Hmm, well, in retrospect, I'm not exactly sure why I decided to pop into this boba place, seeing that 1. I'm from San Francisco (one of the boba meccas on the West Coast) and 2. I never really got into the whole boba hype when I was growing up. Still, the prospect of boba on the other side of the Atlantic piqued my interest when I was in the neighborhood... First things first: you'll definitely feel the dollar-to-pound conversion when you peruse the menu. While I am no stranger to paying extra for some of the fancier toppings (like jellies), I was a little disappointed to see that even the boba tapioca balls cost an extra £0.50. (Maybe this is normal outside of the States, where the drink is known as "milk tea" instead of "boba"? Because otherwise I find it hard to believe that boba can be sold without, well, the boba...) I went with the Assam black milk tea because I find that choosing the most basic of milk teas is the best way to evaluate a boba spot. It wasn't as sweet as the basic black milk teas that I usually can find in the U.S. (understandable, as most drinks in the U.S. are probably sugarier). The boba was fresh (to be expected, as I had pay extra for it...) At the end of the day, I had paid £4.50 for the regular size of some pretty average tasting boba. I really do appreciate Biju's mission to create and serve "cleaner" milk teas - brewing from loose leaf, avoiding artificial flavouring, and using fresh milk instead of powder - but they could step the product up a little bit. My watery assam black milk tea was devoid of any tea flavor, and I much preferred my friend's earl grey milk tea (which was basically the same thing, but with the distinctive scent of bergamot). The tapioca pearls had a good chew - personally, I would've liked to see them soaked in either a brown sugar solution or honey to give them an added dimension. We sat up on the top step for a while and I noticed that most people ordered the fruit infused milks instead of the milk teas, so maybe that's the way to go instead. One of the saving graces of this place versus others in Chinatown is that they don't have a £5 minimum for credit card transactions, but if you're with a friend, it might be better to swipe on one card at a different bubble tea place. read more

I was in London for a weekend and my cravings for boba were at an all time high so I decided to stop at Biju. It's located in Chinatown London so it wasn't hard to find at all. There are some good options on the menu so I didn't feel limited. I was in between the matcha or the Thai tea but I went with the Thai tea and unfortunately I was disappointed. It was kind of watered down and I ended up just chugging it without enjoying it. Hailing from the streets of good boba in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles and from kicking my once a week boba habit, I knew I would be craving for boba (or as it's called in London, tapioca pearls) during my visit to the other side of the pond. Even if a place like London is not known for boba or bubble tea, I'll try it nevertheless for the sake of trying it. Thanks to Yelp, I found some suggested places and picked Biju. Biju was the top rated place on Yelp and after a failed attempt at catching Mr. Mime (this was way before Sightings by Pokestop was available!), we went to Biju to take a breather. I tried the matcha milk tea and iced honey green tea with boba. Sad to say, nothing like what I can find in San Gabriel Valley. I prepped myself for it and was still let down. Place has no a/c - it was 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the door was propped open with a wooden seat stump (resulting in the loss of a spot to sit) to let the outside air in. While it is safe to say the bubble tea/boba phenomenon has pretty much become a staple worldwide, fruit infused milk is one of those drinks that remain rather elusive in non-Asian countries. At Biju, patrons can partake their milk in no less than six(!) flavors - chocolate, honeydew melon, mango, strawberry, pistachio, and taro. Torn between the honeydew melon and mango, I eventually settled on the mango after somewhat excessive deliberation. Before that first sip, my favorites were the ubiquitous banana milk in Korea and papaya milk in Taiwan. My drink was terrible. I got the Hong Kong Milk Tea which should be super sweet due to the condensed milk and added sugar (I asked for 100% sugar) and have a distinct tea taste (it wasn't distinct). I've been patiently waiting to finally try Biju and write my review and the day has arrived, the store is finally open!! Now I have another place to satisfy my bubble tea obsession and I am fairly certain Biju will become popular very soon. Nick, the owner, spent a year and a half in Taiwan learning the various techniques for making bubble tea. He knows shops there use powdered milk or nondairy creamer and make a pot of stewed tea to use for the day so the tea isn't fresh. I can confirm his statements from my personal experience traveling around Taiwan. Biju's practices of brewing tea for each individual drink and using fresh milk is in line with the way I make it for myself so I was already a fan before I even had a sip! I first came here for their soft launch and got a free bubble tea. I was very pleased and decided to come back today to try their other flavours. Especially because they make so many of my favourites that I haven't been able to find at other places. This time I ordered their their Honey green tea (my absolute favourite and a flavour I make for myself all the time) and Jasmine green milk tea. I figured I would have such ridiculously high expectations since I can make these myself and therefore have set preferences however, the teas were excellent! Surpassed my standards! Came pretty much exactly how I make it. The toppings were also nice, grass jelly was smooth and the tapioca pearls were soft although a bit more chewy than I prefer. The freshness and quality of the tea is apparent in every drink. They have really elevated bubble tea with their methods, mix of traditional and innovative flavours, and option of basil seeds for a healthy topping. I'm glad I have a place to get tea exactly to my preference when I don't have time to make it at home. I highly recommend Biju to anyone that loves bubble tea or is looking to try it for the first time. read more

