Consistency is a huge issue with this place. During the day, the customer service and speed of service is exceptional. To be honest, the quantity of food seems less than industry standard for a much higher price than average. I have no problem with very pricy bills so long as it is backed up by the product. Creative menu items certainly help the insultingly high prices. The beer is what makes this place great! If you're a beer connoisseur I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you simply appreciate a nice high quality local beer, you can't go wrong only ordering drinks with minimal appetizers. If you go late at night, don't waste your money!! The food speed of service is incredibly slow considering a lack of customers. The staff inappropriately prioritizes flirting with each other and goofing around in the back and closed off parts of the store that no one actually serves customers. Can take up to 30 minutes to get someone's attention to order a second beer with your spicy meal. Also, it's very common for the doors to be locked either staff members inside during posted business hours. You do need to pull the door with some force on a windy night. Having said this, me and my friends have been told by staff that they were closed 3-4 hours before the posted business hours. Management would do well to monitor the staff more closely late at night as it really is a stylish bar to get a good pint. read more

Having read other reviews I was a bit apprehensive about going to Big Rig. Don't get me wrong, I love a good brewpub but the comments about the food and service left a lot to be desired. Regardless my girlfriend and I decided to trek out here on a Saturday night for some beer and pub fare and we were not disappointed. We arrived around 7:00 and the place was full, fortunately the wait wasn't long, and the bar is right next to the Maitre D stand (and within earshot) so we could pitch up at the bar and order beers while we waited. After about 15 minutes we got our table. We first ordered an appetizer of thai chili mussels which were most excellent while for main course I got an excellent Jambalaya. It had shrimp, lobster, and sausage in it with vegetables on a bed of rice. The sauce was really excellent and it had the right amount of spice. My girlfriend had a shrimp bowl, which was essentially a stir fry with shrimp and veggies that she really liked. The beer of is also excellent, I had a really good English Style Brown Ale called Byward Brown. It's quite smooth and malty with strong nutty and coffee flavours. My second was a HefeWeiss, for the uninitiated that is a German style wheat beer that had vanilla and banana notes, also a very tasty brew. My girlfriend had the Big Rig Gold, their flagship lager. That one wasn't nearly as good, I found it a bit bland and watery but it isn't a bad beer by any means, I would just recommend their other beers over it. The service was also good, although I found that it could be a bit sporadic at times. The best I can say is that they did their job professionally and courteously, but I wasn't super blown away by any means. This average service, along with the prices (which were kinda steep) costs Big Rig a 5 star rating, but I would definitely go back and would recommend it to others. read more

So my second visit here and my opinion is still just so so. Beer excellent-food-well just ok. Orders started and they were missing a number of the items on the menu-although they did comp the deep fried pickles because of this and they were delicious so +2 stars, however my so called lager battered onion rings were not fresh, and clearly frozen-they were cold in the middle-I didn't eat them. The burger I had was big but boring-sounded way better than it tasted-was very dry and flavorless. Came here on a Monday evening around 7 to a fairly empty restaurant. Was seated in the bar booth area, perfect spot to watch Monday night football. We ordered quick and got the 'colossal' burger with sweet potatoes fries & a salad with chicken. The burger was as described - massive, a ton of meat, and basically a heart attack on a bun. The fries were amazing, though. Seriously, some of the best sweet fries I've ever had. And they give you enough to feed 5 people. But of course you'll eat them all. My in-laws had us choose a place for dinner last week. My husband chose this place primarily because it's close to home (we'd be bringing our three young children), but also because he wanted to sample the beer. I wasn't particularly thrilled to be going here because the week it opened, we were a bit less than thrilled with the takeout we'd ordered from here, and because of the mediocre reviews, but since the place is kind of new, I decided it would be fair to give it another chance, and I am glad we did! Out of the six meals we'd ordered, every single one of them was deemed a winner. My husband