The hummus and pita with hot honey and feta was pretty good, and our son loved his pasta dish from the kids menu, but that was the extent of the magic here. The paninis the rest of our party ordered were again, just ok. When I went to the restroom I was appalled. There was some really gross stuff sticking to the wall next to the toilet; I couldn't tell if it was barf or poop, but it really turned me off. Good thing we were already on our way out. The atmosphere is kind of a New Orleans vibe with a high ceiling and covered terrace upstairs with plants that you can see from the downstairs area. That was nice. The day before when I was walking around the Plaza, they had a big carafe of fruit-infused ice water outside the restaurant with plastic cups for people to help themselves to, and it was super refreshing. That was the best thing about this place.

I worked on a landscape inspired by the hills of Taos, and what really stood out wasn't just the painting itself--it was how the whole evening felt. Laura and Mickey are wonderful teachers. They guide you step by step in a way that's clear and supportive, but never rigid. There's a real encouragement to follow your own vision, to experiment, and to not take it all too seriously. It creates this relaxed, creative energy where you can actually enjoy the process instead of worrying about getting it "right." The whole space feels warm and welcoming, and it's easy to settle in and just paint. By the end of the night, I felt both proud of what I made and inspired to keep going. If you're looking for a fun, supportive place to explore painting, I'd definitely recommend checking out a class here.

As I understand it, the actually vineyards are south of Santa Fe but, we stopped by the tasting room and split a tasting (about $7, if memory serves). We tried a delightful Chardonnay which was light a crisp. Next was a red that had a little spice to it, not surprising considering the area. Finally, we had a Zinfandel Port which was really impressive. The tasting room itself is not much to mention. Its functional and offers the usual books and spouts and aprons you might find in another tasting room. The bathrooms look like they were lifted from a Getty station. The man offering the tastings was pleasant and knowledgeable. If you like wine and are in the area. See what's offered away from the West Coast. You might be pleased as we were.

We attended the ceremonial dancing on Saturday morning. We only stayed for one dance, which…read moreprobably lasted over an hour and I would guess there were 200-300 dancers and singers. The costumes were outstanding. The children were all dressed like their parents. We were not allowed to take any pictures, as it was a spiritual thing to them. It was warm and after dancing that long some of them were dragging, I do commend them for the quality and dedication they gave to the dance. I believe it was a dance for good crops, maybe corn. And later in the day it rained, which is rare in this part of the world.

This was a day we made lemonade after a storm and surprise closures changed our plans…read more Los Luceros was mentioned in my guidebook as a 'hidden gem' and was conveniently located south of Espanola on the way to Santa Fe. It is a recently designated New Mexico Historic Site (2019), so it provided a nice selection of places to visit on the 148-acre property. We started and ended in the on-site museum and I do recommend the introduction video that gives a brief history of the people (it is ancestral Tewa land) that have inhabited this land over the past few centuries. It is a level walk on an unpaved path to visit most of the buildings and to walk along the Rio Grande River. The most interesting building during our visit was the small Capilla (chapel) with a depiction of saints (and who/what they protect) on the walls. The largest building at the site is the Territorial-style Hacienda, which is currently being refurbished and scheduled to reopen in the Spring of 2025. While there wasn't a ton for us to do, we really appreciated the stroll through the property among the cottonwood trees and the easy pace of life. This is a site geared toward nature and education and they frequently host school groups and families. If we lived in the area with younger children, this would be a frequent picnic spot. Leashed dogs are permitted on the property, but not in the historic buildings. They have a small herd of Navajo Churro sheep and they hold sheep shearing events twice a year. The entire visit was a lovely step back in time. Admission: $7 adults and free for children 16 and under. It is part of the New Mexico CulturePass Program.
