Brandon encouraged me to stop by on my way the next day and stay a night, and I ended up staying for several. I was slightly skeptical of the town at first having never been here before; but, once I pulled in, I was blown away by the beauty and ambiance; not only of the town, but the landscape as it's nestled in a small valley between 2 mountains. I had just spent the previous 5hrs driving Bear-Tooth Pass from Red Lodge which is normally a 3hr drive. It was such a breathtaking scenic pass that it took me 5hrs with all the stops I made for pictures. Bear Tooth Pass ends in Cooke City, and is only about 3mi outside the NE entrance of Yellowstone. High Country Motel offers quick easy access to Lamar valley. It is not far from Lamar's rolling pastures filled with immense herds of buffalo and high mountain peaks where Mt. Goats can be seen grazing mountain meadows, you'll need binoculars to see them, as they are quite high. The cabins are clean with a full kitchen. The town is super cool and quaint, with an old-world vibe and architecture. It is a VERY small historic town, with just a couple gas stations, a few restaurants, bars, shops, and a general store, but has everything you need. You can walk to everything the town has to offer from HCM. There is also a gift shop on site in the HCM office where you can purchase cold craft beers, sodas, energy drinks, water, snacks, and souvenirs. I still wear my HCMCC flat-bill hat every day. The views from my cabin were remarkable, Brandon and his staff were exceptionally kind and fun people. Highly recommend staying here for your Yellowstone vacation, it is super convenient to explore and access the park from High County Motel.

The owner greeted us by saying, 'bad news, the power is out'. Here's my issue with this: 1. Be transparent about the potential of a power outage on your website. I read every single FAQ and email that was sent when I booked and there was zero mention of this possibility - which I later found happens more often than the owner let on. 2. The second the power goes out, attempt to reach to your guests to let them know. It gives them time to make any adjustments, so they aren't scrambling when they get there. 3. If you are about to tell your guests they will be inconvenienced with no power, don't inconvenience them further by making them hunt for the person whose checking them in. 4. If you are an individual living in an isolated community where the power goes out on occasion, that's fine, that's your choice. But - if you are managing a business where the power goes out, you need to have a plan to ensure PAYING guests are as comfortable as possible. Just saying 'this is life in the mountains' is unacceptable. 5. Have a kit ready for your guests with: - Flashlights (guests shouldn't have to use their smart phone flashlight to use the bathroom) - A lighter if guests have rented a unit with a stove (at least this gives them an option to heat some water or food on the stove) - Instant coffee/tea, cup of soup, granola bars (simple and inexpensive but shows you care about their comfort) - Extra blankets. (It still got into the 30's overnight in June) 6. Have an emergency power source supported by a generator or solar panels located in the office so guests can charge cell phones if needed. 7. Don't have units that require electricity to lock the doors. We couldn't lock our door from the outside. 8. This is the most important: discount the rate of the unit if your guests can't use everything they paid for. We paid for a full kitchen, laundry, TV, wifi, shower - yet we couldn't use any of these things and we were charged full price before we checked in. This was glorified camping at a ridiculous rate. You can do better, you know you can do better. Honestly put yourself in your guests shoes and ask if you would have been okay with this.

I expected very modest accommodations, YET, I also expected WiFi service, since it is listed as one of the amenities. HOWEVER, while there is in fact WiFi service, the connection is so POOR that you can't even access email to send or receive. As the restaurants in town provide WiFi service (with excellent connectivity), Alpine Motel should invest in better equipment to provide what they advertise. Room was clean with plenty of hot water and shower had good pressure. Lighting on room was only fair. TV did not offer any premium access to neither Prime nor Netflix.

The Lamar has everything a family could need including a great kitchen for making memorable meals (I love to cook and found all the supplies I needed), ample space for hanging out with and without your family, and all the modern conveniences travelers expect (there's even Wifi). The dining area provided a wonderful start to the day with a cup of coffee and a gorgeous view of the mountains. The propane grill off the back deck made dinnertime easy.
