Wide selection of food, our group of seven all ordered different items and shared, so all of us were able to sample several items. Fish and chips are made from walleye--another Michigan favorite. Salads were all really good, in fact everything we tried was good. Any choice you make here will be good." Can't say I was particularly impressed with our second (and likely last) visit here. There was only one beer that interested me, but the keg apparently blew when the waitress was getting my beer, so that was a no go. My daughter and I split a Detroit-style pizza. It was supposed to have cheese, sauce, and ricotta. I'm not big on ricotta, so I asked them to just add that to half, and add mushrooms to the other half...plus add pepperoni to the whole thing. What we got was technically correct, but also weird. The actual pizza didn't have any sauce under the cheese. I had a few dollops of sauce added to the top of my half. My daughter had no sauce on her half the pizza. Both the sauce, and especially the mushrooms, appeared to be added near the end because they weren't particularly hot and the mushrooms weren't really attached to the pizza and just fell off whatever slice I picked up. Saturday afternoon. Game day. OK, so it was a road game, but still, if you've been around Lawrence on a game day, then you know that crowds can form and kitchens can often fail to keep up. Big Mill occupies the southeast corner of 9th & Mississippi. For heaven's sake, I used to do laundry in this building! And Big Mill has paid homage to that former laundromat by keeping some dryer doors and other accoutrements as decor. The space plays bigger than it looks, and with some patio seating, there is lots of available options. And then there's the menu. Simple, direct, and sticking to what they look to do well, and that is Detroit-style pizza. The menu is very family and kid-friendly, and one pizza alone plus a shareable will easily feed two hungry diners. The boy and I opted for the pepperoni option, instead of asking him to dive straight into something that had ricotta cheese. He was enamored with the Wisconsin brick cheese, and the light, airy crust that can only happen when you do a pizza in a deep pan. The sauce is tangy and fresh, but the crust is the real star of the show. We also added in a shareable plate of wings, which are fried and not baked. The house option is a sweet and spicy sauce and the drumettes were done just perfectly. The mixture of pizza, wings, and basketball made for a great way to spend a Saturday lunch hour. Pricing is very reasonable, as we got out of there dining for two at $20. Our server, Izabella, was exceptionally friendly and really chatted up the pizza style. She was also the one that talked us into the shareable plus pizza and advised that the amount of food was perfect for two, even if one was a 13-year-old boy (frightening!). Boy oh boy! Let me tell ya, biggest mill I've ever seen. Figuratively, of course. In all seriousness, this restaurants modern and immaculate vibes make me bubble inside with positive vibes. As you walk in you're greeted with hip tunes and a hip host. They have a chill outdoor patio seating that will make you sit for hours and enjoy the beautiful Lawrence air. The selection of drafts that are available are superb! I got the back in da haze and oh wow I was so back in da haze. Oh and don't even get me started on the napkins! Quality, quality, quality! We got our jam on with their dope hummus. For dinner I got the quinoa and mushroom burger($6 dollar burgers on Sundays), every bite blasted my taste buds with suprime delight! We eventually had to get up to request things from the bar as the girl that was supposed to be our waitress was busy chatting with the other workers/kitchen staff. Sunday during lunch last month, several of us (3 tabs) and they were fairly slow. Now I know why. Won't eat there again. Why? The fried fish & chips dish that was sooo overcooked, it was chewy. I sent it back after taking a bit of the 2 smallish pieces, and they were both the same. I sent it back. I had also ordered a pizza to split with my wife. It was good as well as the salad my wife ordered. So, i didn't want fish order, but that didn't matter because they didn't even ask if I did want another. In fact, they didn't even say anything. When i got my bill they had taken only 10% off of that one dish on my tab only. Yes, they only refunded ~$1.50 for the inedible fish dish. Guess it's because I took a bite out of each one. On top of that, when I tried to catch the attention of one of the staff to order a drink, one looked at me, i waved, and she turned away. I had to walk over and ask to get a staff member to come over to the table. Then, on top of the insulting 10% discount, there was an 18% gratuity added without any notice. If only the story were done there. I believe in giving people a chance to make amends so i sent them an email using the one one their website. I'm still waiting for a response to that email. Love this spot! This was my first time and I loved it! We got money dogs and a pepperoni pizza! The pizza was excellent, thick but light and fluffy. And it may be the best pizza sauce I ever had. We stopped in for our night cap drinks and the quality of the drinks was great. Service was prompt, but