This is a beautiful brewery in the heart of Lawrence downtown. There are plenty of options in this brewery, but I happen to try their umbrella and there's also the hazy which is amazing. It's a very old brewery and I feel like the people are around this area, often go there and have fun. they have seasonal beers and they have limited menu with the food. A few of us went for dinner and sat in the front dining area which I love. They have multiple seating areas; bar, front dining room, upstairs dining, back of the building etc . Madeline was our server and she wad so attentive and friendly. Two people in our group ordered the specials, Blue Ribbon Plate and Mediterranean Flatbread, both said they were good and fresh. I ordered the Verde Salad which was okay. Not the best Ive had, there was something about the noodles that was off. Normally it's magnificent!!! Another dish I've tried and is a favorite of mine is the Nashville Hot Mac n Cheese. As for our beverages we enjoyed a few of their very own brewed beers and they were outstanding! Our first server was amazing. We had the pretzel plate and the arancini balls. Both were really good. The beer was good and cold. The atmosphere was good but a bit loud. We had family there already and we just needed one more chair but they wouldn't accommodate us but did sit us next to them. A friend and I went here on a limb, very spontaneous and boy was it packed! Which to me, is always a good sign. Being as packed as it was, it's probably not the best place for quiet, intimate conversations, but to hang out with family or friends, it's just right! Luckily, being a party of 2, we didn't have to wait and were very quickly seated. We had an awesome waitress (wish I remembered her name) who answered all our questions and provided recommendations! I ordered the tomato bruschetta as my appetizer, friend ordered these ginormous onion rings for hers! I wasn't incredibly hungry, so as my "main dish" I ordered their well known asparagus patties. The bruschetta was very refreshing, came with 3 prices and smothered in pickled onions. I do think we could have lessened a bit on the onions, and that hurts me to say as an onion lover. Just a tad bit sour for my liking! But the asparagus cakes were absolutely delish! They sat on a lemony cream sauce, which paired so well with the asparagus and microgreens on top. Their ice cream for the day was a blend of white chocolate/jalapeño jam. It sounds intimidating, but it was probably one of my favorite ice creams I've had in awhile. Subtle sweet, jalapeño flavor with little flakes of white chocolate. I'd go back and order a tub of just that! Overall very good experience and will visit again soon! read more

As longtime residents of Lawrence, we are well-acquainted with Free State Brewery (I used to come and get growler refills in my 20s), but every single time we stop in, we are impressed all over again. My husband and I had a lunch date there this week, and for a Wed at 2pm, it was busy! Almost all the tables were full when we arrived. Our friendly waitress was ready for our beer orders, and brought out our giant pretzel appetizer quickly. Wow! It was warm & toasty, with several cheese, olive, meat & fruit choices alongside. For me, the stars of the dish were the house-made mustard and warm beer cheese dipping sauce. My husband ordered fish & chips- his fav menu item- and I got a side salad since I knew I'd want mostly that pretzel. Oof! Even the salad was yummy- not like many places that use iffy premixed salad, this dish was well-composed of fresh ingredients. We aren't regulars of Free State Brewery, and honestly, I'm not sure why. The ambiance is always bright & relaxed, the food is always excellent, and the prices are lower than other Mass St restaurants who charge more. Kudos to FSB! This review is purely based on the beer and not the food. We were on our way to New Mexico and decided to hit some spots in Kansas, and what better stop than their oldest brewery? We parked quite far away, as this fun town was packed even on a gloomy day. We walked in and it was pretty busy, but they had a spot for two at a table, even though the bar was full. I ordered the Free State Lager, and I believe my partner ordered the Amber. Both drinks were really smooth and easy to throw back! We felt a bit rushed because there were people waiting to get a table to actually eat, so we only had one and then left to find somewhere a little more low-key. I have been here twice and I just won't return here when there are SO MANY other better choices in Lawrence. I just do not think their food is that great. Usually flavorless and subpar. Staff is friendly but it's too loud for my taste. I prefer to go to a spot where I can actually have a conversation and not have to shout. Black bean quesadilla was soggy and greasy. The turkey club had old lettuce. I have read many reviews on both Yelp and Google for this place, all highly rated so my first experience was lackluster so I gave it another shot and my 2nd time was just as bad. I've been to Free State more times than I can count and I cannot recall a bad experience. There have been times where the restaurant is packed and service slows down a bit but that is to be expected. Every waiter I've ever had has been pleasant! The restaurant has multiple seating areas with some overlooking Mass St. and the first floor of the restaurant which is cool. When I went the other day, a friend and I sat up there to enjoy a lunch. She ordered the Buffalo Chicken Quesadillas on special which looked delicious and I ordered the Greek Shrimp & Orzo Salad. Mine was to die for! I was so glad the waitress asked the kitchen about a half size because it was perfect. Since it was a lunch I didn't get a beer, but if I would've, it would be a Free State Guavatas Sour! Best sour beer in town. read more