I only discovered Bubble Tea a couple of years ago. It seems that in Soho at least, you cannot move without seeing a Bubble Tea outlet. The Biju Bubble Tea Room though is something special. That's because a Biju Bubble Tea is always made with fresh organic milk, and tea brewed only after a customer places an order. I didn't realise that most other Bubble Tea vendors use powdered milk and artificial ingredients. The shop itself has a clean functional look, almost clinical (which is good in my book). It has layered seating to the front of the store, with the counter taking up the rear section. The service was really good. Lucky for me it was not too busy when I visited, as each drink is made fresh for each customer, so patience is needed when being served. I went for the Strawberry Milk tea with Tapioca. It was really good. It tasted fresh and was also light. Next time I think I will go for the Honeydew Melon Milk Tea with Lychee Boba, as I've heard such good things about it. If you're in the Soho area and fancy a bubble tea, Biju is a good choice. Look out for it though, as it can easily be missed on Old Compton Street, as it is not the largest of stores. read more

I am a Hong Kong girl in this London world.. OMG I miss my quality bubble tea and Hong Kong Milk Tea. Guess what? Biju satisfies both wishes all at once! Biju is so far the best bubble tea I have tried in London. While there are a lot of other decent places that I like, Biju shines brightly amongst all competitors with their Hong Kong Milk Tea. Obviously like the normal drill, you can pick your toppings, ice, sweetness level. Their sweetness level is lower by default compare to many other joints I have tried. Bubble Tea...oh...how I crave it. It's funny, because New York has so many different bubble tea shops that you won't struggle to find a place to get one. In London, it seems to be somewhat more difficult to get my hands on it. However, this place just might knock all of those New York ones outta the park. This is remarkably good bubble tea. Probably the best I've had outside of China. They use real tea instead of that weird powdery stuff that a lot of cheaper places use, and it really shows. The tea is delicious and the bubbles that it comes with are chewy and fresh. I'm not gonna lie, you pay for the quality though, as this was probably the most I've ever spent on bubble tea in my life, with the price reaching $7. This place definitely left a great impression on me. I don't know if I'll ever be able to return to those shops in New York and be happy again. read more

Noticed the striking design and decided to go in, only later finding out this is a bubble tea shop! I drink bubble tea all the time back home in Australia and Singapore so was excited to have my first one in London. Staff were super friendly (which is unusual for a bubble tea shop) and offered to let me try some toppings. I tried the Egg Caramel Pudding, which is freshly made in store, and it was delicious and smooth. Eggy with a slight toffee taste. The Basil Seeds were tasteless, but apparently very healthy, just like Chia Seeds. Speaking to the chatty staff, I found out that the bubble tea in this shop is quite different as only fresh tea, fresh milk and natural flavouring is used. I do know that bubble tea shops tend to use milk powder, so was intrigued how a fresh milk one would taste. I ordered my all time favourite Taro Milk Tea with Tapioca Pearls. A classic and a good way to judge this new place. I was informed that their taro drink is made from actual taro and yams. At first sip, I didn't immediately like the drink, it was very different to the Taro Milk Tea I'd been drinking for years. However, after a few more sips, this version quickly grew on me. The taste was authentic taro, and I liked the little bits of taro fibre in the drink. The pearls were the right level of soft and chewy, and the drink not too sweet. After finishing off my regular sized cup, I felt like ordering another one! I'm not sure now how I can go back to drinking milk powder versions If only Biju would open one in Australia! read more

