My husband was even quicker. After visiting Calaveras Big Trees State Park on a colder Monday in October, we made a stop at their deli because we remembered eating a sandwich there 10 years ago or so. Our memory served us well as the Giant Sequoia sandwich was fabulous: Dutch Crunch bread, bacon, avacado, turkey, lettuce, tomato, and more. The service was quick and the sandwich was great. At 7:01, an announcement came on saying the store had been closed for one minute and to head to the register. Totally fair. I needed one more thing from produce so I hurried- another announcement at 7:02 said to "stop shopping- we are closed" I grabbed my last item and went up front. By 7:03, I was already being checked out. And yet the reaction from staff was... unbelievable. There were several employees standing at the front just staring at me--clearly irritated, like I'd personally ruined their evening. It was three minutes past closing. Not 30. Not 15. Three. Then it somehow got worse. They were out of bags (understandable), so I asked if I could use the hand basket to carry my items to my car, which was literally parked right in front of the doors to the store. I was told no, "these baskets cant leave the store"--and that I needed to go outside and get a cart instead. So I had to run out, grab a cart, and come back in... while the entire staff stood there watching me. There must have been 6 or 7 employees glaring at me with dirty looks like I had insulted them personally. The older checker was grumpy and rude, but honestly the whole team contributed to making the experience feel hostile and unwelcoming. I completely understand wanting to close on time. But if ringing someone up at 7:03 feels like a crisis to your staff, that's a management issue--not a customer problem. Also- why not sell reusable bags if you run out of bags so often? I would have bought one to make it faster for me to exit the store. Seems like a simple solution to avoid the extreme stress your staff is experiencing

I've even dedicated whole birthdays - to visiting grocery stores. Perusing well stocked aisles - especially when the words 'organic' and 'natural' grace them - is where I often get my dopamine highs :) Recently Safeway has been serving up some solid grocery store finds. Their berry selection has been 'berry' good. In fact their blueberries are some of the best around. I will often stock up on multiple cartons and will even freeze some of them for cold fruity weekday snacks. In addition to carrying solid berries - their produce selection in general is varied and reliable. I still adore Grocery Outlet and many of the other quality grocery stores in and around the area - but when I have a basic shopping list - I know that Safeway knows what's up. Though the current handleless paper bags are definitely not serving. Anyone. Trust.

Their self-checkout has issues more often than not. And the people who are supposed to be monitoring the self-checkout are either not present or can't figure out how to make a checkout work. I rarely shop at this store anymore. The last time I shopped there the self-checkout froze on me and they attendant told me they would be back in a few minutes. That was several months ago. I have not shopped from that event until today. I encountered the same exact problem. If so check out froze up. I turned around and look at the attendant. She gave me a thumbs up. I attempted to keep scanning items and it was still for us up. I turned around to get the attendance attention. She was gone. My suggestion if you live in the area. Shop one of the local markets that care about their customers and know how to operate a grocery store. I would like to note that I do not immediately jump to Yelp due to negative experiences. I have written the save Mart customer service twice about the issues at this location and not received any response.

It is not a huge store but had pretty much everything I wanted. I picked up some fruit and fresh veggies and then headed to the bread where i picked a really nice baguette up by La Brea Bakery. I headed to the dairy section and found one of my favorite brands of butter (Clover) and then to the deli section. They had a great selection of cold cuts available like Mortadella, Prosciutto and Soppressata. They also make sandwiches and have a good selection of meats at the butcher section. The cheese selection was excellent as well. I came in a second time that week and they remembered us.
