This is the best market in Calaveras County! They have the freshest and best produce department along with a large selection of vegetarian and vegan options. I don't eat meat, but everyone I know loves their meat counter as well. When checking out tonight with my purchases, An older man named Dave was our clerk/checker and he was so friendly and such a pleasant person to interact with! Another thing I love is they ask you if you want paper or plastic, and I usually get paper as it seems less eco-terroristy and these paper bags are so nice, with great handles... they could almost be repurposed into gift bags! One star for the deli counter! I ordered a salami sandwich with light mustard no mayo, what do I get? A salami sandwich with no mustard and tons of mayo! So gross. It made the sandwich inedible. To the ladies working the deli counter this day: I know your job sucks and you make minimum wage, but the very least you can do is get a customers order right. Especially when it is on paper in front of you! I also tried a bite of my boyfriends sandwich and the bread was so dry!! He ended up throwing most of the bread away and just eating the meat and toppings. In general this is a pretty nice grocery store. It's too bad the deli has ruined my impression. OMG, the chicken breasts. They were SO good! When my spouse said something about how great it tasted, the guy at the deli counter said that people bring coolers with ice to load up on their meat. When one thinks of a small town grocery store, they probably think of limited food options, dirty floors, and slow moving checkout lines. Big Trees Market is anything but your typical small town grocery store. Not once have I gone to this store and not found what I was looking for. The store is orderly and clean. It is well staffed with smiling faces and quick hands. They provide their own special brand on several different products that is not only cheaper than the big name brands, but of a much higher quality. I think it is so funny that only vacationers and visitors have reviewed Big Trees Market! It's time to add some local perspective! I lived in Arnold from the time I was 3 until I moved after college. I didn't move because I wanted to, but because alas the job market for college graduates is not the best. I miss it terribly and go home to visit whenever I get the chance. I remember when "the new market" was being built. It used to be called Applewood Market and it was located across from the Meadowmont Golf Course. The market is huge by Arnold standards. The previous reviews are correct in that they do have a good selection of produce and specialty food items. I like the wine department too because of the large selection of local wines. Some of which are really good thank you very much. ;) We would always shop during the week because on the weekends the place was packed with tourists stocking up on their food for their weekend/vacation getaway. As far as some of the comments about the locals' negative opinions on "flatlanders" go, it's like this: Arnold and most of the communities in Calaveras County depend on tourists to sustain themselves. It's kind of a love/hate relationship. You know that you need the tourists who come visit and spend their money. But, you don't appreciate the fact that some of them (not all of them) can cop a "I'm better than you attitude because I have a vacation home" and look down on the locals. That is not cool no matter where you go. Rudeness is unnecessary from anyone, locals or visitors. I guess it is that way in almost any tourist destination. I'm sure the people who live in San Francisco don't like it when all of the tourists just stand around and gawk at everything in the city. Sorry I digressed from my review, but I had to get that off my chest. So if you are in the Arnold area for vacation or a weekend getaway, stop by Big Trees Market for your food supplies. Been going to Big Trees for years but never used the bakery. WOW I was impressed. I ordered a quarter sheet chocolate cake with fudge filling and chocolate frosting. The cake was great. VERY moist. The decoration was excellent and it was very affordable. read more

This is a great market. They have an extensive variety, good prices, and we found everything we needed and more. When I saw they had in-house made roast beef at the deli I had to get it. I just made myself a sandwich and it was delicious, and far superior than the "name" brand meats you see at most deli counters. The cost for the in-house roast beef was less than the Columbus brand roast beef. The employees were very friendly and helpful and offered very useful advice since we were new to the area. Can't wait to shop here again. Also, I love their local store paper. It's charming and a good way to pass time with puzzles and positive information for free. read more

