This is the pizza of my drunk-college-student dreams! The thick, soft crust was perfect for absorbing alcohol and the pizza was delish when dipped in honey. There were more than a few occasions one or more of us would make a sticky honey mess, but it was totally worth it. I just had it again as a sober adult, and it is still pretty darn good classic pizza! They are generous with the cheese and have a nice, light sauce. Amazing post bar pizza, located underneath the bar is this hole in the wall, affordable, and immaculate environment. Getting a whole pizza from here can get somewhat expensive, but by the slice makes it worth it. Only eaten this after drinking, so I cannot give a true sober review. TBH, I have never tasted the Wheel Pizza sober, but I just can't imagine it being a disappointment! The crust is hand braided and fluffy. It has just the right amount of chewiness. The Pepperoni is my favorite! It's got a decent amount of toppings and it's just over $2 a slice! They have honey, which is a must on top! The honey is worth it, even though somehow I always end up covered in it! The staff who work the in the pizza booth are always super nice and will occasionally crack a pretty good joke! I highly recommend, it's definitely a Lawrence tradition! The bar that's on top of the pizza booth is a typical college bar, the walls are littered with graffiti and people signing their names! Post-chapter Monday night pitchers, Thursday night Bull-Hawk-Wheel adventures, games days, showing up in jeans and a Northface, showing up in a fancy dress after formals. I can only wonder how much money my friends and I spent playing Dixieland Delight, Don't Stop Believing and other sweet tunes on the jukebox. I can only imagine how many Sharpies we went through scrawling all over the walls...and ceilings. All in all, I miss the cheap prices, the feeling of walking in and knowing tons of people and the total, unabashed love for "College" (tm) that the Wheel embodies. read more

Do you ever find yourself stumped on how to explain something that means so much to you? There are so many words to describe the Wheel, but I just can't seem to find the best words to describe it. That's how I feel about The Wagon Wheel. As a Jayhawk and KU graduate myself, it's not a surprise that I have spent my fair share of alcohol soaked nights at one KU's iconic bar. Cheap shots, $2 beers, jukebox sing alongs...you name it - it happened at the Wheel. So many memories are flooding my brain as I write this review. Not condoning drinking past your limit of booze, I will say this place is not for light weights. They do have a delightful lunch, too. If you roll out of bed early enough! The Kappa burger is the favorite among Lawrence residents. Sure, it's the most aesthetically pleasing place, but it's where my college years happened. It's where I played, and kicked-ass might I add, Pac-Man. It's where friendships were made and then celebrated. Hell, it's where I spent my unforgettable 21st birthday. And, of course, there is the pizza. A simple, greasy slice of pizza for a whopping $1 always had your name on it around 2AM. And boy, pizza never tasted so good. read more

Going back now, much older than other college students, it's a lot better now than back then. One, this is one of the few places where you can go and not be the only not currently in school kid. I am honestly surprised with myself that I still have yet to write a review about the wheel. When I stop to think about it though it makes partial sense. Basically, you only eat the Wheel pizza when you're extremely intoxicated and have just stumbled your way across the street from the legendary Jayhawk Cafe to grad a slice. The wheel pizza is not the type of pizza you find yourself craving when you're too lazy to cook dinner that night. It is the basic of basics. For 2.25 you can get yourself a slice of heaven, or what the drunk undergrad would consider heaven at 1:45 Am on a Wednesday night. The shop sits below the historic Wheel bar, and is frequented most often by the undergraduate population on the weekends. The wheel has a large patio that is connected to the pizza shop that gets pretty full on game days with alumni and Greek life hanging out before the game. The shop it self is small and run down. One room, just big enough to fit a half dozen college kids at a time. The room has bar where you can place your order and recieve within seconds a cheaply thrown together piece of a pizza thats been sitting in a warming rack for an hour or so. It's cheap pizza, both in price and quality. That being said, it is a tradition and a rite of passage for any kid who has had the pleasure of attending The University of Kansas. So, while I wouldnt recommend heading over to the wheel to grab some pizza next time you're getting that familiar craving, I would still recommend giving it a go at least once. As a tip, it helps if you have a few drinks under your belt before you head over there. I give it four stars because of it's history, culture, and the tradition that the wheel pizza has become. read more

the more beers you had inside the better the pizza tastes however, it might not be the best pizza but it reminds me of all things good. A slice of wheel pizza always completed our nights out and made the walk back to kappa so much shorter! Pizza crust is always soft and thick - overall it is worth the wait! There are three options -- cheese, pepperoni or beef (slice or whole pie) -- and ranch costs a quarter. Any new freshman will surely stop by Wheel Pizza at least once during their first semester, and those that live near the Bull-Hawk-Wheel triangle will likely eat Wheel Pizza on a weekly basis. As a result, the Surgeon General has declared Wheel Pizza as a leading cause of the Freshman 15 at KU. Okay, so I'm kidding, but it's hard to argue that Wheel Pizza has decimated the figures of many a freshman. Wheel Pizza is amazing. Made my first trip out to Lawrence to catch a KUMBB game for the first time ever on my birthday with a few friends. We decided to go in and try this place out and didn't even make it in the door! I get that it's a college town and we look young, but when we are all in our 30's and the "bar owner" starts yelling at your lady for accidentally walking past you at the door (which you show no representation or say anything as we were already walking in) and I ask you politely to chill out there's no need to yell, I can grab her. And this "bar owner" turns and starts yelling at me next. We turned and walked out. The bar owner was a drunken ass hat and I made sure I let him know how immature he was as a bar owner as we stepped outside (but he was drunk and thought he was right about how he's running his business). I get that it's a college town and we have no problem showing an ID but when you start yelling angrily for someone walking past you at the door when you're not asking for IDs and just standing there like a drunken idiot what do you expect. read more

I've been hearing about The Wagon Wheel for nearly four years and have been anxious to see if this dive bar lived up to expectations. As an alum of University of Arizona and huge fan of Dirtbags (our equivalent to The Wagon Wheel), I can appreciate the nostalgia that a KU graduate feels about a bar that they frequented through all the ups and downs of college. The Wagon Wheel lived up to the hype I had been hearing and I can appreciate this bar almost as much as the alumni who spent four years here. The Wagon Wheel is divey, a little smelly, pretty crowded but filled with the character, history and charm of a truly great college bar. The walls are filled with signatures and phrases written by college students from over the years. The tables are lined with KU branding. The crowd includes everyone from drunken undergrads to alumnae that probably graduated in 40's and every age in between. When we were there, a group of women walked in and started chanting at the top of their lungs "class of '92!" It was a great moment both for the women and for the bar goers witnessing it. It's filled with every walk of life and everyone is having an amazing time. The drinks are cheap but cash only so stock up at the bank before you arrive. The food is bar food but don't expect an KU student or grad to say that the food is anything less than spectacular. It could be the alcohol or the nostalgia talking but KU folks love the Wang Burger. read more

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU! Best place to visit if you are looking for the college bar in Lawrence. It is a little older more alumni crowd on game days and more of your average basic college student the rest of the days. They have a wang burger which I didn't get but everyone was saying it was good. I thought they had surprisingly good service for as many people as were there. I also like how they had Mizzou, CU, and A&M already crossed out in their Big 12 mural. read more
