    Information about the memorial lighthouse
    Shayla B.

The Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse is a replica of the original functioning lighthouse that's located on Trinidad Head. The memorial lighthouse was once housed above Indian Beach but has since been relocated between Seascape Restaurant and Trinidad State Beach. If you're taking a trip to the North Coast and you find yourself in the small town of Trinidad, you should make it a point to visit this lighthouse. This lighthouse is located just steps from the beach and lists the names of those who were lost at sea. There's also a very informative placard that tells the history of the original lighthouse just a few miles away. There's a beautiful hiking trail located right next to it that will lead you to the original lighthouse. If you have the time, I would highly recommend doing this short but brisk hike. The views are absolutely stunning and you'll be able to see the resemblance between both the original and memorial lighthouses.

After breakfast - I visited the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse. It's very easy to access as it is right off the road. There is a memorial associated with the Lighthouse. And a trail leading down to the water. The day I visited - there was a warning sign stating that the stairs down were not safe - so I opted to pass on going down to the water. #TrinidadMemorialLighthouse

This is a non-functional lighthouse right across from the Trinidad Bay Bed and Breakfast. In the early 1970s, the Trinidad Civic Club decided to establish a memorial at the lighthouse for those lost at sea. The memorial started as a marble slab engraved with sea gulls and the words "Lost At Sea," but has steadily grown through the years. In 1975, the club created a four-sided, pyramidal, rock-cement monument, located near the fog bell, that supports plaques inscribed with names of those lost at sea. Inscriptions were later added for those who were buried at sea, and the list of names soon outgrew the plaques on the small monument, so additional plaques were placed along the adjacent cement retaining wall. Each year on Memorial Day, friends and families gather to remember those whose names are recorded on the plaques. Originally, the fog bell was only rung at the Memorial Day gatherings, but through the generosity of Dave Zebo, a long-time resident and a former Mayor of Trinidad, the bell has been automated to toll each day at noon in memory of those buried and lost at sea. Click here to hear the bell toll a couple of times (the flag at the memorial was at half-staff due to the then recent passing of President Ford). In August of 1998, new windows and a new stainless steel dome were installed atop the tower thanks to the efforts of community volunteers and Tom Odom, former mayor of Trinidad.

Pretty, free, and easy to get to, there's not much not to like about the Trinidad lighthouse. It's the perfect spot to take some photos and stretch your legs if you're on a road trip. A couple of small signs give a brief history lesson, and on-street parking is free and easy. A nice and worthy minor detour if you like lighthouses.

I love memorials. I enjoy stopping for moments of silence to think about the lives of others that have been lost. The Soldier's Memorial of Pleasant Hill honors WWI veterans. Walnut Creek has Veteran's Memorial Plaza. And Lafayette has a hill of crosses honoring men and women killed in Iraq. This Lighthouse Memorial in Trinidad celebrates the lives of those lost at sea. The memorial sits atop a hillside overlooking a great span of the beautiful Northern CA coast and ocean. There is a bench and a small area to walk around. Lots of beautiful flowers were in bloom but it was hard to take our eyes off the view! A list of names on the wall includes the people lost at sea both recently and many, many years ago. I read over the names and thought about the people; wondering about the moments before they went missing. Was it a giant storm rocking their boats until they capsized? Or an accidentally falling overboard and vanishing. Or maybe someone swimming away in hopes of being "lost", like Julia Roberts in Sleeping With The Enemy (though, she was eventually found). Great movie. Great memorial.

Sooo pretty! The pictures do not do it justice. It was very easy to get to from the 101. Great on a sunny day. Cute little town around it! The steps down to the beach are quite treacherous & long. Worth it if you have the time though!

A nice, little lighthouse memorial park. Not much to say other than been there, done that.

Awesome lookout point of the harbor and trinidad bay. From that point, one can see seabirds, seals and even whales at times. There's a cool memorial and several placards plus a huge bell sharing the past history and celebrating the many seaman that served in the area. This is also one of the trailheads to Indian Beach.

Thanks to the Trinidad community for this Memorial to lost at Sea.

This is a great memorial dedicated to those brave Souls who have given up their lives to the Sea. God bless them, and You!

The signs don't really tell you where to go, and the whole thing is a very confusing affair. We walked all the way to the top, went around a few times, and we never got to see the lighthouse until we were able to see that it's only open once a month. We feel let down if you want to get some exercise, go ahead, but don't expect to see the lighthouse.

It is just under 2 miles to hike the entire loop and is a pretty easy trail to walk on. This hike provides some of the best viewpoints of the Pacific Coast. The trailhead starts off in the parking lot. The Trinidad Head Memorial Lighthouse (replica of the original) was recently moved near the parking lot and you are able to walk up and see it. It was a beautiful morning when I hiked this trail. I loved the picturesque view of the harbor with all of its sea stacks. During certain seasons, you can spot migrating grey whales. Trinidad Head Trail Loop has a few benches along the way if you want to sit and relax and enjoy the view. There is also a stone cross on the trail that commemorates the Spanish explorers that landed here in 1775. In addition to the views, I enjoyed going through the little greenery tunnels and seeing all the pretty flowers on this hike. The lighthouse was commissioned in 1871 and is still currently active.

This is a beautiful modern pier nestled in the relatively calm waters of Trinidad. The "new pier"…read morereplaced the "old pier" several years ago, but the primary purpose remains the same: supporting commercial fishing and crabbing operations seasonally. The last hundred feet or so of the pier is designated only for commercial fishing operators, but the rest of this private pier is open to the public. The environment surrounding this pier is breathtaking, with huge headlands towering above either side of the pier, and a gorgeous view of the rocky coastline down towards Humboldt Bay. I visited this pier twice during Thanksgiving week, fishing and crabbing in the evening with my boys. We caught a few small rockfish and white croaker, and several small crabs that were well below the size limit. Can't wait to come back here.

It's California's northernmost oceanfront pier (if that kind of trivia excites you) - and indeed it's eighty miles south of the Oregon border. Just for your reference, the crabbing baskets were decoratively stacked at the end of the pier (photo: http://bit.ly/355OWY8), and the surrounding scenery was near-storybook. I didn't try the Seascape Restaurant at the front of the pier, but the next time I need chowder, I'll be so there. Pretty spot it is indeed. RELATED - Lost on the Lost Coast? I had plans to spend the holidays with the family in the Bay Area so I had to "stock up" with Humboldt products, particularly Dick Taylor chocolates and Moonstone Crossing wine. I was blessed to have Hayley on duty when I visited. As usual, she listened to what my planned event was and suggested some excellent choices. I was surprised to see that she had her "own" blend...HAYLEY'S COMET. I cracked up when I saw that she had modified the logo to feature her dog! I wound up purchasing several of her own blend as well as an assortment of other reds. As usual, the family loved the wine, especially Hayley's product.