since we're some of the only folks in the bar area. The bar/space has plenty of tables. My wife had a pizza. I had the fish and chips. I formerly thought it was hard to mess up fish and chips. I stand corrected. Neither of us finished our lunch. The waitress comped the check. It seemed that it wasn't the first time meals were comped there. Service was average. Waitress got my wife a beverage, but didn't ask if I wanted one. Food was good we tried the cauliflower crust it was delicious and they nailed the cheese and the pepperoni was phenomenal the sauce was succulent the grilled onions complemented it really well for the non-gluten-free option the crust was really fluffy. I am so excited about this place! Affordable, kid friendly, and unique-- it is an absolutely great addition to the Lawrence food scene. We had a few issues that keep me from giving it five stars but I definitely want to. So if our next trips are a bit smoother, I will update my review. FOOD The pizza is awesome and nothing like anything in town-- the ricotta is a great touch. I absolutely LOVED the kale pizza-- I will be back a million times just for it. It's crisp and cheesy. That chili sauce is next level and I want to put it on everything. My husband liked the sausage pizza quite a bit as well. We ordered the salad with carrots (sorry I forgot the formal name). The salad was ok but was pretty sweet and had too much dressing. Will not order again. Given what it's priced at-- underwhelming. The Mac & cheese was definitely a few steps up from your typical kids meal. It was mostly butter and milk, subtle cheese flavor, but that's how we like it. The desert (the only one on the menu) is a choux pastry. Unfortunately, I think their staff is still trying to master it. It was completely undone in the center-- uncooked dough. The sauce was super tart and didn't pair well, in my opinion. Desert was pretty disappointing. Their cocktail menu looks really good but we didn't try anything. Maybe next time. LOGISTICS Parking is definitely going to be an issue. We came at an off time so thankfully we didn't have to deal with it. There is plenty of seating though. They have high chairs and boosters. ATMOSPHERE I am never a fan of TVs but everyone else loves it so what can you do-- there are plenty of them here. It is 'mood lit' but the huge windows are really awesome. This place is a multi tool of vibes and seating options. You could bring someone on a great, affordable date here OR you could bring your two kids under two for an early dinner on a lazy day. We walked through the back door of "Big Mill," they opened yesterday, and within five seconds spotted one person i recognized form the Lawrence food scene working the floor. Turned to my wife and said, "This is going to be better than OK, this place is going to be a huge success" She looked at me in a way that said... "what on Earth are you talking about." More on that later. The old laundromat at the corner of 9th and Mississippi, a rundown somewhat, eyesore for years has been reborn in grand style. A beautifully designed space that's urban, hip, modern, and had on our first visit not a single shred of pretense or attitude. Just a bustling kitchen and wait staff that appeared to be minus the typical startup issues Lawrence is famed for. No hovering beginner wait staff asking if everything was OK for the 4th time. No confusion. No diners looking around with that WTF, why is no one paying attention to me and where is my food you've experienced too many times in your Lawrence restaurant visits. Just professional service that was just right. The food leans towards Detroit style pizza, new to me, and damn, what a crying shame something this good had not passed my lips before. Best pizza in Lawrence? Fuggedabowdit the rest of the city. It's here. What is Detroit Pizza you ask? What? Don't know how to use Google? Oh, wanting "authentic" pizza? Buy a plane ticket to Naples. But there's also great burgers with sweet potato fries, fantastic salads--our kale and roasted carrot salad was a smash hit to accompany my sublime Detroit Deluxe and my wife's Sausage that comes with a Cherry Pepper Relish that is first rate. The pizza bread is airy, cut in squares, the bottom clearly crisped by (guessing) butter. Absolutely first-rate. Both pizzas that soon disappeared accompanied by KC Bier Co. Pils and Tank 7 on draft. We chatted young and old seated next to us, was even offered a sweet potato fry from one. To die for. I hit up some elementary kids dining with mom and pop. "Your pizza any good?" "Yea!," they proclaimed. "You want to come back for more?" Heads nodded enthusiastically. And older couple next to us shook their heads at their burgers, "fantastic," they said. But there's more to the menu, and I'll post a few photos of that. Why I think this place will rise above the usual start-ups in town: someone I recognized with probably 25-30 years at one of the city's most iconic destinations for food and beverages is in the house running things. I was, quite frankly, shocked to see him. One of the few places in town where everything runs right, where people are exceptionally well trained, truly dedicated to their craft, and know how to make it happen and did it day in and day out. I had no idea, I just smiled when I saw him and