had the small Quattro Carne pizza and thought it was awesome. He was stuffed after half, it was THAT big and filling! I had the Grilled Portobello and Roasted Red Pepper sandwich. It could have used a little more pesto, but was otherwise very tasty. I had it with the soup of the day which happened to be a nice chunky cream of broccoli soup. It also came with a vinegar coleslaw on the side which was ok. I took home half of my meal as well, as it was so large. Our kids had the fish and chips and the mini burgers with veggies. Both enjoyed their meals very much. My in-laws had the General Toa's Ginger Chicken and the Indian Butter Chicken. Both had great things to say about their meals and said they would definitely order these items again. Finally, and probably most importantly, beer. My husband and his father order the Big Rig Sampler and chose the Gold, Red and two seasonals: ESB and Hefeweizen. All were thoroughly enjoyed, especially the gold by my husband, and the Hefeweizen by my father-in-law. We are hoping to get back soon to try their new seasonal, pumpkin! We were placed at a table next to the brewery, which was visible via giant windows, and it just happened to be cleaning time, so it was quite entertaining to watch them spray down the equipment! After reading many reviews, I decided to go to Big Rig on Tuesday night with my boyfriend and a friend. Our service was exceptional, however, our food.. Not so much. It wasn't bad.. It just wasn't good. It definitely was not worth the prices that we paid. It was dark and loud inside, I could barely read my menu. I got a classic cheeseburger with a gluten free bun. Like I said, it was okay but not something I would come back for. My boyfriend got the wings.. 2lbs for over $20? Jeeeze. Overpriced! He didn't end up finishing them, he didn't like them. And he's an avid wing lover. Our friend didn't get anything to eat. In conclusion, I wouldn't go back. I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you're going to catch up with a friend or have a discussion of any form. The one great thing was the service - our server was nice and friendly! read more

Went here for the first time tonight with my wife and our 12 yr old twins. Sat in the bar/lounge area and it was very loud. Not a big deal but it was loud enough to note it. We waited a long time to get served and even longer for our drinks. Had their Gold, which was ok, but it was pretty much the highlight of the meal. Had the wings, and the potstickers for apps, mediocre at best. I had their spicy blue burger and it was pretty good. The fries seemed fresh, as opposed to other reviews written on here. Atmosphere was good and the place was nice and clean. Food was mediocre to marginal...nothing special. Service was bad. Long waits and poor attention. I don't need someone looking over my shoulder while I eat but I do appreciate the server checking in on things a couple of times. Te last time I was there I really enjoyed the Thai Curry Mussels and although they don't Pizza Marguerite, the Philly Cheese steak was a nice compromise. Let me start off by mentioning that I am a pretty much a pizza fanatic on a mission to find the best pizza in Ottawa. I always have to try the pizza in the cities or countries that I visit around the world. I've been in Ottawa for 8 years or so and have yet to find one that stands out...until now. Big Rig's pizza is very very good especially if you like Montreal/Ottawa style pizza. The cheese is pretty outstanding and actually has a true mozzarella taste. The pepperoni was also particularly good. I preferred the pepperoni pizza over the four meat because I felt like all those meats masked the flavour of the cheese. They don't cheap out on the toppings either, it's quite filling and it takes work to finish a small by yourself. I would definitely recommend trying the pizza here and I will be back. read more

I have to say, my love for big rig has recently faded. This used to be my go-to place for drinks with the girls, or hanging out with friends - something has changed in the last few months, and it's not just the menu. Once upon a time, the prices were fair, and the food and service was extraordinary. Now, the prices have all skyrocketed and the service has tanked. I know often when a second location is moved, the more senior staff move there to get things up and running, but it's so disappointing. Want dessert? Your eyes are not tricked when you see a $20 cookie on the menu. Is the cookie great? Yes. Is it worth $20? No. It's a skillet cookie. Big Rig is a nice addition to our options in Ottawa (though it's a bit of a trek to its location). This is the best place in the city to go with a big group of people for decent food and beer that's sure to please everyone in your party. They sport a large patio in the summer, and are clearly the best option if you're looking to dine in the