I work on the same campus as Big Tree Little Preschool and regularly recommend them to my friends, family, and colleagues without any reservations. As a former nanny, I tend to think of pre-school as a place to "house" kids while their adults are working. Big tree little preschool is definitely an exception to this belief. Big Tree Little Preschool teachers are incredibly engaging and you can tell that they love what they are doing. They clearly enjoy engaging with the kids and helping them discover, play, and learn. I am so glad we discovered Big Tree Little Preschool for our daughter!!! Not only do they have the most educated and friendly preschool teachers and staff, but the entire facility is perfect for young children. It is a winning combination of the basic learning models for a great educational start and the ideal atmosphere for children to begin to socialize together and develop their communication skills and friendships. From the very beginning our daughter felt comfortable and was always excited to get her day started with fun, learning, and activities with children of her age. We attribute her later success and top of her class awards in Elementary School, to her core learning and development initiated at Big Tree Little Preschool. I would like to address the response from big tree to my wife's review below, and the many inaccuracies of Rebecca's response. I also provide screenshots to provide proof of our side of the story. Additionally these are our feelings and facts, and if the situation as a whole would have had more appropriate communication and been handled better, there wouldn't be such issues. This is an honest review of the school and our situation. I would encourage anyone with questions about their environment to reach out to me here for more information. First of all, we were not talking about any emergency exit doors that are required to be unlocked. According to Director Liz, there were other doors that our son was supposedly able to open - but then again, how exactly should we know because Liz would not have a meeting with us as clearly requested in our email. The seemingly "issue" came out of the blue with no opportunity to discuss and figure out a course of action to mitigate supposed issues. One of the doors talked about by Liz was an interior door (see email screenshot). Interior doors going inward are not require to be left unsecured and could at least have a child safety handle cover on. I feel this is something every parent should be concerned about. We assume proper securement is not given, because how else can a 2.5 year old open doors? I won't even go into the discussion about the flimsy, unsecured fence separating the age groups. With regards to the nature walks, (permission slip example provided), it states "ONSITE FIELD TRIPS". To me - and any regular person knows - that does not mean outside of their secured and fenced in area. Per this slip, permission was not given to take our child outside of their fence line placing all the children in danger of not only getting separated from the group, but providing someone an opportunity to abduct a child. Even as Rebecca said in her response, the permission is for just on their campus, and nothing about going outside of the fence line. Furthermore, if you take children this young off the premises and clearly expect them to stick with the group and not roam around, we seriously question your understanding of a typical 2-year old's behavior. Moreover, if you apparently have more teachers than necessary, it's another reason to wonder why a child exploring is causing such an issue with your school. Those are all our concerns and obviously neither the director Liz nor her staff properly conveyed to us any issues, because they never offered to have any kind of meeting to explain anything or figure out a way forward. If that had been the case, maybe we wouldn't have these concerns. Also, if the Director did a better job of communication, we wouldn't be in such an unfortunate situation. You mention that everyone can contact Big Tree with questions - if only someone would actually be available to talk or reply to emails. We recommended Big Tree to a couple of friends looking for a preschool; they then tried to contact the school a few times but never heard back from them. So they moved on. You can also read other reviews here of their poor communication. Lastly, as we have spoken to multiple parents since we were basically pushed to take our son out, we found out that there have been numerous similar situations that are unexplained with a number of children. Interestingly enough, all of these parents point to the fact that, since Liz took over as the Director, the school has had these kinds of issues with kids. Maybe the facility needs to take a closer look at the current Director and the fact that many children have been kicked out of their school or taken out since Elizabeth took over. Our son attended Big Tree for 6 months; please explain how after 6 months all of a sudden such issues arose without previous communication or a proper meeting. We toured over 6 preschools while we were on the Big Tree waitlist last year - and we were just holding out to get into Big Tree. We were thrilled to get in at just the right time for our son. Having our child be outside most of the day was very important to us for his growth, development, health. Their approach to a nature-based play preschool is refreshing. Kids should be outside more! The property is beautiful, and the weekly curriculum is great. The staff and directors are wonderful- they are accommodating, kind, willing to work with your child on developmental progress. Our twins went