If you want to buy expired, overpriced food look no further! My family and I have been giving this store business since they opened, and if I think back on all the expired food that we've purchased from them over 3 generations, it would be in the hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Lately we have been having a really bad streak of buying moldy, expired and opened products. Less than a month ago we saw a RAT scurry from under one shelving rack to another, further putting us off from this local business. We have gotten bean sprouts that were moldy in the container when they were still well within their date, expired dog and cat food, expired tea, expired eggs. I am extremely disappointed with how this business is going and considering all of the new business with everybody that moved up, they should be moving so much product that stuff isn't able to go bad on their shelves. Making a trip to Walmart for food you know will be good is worth it, and Walmart is more cost effective even with the 30 mile drive one way. read more

You wouldn't guess that in the middle of almost no where you'd find such a well-stocked grocery store. Beautiful produce - as well as delicious. Lots of selection as well as variety and reasonable prices. The peaches this summer were fabulous. I wanted to make caprese salad, and they had fresh mozzerella. If you want to save, buy their store brand items. And I really couldn't complain about their alcohol selection. It was wide and varied. They had small brewery beers, wine and spirits. Nice! The ice was cheap! $1.75 per 7lb bag. When we got to Yosemite, we paid $4.75 for the same ice. The check out people are very nice, too! read more

The deli disappointed my group of 9. Sun on the way to Bear Valley, we stopped to buy sandwiches for my family (4) and our guests (5). The bread was obviously not fresh - who knows how old, but we all had sandwiches on stale bread. How difficult is it for a grocery store to use fresh bread? Embarrassing for us, not to mention the wasted $. Next time we'll buy lunch @ the resort or Head Waters Coffee shop in BV. After drinks, chips, and sandwhiches - that'll be about $100 we'll spend elsewhere. read more

Quick, super friendly service but minus one star for a huge lack of selection and overpricing. For example, a box of Barilla for more than 2 bucks? Even at chains like Safeway and Luckys don't go above $1.50. It seems like they exploit the fact that there's not really another convenient place to get groceries in the area. read more

Wonderful meat counter, no prepackaged plastic wrapped packages here. Amazing selection of baked goods, even cinnamon bread from Greenlees in San Jose (the best) and it was fresh! My daughter cannot eat sugar and they had a better selection of sugar-free items than Safeway at home. They carry standard brands and better brands you would buy at whole foods or a foodie store. Huge alcohol selection. Draw-back: Some of the prices were very high, gallon of ice cream over $6? Overall a great little friendly grocery store. read more

GREAT GROCERY STORE! We drive to "MOUNTAIN RETREAT CONDOS" every Fall, from SoCal. Although we are visiting here ONLY for two weeks (sigh!), we ALWAYS buy more than we need on several shopping trips (and share w/others before we leave!), because it is SO pleasant to find such good quality items, at such a resort location - AND THEIR PRICES are comparable to our local SoCal Target (except for frozen pizzas!). Not only do we find our "hard-to-find" "Low Acid Tropicana OJ" (THANK YOU!!!), they have a great selection of cheeses, LOCAL Produce and a good variety of yogurts and interesting/tasty soups! (THANK YOU!) Since they are also, a local community store, they run a LOT of weekly specials and they carry locally-baked goods (and FRESH cider!) from nearby farms. Shopping here on our vacation makes me feel VERY relaxed! As to crowds, we haven't found that is a problem. They simply open up more registers and quickly - and CORDIALLY get you through the check-out/packing process. Nice people! Always enjoy shopping there! read more

As someone who has been coming up here since 1985, I remember the tiny little market Dennis had! I was thrilled when I learned of the "bigger and better" one on it's way! I, too, have found old wines that I was sooo pleased to find, and Dennis was so great to let me know he had a couple of cases that I split with friends. Now as a "local" for the past 2-1/2 years, I appreciate their "senior" discount Tuesdays! The checkers are always nice and friendly. The meat department and deli are wonderful. They carry most everything you could need..... if not I can always go to our equally nice and friendly Ace Hardware. I am pleased to see so many nice remarks from visitors! This store is awesome. We always shop there when we are in Arnold. Great selection at the deli and the produce is excellent. We have often bought our meat there also and have never been disappointed. We also feel the prices are good and in fact cheaper than what we spend in the Bay Area. You can not go wrong shopping here. read more