immediate vicinity of Ikea. Anyway, we got to try a large selection of dishes from the menu at an Elite event in December, and I have to say I was impressed. There are a lot of interesting twists from your average pub food - a favourite of mine was the buffalo chicken dip. There's also some more mainstream stuff that's done well, but not exceptional, like the fried pickles or the poutine. The pizza is surprisingly good. Maybe not surprising to many people, but I'm always iffy about pizza on a menu... sure, it won't be *bad*, but will it be so good that you don't end up wishing you'd ordered something else if it's not a pizza place? Here, you don't have to worry - the pizzas we've tried have been great, and the buffalo chicken pizza is a lot more interesting than you'd think - one of my favourite pizzas we've had in Ottawa. (And yes, I may be a bit of a sucker for buffalo chicken, but I think anyone who doesn't mind some spice will enjoy that pizza). Oh, and the beer, of course! All of the beers are brewed by Big Rig, and they're all solid, but not outstanding. I find their Gold (the most popular beer) to be very boring, but it won't offend anyone who's not sure about trying fancy beers. The stout is tasty, but the IPA wasn't quite hoppy enough to earn the label. The star on the beer list last time we visited was the black IPA. The service we've received on our visits has always been, again, good but not outstanding. Based on the quality of food, beer, and service, if this was a small restaurant I'd give it a very solid three stars. The fact that it offers so many options for this level of drinking and dining and can accommodate big groups pushes it over the top to four. As someone who is a big believer in "making meals count," I don't worry about finding something I'll enjoy when we go to Big Rig. read more

My fiance suggested we go since we were in the area and I had been wanting to try Big Rig for awhile being a huge fan of the Ottawa Senators. The atmosphere was lovely. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Dip for a starter, which was good. What I liked is that along with the tortilla chips for dipping, they had a few sticks of celery which managed to go well with the dip and cool down the spice a little bit. For our mains, I ordered the Parmesan Crusted Chicken & Gouda sandwich, and my fiance ordered the Mac and Cheese and got a side ramekin of the Parmesan dipping sauce for the pizza which he poured on top of the Mac and Cheese. I tried a bit of it and it was delicious. I was a little less satisfied with my meal. I enjoyed the soup I'd ordered as my side (Their soup of the day: Chicken & Leek with Barley) more than the sandwich, but it wasn't awful. Overall, it's a great place with a fairly affordable gourmet-type menu. Also, that beer is pretty darn good. I really enjoy their beers I have had most on the Menu even the IPA which I am never a fan of. The service is wonderful always helpful and efficient. They are usually quite cheerful and will come by for a chat when is is quiet. The food is well - expensive. But they actually have a delicious pizza which is usually what we order in groups. The other item menu's tend to be hit or miss and usually more expensive than they should be. I come for the beer and stay for the atmosphere - great on game nights (Sens) but as a huge football fan I was quite upset that they would rather air a midseason sens game than the AFC championship game - but I have to be picky about something right??? I often take advantage of their "after beer store hours" to stock my fridge. Wonderful place for a pint with your beer drinking buddies. The desserts are woeful. read more

It's funny/unfortunate that each time I go here my impression of them has gone down each time. Hopefully that changes because I'd like to go more often as they are close to where I live. The first time I visited this place, I was with two friends and ordered a pizza and their beer. The food, service, and environment were great. (Pizza was pretty darn good). The second time I visited was with a larger group and as we were sitting by the windows, I found the food the same (still ordered pizza) but the service and environment wasn't as nice (service was off and it just felt loud and uncomfortable compared to our first visit where we sat in a booth). The third time I went we sat at the bar and ordered a smoked meat sandwich. This time it was the food that was off. My friend had heard good things about their smoked meat sandwich but mine was on stale bread and was just disappointing. That being said, I will still go back at least once more to see how it goes since their aren't that many good pubs in the Nepean area (Grace O'Malley's is closed down now :-( ). TIP: Parking here can be difficult and it can be crazy busy. Suggest to arrive early. If on the weekend, I've heard you can park across the street