to Big Tree for the 2021-2022 academic year, and we had a great experience overall! They were nearly 4.5 years old when they started, so they started in the general preschool program. It was outside and play-based. Both kids really enjoyed the preschool. They quickly formed connections with the teachers and other kids. The teachers were very kind and friendly, and our kids made good friends there. For the activities, in particular, our kids enjoyed the arts & crafts and nature hikes. Our twins attended half days, Monday through Fridays. We were very happy about the connections and fun they had, especially since they had been out of preschool for over 1.5 years because of COVID and our move. After winter break, they were able to join the TK/K class with Ms. Carol, and it was a wonderful experience. They learned so much from her, and each day, they came home with amazing activities and work. One of my favorite pieces was the ABC notebook they made, which they brought home at the end of the year! I loved hearing about their days and was impressed by their learning. We were also so appreciative of Ms. Carol's class in particular since it offered a bit more structure and practice for when they went off to kindergarten, which they started this year. The school was very good at communicating with parents. If we ever had a question or concern, either the director (when our kids were in the preschool program) or Ms. Carol would respond promptly. I appreciated the daily photos and updates from the direct and teachers in the private parents' group online. I also really appreciated the events they had for the kids and families, like the fundraising bike-a-thon in the fall (my kids really loved it!) and the Art Fair in the spring. Then there was a sweet TK promotion ceremony in June, and it was very special. Finally, in terms of health and safety, I appreciate the precautions the school took during COVID and with general cold/bugs. I think the fact that the school is outside helps with that. I remember when our kids were first in preschool (a couple years prior in San Diego when we lived there) that they were sick nearly every month, so I appreciate the health aspect. Overall, I highly recommend Big Tree, especially the TK/K class. We enjoyed our year there. We miss it, and we are grateful for the good experience and memories! read more

We love this school and the teachers! My son attended Big Tree Little Preschool's TK program and I couldn't be more impressed. Miss Carol, the TK/K teacher, is knowledgeable, experienced and caring. She lovingly prepared my son for Kindergarten beyond what I thought was possible. She knew exactly what he needed to know and how to help him get to that point. The instruction was student centered and included real life application as they spent a lot of their time exploring the world around them in their amazing outdoor space. Everyday I was excited to hear him tell me new things he learned. We both work full time and it was nice having our son attend TK at BTLP because even when it wasn't TK hours, he was cared for by the other amazing educators at this school. They spend a lot of time outside which was great for my son. I always felt comfortable bringing my son to this school because I knew he was in the hands of individuals that cared for him and looked out for his best interests. I will begin by saying that we thought this was the ideal childcare facility to start our just-turned-two year old son -- six months ago. Kids play outside the whole time as long as it's not pouring. Play-based; no strict curriculum. However, we had to learn that this is not the right place for very active/energetic two and three year olds that are eager to explore, because this preschool does not put the proper safety measures into place. Doors are not secured and any child can apparently just go through if not watched. A real concern! We were told in an email, out of the blue, that our son was opening doors and gates (beware, it's just a flimsy plastic fence not childproofed that's separating pre-K/K and the younger children) and that this would pull away a teacher from the rest of the group. He would also not stick with the group and roam around when they are being taken off the premises (they call it a nature walk). While this is a nice idea, we paid the preschool to provide a safe environment for our little one. We never necessarily authorized them to take our son off the fenced-in property -- but since they were going on their walks, we expected it to be their responsibility to keep him safe. And they need to understand that a two and a half year old can be a runner and not yet be able to walk with a group. Obviously, too much for them to handle. But why even take the children off the premises? Of course two and a half year olds are more energetic and likely to explore. There is nothing wrong with that; they just need to be in a safe environment. It is not our fault that the school is not equipped to handle such a situation and apparently only has two and three year olds that walk in a straight line. This was in addition to him apparently trying to open doors. They labeled it as "attempts to escape". Any parent of an energetic and curious two year old would call this "curiosity". We never had a face-to-face meeting to discuss, a "warning", nothing. We were told that they "recommend that [they] want him exit the program". This statement in itself does absolutely not make any sense. Do they officially kick him out? Or is this just a recommendation? Clearly though, this shows the director Elizabeth (goes by Liz) had to write it this way because technically she had no valid reason to kick our son out. For