Big Trees has DVD rentals now. All kinds of new Movies and at a good price. There is a big red kiosk at the front of the store by the Bakery section near the front door, it has a TV on top playing trailers...pretty cool! read more

and so, I was NOT a big fan when IGA took over... the prices were increased beyond belief. I as a local stopped shopping there except for must haves. They took away their great broccoli salad and replaced it with a pre-made which was noticeably at EVERY small supermarket. THE GOOD NEWS is that they have lowered their prices and best of all they have went back to MAKING their own broccoli salad again. VERIFY THE PRICES!!! First off, let me state that II was extremely pleased with the selection in this store. I had read other reviews and knew that the prices would be higher than what I was accustomed to, so I was prepared for that. As I shopped, I tried to be extremely aware of the prices of items I purchased and deliberately chose some of the less expensive items -- cheap paper towels instead of the nice ones we buy at home, lower priced balsamic vinegar because I only needed it for salad dressing one night. So, I was surprised at the sum when the cashier told it to me. As I was shopping with a group of people and we were tired from a long drive, I didn't inquire about it. Now that we are home from our trip, I am looking at my receipt and see that I was charged for Bounty paper towels ($4.69 for 4 rolls) instead of the store brand I chose which was $2.59, and $12.99 for Balsamic vinegar instead of the $4.99 that was written on the shelf. It is true, I should have checked while I was in the store, so ultimately it is my fault, but if you are concerned about being charged what is advertised, check your receipt before you leave. read more

Very disappointed in this neighborhood monopolized market. Over the years the quality has dwindled and they tun out of things all too often such as basics like chicken and fresh hamburger. I went today and bought cheese, ceaser refrigerated dressing, hummus and frozen blackberry cobbler. It was so obvious the store had lost power and the food was left to melt and sit at lower than healthy temperatures. The cobbler had juice all over the inside of the package. The cheese slices were stuck to each other. The dressing was clumpy and the consistency was wrong. It was spoiled. Whats it going to take? A sickness or a death? Get it together and take some pride in protecting customers instead of worrying about throwing spoiled food out. read more

This is 1 incedent out of many decent ones, but this was ridiculous! 8:47pm: I raced to arrive at the store and begin shopping (that's why I was so aware of the time) 9:00 pm: my cart was sitting by the check out area and I was grabbing ice cream about 20 feet away. I noticed 4 staff members staring at me... A young boy, a teenager, and a woman about 30, as well as the white haired woman behind the check out. The little boy about 12 years old (who was working there, apron and all), was told to yell in my direction from about 15 feet away. I didn't think he was even talking to me but apparently he was hollering at me that the store was closed. I told him that I was aware of the hours and that I was grabbing one last item. When I got to the checkout, it was now 9:00 on the dot and I said to the super rude white-haired ring leader behind the checkout, "if you're going to have all these impressionable young employees looking to you as an example of customer service, possibly you should treat your customers a little more professionally and not send a child to do your dirty work." She said "well we close at 9 PM". I repeated that I was aware of the hours and correct me if I'm wrong but usually that means that no new customer can come in the store after 9 PM. It doesn't usually mean that you harass your customers at 9:00 who have already been shopping for 13 minutes and are obviously wrapping it up. When I got to the door and the 30Ish woman unlocked the door for me, she had to get one more comment in by saying to me "We have families to go home to too ya know!" At this point I couldn't believe it and I told her maybe you shouldn't have a night job. 9:04pm: I started my engine and left vowing to never come back... but living up here you don't really have a lot of choices. I have gone back, but I haven't seen her there lately. Maybe I got lucky or maybe she's gone because I'm sure this is not the only time she left a customer pissed. read more

When they were with IGA they would put out a weekly sale ad online. It's been around 3 months since the store changed hands and still no weekly ad online. If Sierra Hills Market can post a weekly ad why can't Big Trees Market do the same. read more

This place is a great stop on the way to bear valley. They carry a lot of the nit knacks you can sometimes forget at home or need to get an extra pair gloves or water shoes. They are actually really cheap far as food goes. This is one my stops on the way up the mountain when you need something. read more

I love this place. You'd think given it's really the only game in town they'd get a little cocky, but the service is always fantastic with friendly people eager to help. The meat counter is better than any I have at home in the Bay Area (definitely try their sausages), and the produce selection is vast. I've come to consider this my "must stop" destination on the way up to our cabin in Bear Valley for all of my grocery shopping. Only one minor complaint... Please don't ask me if I qualify for the senior discount! It's like asking a woman if she's pregnant. Not worth the risk. read more

Great market, being the only one in the immediate area. It is a bit more expensive than your typical neighborhood store, but I think it should be expected due to the circumstances. They do have deals/specials. I have always found the staff to be really nice and helpful. While not a full time Arnold resident we own a cabin up here and have shopped at Big Trees Market through many ownerships with good results. Every department is stellar in their selections. (Especially the liquor department) I have always been happy with their product for a small town grocer, until today. Yesterday we spent $180 at Big Trees Market buying food for a guest filled weekend. I bought two packages of Bacon, Farmer Johns. I made BLT's for lunch from the fattiest bacon I have seen in a long time. After lunch I went to exchange the second package of Bacon for a more expensive brand. Cameron, the front end manager, wouldn't take it back. Their policy is to not accept returns of refrigerated items. No exceptions. The bacon was still cold to the touch. Bottom line is they lost a good consistent customer to Sierra Market in Murphy's today because they were unwilling to absorb a $7.00 loss for good will and customer service.