at the gov't buildings. I met friends for dinner here (with my toddler in tow) the other night. It was extremely busy -- actually a full house-- on a weekday evening at 6:30pm. I'm glad I had thought to make a reservation! (Also, finding parking in their lot was a bit of a challenge and I circled around several times, but luckily a spot opened up just as someone was leaving.) While I didn't have any drinks, I thought the food was really well done. Everything was quite tasty and presented in huge portions, but along with that I found prices a tad on the expensive side. I ordered the roasted chicken panini that came on really soft yet hearty sunflower bread. The sandwich was stuffed with huge chunks of chicken, and the roasted red peppers and lemon aioli complemented everything perfectly. The accompanying side salad containing feta, candied pecans, and green apples, was delectable. My friends' dishes (fish tacos, chicken wings, and pizza) all looked fantastic. My son's kiddie meal was equally good. The junior hamburger was well-seasoned and the mashed potatoes had a nice garlicky kick to it. The only unfortunate thing was that they ran out of the fruit salad that came along with it, which my son would have really enjoyed, and did not offer to substitute anything for it. At $7.99, and with a glass of milk for $3.99, I thought his meal somewhat overpriced especially since dessert was not included. It's a great casual space to meet friends but it can get quite noisy in there. As mentioned, I was a bit surprised by the expense: $34 (before tip) for my son and I. I like Big Rig even though I don't go often. They introduced a decent size gluten free menu which includes these crispy chicken pieces and pizza. The topping and cheese on the pizza were adequate and they didn't skimp on the cheese which is one of my biggest pet peeves. Service is average. My husband absolutely loves the Big Rig red ale and we also bring a jug home. The restaurant is always clean, bar staff friendly and the (owners/or managers?) are really nice. A group of us met up for the yelp pizza committee, twelve or so of us I think. We sat over in the corner on the bar side, which was nice location for a group. Rebecca was our server and she was excellent. Everyone had various appetizers and ordered their pizzas at various times but everything went off without a hitch. I had the deep fried pickles to start and they were pretty good, although after having them at the Atrim T.S. the price is hard to swallow. Fortunately it wasn't me who did the swallowing, thanks again Andrea! For the pizza I went with the meat one, quarto carne I think it's called. Regular crust. It was great. Pizza has to be one of the best things on the menu, if not the best. I succumed to peer pressure and demolished the entire small. Though it took some work to get the whole thing down, it's quite filling. As to the beer, I went with what seems to be becoming my ole faithful, Scotch Ale. It was as good as always. This group dinner went off splendidly so if you're looking for a place for a group don't hesitate to give Big Rig a shot. read more

We went here the first time quite by accident, as we were cruising by and happened to be hungry. Upon arriving, at peak hours I might add, we were seated immediately and proceeded to receive exemplery customer service by friendly staff throughout the entire visit. Although our expectations weren't the highest at the outset, the food was spectacular. The pizzas are phenomenal, and are easily enough for two meals. The meal sized salad was also very tasty, and a great sized portion as well. The first experience was so positive that we have been back several times since. We had a business lunch here so no alcohol for us. Found this by accident as we decided we were hungry. Very cool place. Started with spicy fried pickles. Very good. My colleague had the Big Rig Turkey dinner and he said it was great. I had the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. So if you are a Philly purist you may stick your nose up but this was very good. Thick (2-3 times thicker than traditional) cut steak, grilled onions and peppers with a cheddar cheese sauce on a decent grilled and buttered sub roll. It was very filling and I was looking for a place to rest after eating the whole thing. Their fires that came with it were also good. Check this place out of you are around. My first time at Big Rig and I will go back! I am not a big beer drinker but I was at brewery so I figured why not. I tried the big rig gold and it was excellent. We had deep fried pickled which were awesome and burgers. I really enjoyed my burger it had tons of topping and was really juicy. It was a great size for the price. My brother also had a burger but he felt it need sauce he mentioned it was a little dry. This place has a great atmosphere and super friendly service but I will say