recently stayed at Big Sur Campground and Cabins and was very disappointed with the value for the price. I paid approximately $576 for each campsite and I got two campsites, and I expected a much better experience for that cost. The campground was extremely overcrowded. The campsites were so small and tightly packed together that it felt like one campsite had been divided into two just to fit more guests and increase revenue. There was very little privacy, and the overcrowding took away from the natural beauty of Big Sur. Instead of feeling peaceful, the campground felt congested and, at times, looked unkempt because there were simply too many people in such a limited space. Another major concern was the cleanliness of the restrooms. Throughout our stay, the bathrooms frequently had toilet paper on the floors and were not maintained to the standard I would expect, especially considering the premium price of the campground. The amenities also did not meet expectations. The campground advertises complimentary firewood and ice, which sounds like a great benefit. However, guests are limited to one bundle of firewood and one bag of ice per day. While this may be enough for some campers, the advertising makes it seem more generous than it actually is. Big Sur is one of the most beautiful places in California, and I was excited to stay here. Unfortunately, the overcrowding, lack of cleanliness, and high price made the experience feel like poor value. I don't mind paying premium prices for a premium experience, but this campground did not deliver one. Sadly, I don't think I would choose to stay here again, and I hope management will consider reducing overcrowding, improving restroom maintenance, and being more transparent about what is included with the campsite. read more

I'm only not giving this place 4 stars because of the rude staff we encountered when checking in and asking questions. The curly haired girl with glasses at the check-in area seemed just frustrated and annoyed by us as we pulled in and tried to get out of the way of others checking in. I guess they tried to tell us to wait but it was busy and I didn't hear and wanted to make sure I wasn't blocking others, so I pulled in and parked a bit. I was immediately turned off by the rudeness and didn't feel welcome as she yelled at me and told me she was trying to get me to stop. She told me to go to my site and get set up and come back and was just incredibly cranky and mean about it. Also, it would have been nice to be warned about the MANY skunks that come out at sunset and run around the campground looking for food. We are in nature after all, but even state parks warn you of current wildlife! They were so tame that I don't think they even sprayed but it def was concerning with two dogs in tow. Otherwise, the campsites are gorgeous and it's very peaceful. The free ice, one bundle of firewood, and mugs were incredibly generous and the river swimming areas are unmatched! Bathrooms were small and crowded but mostly clean and nice they had shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the women's! But, expect a long line in the morning and for bed for the sinks with the next bathroom quite a ways away. I'd definitely stay here again but suggest the staff try to be a little less cranky and more welcoming! Big Sur is magical and the energy of the workers should match that. read more

We stayed here about a long time ago and my wife surprised me with a 3 day getaway recently. There are many options to choose from: tents, RV parking, A-frames, small cabins, and larger cabins. She chose a riverside cabin and this place made such a strong impression we remembered it was right next to the cabin with a loft our friends stayed at the first time we came about a decade ago. There is no cellular signal here so you'll be without internet, the only WiFi available is near the entrance and there is a $20 fee, if you are desperate there are some pockets of reception going south on highway one but we took the opportunity to disconnect and enjoy fire, nature, and each others company instead. You'll know when you get reception because your phone will start going crazy. The riverside cabin had an outdoor pit and indoor wood burning stove so you get fire inside and out, the river is right outside and if you go down at night it's creepy. We loved the clean bedrooms and cozy living room, most of our time indoors was spent in the living room hanging around near the fire. We ate most of our meals at the cabin and it felt private and quiet though there were other people staying next to us, the shower had insane water pressure and flow and it was nice not having to sleep smokey and dirty every night. There are basic kitchen utensils, cups, plates, and pans. I don't know why we expected this but there is no salt or pepper so make sure to bring your own! Firewood is also marked up and we always use more than we think so better to buy from farther away, they provide 1 free bundle and we brought 5 and still ended up using all of it. read more

Add a dog run. Add concrete, grass, pebbles or mulch on RV campsites so the spot won't be so muddy and one can enjoy the spot with pets and kids instead of tracking in mud and playing in the mud. Lower price or add suggested accommodations to make it enjoyable and comfortable. We rented our spot for two nights but left after the hour of getting there due to the mud conditions. We and our dogs were not happy campers there. We will not return there until we see improvements regarding muddy grounds. read more

This campground was perfect for our group of 29 people (12 adults and 17 kids)! Kids ranging from 6-12 years old. There was something to do for everyone. The campground has a playground, basketball court, the creek/river to float down and a swim hole. It was nice to disconnect for a bit (no wifi except near the entrance for a fee). The 2 bed cabin was perfect for our family of four. Definitely recommend staying at this campground when in Big Sur. read more

