I live in Vail Colorado. I'd taken my huskey to our local Avon Pet Center for a mild tummy ache and two days later my dog was going blind and couldn't use her back legs. My insitict told me to get a second opinion so I rushed to Conifer, 3 hrs away at 5:00 am just to find the Vet from Aspen Park Vet I'd used in the past, Dr Guerney who was one of a kind, had passed away earlier this year. They were now a very busy office with a very young staff and couldn't make time for us. In my desperation my friend called Bighorn. What a wonderful turn of events! Immediately I felt the peace come over me when his receptionist asked all the right questions and then actually listened compasionately to my responses! Amazing! She found me a spot for my Nala to be seen and within 2 hours Dr Curt was performing magic. Even tho I was being squeezed in and Nala wasn't his patient, he still took his time and was thorough, compassionate, kind, and most importantly extremely knowledgeable. I emphasize knowledgeable! His price was honest and very fair. Outstanding service! 5 stars! I will continue to drive the 3 hours if he will have us. Finding a quality vet, let's face it any servicer these days, who truly cares and isn't just trying to make money is a rare gem and worth the drive! Nala continues to fight and is holding steady! We can't expect perfection from our caregivers nor to have all the answers, perform miracles, or know what to do at all times but we can expect them to care, listen, and make wise, logical choices with the health of our loved ones. This evening about sunset we were driving by this business when my wife spotted a large herd of elk (100+) grazing along the dirt road by the barn. We drove into what appeared to be a commercial business and along the dirt road on the left. There were several cars parked on the right entry road. As we got near the barn I realized that the road didn't go on through to the properties just up the valley. We stopped and watched several marvelous males and the many females for about 10 minutes as they continued to graze and head up the valley. I turned our vehicle around and was driving back down the dirt road towards US 285 when I noticed a man standing in the middle of the road in a very threatening manner. When I stopped to greet this man and potentially apologize for driving up the road he was quite belligerent and would not listen to anything that I tried to express. He was upset because he said we chased the elk away from the barn area and that a friend he had just called to come over a "get his elk" would now be unable to do so. I tried to explain that we have pets and I'm always on the lookout for a vet service locally in cases of emergency - his response was an angry expressing for me to leave and never come back. What kind of a man who is supposed to devote his life to the care of animals sanctions the killing of elk in his barn area? These elk are quite tame and there is absolutely no sport involved when killing an animal at such range. I tried to explain that there was no indications that we would not be welcome to drive into what is a commercial property and I would not have done so if I though it was not a good thing to do. Of course he wouldn't hear anything that I was trying to tell him. As an animal lover I was truly shocked by his attitude towards me as well as him being upset that his friend might not now be able to easily kill one of the bull elks at nearly point blank range. With the disrespect he showed me and my wife (my vehicle license plates are handicapped disabled veteran) was truly beyond disappointing. I personally would never recommend a veterinarian who would allow friends to kill these elk grazing in the area of his barn. Hunting as a sport is great but the unsportsmanlike manner would have probably resulting in the death of one of the most beautiful bull elks in the Pine area. I realize that Colorado law allows home owners to kill elk that cross their property but having a veterinarian allowing his friends to kill elk that are essentially used to vehicles and people just didn't seem right. I have never been so disappointed by a veterinarian in my life! I hear people use him because he is cheap. Well I would rather pay more and use a vet that shares my moral values as well as a general courtesy towards others. read more

Yesterday, they helped put down our family cat in the most loving and humane way possible, fitting us into their morning schedule without egregious emergency prices.