what: exploring? We even have child-locks on our doors at home. But because of their inability to appropriately secure doors / gates that our son curiously opened he is being portrayed as a child that's misbehaving. We understand that learning to not go certain places is important but that does not change the fact that, one way or another, all possible outlets in a childcare facility need to be appropriately secured. Because if that was the case, then his trying to open doors would not be an issue at all. Let him try to go through a door/gate; he'd soon learn that he won't get anywhere and lose interest. So, us having to take him out because of this seemingly "issue" is beyond our understanding and absolutely frustrating. But it only goes to show that this place is not necessarily caring about their kids, nor willing to put in the slightest bit of work. (We also learned that very day that apparently just recently our neighbors' kid's good friend who attended this preschool was kicked out because "he wasn't a good fit".) Our response to that email and request to be shown the areas of concern and to have a meeting to discuss and work together to find common ground, a solution, were completely ignored. It was handled so very unprofessionally. We never once got an update on our son's "situation" so we could have prepared etc.; it was apparently over the course of only four school days that we eventually got to this point and received that particular email. Everything happened absolutely unexpectedly. Funnily enough, we were even getting ready to send our son four half days the following week, as encouraged by the director Elizabeth herself because according to her and the teachers EVEN ON THE DAY THAT WE RECEIVED SAID EMAIL, our son was doing "so well". Two hours later, the whole tone changed. Absolutely mind-boggling, frustrating and confusing. Our son liked going very much and we had a good routine; now we have to find a new space for him short notice. We are beyond confused about all this. But maybe it's for the better because this school seems to be absolutely unprofessional and the safety concerns are real. (The front gate at drop off also hardly closes and they never seemed to have done anything about it.) read more

We have an independent, well rounded, kind and curious kid thanks to the care our daughter received at Big Tree and would definitely recommend this school to parents that are looking for a smaller setting where kids are not just another headcount. Our daughter just graduated from Big Tree and while we were very sad to have to say good bye, we could not be happier with how well Big Tree prepared her for starting Kindergarten. Miss Carol is a wonderful and experienced teacher who has been with the school for 10 years and our daughter was excited every morning to go to her TK class. She made great friends there and all the other teachers were very kind and respectful with the kids as well (most of them also very long time teachers there). I really appreciate the play based and child-led learning approach and that most of the time was spend outdoors (the playground is large and has a big tree to spend shade), exploring critters, learning about sustainability (no screen time necessary) and building important social skills. The school is also diligent in putting the health and safety of the kids first and they are making sure there are plenty of activities to chose from, be it for imaginative play, art, fostering curiosity and basic scientific thinking or supporting conflict resolution. In my experience the school has been very accommodating and the only disadvantage I can think of were the occasional bug bite from being outdoors and loads of laundry but the messier the kid, the more fun they probably had :)). If you are looking for a very structured traditional care where kids are getting entertained instead of motivated to think for themselves and take initiative and explore, this is probably not the school for you. I don't think that this justifies a one star review though. read more

I discovered BTLP a couple of years ago while doing an exhaustive search for preschools around the Oceanside/Vista/Carlsbad area. My husband and I are teachers, and a social worker friend told me about how happy she was there, so I went for a tour. At the time, I was in the process of calling and and touring many preschools. Big Tree quickly became my #1 choice, for many reasons, and I am very glad I chose them. First of all, the overall vibe is very welcoming and down-to-earth. You will see kids spending a lot of time playing outside, running around, climbing, riding bikes/cars, etc. There is plenty of shade (due to the big tree!) in the large, private playground. The kids go on frequent "nature hikes" around the perimeter of the playground as well, which is safely fenced. There is a new garden, and two outdoor classrooms have been added as well, making the space even more dynamic. The interior is kept clean (it seems like someone is always cleaning!) and the set-up includes a variety of activity centers. It is a pretty small school, but that is exactly what I was looking for. The teacher-student ratio is better then average as well, especially in the 2 to 3-year-old classroom. Every day I see that the kids are all clearly having so much FUN. They are free to be kids, but in a safe and supported way. Clear behavioral expectations are reinforced in a gentle manner by all teachers. The director, Ms. Rebecca, not only has kids of her own but has spent years in education as well, and is a credentialed teacher. She plans out a very well thought out environment and curriculum for the whole school, with the help of her