Ask the Community - Bike and Roll Chicago

Is it possible for us to carry our baby on the quadcycle?

No, it would be dangerous to carry a baby on the quadcycles. We do have baskets on the front for toddlers/small children. These would be appropriate for 4-5 year olds.

He was safety focused and gave us multiple opportunities to practice and get familiar with the Segway. We checked out all of the stops with plenty of time for pictures and learning about the city. We were deterred by a little bit of rain, but Vincent packed ponchos for everyone and we had a little bridge to wait underneath. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a new adventure in the city.

Listen, after being the one to pedal by bike and boat, I was going to take them up on their offer. It was $34.51 (including taxes) for an hour. Kind of steep but not so bad when you realize that there are three of us enjoying the quadcycle. While the staff were nice - and they really were - the directions on where to go weren't great. It was confusing where the path was and we ended up spending 20 minutes going away only to come back and ask for more details of where to go. They really should provide a map. Also, we had to ask them to remove the dead spiders and cobwebs we discovered while we were literally off the beaten path. Would we do it again? Yes. But pay close attention to where they say to go and, again, could've used a map. Also, be on the lookout for spiders, webs and other dirt and ask them to remove them prior to leaving the area.

That isn't always convenient, but it is a nice option to have. I really appreciate being able to watch the mechanic work since they do the work outside. If there is going to be a wait, the lakefront is a short walk and an enjoyable way to kill time. A few weeks ago I had the day off to bike around the lakefront. My bike was squeaking and rattling and needing a little care and saw there was no line there. The mechanic took a look, roughed up and adjusted my brake pads, and cleaned the wheel and inflated it. When I ask what I owed him, he didn't charge me anything. Just a straight up act of kindness on his part. I hope that good karma he put out comes back to him and this place.

Couldn't be better timing. I explain and show my bike tire. he says he has a replacement tire, I wait about 25 minutes and he starts working on my bike. 10 minutes later says the tire wont fit, he cant do it, sorry. Huh?, please put my original tire back on and ill go to Kozy on the other side of lake shore Dr. Begrudgingly agrees to put my tire back on. I try and petal, the bike doesn't work. He says there is a problem with back axle. I said please just put it back as it was when I arrived, ill go to Kozy. He said I'm not listening. "if you can just make it petal so I can get to Kozy." repeats I'm not listening. Then tells me he has to charge $10 for his time. All true. I walked to Kozy on Halsted, had my bike working in 20 minutes. WARNING: run from this place, he is a bicycle butcher. He doesn't know what he's doing. BE CAREFUL here.

I write to say Divvy compares favorably to similar services in major cities. I was in Chicago for…read moretwo days on business. I rented a bicycle three times. I used the Lyft app. In every instance, there were multiple bikes, including with e-assist, at the nearest station; the first one I pulled out worked fine; and they appeared clean and kept up very nicely. My experience extends from New York City to Washington, D.C. to San Francisco (and scooters in Los Angeles). I have reported here, as a regular user, that I'd estimate many docks are empty, at least of the models with e-assist; a third of the bikes are in disrepair; and minor issues such as sticky handlebars or trash left in the front bin are common. I continue to use this service because it is effective. I'm also mindful the price point likely allows for not that much profit, the users in the system (like me) are treating these objects without reverence (as you would your own fancy e-bike), and they sit outside exposed to the elements. Thus, if you take everything into account, what the company must be calculating is the minimum level of functionality to retain subscribers and lure casual users, consistent with a modicum of profit. That is the reality. So I continue to ride. But I felt I should post to say of the major metropolitan areas I have named, I'd rate Divvy in Chicago as the best, based on three uses.

It took me 20 minutes to locate a bike the loop and then nearly every station on the north side was full. Had to park 2 stations away from my house. How hard is it to balance the system? It's not rocket science. This is what I expect from putting a rideshare company in charge. It is such a waste. Do better Divvy.