The place is nice and cozy but I'm giving 1 star for RUDE STAFF Definitely NOT A "friendly place" as advertised in their website! the curly hair young looking lady staff who was at the office today yelling at my kid for using inner tube and not specifically returning it at the end of the day assume it was explained to us that the tubes shouldn't be at the campsite overnight! This wasn't explained to us when he checked in lady! You did not even bother asking. I want my kids to have a good camping relaxing experience but was ruined by this lady! We really enjoyed our stay here and honestly didn't want to leave! We even asked about staying an extra night, but they were fully booked. Thankfully, the kind lady at the office remembered us, and when someone checked out early, she saved the spot for us--we were super grateful for that kind gesture. The campground is clean, and the cabins were spotless, which I really appreciated. One of the highlights for me was the location right on the river, and for my daughter, it was the playground--she had an absolute blast! It is a bit pricey for a campground, but considering the cleanliness, location, and family-friendly vibe, it was worth it for us. We love Big Sur Campground & Cabins! When you check in you're given two mugs, and a bundle of wood, if you need more they are stocked. $14.00/bundle. They have a small store with the basics, we actually needed a longer hose for our trailer to connect to water and they had one for sale. The staff is helpful and friendly, the restrooms were clean and the showers were stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The creek was so much fun, we had our own tubes but the campground does have them for use. Very kid friendly atmosphere. You're definitely close to other campers but everyone seemed respectful and the grounds were quiet at night. Big Sur is a very special place and I was shocked at how crowded it's become, but I am happy to share my love for this special place with my child. Oh, they have coffee in the morning! This campsite is really nice but please be warned that the prices are really high. It's not like any other campsite. it's $150-$180 a night to rent a space. They also charge $5 per person after 2 people per site and can only have up to 5 people or they will make you get another camp site. You can also only have 1 car or be charged $15 for an extra car per night. $20 per night for WiFi. Absolutely insanely priced. The service is also lacking, they do not seem very keen to help anyone. No warning of wild life living in the campground, there's a family of skunks and raccoons. Obviously if we're staying in the wilderness I know there's a chance of that but it would be nice if they mentioned it. read more

Do not be late on your check-in. If you do, there would be written instructions on where you should go, but you have to come back in the morning to finish your check-in. There is little to no signal in the campgrounds. It's great, especially if you're trying to get away from all the hustle and bustle from the city. By the toll gate, you check in and get your bundle of wood. Any extra is $10. They'll give you a map on how to get around to your spot, but it's pretty easy to navigate in. We received a mini flashlight with 2 mugs for our taking. It's pretty nice to have too. There's free coffee and ice if you need some. We got a cabin that has a kitchen and bathroom. There are some that you can rent just the bed, then you'd have to use the public restrooms or bring your own grill. I've seen other campers with vans and RVs, but you can call them if you need more info about their rules for camper vans. Inside our cabin, the kitchen is fully equipped with plates, utensils, knives, can opener, pots, and pans. There's a microwave and toaster too. By the sink, there was a sponge (not new, unfortunately) with dishwasher soap. There's cold and hot water on both the sink and shower. Trash bins allocated for regular trash and recycles were a nice touch. The refrigerator was a decent size. If you plan yo stay for a couple of days to a week or maybe more, I'd recommend bringing in food to cook. There aren't many places within the area to buy so make sure you bring food and drinks. Our stay was wonderful. You don't hear the vehicles passing by the highway. It's just the sound of the river, the wind and birds, especially on quiet time. Overall, we would go back to this campground. Totally recommend for families or couples for a getaway. read more

I've been coming here for 30 years; it used to be my Happy Place. It's been getting worse over the years, but now it is just another corporate shill. We had mid-week off-peak reservations 3 months out. I broke my pelvis, called to cancel & they charged me a $50 penalty for being totally bedridden! Instead of making this MINIMAL accommodation, they read me their "usual policy." It's my "usual policy" not to break my pelvis; that's why I asked for a reasonable medical accommodation. Any person w/a brain could waive this penalty, but not this "hippie" hangout. They spew a bunch of bs about peace & love, but are just money-grubbing hypocrites. Its obv not about the $50, which will not break my bank OR THEIRS, but about being inhumane, greedy pigs. If you're going corporate, at least have flushing toilets. read more

We've been coming here since 2021. Now we got a chance to come as a family of 3. My baby girl enjoyed it so much. She even enjoyed the river. Everything is always perfect. Very neat place. Staff is friendly. Showers are more than you expect for a campsite. Restrooms are cleaned periodically. It's a good thing to have no signal to disconnect from the world and connect with the family but if you really need outside connection there's pay phones like back in the day or just pay for WiFi. My experience is always great. I recommend this place always. I hope to keep coming yearly with my family and make it a tradition. read more