After a long day of driving we arrived at our friends home in Lawrence and shortly thereafter headed downtown to the Free State Brewing Company for some beer and dinner. For my beer, I opted for their flagship brew, Ad Astra Amber Ale, an easy drinking, richly colored beer with a nice mouthfeel, fine carbonation, and frothy head -- a satisfying start to the evening. The menu was loaded with typical brew pub burgers and fried food, but also featured entrees like Hungarian Mushroom Goulash, Santiago Shrimp Linguine, Nashville Chicken Mac, and Jagerschnitzel & Mash. All sounded tempting, but as a fan of German food, I immediately decided to go with the schnitzel. When the food was delivered (after a perfectly reasonable amount of time), my initial reaction was disappointment -- because, strictly speaking -- the dish was not a schnitzel -- that is, it was not a breaded, fried pork cutlet, but rather, an un-breaded, pan seared, boneless pork loin chop. However, after my initial disappointment upon seeing it was not a traditional schnitzel, I dug in and was pleasantly surprised and satisfied with a pretty good dish. The pork cutlets were decently cooked and smothered with a rich gravy, filled with sautéed mushrooms and enhanced with a handful of sweetened tart cherries. The "mash" was a generous dollop of garlic mashed potatoes. A small mound of crispy deep fried shredded onions brought a crunchy element to the dish -- though they really didn't fit a German inspired dish in a cohesive manner. I wish the menu more accurately described the dish I ordered -- I'll lay the blame for that on the management -- but the food and beer were decent and I enjoyed my meal. Only my 2nd time trying this place and for the 2nd time it was just okay. Service was fine, maybe a bit slow at times but I don't know how many tables the server had. Restaurant was fine, seemed clean if crowded with tables and chairs close together. Food wasn't anything to brag about. I mean the fries were good but the main dishes were just okay. Except for the person who ordered the tortellini none of us would order what we got again. Came here on a business trip from San Diego. I wanted to see what's the favorite spots in Lawrence. This spot is legit. The food is excellent, service is very accommodating, and beer selection is great. The food menu has a lot of European takes to it which is awesome to complement the beers. It's very busy during dinner which tells me everyone goes here. I'm Filipino, so I had to try their Lumpia's (Filipino Egg rolls) here which is left field. It was good, but needed some improvements. Portion is kinda small and thin. It's needs shrimp mixed to it or add extra pork added to its thickness. The dipping sauce needs a little tad sweetness to it like honey to it to off set the tangy flavor. But I respect the take. However, I order their French dip sandwich. It was very delicious with the Au Jus sauce. You definitely need to order the Onion Rings on the side. Onions Rings was one of the best I had. read more

The service was quick but we never felt rushed. The menu was diverse with some good looking German options as well as some burgers and salads. The beer was really tasty. It was Saint Patrick's day weekend so I tried the special on tap which was an Irish beer. It was very good. I also got the goulash. It was not as flavorful as I had hoped. Was in town for the St. Patrick's Day parade, and decided to stop at all the local food favorites. You walk in and it almost feels like you're in an old bank. It's very open the ceilings are tall, and they have the tables divided up in a funky way by adding an upstairs in a few different places but still leaving the restaurant to have that open feel. When you come to freestate brewing, you always have to order the beer ale soup I love to add little bits of ciabatta into my soup. All of the bread is purchased from the local bakery wheatfields. Since it was St. Patrick's Day, I also ordered their Irish beer that they had on tap for the holiday. It was a light beer and fit the theme well. read more

I took my family of 16 to lunch at Free State Brewery during a family reunion to celebrate our Kansas and especially Lawrence root. I had tasted the Free State Beer offerings and had heard that they served good food. We were not disappointed! We were very well served by our server Sean, who handled the large party with grace, humor, and aplomb! Our orders were taken efficiently and served at the same time, not easy with 16, especially with 6 youngsters in the group. we had a good sampling of the fare: favorites were the loaded pretzel appetizer, the lager & mash, the black bean quesadilla, and the ham and swiss sandwich. We had 6 burgers, and the flavors were varied. The major drawback is that we did not request a level of coking, so they all came out medium. That's the only reason for a 4 rather than a 5 rating. We found the room we were given to be relatively private and quiet, and the restaurant was friendly. With spending about $64 on beers, the meal was (with 20% tip) about $450, or an average of $28/person, quite reasonable. read more

We were seated quickly even though it'd a Thursday night in college town. Had the sparkling cider spritz which was good especially if you like drinks that are only mildly sweet/bitter. I ordered the balsamic beet salad and my friend ordered the bison burger. Both plates were delicious. I also found my portions good. We ALWAYS stop at Free State when we are in Lawrence at games or appointments and we are always happy. My go-to is the Nashville hot chicken with Mac and cheese. If you love comfort food this is your meal! My daughter and friend order sandwiches and Larry melts and said they were "ok" Their beers are always good as well.