One person had no mask on at all; just a tiny upside down little plastic thing pulled so low it would serve only as a drool catcher. Really enjoy the market and appreciate they and the staff are working during the pandemic. Mask use by customers is inconsistent, and - more concerning - some employees take their masks off to speak, and some staff wear a bogus plexiglass mouth shield (not a mask, not remotely sealed. I get that some customers are irresponsible about masks, but it's just unacceptable for an essential business to treat the pandemic like a joke. This is the only grocery store shopping option that I know of when staying in Arnold. I was able to find some of the basics that I needed easily. The deli/meat area looked picked over. The major bummer was that mask wearing and social distancing wasn't being enforced. Most patrons did have on masks, but some had them below their noses. Being the only grocery store in the area (or until your in Murphy's but this is closest to our cabin) it has a lot of stuff some thing reasonably priced. We hate bringing milk up since the altitude pressurizes the jug, we just buy milk up here instead. This past weekend we got treats for our kids in the store and my husband found grape red vines. Which we have never seen in our area. So this store has a few items that we don't even see in our local grocery store. There is always lines so be prepared to spend a little more time in the store, it is the only store in the area so everyone shops here. read more

Went to this store twice this weekend. It is a nice store in an area that has really no other options. When we stopped by on Saturday 9/3/16 it was packed as every isle was jammed and the checkout lines were long. The checkers handled it as best they could and were very friendly during a stressful time. Went back on 9/4/16 and the store was much calmer and gave me a chance to cruise the rows a little easier. Have been going to this grocery store for years. Like every summer we stop in for sandwiches on our way to the lake. There were 2 different ladies behind the counter on Saturday 06/22/2019. The one lady made my 2 sandwiches which were 2 meats with everything for both. They had little lettuce and tomato. Nothing else was on them and I had requested almost every single condiment available. Yes it is only a sandwich, but spending my money and not getting what I paid for is very disappointing and frustrating. This place basically has everything you need. You won't find a lot of Asian stuff here, obviously. So if you're cooking and need some specific spice, you are probably out of luck. It's like safeway but without the multi cultural items. They have some Mexican stuff. This place is definitely more expensive, because you are high up and without a lot of options. Definitely worth buying it at your local super market to save money. But if you're in a pinch, they definitely do have it. Would never think I would have to write about my time shopping at Big Trees Market, seeing that i have been shopping here since it opened and have never had a sour trip till yesterday. The computer came up with an error while ringing up my items, which were ALL wic items. After Kelly the cashier fumbled for a bit to fix it, she called over Kim who oversees prices (I was told). Kim ran to the back a few times to check to see if all items where wic approved and they all were. Both Kim and Kelly looked at me with blank stares and no solution and said that there was no way to fix the error in the computer, and that it was wic's fault this error was coming up. I would have to pay the balance that the computer displayed on the screen to be able to take home my free wic items. Mnd you, when you wic shop, you pay no out of pocket price, its all funded by wic. Confused, I asked, "you cant void this transaction?? clearly there is an error and if we start over maybe it will fix itself" Kelly said there was no way to void a transaction and I would have to pay $18.79 to go home with my FREE wic items! Linda, a manager walked over, because by this point, in a very quiet not crowded market, you could see something was going on near us... Linda looked at the register and at my items, hoping she would find the problem and fix it, but she doesn't, and then tells me to use my EBT card to pay off the balance so I can get my FREE wic items... an EBT card I do not own! (that was probably that worst part of the experience, to suggest I pay out of my pocket for an error on their side is absurd, not to mention the assumption I had EBT) Sherre ( Im not sure if im spelling her name correctly) then walked over, took two looks at my receipt and found the error like it was nothing. Brought over a binder with laminated papers that looked like cashier procedures and voided my transaction and re-rang me up with ZERO errors, all while Kelly mumbled under her breath, "this is scary, im nervous, I don't think this will work" but BAM! it worked, Sherre rocks, she nailed it, she should be running the place! She was the only one to even apologize or give me any kind of sincere human interaction. I suggest you take your WIC checks to Savemart and avoid Kellys line at Big Trees Market. NOTE: this is my first negative Yelp review, because that's not really how I roll, but the way these ladies made me feel walking out of there is something I just cant let go and couldn't let other people experience. read more

Big Trees is a good overall grocery store, but I really just came in to use the bathroom. We were heading up the road to the Calaveras Big Trees park when the previous night's bad decisions struck me. It was Memorial Day Weekend and the town was overrun with thrift shoppers because of the Peddler's Fair, so finding a public bathroom became an urgent challenge. I cut into the back of Big Trees and was relieved that theirs is a one person, private bathroom tucked away behind the meats and cheeses. I was in their an inordinate amount of time which was made all the more stressful by the old man who was impatiently jiggling the handle the whole time. I ignored his icy stare and left feeling relieved and light as air. While leaving I did get to take a gander down some of the aisles. Your standard selection of grocery store goods, well-stocked shelves and friendly employees. The only negative was some high prices that I imagine have something to do with the market's somewhat remote location. read more