Do yourself a favor and AVOID this camp ground like the plague. The couple positives about this facility are heavily outweighed by the negatives. With the exception of a couple people the staff and management were apathetic and exceptionally rude. The grounds are beautiful and the free coffee is pretty good but on everything else they nickel and dime. $20 a day WiFi internet which is spotty and only available in a small designated area. GRAPHIC: There was fecal matter and pubic hair on almost every toilet in the men's communal bathroom. Quiet time was not enforced and people were playing basketball with headlamps until the early hours of the morning. I have to believe that the majority of the positive reviews for this business are bots and/or management. I was told that this place used to be great but then was purchased by a wealthy conglomerate or corp and has become a hell hole. You can throw a dart at 5 superior grounds and cabins in the area. I have never written a review with this level of complaints and negativity and like to give small businesses the benefit of the doubt...but from the sound of it this is no longer a small business but rather a large corporation or a very wealthy family who's only motive seems to be profit at all costs. read more

If you are seeking a place to stay in Big Sur, this place is incredible and an absolute MUST stay. My girlfriend and I lodged/visited numerous places throughout our trip in CA, but this was by far our favorite stay of all. Considering we spent most of our time enjoying the outdoors, the cabin we stayed in topped off the Big Sur experience! The cabin/campground was well-maintained, spacious, spotless, and truly a hidden gem. There are many reviews on here that notate the lack of amenities, but most don't understand how desolate the Big Sur area is. I can personally say I expected much less for a campground. But the amount of sites, and different stay options can appeal to anyone. The staff on-site made us feel at home and were super welcoming. I want to give a shout out to Max (I believe he is a site manager) - he was very knowledgeable of the area and recommended numerous sight seeing/hiking/dinning options. We are so glad to have crossed paths with him! We loved Big Sur, but it would not have been the same if we didn't stay here. 100% made the trip truly memorable. read more

Have stayed here several times over last few years and previously recommended them. The change is mainly due to their harsh no refund policy during storms. I get that they have a firm policy because people can change their mind willy nilly and thats hard for a business. However yesterday was an exception due to storms in the area. We were coming from the South and HWY 1 was closed. We called and they would not provide refunds. Ok, so we made a second attempt to come and drove the long way around from N which was technically open. Once past Carmel, however, the wind was so strong that several trees toppled across the road, a large boulder rolled onto hwy 1 partially blocking us and my trailer started to sway significantly making the journey unsafe. We pulled to the side of the road and considered option. With safety in mind, we called to cancel. Once we found safe accommodation we found out that the entire area was under a flood warning due to rising water in the Big Sur river. Yes, the one that goes through camp. And guess what, they still wont accommodate refunds. So sorry, I will refuse to do business with them anymore. There have to be exceptions given the circumstances. read more

This is a a good place for cabining and RV'ing but not for camping. There's an unpaved driveway that circles the campground. Anytime there's someone driving it kicks up a lot of dust. I really feel bad for the folks that camp nearby. The playgrounds, washer and dryer, and general store come in handy. They should pave the driveway to keep the dust down. read more

The campsites were TINY. You're far too close to your neighbors for my liking, and we had good neighbors. There is technically no parking, so you have to fit your tent, your stuff, and your car all in the 20 ft x 20 ft space. The creek is pretty but the site is right next to the highway. So aside from kids screaming and playing in the water there was highway noise and a woodchipper running just down the street. Even though we paid $150 per night for two nights, we only stayed one and got out of there. I don't recommend, and I'll never go back. read more

It's a bit on the pricey side but I wanted to check it out because you know how the grass seems greener on the other campground.... We stayed in a studio cabin. It was nice to have our own bathroom with a shower and electric. We also had a queen sized bed and more than enough towels for our weekend stay. If you book cabin #68, things to know: - Very close proximity to the basketball court so the sound of basketballs resonated during our stay. - The wood was not dried out and the family next door burned a lot of it that the smoke had no where to go but in our room (my lungs were burning and I slept with a mask). - You get your own fire pit and given a bundle of wood. - Also we got a goody bag with two mugs and a flashlight. The mugs came in handy since there's free coffee and tea and the office. - There is no internet which is good for me but to keep in mind. They offer inner tubes if you want to float on the river, as well as a swimming hole (at your own risk). On Saturday night they had taco night which we regret not doing since we went out to dinner to get away from the sound of basketballs. If you are a family with small kids or a group, this is an awesome place to go. If you want quiet time or do not have small kids, you might want to consider other options. read more

The facility is fairly clean, and they offer free amenities, but my complaint is that for the price they charge, they don't provide full hook-ups. The campground is small, with tight turns for mid to large RVs, and they've placed the dump station at the entrance, blocking traffic for those trying to enter. If you decide to use it, the staff asks you to hurry up and finish quickly, while other people yell at you for using the dump. Whose big idea was it to put the dump station at the entrance? Also they don't enforce loud music and drunk people. read more