teachers, and the result is a really cohesive and delightful world where young children have fun and learn a lot, while not being pushed too hard, too early academically (as in many strict, academic-preschool settings I toured). She is also an excellent communicator, and is always available to answer questions. The curriculum is developmentally-appropriate and engaging, as the kids are still doing a lot of hands-on, play-based learning, including authentic arts and crafts (you can tell the kids themselves are making the art--it's not the teachers making it look all picture-perfect). There are sensory tables and a wide range of toys and curricular materials to stimulate all types of sensorimotor development and imaginative play. Materials used are often very natural, such as homemade play dough. They have circle-time, show-and-tell, read stories, sing and dance, and have dramatic play. There is a letter of the week, and they learn pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills at a natural and appropriate pace. Plus so much more. My kids are always coming home with fun stories and evidence of learning is very apparent. Most of all, they love their school, their friends, and their teachers. I can't really say enough good things about Big Tree, but I will close with my most important thought: the teachers. Ms. Rebecca, and all of her staff, are some of the warmest, kindest, and patient women I have met. You can tell they really are invested in making sure each child's individual needs are met, and that every parent's concerns and needs are heard and met as well. They are always very communicative and transparent, and are willing to do whatever they can to keep their students and families happy. It's a sweet gem of a place for children to spend their days growing. In fact, most days it is quite hard to convince my kids to come home, they are having such a blast! read more

Long story short not the preschool for us. They only had negative things to say about my child. We eventually opted to take them out and put them in a more structured school with full time teachers who have been at the same school for over 10 years. No more negative remarks about my child from this new school and he is thriving. We've encountered other big tree little preschool parents with similar experience to us. My daughter had to stop attending this preschool do to the virus. I have called them 7 or 8 times without reaching anyone. I finally got a call back from someone and told her my issue. She said she would text me Rebecca's number. Still nothing. Now after 2 months of no communication I called again today and left 2 voicemails to finally have Rebecca call me back. My issue is still not resolved. They say when they closed because of the virus they kept 2 weeks for vacation pay. But yet they also charged me in the beginning of the year when I was also on vacation. My wife told a teacher my daughter would not be there for up to 10 days several weeks prior, but because of lack of communication I was also charged. Also they like to celebrate the kids birthdays which is a great thing, only when my 5 year old started noticing this she had asked the teacher why they didn't celebrate hers? If there were 6 stars I would choose all six. My family and I can't say enough good things about BTLS. Our son Jacob was struggling at his prior preschool but is now thriving at Big Tree. Sure there are tough days, but that's because he's 4 years old! Rebecca and her staff provide a clean, safe and loving environment, and the outdoor setting is beautiful (the church grounds include a large open space the kids take "field trips" into). The curriculum is play based with lots of arts & crafts, and the kids have plenty of free time in between activities. My daughter was having allot of issues with separation anxiety but after her very first day her confidence was through the roof! We have such big love for Big Tree. My little one LOVES it here, and she is learning so much with the caring, experienced teachers and the wonderful, diverse group of kids. Ok so I am not a YELP-ER but I felt compelled to write a Yelp on Big Tree Little Pre-school. This school and it's staff has treated my son and I like we are part of their family. The teachers here all have tons experience and are nothing but kind and loving to the students. I love that this is a play based learning structure where children learn from their environment, peers and of course their teachers. In my experience this is how children learn the best at this age! The director Mrs. Rebecca has just been a doll. She is flexible and fair and really cares about the children along with Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Chris! My daughter attended Big Tree Little Preschool for a short 3 weeks before I decided to disenroll her and place her back into a more expensive, better quality preschool. My daughter attended this school in December of 2011, so perhaps Rebecca has made the necessary changes to make this school a quality preschool. The tour was fabulous. Like a dream come true. The facilities are clean, the playground is different (but in a good way). The school has an emphasis on nature, which is unique. Rebecca, the director/co-owner/teacher, used to teach special education for the school district. This gives her some benefit in the classroom as she is utilizing this curriculum in the two year old classroom, which is very appropriate for this age. It is not too easy nor is it too challenging. The cons: the two year old classroom has no bathroom. All teachers are part time, therefore I never knew who was going to be there in the afternoon for pick-up. The routine was never the