We walked all the way to the top, went around a few times, and we never got to see the lighthouse until we were able to see that it's only open once a month. Even though I didn't see the actual lighthouse (it only opens the first Saturday of every month),…read morethe loop trail around Trinidad Head is amazing and still worth doing. It is just under 2 miles to hike the entire loop and is a pretty easy trail to walk on. This hike provides some of the best viewpoints of the Pacific Coast. The trailhead starts off in the parking lot. The Trinidad Head Memorial Lighthouse (replica of the original) was recently moved near the parking lot and you are able to walk up and see it. It was a beautiful morning when I hiked this trail. I loved the picturesque view of the harbor with all of its sea stacks. During certain seasons, you can spot migrating grey whales. Trinidad Head Trail Loop has a few benches along the way if you want to sit and relax and enjoy the view. There is also a stone cross on the trail that commemorates the Spanish explorers that landed here in 1775. In addition to the views, I enjoyed going through the little greenery tunnels and seeing all the pretty flowers on this hike. The lighthouse was commissioned in 1871 and is still currently active.

Monument for those buried at sea [Trinidad CA]…read more I wasn't sure if this Yelp page was for the concrete memorial lighthouse (or is it a replica) or of the one off of Edwards Street. Either way both are remembering those who perished at sea. The memorial on Edward's Street is a pyramid shaped marble slab engraved with sea gulls and the words "Lost At Sea," with names listed on the plaques. As more names were added through the years additional plaques were placed along the adjacent cement retaining wall. There were so many names it was sad to see and reminded me of the movie "the Perfect Storm" [2000] with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. The movie was based on a true story where the boat of the crew of six was caught in a storm and disappeared with no survivors. In 2012, we saw the memorial in Gloucester, Massachusetts inscribed with the names of those men. So sad. The memorials in Trinidad are free to visit. It looks like the lighthouse has moved a couple of times but it was at the harbor area where we saw the lighthouse and fog bell which served as a permanent location for the monument. Both memorial locations were adorned with wreaths during the Memorial Day weekend. The Axel Lindgren Memorial Trail on Edwards Street was currently not available due to erosion. Review #3777

Additional plaques were placed along the adjacent wall as names soon outgrew the smaller monument. There used to be a replica of the 1871 Trinidad Head Lighthouse here. It housed the original Fresnel lens and the bronze fog bell from 1898. But it was moved to Trinidad Rancheria Harbor a few years ago due to erosion. I was moved by the memorial when I passed it on a walk one early morning. Each year on the last Sunday in May, this community gathers to remember the names of the people recorded on the plaques.

There is a bike path that goes along the parking lot and grass to sit on while you take in the beautifully rebuilt harbor. There was a Tsunami wave that hit Crescent City in 2011 that did damage to the harbor. They have really put the money they got to good use. It's neat to walk around and check out the big fishing boats and even the crab pots while there are signs that tell you about the harbor. We come here because it's safe and clean, my wife used the public restroom while we were there and she said they were very clean, like I said there were people on bike , kids playing catch with a football , the cars were driving slow. We enjoyed our stop into the harbor and we look forward to coming back soon, highly recommend

I still remember watching the news back a few years ago of the tsunami from the gigantic earthquake in Japan hitting the harbor, destroying in the piers and damaging the boats. I took a hard left after seeing the sign to this secluded beach along Oregon's beautiful coast…read moreline, my QX80 handled the steep grades of loose gravel just fine after finding the far left side of the road offered a much smoother ride as I whipped it around the switch backs to the tiny parking lot, almost proud of my off-road excursion only to find a few nimble cars and motorcycles had taken the same route without issue - I guess the sign suggesting four wheeled drive vehicles beyond a certain point is somewhat overstated - but I did enjoy the ride down even though my embellishment was only in my head. Once you park it's a fairly short hike down a well marked path, you may be tempted to take in all the scenery from the small park at the top but believe me the awesomeness will meet you at the waters edge. There's a small creek dividing the open area at the bottom of the trail it's a cake walk to cross it and if you've come this far you have to find a way to cross it, its about thirty feet wide but on this day it was merely a few inches deep, of course if there's a flash flood warning when you visit then your story may differ from mine. The sand is mostly silty in and around the creek but loosens up as your approach the water. As you stand amongst the giant rocks the waves atomizes the cool ocean water as it crashes into the rocks gently misting you with its salty spray, today the weather was quite warm so it was a welcoming anointment. The drift wood and rugged terrain is prehistoric and it's easy to imagine the Jurassic world when you stand so close to creation. The relentlessness of the ocean is almost deafening as the waves march ashore but yet it's a tranquil paradise filled with life forms that dance in the foam and tidal pools. If you can't find your sanity here all may be lost...

In fact, you may not even realize you're on a bridge until you see the 'Oregon's tallest bridge" sign. This bridge lacks the fancy top, and it's a little devoid in interesting architecture. It gets five stars, though, for being the tallest in Oregon.

It's easy to access - and if you're there in the spring season, there's a fantastic wildflower field right across from the bridge entrance! Not to mention that it's a hotspot area for birds that migrate seasonally from the Arctic! I had no idea - was a very welcome surprise! The bridge is actually part of the California Coastal Trail - it's at the start of the Hammond Coastal Trail portion. And it's got an interesting history too! This area is know as the "Arcata Bottom" and apparently the area was widely used for dairy farming back in the late 1800s and is largely unchanged since those days! It's very bucolic! People have been crossing the Mad River at this location since 1905. There are several fun info signs around the bridge entrance and even trail maps. There's even a small parking area to the right of the bridge entrance. It's unpaved but in good condition at the time of our visit.

The Buhne Building in Historic Eureka Old Town Downtown was built for Captain Hans Henry Buhne in…read more1884. Captain Buhne was a very wealthy man credited to be the first captain to pilot settlers across the Humboldt Bay. He was also was a business merchant/dairyman/tugboat captain/ railroad & timber investor and Vice President of local bank. Captain Buhne hired the architect firm of "Kenitzer & Raun" to design his building. The architectural design style was called "Italianate Renaissance Revival" which was a popular style at this time "Victorian Era". During the late 1800's the building was home to a number of business, some being (Humboldt County Bank/US. Land Offices.) Today the first floor is occupied with boutiques and restaurant. The second and third floor remain offices and apartments. The craftsmanship of the interior as well as the exterior are stunning ! I love all the detailed workmanship of this period !
