My family and I have purchased our groceries countless times over the years and I have loss count of how many times we end up going home with expired items. It is beyond frustrating at this point as we are already so busy and to have to go back and show our receipt and return the items, it really is just a huge inconvenience, there have been plenty of times we don't even end up returning the items and just ending wasting our money on expired items simply because we just don't have the time or even forget. Not to mention the items are over priced and you almost always end up spending well over $50 dollars extra than their competitors. Service is subpar as well. Please do better Big Y. Haven't tried the wings from Big Y in a very long time but I finally did the other day and I was pleasantly surprised.Didn't care to much for the Mac and cheese bites or the boneless wings however the regular wings were quite tasty.This location is always clean and the self checkout process was fast. read more

I love the selections. I love the friendly staff. I love that the store is always neat, clean, orderly and rarely crowded. Even the customers seem friendly. This would be my go to place over St n Shop closer to my New Britain home except for two things: 1. It is a challenge to determine the price of many items! 2. Prices seem generally higher. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for this pleasant shopping experience - but I want to be able to know the price without having to ask or to fetch my calculator. read more

I Shop at this location often, mostly for convenience as it is close to my home. I have recently noticed lately that this grocery store has ALOT of expired foods on their shelves. In the "organic aisle" I bought "Enjoy life Breakfast bars" (which are not cheap!) last week; and come to find out the expiration date on the package is over a year ago! How can this be?!?! This is not the first time I have seen expired goods on their shelves! Clearly they don't rotate often. Buyer beware - check dates at this store!!!! Despite the new renovations, certain departments shine brighter than others throughout the store. But I must say overall I've noticed more employees displaying a bad attitude. The customer service is declining. Im glad that the store is newly renovated however I have a feeling that not all employees are happy with the new changes. The food quality hasn't changed it remains solid. But why make the effort to remodel the store if the employee morale is falling? If the customer service doesn't improve I'll just take my business to nearby Costco (lower prices, better food court) or Highland park market (better food quality)??? read more

I ordered the "INVINCIBLE" which is an $15 grinder and the lady is acting pissed like she doesn't want to make it. If your job is making grinders then don't cop an attitude when u have to make a grinder. Plus she wouldn't give me the free pickles that every other grinder gets . read more

Me and my kids went to Big Y and we found a banana balloon on the ceiling hovering above the meat section and we got it down. It was so much fun getting it down and it added joy to my day. Then at check out we thought we can get it free or for a discount for saving it. But they said it was a display and wasn't for sale. Two weeks before this it was 7.99 but apparently we could not get it. My kids named it and everything but they still would r let us have it. When we were saving the balloon a man was watching and called over someone to help. As a community we got it down.They are not as welcoming as they say!! read more

Great prices, friendly staff and a clean store. They do a coin based rewards system, silver coin if you spend over $50 and gold coins randomly. You can usually find something worth using the coin on. Or use the, at Sunoco for money off gas. Overall, I choose this store over the local stop n shop and well over the price chopper and shop rite. It definitely has a classy feel. read more

Normally I would not rate a store and w/not start; however the people they hire leave a lot to be desired esp. in the "female dept". Most times cashiers are pleasant and friendly and then there are "those times"...when fresh or sarcastic is the tune. I try to by-pass the Younger generation because "work" seems to be a burden for them but will go to a "more older person" who understands not everyone "LOVES TO SHOP". This holds true for "BIG Y" ...I love the store and the products they sell and most of the time I'm quite happy with the service I get.....so hats off to the people who work in the "food store" at BIG Y...they take the glut of punishment w/dissatisfied customers....Word to THAT customer...why not complain to the manager who CAN change things or upgrade something.....*itching about it does NOTHING but scratch it off your chest. Every day is full of gratitude that's how I live my life. I haven't been in big Y in a while at least a year since the last time I was in there and I ordered two slices of pizza and one of the slices was about an inch wide I'm grateful that they're decent places to shop around here to get pizza I'm grateful that I gave him a second chance and I went in there tonight let me explain, I can barely walk I have severe osteoarthritis in my knees and I picked up a wreath for $12.00 &I managed to go get a rotisserie chicken I had to get the large one even though I'"" never eat that much because they didn't have any regular size ones ,and I picked up a wreath from the front that was marked $12 ,and some water and some other things ,I wasn't crazy about the sushi even though the sushi maker was very pleasant, , I was going to get sushi but I didn't have the ones that I liked so I managed to hobble in pain to the checkout and the wreath came up for a lot more than $12 so the woman said do you have a big Y card or not I said I don't have it with me and she said well you have to go over to the customer service and it'll take a second and you can get it mind you I can barely walk I can't stand there but another second and she wants me to walk over to get a big Y card I said can't you just put in a store card or some thing and she said we're not allowed What amazed me the most is the cashier didn't even try to offer help. It's was so matter of fact. Well if you don't want it fine! It was almost as rude as the pizza/deli lady , who for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would have her working for them Back to my gratitude I am extremely grateful there are a lot of other places to shop in my hometown of course I went right to the supermarket where I have been shopping since my daughter told me she had a similar experience at big Y last year actually we used to like big Y but none of my family will ever walk in there again, it seems like customer service is a thing of the past and they're only in it for the money I am grateful that they are there and they can make money to support their familiesAnd I'm grateful that I have choices in town I left my groceries there and hobbled out to my car you'll never see my face again I purchased all I needed down the road. I think this store has the worst customer service ever. Their fish Department is fantastic, but other than that, not my favorite place to shop. I had trouble loading potato chips digitally to my card, do you think they would make an exception and let me buy the chips. No way! I asked for a Manger, still, no way. I'm in there all the time buying fish, and meat primarily and this is how you treat a customer for a 99 Cent bag of chips. Not the Big Y it used to be years ago that's for sure!!!! read more