it was a little slow. If you want to over pay for mediocre food, this is the place to go. My wife had the Shepards Pie which is $17 and it honestly looked like one of those singles servings you'd get at M&M's. Only not near as good. Really small and really looks sad as its served in a disposable tin mini pie plate. I had the pad Thai and something was definitely off. I only ate some of it and got the rest to go but we had a couple of stops and ended up throwing it out as it was stinking up the car. We discovered this place by fluke on the day after it opened. It is, in a word, AWESOME! Forgive the hyperbole, but it is truly the best eatery I have had the pleasure to eat at in Ottawa (and many other Canadian cities). First the beer - gourmet and brewed on the premises: Gold, Red, Brown, India Pale, and Stout. You can get it by the pint, or a four-beer sampler. My favs are the Red and Brown - very tasty, without killing the palate. Delish. Next, the food: a TRIUMPH! Imagine a mix of traditional pub food and 5-star gourmet. My wife and I split the #4: a burger (with saracha mayo? what? what?) with grilled cheese sandwiches in place of a bun. And, the sandwiches were aged cheddar and herb, not simply Kraft singles. We also had a side of the BEST sweet potato fries ever. EVER! My only fear is that the owners are splashing out on the great food now, but will gradually replace it with dregs later....you know, like every other Canadian restaurant. For hockey fans, this place is owned by Ottawa Senators D Chris Phillips - we even saw him at the restaurant. He doesn't look that tough....JK! But, I am NOT kidding about this place. I have been going to Big Rig for a few years and have always loved the beer, food, and service. I have NEVER had any issues with the food and have never complained. Today, I decided to try something different and ordered the Jambalaya at a cost of $24. The waitress who was an exceptional server, brought my plate of Jambalaya to my table. It looked very good. I started eating it and was looking for the lobster that was supposed to be included in the mix. Well, If there was lobster in the mix, I certainly didn't see it. I ate about half if the meal and decided to eat the rest of my wife's checked Gouda sandwich instead. The waitress came over and asked how I liked the Jambalaya and I hesitantly told her I didn't like it. I then quired about the lobster that was stated on the menu. A few minutes later, Dave, the day manager, came over and made a statement that he looked at the prepackaged contents and said there was lobster included but not very much and the lobster us very small. He offered a discount for the meal. I said thank-you and got my bill. I have been a regular customer at Big Rig and drop by at least 3 to 4 times a week. I usually order the mussels, pizza, wings, and onion soup. I have never complained about anything. Today, I am insulted that the manager didn't compensate me for the entire cist if the Jambalaya. He did provide me with a 50% discount but I expected a full refund as most seasoned managers would do at a restaurant. After I paid my bill, I went straight to the bar and said goodbye to my favorite bartender, Sasha, and told her I won't be back. Having been here three times now I am sad to say I can only give it two stars. One visit was for breakfast, eggs were cold, order was wrong and it wasn't any better than a diner breakfast you can get for half the price. Maybe I will go next door to Ikea for the dollar breakfast or whatever it is, lol. The other two visits were sitting at the bar for food and sampling the beers. A few of their beers are quite good, I like their flagship beer but the stout was lacking, lacked a creamy head and lost its fullness by the time pint was half done, didn't finish it. Burgers etc.. are ok but nothing special. I have to say the pizza looked pretty good but have yet to try it so that may bump them up to a three. One of the bartenders is quite friendly and engaging but a few of the others seem more interested in chatting with their friends and staff at the bar instead of keeping an eye on anything the patrons neeed, I'm sorry, but if you have to flag down the bartender to order another beer when there are only five people at the bar they aren't doing their job ( as a former bartender, this is an annoyance) Also, considering this is a brewery they are fairly uninspired about explaining the beers, seasonal specials etc.. The place has potential but they need to step up their game, you can only rely on the fact that Chris Phillips is a partner for so long which is a draw but people will eventually lose interested. Luckily for them there is no nearby competition so they should do ok, if they were located in the Market they would have an uphill batte. I will go back and try the pizza and keep my fingers crossed that other areas have improved. read more