thought to myself, yea, I'll be back here plenty. Few more things: truly first-rate drink menu. Way above average. Terrific best wines and craft beers--I know many of these well, but also plenty of favorites in cans and bottles. Nice selection of cocktails, not my thing, but might be yours. If you come: dedicated parking lot, but it may be full. All major credit cards accepted. Some above average picnic table sized dining spots for larger groups but also smaller tables and booths. BEWARE of Big Mill because although the food is good, it will hurt your stomach, and you'll be endangered. Last night I went to the Big Mill. I had high expectations for this place because I have never been. The atmosphere was great and the service was amazing! I got a burger (I don't remember the name), and the flavor was amazing! It melted on your tongue and you felt everything in the burger. The bun was toasted to PERFECTION!!! The juice was delicious and tasted so good I got a second round of it. Then it hit me. My stomach hurt like NEVER before. I rushed to the bathroom to find HORROR! Someone was already using the restroom... They only have ONE toilet! They should have more with how bad the food hurts. As soon as I got in there all hell broke loose. I was pooping stuff from 2016. It CLEARED my stomach. I walked out of that restroom to find another weary soul clinching their legs together. After my bathroom experience I walked back to my seat. I rejoined the conversation and unshockingly one of my friends was in the bathroom. Then out of nowhere a Nissan Prius burst through the wall. Some of the best pizza I've ever had! My favorite spot in Lawrence. Instead of mozzarella, they use brick cheese and it honestly gives a better flavor to the pizza . Brick cheese tastes like mozzarella and parmesan combined so it's a little sharper. Both of the pizzas that I've tried here were absolutely delightful! We really had a great time - our first time here today! We were in Lawrence meeting up with our son for Mother's Day, did not have reservations, so were looking for places that are maybe not on Mass street and may actually be able to seat us quickly. Like always Yelp did not fail us- saw the 4.5 stars and decided to try our luck here. It was kind of later in the afternoon so I think that's why we got lucky and were seated right away- first win! Food was great too: - my son got the Detroit style pizza (I had not even known Detroit had A STYLE of pizza- till today!)- with the kale and spinach, he loved it. I obviously tasted it and agree with him. Definite hit and will definitely be going back for it! - my husband debated b/w the fish n' chips or the fried chicken, ended up getting the fried chicken sandwich- it was huge! And pretty good! - I got the roast beef, also huge, and similarly pretty good. Was relatively pricey for what we had, but we all got 2 meals out of it- so overall not bad at all! I'm torn about this place because I've had mixed experiences. The food is good, but the service is iffy. I went on a Friday night early. The place wasn't even half full and the lady bartender behind the counter took forever to notice me and seemed really stressed out. When I looked around every single one of the staff looked extremely stressed out too as if they had just been yelled at by their boss or .something. It wasn't even 5 o'clock yet. I almost left because I just felt like I wasn't supposed to be there. When the bartender lady did notice me she then asked the guy she was working with to take my order. He was fine and friendly. When I tried to make friendly conversation with the lady later, she acted like she really didn't want to be talking to me, but she knew she had to pretend friendliness because she was working. I didn't try again after that. I usually talk it up a bit with the bartenders, but this lady was having none of it. In contrast, earlier in the week I came and there was a gentleman bartender, a ginger, behind the bar, and he was super nice and friendly, and explaining the drinks to me, etc. That's what I expect from a bartender. I never act like I'm above somebody else and I certainly don't want them acting like they're above me. Anyway, I have no problem with the food, I have no problem with the atmosphere, and the place is clean. The prices are slightly inflated, but the quality of drinks and food is good. The parking is a bit tight, but it's better than downtown where you can never find a parking spot. read more

Great atmosphere-very chill and homey; feels like the kind of place you could easily make a regular "Thursday night" (or whatever day of the week you choose) hangout if you live in Lawrence. Our waitress (Maddie) was very warm and welcoming and really knew her stuff about the menu items for which we asked questions. The Clean Wash (??) drink was AMAZING!! Perfect for a hot night refresher without knocking you on your butt after just one. The Big Mill burger and house fries were delicious as well as the Spinach and goat cheese salad (I ordered mine with salmon and it was cooked to perfection)! We're in town only two nights and I would have gone back our second night, but I picked it for our first night and I wanted to let my son have a say for night two since Lawrence is going to be his new stomping grounds in the fall.