PRICING - I have been to this place several times and our last trip was crazy busy expensive. Not only was it over $100.00 each night but the place was empty. Then on top of that a guy pulled in to the spot next to us and after we started talking we found out he was basically a walk in and yep, he paid $30 less then us for the night. We made reservations 5 weeks ahead of time and paid more then this guy. CAMPING - The camping is great, the Big Sur area is beautiful but it's very messy. The employees don't sweet or rake anything up. The roads are wet, muddy and covered in leaves. Now to be fair it is the forest but even where they have assault it's nit clean. Our RV space was so dirty that I used my hose to clean the concrete slab. RESTROOMS & SHOWERS - The restrooms and showers are good but they are not great. Everything was clean, the water was warm and there was water pressure so that's I guess good enough. THINGS TO DO - There is really nothing to do. There is a small park and a basketball court but the kids were board out of their minds. The river is really nice but there isn't really a beach. The water was cold but we rented a raft and floated downstream anyways. One of the small cabins caught on fire because the ass clown that was renting the place out ash and hit coals in a paper bag and then set it outside in the wood steps. Don't worry I put the fire out and saved the place from burning down. All I got was a thank you from the staff. The best thing to do here in Bug Sur is to just soak in the forest and enjoy this beautiful part of California. OTHER CAMPERS - The place was empty but I've been here before. Most everyone is chill and the place is quiet. CUSTOMER SERVICE - The customer service is very good. One particular lady lives at the RV park with her daughter. She was super mice and really helpful. She actually went on vacation the day we arrived. It was her birthday so we brought her a cake. Like I said she was really nice and very helpful. OVERALL "4 STARS" At the end of the day this place is great but it's getting really expensive. The new owners claim that they are fixing it up slowly over time. I think everyone should visit Bug Sur and I think that this is a great RV Park but I think it's important to shop around because it just wasn't worth what we paid. read more

Really nice campsite. VEry clean bathrooms and campsites are excellent. The staff at front desk very helpful as they gave me some matches for our campfire. The young man man also helped me change my rv site cause I didn't have an extension for my hookups in campsite 41. He let me move to another rv site that worked much better. There are plenty of dog clean up bags around and they give you a gift bag of cards and flashlight as well as firewood. We enjoyed our stay here even if a little pricey compared to other campsites. Noticed that there were not too many insects and no racoons at all. Also no bears. Very friendly campers , families and kids. The best thing I experienced here was everyone was enjoying nature sights and sounds rather than being on their phones. There is no signal here nor any wifi so people are forced to be human beings again and talk to each other and enjoy life - So refreshing. There are no street lights so it gets very dark at night and you feel at peace here read more

A very nice site if you're "glamping". I came up with some friends for the Big Sur Marathon weekend. We had 2 RV site, & one of the sites near the river creek. They have power & water hook ups for your rv, the campsite has the cleanest bathroom areas I've ever seen at a campsite & you don't have to pay for the showers, washer & dryers are also onsite. There's a playground & basketball court as well. The area is in the forest around a lot of redwood trees so the temperature is fairly cool since a lot of the area is shaded. The campsite is in the side of highway 1 that's near the coast so you'll have to leave the campsite to do any hiking or trail exploring, but overall I had a great time here. During our visit the staff was friendly & helpful, hopefully that's the sign of improvement from what a lot of other reviewers have experienced in the past. read more

The scenery is spectacular, all the sites are fairly close together. The cabin bathroom window faces a campsite and no curtain is provided, makes for a steamy bathroom while showering. Sadly, this place is changing quickly in the price & experience categories since new management took over a year ago. At almost $200/night for dirt camping and without separate tent & RV spots you too might be hearing a generator during your quiet weekend. If you're in a cabin as some in our group were then watch out for campfire smoke getting into your cabin at $400/night. At previously moderate rates the dusty road, cool weather, old but clean bathrooms, & no wi-fi/cell service was okay & part of the Big Sur experience, but at top dollar resort prices this place is antiquated, near the road, & testy about how many vehicles, guests, & freebies you get. My husband was told he needn't hoard coffee since there would be more, but the guy wanted another cup. Multiple generations & friends have met here for over 20 years giving the place a friendly vibe, but that is changing with new management to a corporate one. read more

Stayed last weekend and was very impressed by the beauty, professional staff and cleanliness of the campground. Had tent site #17 right on the river and it was awesome. Would also recommend site #19 which is next door (also on the river). Staff was very friendly. Bathrooms and showers were immaculate and cleaned at least twice daily. Never saw a single piece of trash on the ground anywhere. Yes, it's off season but the campground was still nearly full if not at capacity. Also a bonus is free coffee daily and a short walking path across the bridge where you have access to a market and the Big Sur River Inn where you can grab a beer and sit in a chair in the river.