And I am a huge Chai drinker and make it at home all the time! I'm glad to say that the Chai here is superb! Very smooth with the right amount of spice, and good hints of cinnamon and clove. I love this place. That's as simple as it gets. If you're looking to have the best bubble tea in the world, you have to come here. They use fresh tea leaves to make your tea RIGHT after you order (and believe me, that makes a huge difference). I ended up going for the Matcha Milk Tea with - after sampling various toppings - basil seeds, at 50% sweetness. Being from California, I had my doubts about what bubble tea in London would be like. After all, we're supposed to have the best boba (please excuse the change in term) right? Wrong. This place is better than any place I've tried in California (or actually, ever). My milk tea was absolutely PERFECT, and the basil seeds were great too - to be honest though, I didn't quite like the pairing...but that's my own fault. Next time, I'll probably try the boba. Overall, Biju has - without a doubt - mastered the bubble-tea-making process. I can't even pinpoint what it is that makes it so good - perhaps the fresh ingredients, or the fresh organic milk? This will get you closer to tasting the real thing if you are looking for something healthy and refreshing. I enjoyed the Hong Kong style milk tea as an alternative to the Jasmine Green milk tea which carried more flavour. I also asked for extra sugar as I like my drinks sweet. This was a better drink for me although I still cannot say it was perfect. This is a great shop that knows what it's doing and has a dedicated customer base judged by the long wait and take away orders. I ordered a iced peach tea with popping pineapple. The iced peach tea was really refreshing and it was exactly what I was looking for that evening. It went well with the popping pineapple but I was not keen with the film that was left after popping the balls, instead of melting instantly with the popping balls. The off the menu lychee iced tea was a winner for me and my friends that evening. It was as refreshing as the iced peach tea but instead it was the flavour of lychee. I think the reviews about this place depend on how exposed you are to bubble tea/boba. Coming from the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles, aka the BOBA mecca... going to Biju was a desperate call for something familiar, but it didnt really hit the spot. We tried two different drinks: honey green tea and the classic boba milk tea. Both teas tasted very watered down, and the sugar levels were inconsistent (ordered the same sugar level for both drinks). Pearls were overcooked. Overall, drinks were a little disappointing. Inside, the seating is on stairs, so it can be a little tricky trying to find a comfortable spot without stepping over someone. We were there in December, and the ventilation was non existent to the point where there was condensation on the glass windows. It was very muggy inside. read more

I gotta hand it to Bijou... in an area that is dominated with tons of bubble tea shops that use artificial flavours... this places does a really good job making their drinks as natural as possible! Although I have only tried two drinks so far, I really like their ethics and ability to strive for doing things 'better' in the bubble tea world. I wasn't 100% impressed with the overall flavour... but maybe 3rd time is a charm. Another area they get really well is decor. They offer a cool hipster seating area, and friendly staff with good communication skills. I've also been able to sample some toppings, which most places won't let anyone do. And they do a really good job on marketing, social media, brand awareness and interaction with loyal customers. I would recommend any bubble tea fan to try out this shop! Terrible time there. I ordered the Genmaicha milk tea but they forgot my order. I asked and one of the workers looked for my drink in the queue- couldn't find it but told me it'll be ready in 3 min. I checked again and asked the shift lead who took my order in the beginning to just give me the quickest drink to make - I was in a hurry. He frantically looked for my order, realized he didn't write it down and started making my drink then and there. Don't come here for milk tea. He barely put in any tea and watered down the rest with milk - I couldn't taste the tea at all. They ran out of boba as well so I got the caramel pudding which was nice. I ordered a Hong Kong Milk Tea and a Matcha Milk Tea in large. Both an utter disappointment. They were tasteless and watery. The Hong Kong Milk Tea was simply milk with a hint of bitterness. The Matcha Milk Tea was essentially a tall glass of muted milk! Also, both drinks had zero sweetness to them. I came at a time when it was super busy. Despite having 3 drink makers and 1 cashier at work, it took roughly 15-20 minutes for me to receive my drink. They all seemed tense and frustrated at the time. Not sure if I should give them the benefit of the doubt that the drinks were poorly made due to the customer volume at the time, or just bad recipe. The seating here is ok.
