Chips were gross. Thick, overcooked in old oil. Yuck.

What an almost mediocre place this is. We went to a birthday dinner there last week. The food was average/below average in quality and taste, and the service was absolutely abysmal. The place is very loud, and conversation was difficult, especially for the three in our party with hearing deficits (two with hearing aids). Guacamole, salsa, and chips were served as appetizers. The guacamole was literally mashed up avocados. No seasoning whatsoever. Needed salt at least, which was a tough request since our party of 22 had TWO salt shakers to share. The salsa was so hot (spicy) as to be inedible for everyone at our table but one person. The chips were gross. WAY overcooked, greasy, old, just gross. Two in our party had undergone recent dental work and wanted something easier to chew than fajitas. Too bad. No other choices except a salad... with fajita meat. The fajita plates came with a combo of beef, chicken, pork, and sausage. The beef was tough and hard to chew, and the flavor was bland. The chicken was okay, although lacking seasoning and bland like everything else. The pork was mostly gristle and not good at all. The best was the sausage, and of course, that's what they served the least of. The enormous ball of onion on top of the meat wasn't an attractive presentation, nor was it easy to handle or cut up. The tiny tortillas are "cute" but a ton of work to get enough to actually eat a meal. Not one drink was refilled without having to ask the waitstaff, not even the water (tap water, no ice). Our party was not checked on at all during our meal, and we were never asked if we needed anything. Too bad the gratuity was included in the bill for a party that size as no gratuity was warranted. Lazy, inattentive staff stood at the bar talking most of the time we were there. My husband travels with a service dog. She is extraordinarily well trained and well behaved, and she was wearing her service vest with obvious declaration of her status as a service animal. We were descended upon immediately and told the dog had to go if we couldn't produce her paperwork. IN TEXAS NO PAPERWORK, NO ID, NO LICENSE, NO REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. (See https://gov.texas.gov/organization/disabilities/assistance_animals and https://www.thln.org/texas_service_dog_laws) We tried to tell the waiter (who might have been a manager) that, but he wouldn't hear it. He called the owner and came back to the table, again asking for her paperwork. We informed him of Texas law, and he claimed to be unaware. (It is incumbent on any business to know the laws of the state(s) in which they operate.) We were ready with the Texas law pulled up on our phones to show him, but when he could see he was up for a fight, he backed down. What he did is now legally called harassment. The only two legal questions are "whether the service animal is required because the person has a disability" and "what type of work or task the service animal is trained to perform." Neither of those questions was ever asked. Thankfully there were leftovers from another meal in the refrigerator, because were hungry when we got home. Won't waste money on this place ever again.

You can never go wrong with a parillada from Bigos. I wish the people in charge weren't so difficult with splitting checks though.

The fajitas were very good, moist and tender. The guacamole was fresh, overall it was very good and reasonably priced.

If Brownsville had a culinary passport, this place would be on Page 1…read more Stopped here on a road trip and honestly wasn't expecting much but BRUHH this taqueria humbled every overpriced "artisan taco" I've ever had in my life. Let's start with the soup. A $2.99 Frijoles Special bowl that tasted like somebody's abuela has been guarding this recipe since the Aztecs. Rich broth, perfect seasoning, actual depth of flavor. Meanwhile my lemonade cost 10 cents less than the soup which tells you EVERYTHING about how real this place is. The tacos? There are 7 types of tacos so we ended up ordering one of each type LOL including the intestines one. Ridiculously good and ridiculously cheap. $1.79-3.29. You know how some restaurants give you one sad tortilla and a spoonful of meat? Not here. These tacos come correct, juicy, flavorful, generous portions, fresh tortillas, and salsa that lets you know it's alive. I could feel the love going into these 7 tacos for real. Real border-town flavor. Zero tourist traps, zero nonsense. Everything tasted fresh, fast, and made with actual pride. No shortcuts, no gimmicks, no "Instagram aesthetic." Just real food for real people at prices that make you question every taco you've ever ordered north of San Antonio. Service was friendly, food came out fast, and the whole vibe feels like a community spot where locals have been eating for years. If you want authentic Mexican food without getting scammed by trendy taco bars, this is THE place. I'd drive back to Brownsville just for another bowl of that soup.

From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm that set the tone for an exceptional evening. Let's talk about the food: the grilled octopus was nothing short of perfection--expertly charred on the outside, tender on the inside, and paired beautifully with fresh, vibrant microgreens. Every bite was a masterclass in balance and flavor, showcasing the kind of culinary skill that can only come from recipes passed down through generations. The authentic Mexican flavors here are deeply rooted in tradition, yet elevated with a modern touch. It's clear the chef-owner has honed their craft under Michelin-starred mentors. That level of expertise comes through in every dish--from the nuanced seasoning to the thoughtful plating. And then there's the drink: La Paloma de Mi Corazón--hands down one of the most refreshing, clean-tasting cocktails I've ever had. Bartender Benito is a true artist behind the bar, blending flavors with precision and passion. He absolutely rocked that drink! The customer service was exceptional throughout. Attentive without being overbearing, every staff member made us feel genuinely cared for. It's rare to find a restaurant where both the front and back of house operate in perfect harmony. The most important part is that if you ask for water you will get FIGI water because Brownsville water has contaminants that are EPA approved but in the long run not safe.