From the outside, it's deceiving - small town store, with pickups parked out front displaying their "Flatlanders suck" stickers. Doesn't seem too hospitable - but once you're inside, your opinion quickly changes. A butcher's counter to rival ANY in the Bay Area. A great selection of organic, fresh, local produce. Excellent wine selection. Tons of out-of-the-way things that you wouldn't blame them for not carrying - but they do, because they know their customers. And that's what really sets this place apart - the folks who work there. From the meat counter, where the butcher offers tips and suggestions, to the staff wandering the aisles who ask if they can help you with anything (when was the last time you were in a Safeway, and one of THEM actually asked YOU anything?!), to the checkout lanes which speed you through with a smile and a kind word. And in terms of prices, it can't be beat. I used to pack a cooler any time we headed up to Arnold for a break - but now I don't. Just gives me more of an excuse to swing by here! read more

The staff here are anti-mask. Have seen many of them stocking produce and coughing on the produce without masks on, cashiering without masks on, and none of the staff enforces the mask mandate. It's a shame because most of the employees here are elderly and will be the first to go when COVID eventually overruns the Arnold community. Shop in Murphy's instead. read more

Big Trees Market (long ago known as Applewood - they still accept checks made out to them as I found out delving way back into my childhood memories at the check stand instead of writing the damn check correctly) is the best supermarket within 50 miles either direction on Hwy 4- hell, dare I say 100 miles? Seriously, the staff is friendly (although some of the of the patrons may not be if they even get a hint of you being a flat lander) and attentive. The meat selection and more importantly, the butcher, is one of the best that we've encountered. The specials are always worth buying extra of at the meat counter and if you need a special cut all you have to do is ask and most likely they'll have it. The housemade sausages are worth a try as well. The produce is pretty good as well- they always have an impressive selection of organics and do a great job of playing to their customers. Even the basics (canned goods, spices, etc) are worth looking into- they are always better priced that what you would find elsewhere (especially the bay area). But most notable is the wine selection- they have wines from great local wineries and some biggies from Napa and Sonoma, and the prices are always competitive. This place is a must stop if you're any where near Arnold. read more

We LOVE Big Trees Market! Bought our cabin in Camp Connell (10 more miles up Hwy 4) in 2014, and we've been stopping here to buy groceries ever since. We used to think we'd need to haul everything up from the Bay Area, but not any more. Well ... there are always a few things you just MUST have from Trader Joe's, but other than that Big Trees Market has you covered. Great meat department, fresh baked goods, wonderful produce, and lots of little frou-frou things you thought would only be available at a specialty market in the suburbs. Oh ... and lots of local wine, in case you forgot to stop at the wineries around Murphys on your way up. They even have pet food, pet toys, and other non-food things like beach toys and sunscreen in the summer or snow toys in the winter. All at prices you would expect to pay in the Bay Area. No price-gouging whatsoever, like in most touristy areas. It has a friendly, family-owned, small-town vibe. Great people ... I love it! read more

Been shopping here for years, but rarely get sandwiches. Decided to purchase a nice large sandwich today to split between lunch and dinner. Got there before 11AM and got a pencil and sheet to fill out. I had just begun to make my first choice mark when the older female worker grabbed the paper out of my hand, and then shoved it back at me yelling "you have to fill out your name!" Duh! I wrote my name and began looking it back over to finish filling it out. She grabbed it out of my hand again and yelled that I needed to choose my side, so I lifted my choice of chips so she could see (since she had my paper in HER hand and she grabbed the chip bab out of my hand and hissed "that's a DISPLAY bag." She was so rude I could hardly talk! Got home to find she'd made a wrap... which I hate and would NEVER order! Tried 2 bites and threw it away. NEVER AGAIN!!! We can all make mistakes, but choose to be hateful. BTW, nobody was behind me waiting, so this was ridiculous. read more