The Big Y chain has to be one of the most overpriced supermarkets in our immediate area so I visit infrequently and only purchase items that are on sale. Their seafood seldom looks fresh and much of it farm raised in Asian countries. read more

Big Y is OK in a pinch since it's very close to where I live, but I often find myself shopping at other supermarkets in neighboring towns for the better deals. Even when items are on sale, the prices are not competitive with other stores. For example, ice cream was "Buy 1 - Get 2 Free"... but a container was nearly $6.50!!! A container of the same brand at another store was $1.99 the same week. The staff isn't very knowledgeable and there have been times I've had to find a store manager to get my questions answered. Most recently, I was looking for Parmalat or some other shelf-stable milk for Hurricane Sandy. Three different employees directed me to the condensed milk. I later found they had plenty of boxed milk in a completely different aisle!!! This Big Y is also very "low tech"... While I'm not a fan on self checkout, you won't find that service here. If I want to use their coins at a gas station, I either have to pay with cash or surrender my card before pumping. They also seem to have difficulty scanning rewards cards from mobile devices at most registers. Also, getting a shopping cart is irritating. Most places have their carts inside the entrance. Big-Y lines up their carts outside the front wall of their building. Since the carriage bank is seldom full, you have to walk in several feet to get the nearest cart. read more

Was poking around looking for something interesting to nibble on and in the Bakery they had just put out fresh glazed blueberry apple fritters and I couldn't pass them up. They were incredible and I washed them down with a hot fresh cup of French Vanilla coffee which was also very good. The two Matts that were there running the joint were incredibly helpful and pleasant to talk to, the both of them actually made my day. Will definitely return when in the area. read more

Great parking! Great Location-in a plaza with a dozen other stores. They have a bakery in the back that makes the BEST pepperoni bread! WOW! Not much has changed since last review. Prices still high. Gas rewards program was ended. My biggest complaint with Big Y is their branding of local products. Their produce comes from local farms when possible. No issues there. Their packaged items like frozen food and household items are sometimes labeled as local. Now to me a local product is something that's made in the local area, not something that was made in California, shipped to a storage warehouse in Massachusetts and delivered from said warehouse to grocery store. This isn't a local item. There is a big difference between where item is produced and where item was packaged or shipped from. Put it this way. You buy something from Amazon. Product is made in China and shipped to your local post office. The mailman delivers your package from local post office. Big Y would consider this a local product because it was delivered from local post office. Check labels people. BIG difference where item made and where item was shipped from. Where something packaged at or shipped from doesn't mean it was made there. read more

Just came from Big Y in Plainville, CT and needed something late at night, the prices are always great, and the store is always clean and convenient, but tonight Bob the store manager help me search the back for a product the wife needed, and went above and beyond. Overall its a good store, with a good selection of everything you'd expect at the average Grocery Store. There food service department has very good grinders, pizza, and calzones, and there Deli has fresh soups available as well. Some employees and supervisors can be rude sometimes, but overall it's a good store, with lot's of great deals including, Buy 1 Get 2 Free, and Silver and Gold Coin deals. read more

Based on good experiences In another store near my work I decided to try ordering pizza from this location near my home. When I called in my order I made it very clear and actually had to repeat myself 3 times sausage green peppers and garlic topping. When I picked up my pizza and arrived home it had no pizza sauce on it at all so I called the store to tell them. Expecting an apology and we will make it again right now for you, instead I got a rude reply "you ordered it with garlic and people who ask for garlic want a garlic oil instead of sauce." Very rude short and I'm right your wrong attitude that I was so afraid to ask for a replacement pizza for fear it would be messed with. read more

Clean store, organized as well as any other Big Y I've seen. There was no milk left when I went to get a coffee at their bakery, and they kind of just leave the cups out and let you get it yourself and pay up front...so there was nobody around to get me any more either. I suppose you could easily walk out without paying for it, but I handed her my then empty cup anyway. Anyway, it's an average experience all around. Good sales if you hit them at the right time. They're in a plaza with a Starbucks and a pizza place, among other things, so if you're in a hurry for multiple errands to be done it's a good choice. Lots of easy parking - not like where the old Big Y used to be where CVS and Blockbuster are now at the corner of 177 and 10. That's one of the worse parking lot designs I've ever seen (aside from Starbucks next to Denny's on Route 10 in Southington! Disaster, but that's a whole 'nother review!) read more

Their bakery has turned itself around & gives the local high-end bakeries a RUN FOR THEIR MONEY. I must admit I do not grocery shop here often as the prices are high. However, since I live so close, it's sometimes convenient. May 2014, my husband surprised me with a birthday cake - german chocolate that rocked my socks off. I could not believe how fresh and high quality it was for a supermarket bakery. I brought 2 to my office in July for birthdays & again it wow'd everyone. Usually chain supermarkets have the boring std. cakes with the same 'ol frosting choices. Well, they have an amazing variety of high-end choices in various sizes so you need not buy more than you need. From the Italy cupcake which is a cannoli style cupcake with fresh real whipped cream, to all the of European styles you'd see at the local Italian bakeries. My husband just brought home long stemmed choc cov'd strawberries for Valentines Day that were so fresh & wonderful. Much better than Shari's Berries. The prices are really fair. I won't bother with Mozzicato (down the st.) or nearby Highland Park Market (which used to be the cream de la cream around here). Go look! I'm only giving 3 stars for an overall store rating, but I'd give the bakery 5. I hope they keep the bakery manager & these selections. read more
