a nice relaxing bath. I also love the toiletries they stock in the bathroom. The shampoo, conditioner, body wash & lody lotion all smell fabulous! They also include other essentials like makeup remover wipes, shower cap, etc. They even have some bath salts that smell fabulous if you have time to enjoy a nice bath. Unfortunately this trip is for business so, I havent had much relaxation time. Also, my hubby could not join me this time due to his work, but we will definitely have to come back on a weekend to enjoy this wonderful place together. Since I had to be at my client site at 7:00 AM, I did not get to enjoy the full sit down breakfast this morning but Teresa & Craig packed me a nice go-to b-fast bag packed with all sorts of goodies including juice, bagel with cream cheese, a banana, and a delish Kind bar & even put a nice go-to coffee cup out for me so that I could take my coffee on the road. Also, I must say in this day & age I am very concerned about cleanliness at the big chain hotels and this place is immaculate! I have already booked some return trips as I am working on a project in the area for the next several weeks. I am sooo glad I found this place and would highly recommend it! Growing up, our kids referred to it as the "Bridgey Mountains Cabin". Lois and Ron are wonderful hosts! It is uth Toe River built in the 1930's. It is located up hwy 80 about 30 minutes from both Spruce Pine to the right (on Hwy ) and Burnsville (on Hwy ). There are four waterfalls within a 45-minute drive. Asheville is only an hour away with the Grove Park Inn for an amazing romantic dinner, and you can visit the Biltmore Estate, Gardens & Vinyards (I highly recommend the Bistro). The cabin is located on one of the two only suspension swinging bridges in NC. The other swinging bridge is up river a few miles. We call this "Sunset Beach" because of the Vietnam veteran who stands on the bridge next to an American Flag every day at dusk and watches the sunset. We enjoy hearing his stories, and also inner-tubing, swimming, collecting mica and beautiful rocks, and fishing. Back at the cabin, just a short three minute walk from the house is the bridge used to cross the river. This is a beautiful place to enjoy wildlife, especially bird watching. Bring your binoculars. You might see the bald eagle nesting in the area. To the left of the bridge is a fantastic place young children to wade, explore, and collect rocks. To the right of the bridge, you can hop in and inner-tube down river. (Inner-tubes provided, life jackets a must! Strong currents, even for strong swimmers, bring your own). There's a grill, and if you ask nicely, John, Lois son might even build a bonfire so you can roast hot dogs and make smores! But, my husband and I both agree our favorite days are the rainy days reading on the porch listening to the rain fall on the tin roof, tree frogs, and the sound of the river. Nothing beats it. I told him I was waiting to check out, he said ok, you just leave the keys and go. I asked him for an itemized room receipt and he said your credit card receipt is your only receipt. (The credit card receipt has Days Inns as business name, different amount charged and no details). I told him that I requested an itemized room receipt when I checked in and was told that my receipt would be waiting for me at check out. He said there is no receipt here that I can give you. I then asked for the name of the manager/owner. He reluctantly gave me a first name and I had to ask twice for a last name. I told him I would speak with the manager about them doing better there. He said he was the Day Manager and wanted to know what my comments were. As I was explaining a particular experience he cut me off and began yelling at me and said it was my fault. A few minutes into the yelling a female employee came to the front and attempted to calm him down and told him to go in the back and I turned to leave also. Then he yelled out the F*** word at me. Shortly after some other customers came to the front desk and heard the details of the commotion and said they agree with me about the place because they also were having a bad experience/dispute with them for accusing them of smoking in the room and they didn't.