same. Some days the kids were up by 2 from nap and other times they were sleeping until 4. My daughter's lunch bag would come home empty but she would be crying the entire way home from hunger pains and telling me that some boy ate her food. My daughter would be very grumpy at pick up, not like her. Her things would be scattered all over the school (shoes, cups, lunch bag, sweater). I would have to go on a scavenger hunt for these items. The final straw for us is the day I picked her up and she told me she ate a crayon at school and colored on her belly. I did not believe her. Much to my surprise, my daughter's belly was all green. A couple of hours later, she pooped a crayon. My daughter has never eaten crayons before nor had she ever used markers to color on herself. This means that my daughter was left unattended/unsupervised long enough to do both of these things. During her last week i popped in unannounced at various times. We have 3 boys. 2 of them have attended 3 other preschools and we have been most pleased with Big Tree Little Preschool. Rebecca and the staff are passionate about what they do and it shows!! We are so happy we chose to go with BTLP for our daughter's first school experience and look forward to sending her little brother in a few years. The director and teachers are professional but also warm and friendly. I feel like they tailor the curriculum and each activity to my child's interest and ability. They know I'm more interested in play and experiential learning, so they don't push her in the academics I know would turn her off. But I love knowing she's exposed to academics also. She'll participate more fully when she wants to. The playground is amazing. And they go for nature walks. The nature walks are often the highlight of my daughter's day. And they dance! She came home and taught me how to freeze dance. I highly recommend every parent check out the school. I brought my daughter for the tour and visited one more time with her, and we both felt it was the right place for us and the right people. Miss Rebecca is great about communication. We love BTLP! Our daughter started 6 months ago. They go on hikes and get lots of outdoor play time balanced with fun learning programs. This summer they learned about the world through a fun pretend-travel program, and my daughter would come home excited to tell me about the country they'd covered that day. She learns about recycling and being a good steward of the earth and the importance of kindness through their Kindness Keepers program. I'm also noticing she's learning to write and sound out words, and add and subtract. My daughter is there in the morning and afternoon and loves it -- if I arrive to pick her up early, she's usually upset because she wants to keep playing. I love Big Tree! My older son, now in Kindergarten, went here and loved it! He did TK his last year and was super prepared for the academic world of Kindergarten. Big Tree also did a great job of still integrating play into learning with the academics. My now 3 1/2 year old also loves it! They go on nature hikes, do yoga, and they just completed a series on cooking, and the kids got to bring in aprons from home and cook every day for a week, and at the end they brought home Jr Chef certificates. I can not say enough great things about Big tree!! My son is 2 and 1/2. He started with this school when he turned two. He loved it from day one. All the teachers are loving and respectful. Whenever I have a question or concern, no matter how small, I get a response right away from the director Rebecca. There is a huge outside area for the kids to play. When I pick my son up he is always busy playing outside and never wants to leave! What sold me on the school was their discipline policy. We follow attachment/gentle parenting and this School was right in line with what we do at home. So I knew my son would feel comfortable and confident here. Within the first month he was singing all kinds of songs, coming home with paint on his hands (in a good way), and expressing interest in the other kids. I love this place and never want to leave! My daughter has been going here for 3+ years and is now attending Kindergarten with Miss Carol. I could not be happier with the quality of all around care she receives. I chose to keep her at Big Tree for Kindergarten because my daughter was in Miss Carol 's transitional Kindergarten last year and I could not have been more impressed. I recently pulled my daughter from her preschool because of high turn over rate in teachers and I went and looked at 4 other preschools before deciding on BTLP. My husband and talk all the time about how happy we are with the decision we made. I wish I had her in this school from the very beginning. Our dtr loves her preschool, brings home tons of crafts, talks about her friends, and is learning. The teachers really care and I feel like my daughter is taken really good care of. The owner has a back ground in Special Education and you can see how she brings a multi-sensorial approach to learning everyday. Yoga, treasure hunts, nature walks, singing, dancing, crafts, and multi-sensorial approach to pre-writing skills are all part of her day. I will say the facilities are older, the rooms are small and its not "new" looking, so you have to look past all of that. But none of that matters to me though because I know my daughter is happy and learning. read more

My Daughter is 4 and she has been going to Big Tree Little Preschool for two years now. The school has been great for her coming out of her shell and thriving socially. They are very caring towards all the children there and very green awareness which I love. read more
